pole. it was a gas line. there was a leak and they have capped it off. that is something we have just finding out in the newsroom. 80 westbound between vallejo, pinole, and richmond is off to a good start. 4:29 let's go back to the the desk. we begin with breaking news this morning in the east bay. something that is happening right now. a car has slammed into the front of a cvs pharmacy in hayward. lorraine blanco is there on the scene with the driver's explanation about what happened. >> reporter: you can see right now the tow truck has arrive to tow the car away. there is quite a bit of front end damage on that vehicle. a white accra you see in front of you. we just spoke with the driver. foothill is confusing now that it's become a one-way road. you can see there are signs actually you can't see the signs but they are behind me over here. there are signs in the area

actually warning that it's right turn only over here. but the guy just didn't see the signs. kevin says he was driving south on foothill. just after 3:00 a.m.. heading to a friends house when he got to the light at eighth street. he didn't know it becomes a one- way street. he swerved to avoid it and ended up crashing into the pole. >> i didn't know all the street regulations and this came out of nowhere, basically. i tried to go straight and then without any warning signs it says -- without any warning signs you're supposed to go this way. and it didn't give any signs. >> reporter: the change in the roadway is is part of the 238 corridor project here in hayward. that is supposed to improve traffic flow in the area. i talked with the fire captain on scene he told me this isn't the first time the driver swerved to avoid that median.

the roadway changes were implemented back in march. now the driver here isn't facing any charges. he did suffer a few bumps and bruises but he is going to be okay. at this point he is just in shock. he didn't see the median in front of him. he swerved out of the way. it was a worse situation swerving and going into that cvs store. reporting live in hayward lorraine blanco ktvu channel 2 news. also new this morning oakland police are searching for another driver who plowed into an apartment building overnight. the driver lost control around midnight and hit a hydrant before crashing into an apartment. you can see the huge hole in the wall there. people that lived in the apartment were shaken up but not hurt. a few hours later another driver hit a fire hydrant.

you can see water from the hydrant started spilling out on to the street there. still not clear what caused the crash. president obama is waking up in san jose where he is scheduled to talk to reporters about his health care reform law. he arrived just before 6:00 yesterday. and then he was off to two fundraisers. people who lived nearby if stepped outside to catch a glimpse of the motorcade. >> i think it will be one of the once in the n a lifetime experiences. >> protestors turned out too. this group showing their opposition to the proposed keystone pipeline project. the president has a speech this morning. according to the white house the president will focus on efforts in california to enroll the six mall people in the state that do not have health insurance. the white house says the president will highlight special efforts being made to reach out to uninsured latinos.

janine de la vega will have a live report from san jose that is coming up at 5:00. when the president leaves the bay area this morning, he will be headed to southern california where later today he will begin a two-day meeting with the president of china. the leaders of the world's two largest economies are scheduled to meet. the main topics for the meeting are expected to be cyber security and north korea. this morning the federal government admits its surveillance of americans is much broader than first reported. the national security agency and the fbi is mind the servers. it allows them to track the movements of others. the white house is trying to quell the public anger over secret surveillance programs.

last night the national intelligence record took a rare step of declassifying the operations. it's reviewed by a special court every three months and only examed when there is reasonable suspicion of terrorist attack. a group of activists including tree sitters is protesting the development of an urban garden in san francisco. the former hayes valley farm. demonstrators say they want to stop the area from turning into a luxury apartment complex. they have been protesting there for the past week. oakland's first friday celebration continues to grow. coming up at 4:45 the city plans to hand off some of the speedometer for the street festivals after tonight. that may mean the events days are numbered. time is 4:35. former santa clara city council is expected to face a judge today on false impurse nation.

heaffiliation with a communist government of vietnam. shirakawa is scheduled to be sentenced today for misusing campaign funds and public money. san francisco police hope surveillance cameras aboard a muni bus will help solve a shooting. they jumped off a bus yesterday afternoon. they fired two shots at a bus window. a male passenger was grazed by the bullets or the shattered glass. >> our gang task force is currently investigating this. they are trying to pull any video surveillance and interview any potential witnesses that may have seen something. >> the muni driver immediately drove the bus with the victim inside to san francisco general hospital. muni says it's not standard procedure but praised the

thick fog out there. there is the fog coast and bay. not going to see too much in warming. what we call a very shallow marine layer or thick fog is what i say. 50s on the temps. 51 santa rosa. 55 san jose. fairfield had a gust to 30 miles an hour. but 5-ten degrees warmer away from the coast today. some areas are already in on this warmup. ukiah was 101 yesterday. clearlake was 99. mild by the coast. getting warm to hotter inland. still concord and livermore looking at 90s. today we have the fog. after that sunshine and temperatures inland warming up. warm to hot inland. thick fog. cool by the coast. it will be a huge difference between some of the locations. 60s to almost 100.

90s. the oakland police department will begin a major reorganization this weekend despite a shortage of officers. the interim police chief says there are 35 officers per shift who patrol the entire city. that hasmade it hard for them to respond to crimes and dangerous side shows like the one last weekend that left three people shot and injured. the chief says he's shifting resources to send officers where those side shows happen. >> i can't do this job halfway with just trying to get through a few months. i have to look long-term. >> the reorganization includes a recommendation from the braton consulting firms. more than 100 people packed a san jose plaza calling for an end to gun violence. san jose police have investigated 22 homicides since the start of the year. now some people say they're afraid to leave their home. >> there are people out there that have been telling will me i'm afraid to go outside.

[ applause ] >> san jose police have dozens of extra officers on the street in an effort to curb gang violence. >> the fbi is looking for bandits -- the most recent one happened yesterday at the b of a in san francisco. the men wore black hooded sweatshirts and masks. investigators say two of the robbers jumped over the counter and grabbed money. the men are suspected to be involved in two other recent bank robberies in san francisco. oakland's first friday street festival could be coming to an tend. it costs about $20,000 to hold the event. oakland has put $1.5 million in security, street closures, and permit fees but it plans to pass everything off to a volunteer organizing. organizers do not want to

charge vendors to participate but they are having a hard time. there could be fewer races leading up to the america's cup finals. the swedish racing team may not be ready to compete in the preliminary race series. after the death of a crew member last month. that would leave new zealand and italy to compete in the challengers races. the series could have gone to 21 races. fewer events means fewer visitors and some ticket money would have to be refunded. just released report says the new eastern span of the bay bridge is safer than the new one that is still being used. analysis of the two sections of bridge compares to what would happen on each of them if a quake were to hit today. it says the new bridge is 18 times as strong as the old section in a 7.1 quake. the longer it takes to open the new span,s more likely drivers

will be on the old one when the next big quake hits. demolition sites are being inspected after a building collapse that killed six people. it was in the process of being pulled down when it fell on the salvation army thrift store. split felt like something had blew up, shook, and you hear all of this crumbling. >> another woman who was also pulled from the collapse building has already filed a criminal lawsuit. her attorney says the contractor some for demolishing the building violated several safety regulations. the city is expecting more lawsuits to be filed. the two men featured on the front page of the new york post are suing the newspaper. the image shows the two men standing next to each other

say. it's hot. nothing unusual. around the bay it will be a very foggy morning. some of that thick fog may make it a little tough. some of the bridges over some of the passes. 50s on the temps. 52 santa rosa. i thought it was a little cool this morning. 53 at napa. with high pressure building in, it will be 5-10 degrees warmer inland. santa rosa, napa, concord, livermore. tomorrow will be the hottest day. there will be 100s already. ukiah and clearlake. out to the valley it are will be hot. by the coast around the bay it won't be that bad. by sunday we will see a huge drop. maybe 15-20-degree on some of the temps. fog, sun, warmer for most. warm to hot inland. there is thick fog out there. really the coast doesn't see much 60s. upper 60s and 70s. then you go through the caldecott and you will notice a

huge difference. you will see 80s and 90s. temperatures will continue to warm up tomorrow away from the coast and then we drop it big time sunday and settle in monday and tuesday. 4:50 is the time. tropical storm andrea is weakening as it moves up the east coast but it is expected to bring heavy rain. in florida they brought tornadoes and flooding and heavy winds. it's moving toward georgia and the carolinas. it's not expected to strengthen into a hurricane. three shark encounters at pleasure point. we will tell you why state park workers are telling people to get in the water. a gruesome discovery near a popular hiking spot in marin county. [ male announcer ] 20 piece chicken mcnuggets now on mcdonald's new extra value menu. welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. a body found in west marine is being investigated as a homicide. the victim is a woman in her late 20s and early 30s and her injuries appear suspicious. a hiker made the discovery near a ravine. yesterday morning. not far from point rays national seashore. anyone with information in this case is asked to call the sheriffs department. illegal dumping at a concord lot is raising serious health and safety concerns. neighbors say mattresses, couches, and bags of car badge have been left on an empty lot on pine street. that is not all.

neighbors say the lot is also known as an area to dump drug related waste and attract bugs and rodents. >> the spiders that are most poisonous willly in trash like this. kids can go over there and play on it and get bitten. >> the owner of the property says he plans to fence the lot off by the end of the month to stop the problem. he says he's been footing the bill for cleaning up that trash. the labor problem at six flags is apparently over. mechanics that worked on the rides had been locked out for six weeks. now now they tell us they have reached an agreement with pork operators. they didn't get everything they wanted but they will get overtime pay. this is their first union contract. right now a big surf is rolling in and someone is going to extreme measures to keep the waves for themselves. yesterday these fliers were posted at pleasure point. they detail three shark attacks that happened wednesday night. at the bottom it advises people

to stay out of the water for hours. according to to a state park supervisor the fliers are fake. >> they don't belong to us. somebody stole our logo and basically falsified some documents and posted them for the public. >> the person responsible for the fake fliers could face charges because that is similar to filing a false police report. surfers we talked to say there is enough room in the ocean for everyone. 4:55 is the time. sal, what are you keeping an eye on? >> there is a tree down on southbound 680. this tree blocking a lane. southbound 680 one of the popular routes to get down to the bridge if you are coming in from fairfield you can stay on 80 and use 780 as an alternate to go around the problem.
