or the ages of the males involved. the detectives and crime scene investigators are still inside. we'll have an update at 6. live in milipitas, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. we're following more breaking news. this time a deadly shooting near a junior college in southern california. police say all six victims were women. >> reporter: details are fluid. here's what we know so far. police in southern california say the shooting started just before noon today at a home just off the santa monica college campus. at the same time the president was attending a luncheon just three miles away. now the home in question -- two people were found dead inside. police say the gunman opened fire outside that house. firing at people in their cars. six people were wounded, all of them women. one of the women has died. the shooter then went to the santa monica college campus where he opened fire.

>> it happened right in front of me. i was in my car and a guy on the left side of the street jumped out of a car with a big, black gun and started blasting rounds at all of our cars and the buildings pod er: it's uncl anyone was wounded on the campus. police say they shot and killed the gunman in the library of the community college. they are not certain yet if he acted alone. his name has not yet been released. federal authorities say the incident did not affect the president's nearby appearance. we'll have more on this story as details become available from the news room. debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. today is shaping up to be one of the hottest days of the year. because of the heat, both today and tomorrow are spare the air days. there are also warnings outs for rip currents at the beach.

mark tamayo in for bill tonight. you go to the coast and it's a different story. >> >> that's right. this time of year the weather story of a big temperature range. ranging from 60s coastside. head inland, a different world. you can see the reason why. the key is the wind. we still have the on shore breeze. as a result it's moderating the temperatures. keeping it cool for the beaches. even right around the bay side locations. inland spots, nothing but clear. temperatures have been soaring all day long. current numbers right now, it is 100-degrees in livermore. i think they topped out at 103 degrees. upper 90s for fairfield. cooling off toward the bay. look at half moon bay, only in the upper 50s with that fog nearby. we have one more very warm to hot day in the forecast. some of the inland spots for tomorrow. bigger changes for the second half of the weekend. more on that in a few minutes.

high temperatures come with a warning. at 5:30, how firefighters are stepping up their efforts to prevent brush fires. president obama's trip to california. the president lifted off from moffett field about 10 this morning. he then flew to southern california for a democratic national committee fundraising luncheon in santa monica. mr. obama left for two days of meetings with a chinese leader at a desert estate. the president addressed privacy concern sparked by revelations of classified government surveillance programs. he defended the collection of data, insisting his administration has not turned into big brother. >> when it comes to telephone calls. nobody is listening to your telephone calls. >> the subject of surveillance became the focus of today's event that was originally planned to be about the health care law. >> that's not what this program

is about. >> president obama firing back at critics saying the programs are designed to promote public safety and protect civil liberties. >> you can't have 100% security and also then have 100% privacy. and zero inconvenience. >> the programs provide the government access to certain phone records, including those of millions of verizon customers. mr. obama said agents look at phone numbers and duration of calls but do not listen to calls. >> by sifting through this so- called meta data, they may identify potential leads with respect to folks who might engage in terrorism. >> the president says the information has helped thwart terrorist attacks. he repeatedly stressed that federal judges and lawmakers from both parties are aware of the effort. >> these programs are subject to congressional oversight and congressional reauthorization

and debate. >> the president had previously been critical of these antiterror tactics first authorized during 2006. >> this administration abouts like violating civil liberty is the way to enhance our security. it is not. there are no shortcuts to protecting america. >> the president admitted today that he was skeptical, but that his team has proper libbinged civil liberties and security concerns. >> when you look at the details, i think we've struck the right balance. >> as for the internet and e- mail program, it does not apply to u.s. citizens or those living in the u.s. the president has a lot of support here in the bay area. rob roth is live where he found when it comes to the issue of spying on americans it appears some of that support drops off. >> reporter: president obama may have defended the spying program, but no one we spoke with seemed to agree with him. >> let me check quick. >> reporter: some people feel big brother is watching us.

the government acknowledges it  collects phone records of americans and has been conducting a wide ranging secret spying program for years. >> i am profoundly and unalterably opposed to this. >> reporter: susan teaches priefsy law at the university of san francisco elementary law school. >> to go through everything we do online with unclear standards. with unclear of who is being looked at. >> reporter: the washington post reports the government has been tapping into internet serves and the war on terrorism includes searching facebook. the wall street journal revealed the national security agency has been cataloging credit card transactions of u.s. citizens. all in the name of national defense. >> i think that doesn't give them a blank check to do whatever they say we should trust them to do. >> reporter: here in berkeley where political support for president obama has been through the roof, there is

skepticism. people we spoke with are not with him on this and say they are not persuaded that safety from terrorism comes at a price. >> when i pay for something or go buy a book, what i'm reading, what i'm buying is my business. >> reporter: one man can see both sides. >> shouldn't have anything to fear if you've done nothing wrong. the second is how far can they go? who are they listening to? >> reporter: we received a statement from barbara boxer this afternoon. she says quote, these programs have been in effect for a number of years and have in fact saved lives. reporting live in lafayette, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now. americans are somewhat evenly split over the issue of security versus privacy. a new cnn poll asked people if they would be willing to give up civil liberties to curb terrorism. 40% said they would.

when you break it down by age, 34% of americans under the age of 50 would give up some of their freedoms compared to 50% of those over the age of 50. we have more on the president's speech on ours? go to ktvu.com and click on hot topics. richmond police are investigating the shooting death of a man inside his home. he was take ton a hospital and pronounced dead. the victim's name has not been release. there's no word about a suspect or possible motive. a 43-year-old father received a three year sentence for kidnapping his children and then sailing them away on a stolen yacht. prosecutors say he abducted his young daughter and son from their home in september and took them off in the stolen yacht. he surrendered three days later near santa cruz. a judge today said with good behavior he will serve about 9

months of his three year sentence because of the time he has already served in jail. former a's player jose conseco says he is the victim. today las vegas police cleared the former major league all star in the investigation of a woman who claimed he had raped her. he says he took two lie detector tests to prove his innocence. now he wants to sue his accuser. artemis racing announced it will take part in this summer's americas cup races. the swedish team has been sidelined since their boat capsized last month, killing one of their crew members. the ceo of the team says the team is working around the clock to get their new boat in the water. the first americas cup challenge race is set for july 7th. artemis probably won't be able to race until the end of july. richard ramirez the serial killer has died while on death

row at san quentin state prison. he was convicted in 1989 on 13 counts of murder, sexual assault and other charges. during the 1980s he committed a string of horrific murders, mutilating his victims bodies. prison officials say he died of natural causes linked to liver disease. he was 53. the personal information of thousands of patients at three bay area hospitals may have been stolen. authorities only found out about it because of a drug bust in oakland almost a month ago. jade hernandez to tell us who is affected and the letter that they're going to be receiving in the next couple of days. >> reporter: this is a case of identity theft which began as a drug bust in oakland. the identities of nearly 5000 hospital patients have been compromised. patient notifications go out today. sutter health east bay region notified the public. patients had personal

information taken from the hospital. the information may include social security number, employer, address and birthday. it concerns patients from three different hospitals. >> this is not uncommon. you're looking for one crime and end up finding a completely other crime. >> reporter: almost a month ago a drug-related investigation led the alameda sheriffs unit to 53rd avenue in oakland. inside a drug house, about a quarter pound of meth. what they didn't expect to find, health patient information. they arrested two people. >> it's a personal thing. you're going in to get surgery or whatever and it should be between the hospital and the patient. >> reporter: nancy's husband just had surgery. if she receives a hospital letter, she's not sure what she'll do. >> people that engage in that kind of activity don't limit themselves to one illegal

the troubled nuclear power plant will be shut down. 1100 employees will be laid off. it's taking that step because ofen certainty about the

plant's future. they have been off line since january of 2012. that's when a broken water tube caused a small radiation leak. opponents have been pushing for the plant's closure citing the possible risk to millions nearby. the closure is the newest setback for the nuclear power industry. john fowler spent the day talking to expermits about that what this means. >> reporter: bay area environmentalists and nuclear experts told me they agree, nuclear power faces tough times. our economy depends on reliable electricity. so what now? friends of the earth called the nuclear plant closing a victory. >> i don't think people realize what serious situation we were in. >> reporter: the power plant had a radio active leak and design problems, prompting charges that they disled regulators. >> i wouldn't say -- there were

37,000 megawatts. peaking about 15 minutes ago. more than 45,000 megawatts was available. energy experts tell me unless something dramatic happens there probably won't be any power crises this summer. john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. there are new developments in the building collapse in philadelphia earlier this week that left 6 people dead. a top city official says the man who was operating demolition equipment when the building collapsed will be charged with 6 counts of involuntary manslaughter. a toxicology report shows the equipment operator, sean benchcoff was high on marijuana that day. they say police have raided his home but not found him. the fbi revealed agents raided two southern california businesses in april with ties to state senator ron calderon and his brother. all was quiet today outside ron

calderon's sacramento office be the fbi conducted their search. the raids were at a hospital and pharmacy management business. the fbi is reportedly looking into ron calderon and his dealing with the central basin municipal water district. calderon has not been charged with any crime. an actress is under arrest in connection with ricin-tape tainted letters. shannon richardson was taken into custody in texas. she's had minor roles in television programs. according to some reports, she allegedly mailed the letters because she was angry at her husband and wanted to frame him for the crime. the nation's unemployment rate ticked up slightly in may according to the labor department. it rose a tenth of a point. employers added 175,000 jobs. that's 12,000 fewer than in april and march. those jobs numbers beat

a grand jury has returned a 329 count indictment against the man from cleveland who is accused of holding three women captive. ariel castro faces 177 counts of kidnapping and 139 counts of rape. he is facing charges of aggravated murder for forcing the women to have miscarriages. castro was arrested last month after one of the women got the attention of a neighbor who helped her escape. a tug of war is underway over a small patch. green in san francisco. activists are trying to block a planned housing development using tactics from some similar infamous protests.

>> this is about opening up this space to be an open green space for people to interact with their environment. >> reporter: protesters have settled at the former hayes valley farm. operators of the farm cleared out last week when their temporary permit expired. a new housing complex is planned, but activists are determined to prevent that from happening. they've taken a cue from the occupy movement and year long tree sitter protest. some are camping while others are building platforms in the trees. neighbors have mixed feelings about this protest. >> i do support them. i think we need to be able to preserve some sort of like green space in the city. >> i'm not going to want to deal with an occupy oakland. i lived here 13 years. this is the biggest mess of all of it. >> police have given the squatters written notice to vacate the property. the local neighborhood association has asked the mayor's office to clear the parcel as soon as possible.

the occupiers have planned a community barbecue for tomorrow. if need be they will lock the gates of the farm. >> three bay area hospitals are among 10 in the state now facing fines. according to the department of public health, marin general is facing a $75,000 fine. it's accused of giving a dialysis patient the wrong medication and causing gangrene. they will have to pay $100,000, it's charged with leaving a sponge inside a patient during bladder surgery. and the california pacific st. luke's campus is facing a $50,000 fine because of accusations it left a guide wire in a patient after a cauterization. temperatures are in the high 90s right now. what firefighters are doing to prevent wildland fires like this one in martinez just a few weeks ago. early morning accident

it is really heating up in parts of the bay area. with at least one city topping 100 degrees. but with those high temperatures comes high fire danger. fire crews all over the bay area are standing by ready for the possibility of brush fires. cara liu is live where there are areas that are vulnerable. >> reporter: firefighters are stepping up efforts. they tell us the conditions will be worst this week. compared to just a few weeks ago when a brush fire charred

some 15 acres. the combination of wind, high temperatures and dry conditions has contra costa fire at high dispatch levels. >> we'll staff up for fires so we have more people on the fire earlier. >> reporter: this arson fire a few weeks ago shows how quickly flames can move in bad conditions. firefighters say the blaze consumed 15 acres in about half an hour. >> it's already pretty warm today. it's expected to be hotter tomorrow. as it gets hotter it usually gets drier as well, which doesn't help our cause. >> reporter: over in livermore we found a group of moms letting their kids cool off in the local water fountain. >> it's a lot of fun. >> reporter: at the livermore rodeo, workers have put up more shade areas and rented additional transporting carts.

>> every vendor has gatorade and a lot of water. we have a mister system. people can get some mist throughout the day. >> reporter: back here live, cal fire says there are no plans for additional staffing this weekend here in the bay area. there is a red flag warning in effect through tomorrow evening in many other parts of northern california, including lake county. live in martinez, cara liu, ktvu channel 2 news. four people on a school field trip are recovering after being injured when a muni bus knocked down a light post. according to the fire spokeswoman the bus connector cords became tangled. it hit an adult and a child who both fell. them falling injured another adult and child. a driver in hayward says construction caused an awful lot of confusion this morning and caused him to crash into

the front of a cvs store. paul chambers is live with why the driver is blaming the accident on road work in the area. >> reporter: if you take a look, there are some signs that say do not enter, wrong way. those are easy to see during the daytime. but what about early morning and late at night? that's what the driver said this morning caused a problem because of new construction. he's not the only one upset about the area. for nearly 50 years, marie nickel son has lived in hayward. >> i'm afraid. i'm afraid these cars don't even know what's happening. they might hit me. >> reporter: a few weeks ago she got into an accident because of the construction. today she decided to walk. the project has changed the flow of downtown traffic to a single direction. just before 3:30 this morning a driver of the car crashed into

a cvs. >> just came out of nowhere. i tried to go straight and then without any warning signs it said sounding any warning signs you're supposed to go this way. they don't give you any signs. >> we believe we have adequate signage and about guiding folks to where they need to go. in fact, it was interesting that the accident happened. >> reporter: the driver only had minor scratches after the accident. they will review the police report to determine what caused the accident. if there is something the city can do to improve the signage, it will. however, nicholson says that's not enough. >> i'm 71. i don't need all this new thing that's happening now. >> reporter: it's a little late to change things back. city officials say besides cosmetic things, everything out here is pretty much complete.

oakland police would like to find a driver who clipped a fire hydrant and plowed into an apartment building. it happened about midnight. the folks inside the apartment were shaken up but not injured. the driver escaped on foot. a hayward elementary school is set to hold a toy gun exchange tomorrow. that will be held at -- the principal says that toy guns desensitive children. during the exchange students will receive a book and a chance to bin a bicycle. there will be demonstrations on bicycle safety. there's word tonight of progress on the long awaited free wi-fi corridor. at&t is surveying locations to install wi-fi equipment. when it's up and running the service will be free and without advertising.

a start date for the free wi-fi has not yet been announced. there are also reports that apple will make a major announcement on monday about its so-called iradio service. apple has reached licensing deals with almost all major music publishers. the iradio service is expected to have some of the same features as pandora. disneyland is cracking down on disabled guests who are making money off a special pass that allows them to skip long lines. some disabled visitors are charging up to hundreds of dollars to take park goers with them to front of lines. the company has now sent letters warning people who use the cards for commercial purposes that they will lose their guest assistance passes. a notorious serial killer known as the night stalk sore dead. richard ramirez died this morning after being hospitalized this week. tonight, what the prison is saying about his odd behavior before his death.

the sound of taps floated above a driving rain today as the late democratic senator frank lautenberg was buried. he was the last world war ii veteran to serve in the u.s. senate and received full military honors today. he also was the senate's oldest member. he died monday at the age of 89 after suffering complications from pneumonia. there is still no word on whether bradley manning will be reinstated as a grand marshal for san francisco's gay pride parade. manning is the army specialist accused of leaking military secrets. the san francisco pride board of directors was expected to make a decision today. a spokesman for the pride committee told us that there was still no official word. former san francisco supervisor recently announced that he will not be a grand marshal in this year's parade. he did not say whether his decision had anything to do

with manning. a los angeles county judge hazard red an investigation into the well being of michael jackson's daughter paris. the 15-year-old was hospitalized after she reportedly tried to commit suicide this week. the judge oversees the guardianship. there are reports that paris attempted suicide after a fight with her brother, prince michael. he was reportedly upset his sister had been seeing her biological mother. one south bay business celebrated with a controversial donut. psycho donuts handed out fois bombs. california has outlawed the sale of fois grasp. the donut shop says they were within the law because the fois bombs were free.

national donut day actually was created by the salvation army as a fundraising effort. that was 76 years ago. they delivered donuts to police and other first responders. the first donut day was a tribute to donuts will sees. they're the ones who came up with the idea of frying donuts in the helmets of soldiers, giving american servicemen the name dough boys. police in oakland crack down on a serious and sometimes deadly problem. the strategy they're using to stop side shows on the city streets. big jump in temperatures today across the bay area. neighborhoods that will touch 100 degrees for tomorrow and when the slight chance of thunderstorms could be added to our forecast. ♪

side shows and gunfire, it is not a good mix. that's what happened last weekend and police in ownland want to make sure that doesn't happen again this weekend. john sasaki to tell us what their plan is. >> reporter: the weekend is here. that means side shows will hit the streets. after gunfire erupted last weekend, oakland's police chief says officers are ready to crack down. at the corner of 106th avenue and mcarthur, dozens of skid marks show where fast cars did their damage. >> i care about the safety for the children and the innocent people that liberties around here. >> reporter: interim police chief said this afternoon his officers will be ready for any

sacramento approaching 105 degrees. here is the change for the second half of the weekend, the high pressure beginnings to move out of town. big drop off in temperature is easily a good 10 to 15-degrees on sunday. cooling tonights into monday. there's a little instability associated with this guy. we'll have to hold on to monitor a slight chance of a thunderstorm. slight chance for the bay area hills. what we call elevated convection. dry lightning, slight chance. that'll be for sunday right on into monday morning for the bay area hills. really not expected to happen. something we have to keep an eye on. those storms could produce lightning strikes, but not much in the way of rainfall. with the fire danger, that is a concern there. as far as temperatures for tomorrow, triple digit heat tomorrow. hottest day of the weekend. clear lake, 103 degrees. san rafel, 86. you'll find upper 90s to 100 to 101 degrees. san jose, upper 80s.

transportation officials are now saying that fog may have been a factor in this deadly medical helicopter crash in kentucky. all three members of the crew were killed on impact as the helicopter tried to return to base just after 11:00 last night. the crew had just dropped off a patient at a hospital when that chopper went down. the three victims including a former chief deputy, a flight paramedic and a flight nurse who was only working her second day on the job. the u.s. senate today began debating a bipartisan immigration reform bill. supporters say it provides a pathway to citizenship. especially for young

the killing happened inside a sports authority at the great mall just before 11:00 this morning. this is developing news. robert handa at the mall now with late information that he just received. robert. >> reporter: we have been talking to some mall workers who have said they heard this fight ended in a shooting. just a few minutes ago police told us even though they're not talking about the weapon involved, there was not a shooting involved. it has been a long, pain staking day as investigators try to figure out the city's first homicide of the year. the sports authority store is still closed and taped off as a crime scene. as we reported in our 5:00 newscast, police say officers responded to a call of a fight that broke out between two neals involving a -- males involving a weapon just before 11:00 this morning. word spread quickly among mall workers that a man had been killed and another arrested. >> it's a little daunting. i mean, it's just a little crazy they're shutting everything down that this
