good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." it's tuesday, june 4th. i'm tori campbell. >> good morning, everybody. i'm brian flores. dave clark is off today. let's go to sal castanedo, taking a look at the roads over there. >> all right. right now, traffic is doing pretty well around the bay area. we do have one notable backup. that would be the bay bridge. but 237 is getting a little bit slow as you cross 880. you are going to see a little bit of slow traffic there and also on the montague expressway. also this morning, the san mateo bridge is moderate. we did see traffic on the bay bridge all the way out to the maze. 7:01. back to the desk. all right. new this morning, a deadly shooting caused a crash into a power pole that crippled part of an east oakland neighborhood. ktvu's katie utehs joins us live from the scene with pictures taken right after the crash. good morning, katie. >> reporter: good morning. before i get to the pictures, i want to tell you, 20 people are

still watt power and pg&e -- still without power and pg&e estimates it will be about three hours before they get the power back. a power pole has been laying against that tree and the crews are cutting the power pole into pieces. now that it's daylight, they can untangle it. they are still working on restoring power. it should be around 3:00. let me show you the scene as the poles rested on the crashed van. bullets blasted the window out of the van the victim was driving. police say around 11:30 someone fired shots at the van being driven on maddox drive. >> there were bullet holes in the rear of the vehicle and definitely on the side. all of the windows seemed to be broken. and the air bags had come out. >> reporter: police tell our photographer that the driver died of gunshot wounds.

paramedics took a female passenger to the hospital. she had been struck in the leg. now, neighbors ran outside after hearing the commotion but the man i spoke with said that he did not want his face shown on camera because he says there's been a recent uptick in gunfire in the neighborhood. last night's homicide came way too close to home. police have not yet released the identity of those people shot or why they might be targeted. we're working to learn those details. live in east oakland, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, katie. 7:03. knew statistics shows -- new statistics show a rees in property crime in the bay area -- a rise in the -- in property crime in the bay area. in oakland, crimes are up 20% year over year. property crimes are up 26%. in san jose, they are up 29.5%. san francisco also saw a large increase in cell phone thefts.

this morning, confer groups are getting a -- conservative groups are getting a chance to testify. i want to go live to the house and ways commit tee. leaders of six conservative groups are there to tell how their applications for tax- exempt status was delayed. also today, the inspector general is scheduled to release another report saying the irs spent $50 million on conferences between 2010 and 201. another hearing on capitol hill this morning looks at the increasing number of sexual assaults in the military. coming up how senators are proposing how to fix what they call a broken system and why military leaders call it the wrong approach. happening now in santa clara county, the polls just opened for a special election to replace a disgraced supervisor convicted on familyny charges. ktvu's -- felony charges. ktvu's janine de la vega is live right now.

the big question, has anyone showed up to vote? >> reporter: we've been here for 15 minutes, we've seen two people come, drive up their cars and drop off their ballots in this voter box. a lot of people are not expected to vote. it's a special election. county leaders are hoping that's not the case because the seat open holds a lot of power. voters are being choose a replacement for george hirokawashino. he was convicted of gambling away public win. whoever wins will help those in san jose. here's what one voter had to say about whoever ill ifles the seat. >> i'm -- fills the seat. i'm hoping there is new blood coming in to dig into the correction to see if they can correct it and correct the misspending throughout the county. >> reporter: 77,000 ballots

were registered. the registrar's office says 22% have been returned. because there's so many candidates to choose from, some analysts say it may be difficult for one to get 51% of the vote. if necessary, a runoff election will be held on july 30th but if that does happen it will cost people here in the county another million dollars. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. there are a few other special elections today. in marin county, voters in the stenson school district a will decide on a $300 per year tax for education. in contra costa county, voters will decide on a utility tax in hercules. in santa cruz, a measure, whether annex farmlands will be

allowed in watsonville. two medical offices were broken into on hospital drive and then a few weeks later, two more officers -- offices were burglarized on south drive. and just two days ago, police say someone kicked in the back door of a fifth avenue but no one actually got inside. los gatos has approved a scaled-down version for netflix. the company has agreed to lease part of a proposed 550,000- square foot complex near highway 85 and winchester boulevard. the idea has been bantered around foreign the past three years. last night the developer was given approval for a slightly smaller complex across the vet from the current headquarters. opponents say the project is still too big for the neighborhood. but supporters don't want netflix to leave. 7:07. we want to check in with sal. how are things looking? >> it doesn't look bad. the most crowded conditions are at the bay bridge toll plaza. some of the other commutes look good. we might get lighter-than-usual

the team from georgia tech says apple mobile devices can be hacked using a modified usb chargers. they can use a malicious charger to hack into an ipad or iphone in less than a minute. the team will present the findings next month at the conference. silicon valley companies will be paying close attention to the cyber hacks between president obama and the president of china na later this week. the two are scheduled to meet friday and saturday at a retreat. bay area high-tech companies like facebook, apple, fogle and twitter -- google and twitter have been hit by cyber attacks from overseas. happening right now, senators and top military leaders are debating proposed changes to military law to prevent sexual assaults.

night. a ktvu viewer showed this video showing one of the fires burning on interstate 880 on glen cove parkway. firefighters responded to four areas in the same area at about 8:30 last night. the causes are unknown but firefighters say it's possible that sparks from a car are to blame. 7:23. australian researchers say they've found a fountain of youth of sorts. the scientists studied hundreds of white people to used spf sunscreen every day for more than four years. the people whoops sunscreen were less likely to show signs of aging, including wrinkles and sagging skin than people who did not use sunscreen. dermatologists remind people to apply sunscreen thickly and to reapply it after getting wet. i love the picture of the little boy scrunching up his nose. don't like it. but they need it on. >> yes. speaking of summer, we're going into the summer pattern

with the traffic, sal? >> it's pretty good. we still have very heavy traffic the toll plaza. highway 4, still some slow traffic here westbound as you come through. it will be pretty slow in antioch and also in baypoint all the way out to 680. the toll plaza has been slow since 6:00 this morning. we're going on an hour and a half of slow traffic. about 25 minutes. it could get better after 8:00 as it did yesterday. this morning's commute is going to be okay in san jose. we've had the slowest traffic on 101 but now 280 at 85 are beginning to so some signs of slowing into the valley. 724. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a rather solid fog bank out there. it's making a rather impressive push. we had gusts to 30 miles an hour at travis earlier today. that's a howling sea breeze. everything is in place. all associated with an upper low. also, it's kicking up some thunderstorm activity south of

tahoe and truckee could see something similar today. so keep that in mind. 50s on the temperatures. everybody is close here. i just think the low cloud deck and the onshore breeze, that's a west wind, a northwesterly breeze as opposed to offshore which would be east. a cooler pattern today. it was hot last weekend. this next weekend will be hot as well, maybe hotter but the cooling trend started sunday and today it bottoms out. it does look warmer tomorrow but then more so on thursday. get a good look at the fog, all the way down to southern california. 50s to low 80s. some inland areas really tough to cool down this time of year. this will be the day that everyone bottoms out on the temperatures. friday, saturday, saturday looks hot. could be 105 out towards stockton or 104 in the vacaville area. sunday looks like a big drop in the temperatures. an unwanted wakeup call for some san francisco residents.

developing news in san francisco where an suv crashed into a home. this is a live look at the scene of the accident. this happened on keith avenue in the bayview district around 5:30 this morning. you can see that the suv actually was just towed away, but it looks like some crews there are examining the scene of that crash. you can see the whole as we zoom in where the suv went into the garage. they are putting a log up to try to support the rest of the house so it doesn't fall in. this looks like it could be the suv. it looks like a range rover that crashed into that house and so you can see this tow truck right on the scene right now, about to pull it away. and so obviously, there's gonna be still quite a bit of activity on the scene. what happened here, witnesses tell us they heard a loud noise and then saw a female driver had crashed into their

neighbor's garage. >> i was downstairs and i heard a skid, and then the next thing i heard was boom! >> i woke up. i thought it was an earthquake. and this this car was -- this car was in my house. >> the owner received extensive damage. the power and gas had to be shut off. if -- and the gas had to be shut off. police are now trying to determine if alcohol may have played a role in the accident. more than 100 longshoremen have blocked a barge from unloading at the port of oakland. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty is live at the port with the policy change that led to this labor dispute. >> reporter: we haven't seenny protests out here -- seen any protests but there could be. we're not allowed past the gate. you can see there is a barge still out there on the water. it's been there since last night when longshoremen turned

it away. more than 100 workers gathered at the port last night. they say the pacific maritime association is trying to skirt the rules. longshoremen are locked into a dispute over who is allowed to unload ships. union 10 say this their jurisdiction i. the barge tried to throw its lines to nonunion workers. >> this barge is at least 6 feet out of the water at low tide. high tide it's more. so you need to throw a line to somebody on the dock. that's always been on an ilu longshoremen. >> reporter: the ilwu says they recently changed policies. we've put in several calls to the pacific maritime association. but we have not heard back yet. i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara.

his friends and family say running was his passion. >> this was something that he truly loved to do. it's small solace but something that we know he was doing something that he loved. >> a public viewing will be held from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the halstead north gray funeral home in san francisco and from noon until 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. firefighters in southern california are gaining ground on a wildfire burning north of los angeles. the fire is now 60% contained. evacuation orders have been lifted for the lake hughes and lake elizabeth areas. but evacuation orders are still in place for one small community. the fire destroyed at least six homes and damaged nine others. lighter winds and cooler temperatures are forecast in the area today. and fire danger worries are growing here in the bay area with the hotter temperatures on the way. yesterday, in east san jose, firefighters and a calfire helicopter responded to a grass

fire near happy hollow park and zoo. seven acres burned before it was brought under control. it's the fourth grass fire in the last three days. with all of the activity, firefighters had to call in volunteers. >> we had four requests for assistance. i don't remember that happening in one day. >> firefighters around the state have so far battled more than 2,000 wildfires. that's 60% more than last year and 90% above average. alameda is becoming whole again. today, the city is regaining control of alameda point which had been used as station. the area will be developed with homes and businesses, creating thousands of jobs. new this morning, all lanes have reopened on highway 101 in

sausalito after being blocked by a rockslide on rodeo avenue around 2:15 this morning. the debris caused one driver to lose control and that driver said she did not see the rocks in the road until it was too late. >> big rock and then just kind of -- [inaudible] >> the driver who hit the rocks complained of chest pain but does not appear to be seriously hurt. there's -- this is new video of a crash involving a big rig, a car and a pickup truck on the richmond-san rafael bridge. this happened around 3:00 this morning. the crash blocked several lanes but there are no reports of injuries. the cause of the crash is being investigated. san francisco supervisors say more needs to be done to ensure the safety of pedestrians. 964 people were hit by cars last year. that's the highest number of pedestrian accidents since 2000. scott wiener has introduced

legislation that would change city codes to allow for wider sidewalks and improvement at intersections. the legislation could be voted on by the full board of supervisors by next week. want to check in with sal. we've been hearing steve say there's still some fog and clouds out there. there is causing air delays at sfo. that's right about 30 minutes. you should check with your carrier whenever we have low clouds and fog. the planes don't go in and out as fast as they could. steve says the weather will get better. let's take a look at the toll plaza. a little bit of traffic. it seems to be getting better. the 880 ramp is showing improvement. usual lib that's the first thing to -- usually that's the first thing to improve. i wanted to show you a little bit of fog here. northbound 101 looks good. but the fog is moving in. if you are driving in san jose at 101 northbound, it's slow from blossom hill road almost all the way up to sunnyvale. let's go to steve. >> i think i saw 33 minutes,

mcafee reports the attacks tripled during the first three months of this year. mcafee said two events are probably related that's because personal information taken from facebook accounts can be by spammers to gain access to networks. 7:44. another irs hearing on capitol hill this morning. leaders of conservative groups get to tell senators how they were targeted for extra scrutiny by the irs. jamie dupree joins us now via skype. republicans want to know who ordered the targeting, right? >> reporter: yeah. so far we haven't gotten really far on that issue. whether it was from cincinnati or whether the tentacles reached back to headquarters in washington, d.c. a lot of republicans saying they are just not getting the answers they want. today's hearing features a group of tea party representatives from around the

country who have basically come to capitol hill to detail how they were run up and down the flagpole, rattling off document requests made by the irs, that these groups say were simply an effort to try to dissuade them from getting tax-exempt status. we heard from a woman who heads a group called the san fernando valley patriots coming all the way from california to tell her story. karen ken nip said one question she was asked by the irs was to list all of the groups her -- laws her groups had broken and whether they promoted or conducted illegal activity. she had a snappy one liner say "we're the san fernando valley patriots" not "occupy oakland." >> outline for people why should the average american be concerned about this? how does this affect people who may not be trying to apply for

pam cook is in the newsroom with more on an attack reported on a popular jogging trail. >> this happened along the baylands nature preserve trail right here the palo alto golf course and airport. the woman says the man jumped on her back and grabbed at her but she was able to push him off and she ran away. >> based upon what the victim told police, it seemed it was very outrageous and we haven't seen anything like that in this area this year. >> police say two bicyclists came to help the woman who see if she was okay. now investigators want to talk to those cyclists to see if they can get more information on exactly what happened. now, the suspect is described as possibly latino, about 20 years old, 5'8", 160 pounds. he also is described as having buzzed black hair and studs in

>> reporter: in addition to the -- the power pole that was struck by the van, it crashed into the tree. it is snarled with power lines and tree branches. so pg&e is cutting it out section by section. they started that work around daylight this morning. now, i spoke with a neighborhood who heard the gunfire last night and rushed outside to find the shooting victims. >> they loud. it sounded like a bomb. all of the rights -- lights went out. it happened really, really quick. after that, i came over and i just saw the vehicle with the person -- the person who seemed like they passed away. >> reporter: the neighbor shared these pictures. you can see the power lines resting on the crashed van. officers told our photographer the driver of that van died of gunshot wounds. a female passenger is in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. police say around 11:30 last

in san jose, they are up 29.5%. san francisco saw a large increase in cell phone thefts. a south bay asem blamewoman is urging the -- assemblywoman is urging the police department to ask for outside help for crime problems. nora campos wrote a letter to the acting police chief urging him to get help to boost city patrols. but the police department says it does not need outside help. the department has put more than 40 extra officers on patrol after the city's fifth homicide -- fifth homicide in a week on friday. a supervisor who was convicted on corruption, a new replacement vote is being held now. janine de la vega has more. >> reporter: we've seen several people drive up and drop off the ballots here in the voter box. they are not expecting a huge

military brass on how to fix the sexual assault epidemic. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, military leaders say they want to change the culture but they disagree with congress on how to do that. kyla? >> reporter: tori, some in congress believe commanders should be removed from the process of reporting sex assaults. as we take a look at the live hearing, we heard this would be detrimental to the military structure. >> we believe that the role of the commander is essential to any change, any positive change, we will be able to make on this issue. >> reporter: mel of congress demanding change -- members of congress demanding change claim victims are required to report this. each branch has a uniform victim advocate, young men and women who are trained to help victims.

call when an suv crashed into his home. now, the accident happened on keith avenue in the bayview district around 5:30 this morning. neighbors say they were in shock after hearing a loud close and then looked out their window to see a woman had crashed into their neighbor's garage. >> i was downstairs and i heard a skid and the next thing i heard was boom! >> i woke up and i thought it was an earthquake. this cars with into my house. >> about an hour ago, the suv was towed. they are aeggs the damage. the power -- they are assessing the damage. the power was shut off. police are determining if alcohol played a role in this accident. the fbi is looking to see if two bank robberies are connected to other bay area holdups. a cafe bank in millbrae and a wells fargo in san mateo were robbed within two hours of each other yesterday. but agents don't think those two cases are related. in millbrae, three men or boys showed guns and escaped with

crash in a silver or cream- colored car. the lone robber in the san mateo case said he had a gun but never showed one. he also got away with crash. a san francisco sheriff's deputy accused of robbing a bank is scheduled to face a judge today. deputy phil tong is expected in court on bank robbery charges last november in the richmond district. the robbery was captured on this video. court records he filed for bankruptry four months before the robbery. according to "the examiner" an audit listed 4 areas where the housing authority could improve. the housing authority was supposed to hire general maintenance workers but didn't.

because of that, the agency has lost out on federal subsidies. san francisco is moving ahead to vote on which streets would allow oversized vehicles. a policy to keep vehicles longer than 22 feet from staying overnight passed last year. mountain view police are investigating a string of burglaries at medical offices. police say there have been at least four burglaries at one attempted peculiarry since last month -- burglary since last month. two medical offices were broken into on hospital drive. and then two offices were burglarized. and then two days ago, someone kicked in the back door of a fifth office but no one got inside. los gatos has approved a scaleddown version for netflix.

power pole knight in east oakland were both shot and shocked. katie utehs joins us live from the scene with new details from firefighters. >> reporter: well, brian, i confirmed with firefighters that thoicwere, indeed, electrocuted by the downed power lines. however, they could not elaborate on the extent of their, j. let me step out of the way -- injuries. let me step out of the way. you can see the work that pg&e is doing to restore this neighborhood following the fatal collision and shocking of those power lines. this morning, pg&e has removed most of the power pole tangled in the tree and those power lines have been tangle -- has been dangling. they will reconnect the lines and hopefully get the power back on. about 20 homes tonight have power. spoke to one of the homeowners without power. he witnessed the shooting and the crash. >> very loud. it sounded like a bomb. all of the lights went out.

it happened really, really quick. then after that, i came over and i just saw the vehicle with a person that -- that seems like he passed away. >> reporter: the shooting happened around 11:30 on maddox avenue as someone fired into a van. police tell our photographer the male victim died of gunshot wounds. the female passenger took a bullet to her leg. as we're learning may have also been shocked. after getting hit by the gunshot, the neighborhood has been without power since the crash, again, for over eight hours now. pg&e estimates the 20 homes without power will be restored by around 3:00 today. the installation of that power pole is a good sign for this neighborhood. reporting live in east oakland, katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:45. in san jose, two suspects are in custody in connection with a deadly shooting that killed two teenaged boys. yesterday, police announced the

arrest of 19-year-old mathew clifford and an unnamed 17-year- old suspect. they are accused in the may 26th shooting of 15-year-old christian komilang and johnson cular. investigators don't believe the shooting was gang-related. clifford is due in court tomorrow. alameda county sheriff deputies want your help finding a missing woman for this woman of san lorenzo. she's 77 years old and has early onset alzheimer's. she was last seen yesterday morning at herhouse. they say she's driving a white we toyota camry with a -- 2003, toyota camry, 5 aua 431 is the license plate number. a man died yesterday while running in the race in mt. diablo. he was an elite long-distance runner who deeted in the most challenging -- competed in the

most challenging races. his body was found down an embankment. his friends and family say running was his passion. >> once he retired, that is what the one thing hent waked to do. so he -- that's the one thing he wanted to do. so he put his whole heart into it. ner hes not determined the cause of death. a scary incident involving a female jogger. police are asking for the public's help. pam cook is in the newsroom with some of the details of the moments before the reported attack. pam? >> a woman told police that a man attacked her sunday morning as she was running. it happened along the baylands nature preserve trail near the palo alto golf course and airport. the mercury news reports says the woman jogged behind her for about three miles. sometimes getting close enough to make her feel uncomfortable. she tells police that he then jumped on her back and grabbed at her. but that she was able to push him off and he ran away.
