you know, if you can miss a day of work, miss it. who can miss a day of work. you know. >> we begin with breaking news, an early morning crash in the transbay tube has created a commuter nightmare for tens of thousands of b.a.r.t. riders. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu, mornings on 2. good morning everybody. a very busy morning on this friday may 31st. welcome to mornings on 2. i'm brian flores. >> i'm tori campbell. dave clark has the day off. we begin with the b.a.r.t. delays we've been telling you about since 4:30 this morning. a b.a.r.t. accident is now causing a nightmarish commute. right now there's only one track inside the tube that's working. this means instead of 23 trains normally running per hour through the tube, there is just
7:01 am
eight. so b.a.r.t. passengers trying to get in or out of san fransisco are dealing with long delays. we have team coverage, reporter tara moriarty is timing the commute. sal has alternate routes. we begin with claudine wong at the west open b.a.r.t. station, and you have new information about what type of vehicle was involved in the crash? >> reporter: that's right. we know this accident happened between 2 and 3:00 this morning in the transbay tube. we're now being told that one of the vehicles involved is what's called a rail grinding machine. it's a big piece of machinery that goes along the tracks and basically smooths them down. it got into an accident with another vehicle and that's what caused the mess we're dealing with this morning. we've seen people still heading up here. we've heard people say some got here earlier. some hoped it might move more
7:02 am
smoothly but there are delays. we've been on the platform and seen trains sit there for 20 minutes at a time. it's stopped at different points. tara moriarty has seen that along her travels along the b.a.r.t. route as well. the problem is is that the repairs take a while. you've got almost 400 feet of track that needs to be repaired and they've been working on it for hours. there's no getting around it. the morning commute is shot. the afternoon commute might be better. >> the afternoon commute should be normal, but the morning commute is anything but normal. we apologize. we know it's affected a lot of people, but, you know, these things happen with mechanical devices, so we're doing what we can to rectify it. >> we wanted to show you this video too because in addition to the 380 or so feet of track that needs to be fixed, they also need to fix these insulators along the third rail. they're ceramic. there are 40 of them that need to be replaced. b.a.r.t. said look, this is work we know
7:03 am
how to do. this isn't complicated work. it's just work that takes time. that's what's happening now. they are replacing those insulators, they are fixing the track. they're trying to get it done as soon as possible don't have an eta on how long it will take. only that the afternoon commute will be better. the morning commute is not saveable. they're still working on it trying to get these trains through. how they go through is dependent on the traffic pattern. some people have hit their cars, sal castaneda watching all of that for us telling us how the alternate routes are looking. >> a lot of people just turn to their cars when this happens, and they'll be crowding on the bay bridge, crowding on some of the other bridges gating into san fransisco. another way to get around the delay is to take a ferry. this is a live picture at the alameda ferry dock this morning. we haven't seen any larger than usual crowds. we've talked with one man who said he takes the ferry on
7:04 am
friday. he considers it a treat but when he heard the news he thought he might have a lot more company. we don't see huge crowds at the dock. you can take the ferry from alameda and also from oakland into san fransisco. also you can take your car. you're going to be dealing with traffic there as well. we'll have a complete traffic update. the ferry another possibility as we said. one of the things i want to mention is that if you are taking ac transit there, the bus service from downtown oakland into san fransisco and again, you can take your car, although it is going to be -- going to be somewhat crowded. so, again, it's the ferry. it could be ac transit from downtown oakland to san fransisco, or you could drive across the bridges. stay with ktvu. we will have continuing updates on all these services getting into the city. sal thank you very much. now if you're still planning to take b.a.r.t. into the city, we're also keeping track of how long it might take you. ktvu's tara moriarty, she's on her way from lafayette to san

fransisco on b.a.r.t. at last check she was at rockford station. where are you now? >> reporter: we just took off from the mcarthur station. we had been backed up at the rock bridge staying station for a while. we arrived at the lafayette station at 6:14. we took off by 6:24, and now it's past 7:00, and we have just left the mcarthur station, and what they were doing was at the rock bridge station, they actually had a train pull up on the opposite tracks but headed into san fransisco. all those people got off and got on to this train which is obviously headed into san fransisco. we have a couple of people who are a little bit frustrated. how are you holding up this morning? >> we're still alive and well, a little packed in like sardines this morning and on our way to the big city, but we're in oakland. we're here. we adjust. >> how long have you been on the b.a.r.t. train this morning, where do d
7:06 am
you leave from? >> too long. walnut creek. >> are you frustrated? >> yeah, it's very frustrating. we pay a lot more than most transit systems for this service and delays like this are common. >> are you headed into work? >> i am. >> have you called the office ahead of schedule and let them know. >> yeah, yeah sometimes you have to let people know you're not going to be on time. >> all right. looks like we lost tara's signal there. a lot of people on b.a.r.t. this morning, a little frustrated. as you might have guessed, the big problem is having a huge impact on other transit agencies. right now ac transit, scrambling to get drivers to handle the growing number of commuters hoping to take a bus across the bay bridge. we spoke to one passenger a short timing a. >> i didn't know until i walked downstairs and there's crowds of people and the message saying b.a.r.t.'s 30 minutes behind, so. >> ktvu janine de la vega is at one ac transit station in oakland where the crowds are getting bigger by the minute.
7:07 am
we'll see how ac transit is responding when janine joins us live at 7:30. we will continue to follow this breaking story throughout the morning. you can also get updated on our web site at ktvu.com and on mobile ktvu.com. it is 7:06. new this mo g,in other news, 1 1/2 million dollars in damage. that's how much it will cost to rebuild and repair three buildings that went up in flames in san fransisco overnight. the fire happened at the spencer restaurant on 14th street about 1:30 this morning. in this video you can see the flames raging inside the building as firefighters worked to put it out. the restaurant was completely destroyed. it also spread to two nearby buildings including an apartment. people living there will now have to find a temporary place to live. the cause of the fire is under investigation. novato police are warning people to be on the lookout for a man who allegedly harassed a teenage girl on her walk to school. police say the girl was walking in the area of 1st street and

the transbay tube are suffering delays, not as severe. there will be some delays because the entire system is affected by this. the major delays are for those trains getting in and out of san fransisco. if you take a train, let's say from richmond to freemont, it may not exactly be on time, but you're in much better shape than those who have to get into the city. let's move along and take a look at the bay bridge teleplay ozark 25 to 30 minute delay. it's not as bad as we could be if this was a tuesday for example i think we would be backed up all the way out to the 580 lake shore area, but this morning it's not quite that bad. and if you are driving in san fransisco northbound 101 traffic approaching the 80 split, that traffic is moving along pretty well. in the east way, southbound 880 between hayward and fremont, the traffic here looks good in both directions. 7:09. let's go to steve. thank you. clear skies, 39 miles an hour, mount diablo out of the north, but most locations aren't that bad, at least at the surface

7:37 am
>> not today. i need to be to work early for a meeting so i'm going to have to make alternative arrangements to get there. >> there are ac transit supervisors at the 20th street bus depot to answer questions and direct traffic. while they have five extra buses, they say they may have more come online. they're just going to assess the situation. again, they have three buses en route. they're going to stage them on telegraph, and then as soon as the supervisor here on 20th 20th street realizes it's getting crowded, then they're going to send them over here. again, back out here live, it's not very crowded. so this is a good alternate route to take, but again, the rush may just be beginning usually their busiest hours are 7 to 10 a.m. as long as need be,ac transit says they're going to extend their morning commute operating hours and let it go past 10 a.m. if they need the extra buses. so far it looks okay if you want to come by and use the bus

it will be about noon when they finish the repairs and get back the eastbound direction o. tube back open. it now looks like it's going to be a little earlier than that. let's bring in now jim allison, you're saying now 11:30. that's good news. the time frame keeps moving up. >> i don't want to say 11:30 actually. 11:30ish. before the noon, before e clock strokes noon we hope to have everything running through the transbay tube on both tracks. >> which will obviously allow you to bring more trains in. let's talk about the repairs underway. we have news chopper 2 above watching cruise going into the tube. what's happening in terms of repairs? >> well, the major repairs are completed. we're testing, making sure everything's done, and of course if those tests don't work out we'll have to do more repairs, but essentially the work of getting the third rail, which provides a thousand volts to the train and the insulators, the big work is done, and we're making sure
