in 2010 the district attorney says someone sent out unemployers from another candidate. flyers from another candidate. she wound up losing by 20 votes. the break came when george shirakawa was booked on charges of misusing public funds and his dna was entered into the state database. >> the dna matched from the stamp matched george shirakawa. this broke the case open. >> george shirakawa turned himself in this morning. the race to elect george shirakawa's successor is headed to election on july 30. she fell short of the 50% required to win in yesterday's

election. with all reporting she received 41%, followed by another who received 31% of the vote. komen race for the cure is caning several walks next year, including in the bay area. it has been canceled in san francisco, washington, d.c. and five other cities. phoenix, boston, chicago, cleveland and tampa bay. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler has the impact of the widespread cancellations. >> reporter: participation in last year's three day walk dropped over previous years. susan g. komen canceled it for 2014 saying it is too costly to hold. >> fundraising. the camaraderie. >> it needs to continue for the support and funds. >> reporter: this is last year's local komen race for the cure. it is unrelated. the race is on for this fall

closed. after briefly reopening this morning the building was forced to close again because of water damage. it started yesterday morning with a water leak on the third floor of the building on 7th street. a police spokeswoman said the lobby and other floors re badly damaged. >> our number one priority is for the safety of our employees and the public. we are assessing and updating as we speak. >> employees are still able to enter the building to go to work. for the second time in months flames shoot through an oakland victorian. the fire department is investigating what caused the fire inside the vacant home. the home had burned before and officials say there wasn't much left inside. smoke and flames were seen from 880 during rush hour. at times flames shot up 20 feet. and ktvu was there when it

burned several months back. in january crews attacked the blaze. police detained two people who were squatting inside the home. an investigation is underway after a body was found in a shopping cart. ktvu's patti lee is where police aren't calling the death a homicide, at least not yet. >> reporter: that's right. not right now but the circumstances are suspicious to say the least. the body was found ght here, wrapped up tight and draped across a shopping cart. >> came to work right here. >> reporter: when he pulled into work this morning he noticed something odd, a package that hadn't been there the night before. >> was in the plastic back. legs to the top, it was like a

a mother who was injured in a crash in fremont yesterday that killed her three-year-old boy died today of her injuries. people brought flowers where the car hit the tree. authorities identified the boy today of angelo gil. his mother, joie gil suffered grave injuries in the crash and died today. her husband and the father remains in the hospital. the search continues for a man suspected of a violent
