happened. >> officer arrived on scene in about 13 seconds and was able to take the suspect into custody while he was still inside the store. officers were still on scene, discovered another individual who was deceased at the scene. >> reporter: police are not releasing the ages of the people involved or the weapon used. some workers also say they are concerned about their safety. >> i wish that somebody would have came and notified us to tell us be on alert or be on the lookout or some kind of info. >> reporter: it is cooperating with police and it re mains committed to the safe of its customers and retailers. again, the store remains closed while the investigation continues. live in milipitas, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. we're following breaking news of a deadly shooting rampage in santaman monica. police announced at least 7 people have died including the suspected shooter. the suspect killed two people at a house near santa monica

college. then police say the gunman killed two more people as he moved toward the college and gunned down two more on campus. police shot and killed the suspect in the library. >> a male, white, 25 to 30 years of age. wearing all black clothing and what appears to be a ballistics vest. >> someone police are calling a person of interest was taken into custody at the college. this happened about 3 miles away from where president obama was attending a fundraiser. the secret service says it was aware of the shootings and they did not impact the president's event. serial killer richard ramirez died this morning just two days after being hospitalized. ramirez was known as the night stalker. he was one of california's worst serial killers between 1984 and 1985. he also spent time in san francisco. ramirez was convicted of 13 murders and sentenced to death row at san quentin prison.

that is where mike mibach joins us live with more on how ramirez terrorized california. >> reporter: summer '85, i remember having to shut the windows at the house. ultimately it was here right in marin county where the night stalker richard ramirez died at 9:10 this morning. the aviators, the long, wavy, black hair. >> i think i was 6 or 7. booby trapping the house. >> reporter: even today the night stalker gives stefanie a cold chill of fear. >> it was sleepless nights and being very scared. >> reporter: richard ramirez terrorized californians for months in 1984-85. he preyed at night. left satanic signs at murder scenes. killed at least 13 people. the victims were raped, strangled, slashed or shot. the killing spree ended when he was captured in southern california in 1985. four years later he was

sentenced to death and sent to san quentin. >> he's been very reserved for the last several years. hasn't went to the yard and exercised. >> reporter: sam robin son said he guarded ramirez a number of times. >> he's been caught with things that we don't allow. lighters or whatever the case may be. there have been numerous times he's exposed himself to staff. >> i remember he was just a pure evil person. >> reporter: san francisco police chief says in 9184 ramirez killed a 9-year-old girl. in the summer of '85 he was assigned to a night stalker task force. a man was killed in his home. suhr says he ran into ramirez after ramirez was charged with the killing. >> if you saw him and just saw him you just knew there was something wrong. just the dead eyes. he was in the window just standing there. like it was a picture window. concern.

>> reporter: ramirez died of natural causes related to liver failure. he was 53 years old. mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. >> for more on richard ramirez, go to ktvu.com and click on the hot topics section. >> reporter: the heat is on in parts of the bay area. take a look at these hills in martinez. with temperatures on the rise it's raising concerns about fire danger. today is shaping up to be one of the hottest days of the year so far. mark tamayo joins us now. >> reporter: >> two extremes. we've been watching this beautiful camera looking out toward the golden gate bridge. look at the wall of fog heading out. over the coastal hills. temperatures in this region in the mid50s to right around out of degrees. head inland, a completely different story. nothing but sunshine and heat with temperatures mainly in the mid to upper 90s.

as far as the highs from this afternoon, they range from 65 in pacifica all the way to the upper 90s for concord and fairfield. livermore 10 did degrees. that sets a record. set back in 1973. another hot day in the forecast for saturday. coming up, neighborhoods that will approach 100 degrees once again. slight chance of thunderstorms for sunday. high temperatures prompted air quality officials to declare today and tomorrow spare the residents have been asked to telecommute, car pool or take public transportation to work and avoid using yard equipment and lighter fluid on barbecues. high levels of ozone pollution, which is especially harmful for young children, seniors and those with respiratory and heart conditions. stay with us for updates on the hot weather. you can follow mark online. they post the latest forecasts on twitter and facebook.

we have new dell tails on the woman's body found yesterday. today the coroner identified her. they say she ties to the east bay. a hiker found her body yesterday morning near a ravine. her death is being investigated as a homicide. the sheriff's department is interviewing witnesses and says there are no suspects at this time. a cvs is open for business even though a driver crashed into the store earlier today. the man crashed into the store near a street about 3:30 this morning. the store is near the hayward loop that's been under construction. the driver says he was confused and that there weren't any signs. >> i haven't been here in a couple months. i didn't know all the street regulations and this came out of nowhere basically. >> hayward police say the area is clearly marked.

the driver wasn't badly hurt. the store opened about 8:00 a.m. as scheduled. president obama wrapped up a quick visit to the bay area with a speech in san jose where he defended nsa surveillance programs for some cell phone customers. >> nobody is listening to your telephone calls. that's not what this program is about. >> the president's comments come after news emerged that the government has been looking into the phone records of verizon customers. the surveillance programs are designed to strike a balance between public safety and protecting civil liberty. >> you can't have 100% security and also then have 100% privacy. and zero inconvenience. >> the president isn't the only one defending the program. senator diane feinstein said the program has foiled multiple terrorism plots. word the government is tracking

phone records is sparking public outrage. whether they think the president's comments are enough to ease privacy concerns. >> reporter: most people we spoke to say they do not like the practice of government surveillance. they say it simply goes too far. here at the lafayette beauty store, the owner showed us an app called on spot social. >> it allows you to collect people's e-mail addresses and creates social media connections. >> reporter: with the approval of the customer. good for business, but he has concerns. >> where does this go from here? what is on spot social do with that information too? that's another thing that i've always thought about. >> reporter: that is the concern many people we spoke with say they have about the revelations the government has been collecting phone records and credit swipes. >> i want my privacy and i

contacted thousands of patients to tell them their personal information had been compromised. the information wasn't medical, but it did include birth dates, issue social security numbers, addresses. a drug bust turned up personal information for almost 5000 fro submit. >> you're looking for one crime and find another crime. >> this isn't the first time a security breech has impacted sutter. a few years ago a stolen computer forced the company to contact more than 4 million patients about compromised information. >> lawmakers were back meeting at the capital today trying to hammer out a budget deal before the deadline. for the first time in years the state legislature is dealing with a budget surplus instead of a deficit. lawmakers are debating what to do with the extra money.

senate leader says the legislature and the governor are mostly in agreement about the main sticking point, public education funding. a judge postponed sentencing former san clara supervisor george shirakawa. he pleaded guilty to 12 counts of corruption. sentencing haenpostponed until july 19th. today shirakawa was arraigned on the new charges. he pleaded not guilty. the defense says those new charges are a violation of shirakawa's plea agreement. putting the brakes on side shows. the police plan that they hope will make scenes like these a thing of the past. facing difficult questions about the future of power after a california nuclear plant shuts down. >> $100 answer to a 5-cent question. >> could it mean power shortages? masked men targeting bay

four bay area banks in just a matter of days. authorities say it's the style of the robberies that make them so uncial usual and that's why they're so concerned. david stevenson is live in san francisco where he talked with a man who says he witnessed the most recent robbery. >> reporter: we learned more about why these robberies are considered so unusual. we spoke to a man who says he witnessed these robbers escape. a day after a co group of robbers made awarning signs with an undisclosed amount of

cash. >> heard. i turned and they were just coming out. >> reporter: steven says he saw the robbers emerge. >> two pulled the mask off. one didn't. he was the last to get in. i looked and said they just robbed that bank. >> that are armed and dangerous. >> reporter: three men described as black males between the ages of 20 and 35 years of age are wanted in four bay area bank robberies. three of which took place this week. >> they hold the tellers and customers at the bank. they jump over the counter, take the money, brandish the guns and flee the scene. >> reporter: takeover style robberies are unusual. >> we tend to see what we call note jobs. they will pass a note demanding money. >> scary because i come here thinking it's safe. >> reporter: investigators say no one has been hurt. the hope is the robberies will be solved soon. >> we have a tremendous solve

rate on bank robberies. also there's a lot of technology involved. so we're very hopeful that before somebody gets hurt we'll get those responsible. >> reporter: the fbi is asking the public to call the san mateo sheriff's department or the san francisco police department or the fbi's anonymous tip line. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. four people including two children were hurt today when the rope attached to the overhead poles on a muni bus came loose. it was on market near main street just before 10:30 whenned rope came loose and knocked down a sign. an adult and child were hit by the sign and fell on to another adult and child. all four were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. muni is investigating how that rope came loose. oakland's interim police chief is releasing more details

on the plan to crack down on side shows this weekend. >> we are rolling out extra units. we have our crime response teams that'll be out there tonight and tomorrow night. >> this comes after three people were hurt in a shooting last weekend at 106th avenue. the chief said the potential for violence is higher this weekend because of the hot temperatures. activists say police have warned them to leave an old farm in san francisco or face the possibility of arrest. the protesters have on on the site since saturday. protesters say the land should remain open space, but a redevelopment project plans to use that land for housing. the protesters say they don't plan to leave any time soon. the nuclear power plant will be shut down for good. the plant near san diego has been out of commission since january 2012 when a broken water tube caused a small

radiation leak. opponents have long pushed for the plant's closure. >> i don't think people realize what a dangerous situation we were in. >> the decision was made because of uncertainty about the plant's future. the 1100 employees will be laid off. it was a hot one out there today. tomorrow it's going to be more of the same. temperatures topped 100 degrees in livermore today. that's where a group of moms let their kids cool off in a local water fountain. organizers of the livermore rodeo are taking precautions for tomorrow's event. they will have water misters set up. >> livermore approaching 100 degrees for saturday. we have the other extreme for today, the fog still hugging the coastline. trying to blanket the golden gate bridge. you can pick out the tower just

poking through. just need to look at the clouds. dense fog. warm air compressing the marine layer. it's been sheared apart from north to south. overcast, especially from the golden gate bridge. as far as current temperatures, they are still in the 50s in half-moon bay. still mid to upper 90s. another warm to hot day. sunday and monday, more clouds. have very hot tomorrow in livermore. by lunchtime, 90. high pressure still in command of our weather. with that, fire danger remains elevated for tomorrow.

look at the big range out toward the coast. mid out of. approaching 105 degrees. weather system moves in. big drop in temperatures by sunday. there is enough instability with this guy that we do have to at least introduce the very slight chance of a very isolated thunderstorm for the bay area hills. that'll be for sunday and to monday. main concern here is if we do get a thunderstorm, a slight chance. would not produce much in the way of rainfall. it would trigger a lightning strike possibly. with that fire danger will remain high. we'll have to watch out for that. santa rosa, 90 degrees. 99 out toward fairfield. brentwood 99 tee agrees. look at the triple digits. san jose, upper 80s. morgan hill, 95 degrees. approaching the lower 70s. winds, also picking up near the coastline throughout the day
