hundreds of lightning strikes are being spotted all across the bay area. this morning's wild weather now has fire agencies on alert. a fire scene becomes a crime scene in san francisco what the crews found when they responded to an early-morning fire. >> that black, black smoke was just bill billowing out of the car. >> a stretch limo, ten women heading to a fire. this time it's in the east bay. some of the women in their 90s.

"mornings on 2" starts right now. well, good morning. welcome to a brand-new day, monday, june 10th. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm it -- i'm tori campbell. let's let's gee ginn with weather. i saw some rain. >> yeah. there's lots of reports of rain and lightning from livermore and san jose. this whole system will be with us today. i think this will be with us today. i think reports of hail and it would not surprise me to see funnel clouds. here's sal. we're looking at 237. we're seeing a lot of stop-and-

go traffic. the traffic is moving well until you reach the macarthur maze and then it slows down when you reach the toll plaza. back to the desk. new this morning, san francisco police are taking over the investigation into an early-morning house fire. ktvu's alex savidge is there were more on why the scene is a crime scene. >> reporter: good morning. this house in the richmond district was turned into a crime scene shortly after a fire was put out here. san francisco firefighters got here early this morning and discovered a good-sized marijuana growing operation inside once they put out the fire. you can't see much damage at the front of the home. i'm told most of the fire was at the back of the house. take a look at the pot that was seized here. san francisco police loaded bags filled with hundreds of marijuana plants into the back of a pickup truck this morning.

investigators believe all of it may be worth several hundred thousand dollars. the fire started just before 1:00 a.m. at this home on the 500 block off 35th avenue. the firefighters who went inside found the pot plants and a dangerous electrical set up, a ventilation system as well. certainly, challenging conditions for those crews. >> well, generally, these structures have been -- walls have been moved around to accommodate, you know, hiding what's going on in the building. there's a lot of obstacles getting back there. a lot of electrical wiring. >> reporter: an arson investigator was called out this morning to try to figure out the exact cause of the fire. the electrical wiring will be a major focus for the arson investigator. no one was here when the fire crews arrived. but investigators do believe that there were people living at this home. it appears to be inhabited. the san francisco police narcotics traffic force has stepped in and will be heading

up the investigation, obviously trying to find the owners of the property and trying to figure out who was running this marijuana grow inside this home in san francisco. live this morning in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, alex. happening right now -- a fire watch covering parts of the north bay, the east bay and the diablo range. isolated thunderstorms and lightning, making firefighters nervous. as steve told you, there were hundreds overnight in the east bay, napa, sonoma and solano county. here's what we wanted to show you, this photo taken by a viewer, north of vacaville. this one happened, it happened in menlo park, about 4:30 this morning. ktvu cameras were rolling. several lightning strikes lit up the skies. calfire has put several extra firefighters on stand by watching storm and what's happening. lightning is blamed for an overnight grass fire, one that happened outside of vacaville. it started about 12:30 this

morning, burned for about three hours on pleasant valley road before it was put out. 7:04. a teenager was driving a car that hit and killed a bicyclist yesterday in planton. police say an 18 -- pleasanton. police say an 18-year-old from pleasanton struck a husband and wife as they rode their bikes on foothill road. the coroner has confirmed that 58-year-old diana hurstworst of dublin was knocked off her bike and killed. >> we'll be looking at the driver's speed, the vehicle, if there's mechanical vehicles, the actions of the bicyclist and whether or not i toxcation is a factor. >> the husband was treated for a leg injury. the husband said the teenaged driver waited for police to arrive. no charges have been filed as of now. another bicyclist was killed yesterday after colliding with a truck. it happened on main street about 1:00 yesterday afternoon. the contra costa times reports

the bicyclist in his 50s had been riding in the bike lane but apparently veered in the path and an investigation is underway. happening now -- apple fans are lining up waiting for the worldwide developers' conference. ktvu's brian flores is outside of the moscone center waiting to tell us what apple may unveil today. what do you think, brian? >> reporter: well, you know how these conferences go. it's always shrouded in secrecy and speculation. we're live outside the moscone center. as you can see, a lot of people, hundreds, probably close to a thousand wrapped around the center this morning. the doors just opened a few moments ago as they make their way into the worldwide developers' conference. we're not allowed in to show a preview, just to show what the exhibit floors look like. what can we expect? for certain, apple will be unveiling updates and changes

to the ios system. tim cook will kick off the conference. also changes to the osx system. and it's reported they will unveil a new mac that's said to be thinner and faster than its predecessor. >> they are catching in the mobile space. and i think the next year will be telling in what they announce this week. it will be kind of telling where it will go. >> reporter: today, finally, we may hear about a music streaming service which may be similar to pandora. but of course is a big day for apple. the news that apple stock's has fallen about 37% this last september, and people are anxiously waiting for the doors to open. it opened about five minutes ago. the thing is always shrouded in secrecy. experts are not anticipating

the unveiling of a new iphone or tv. experts are saying not to rule that out. we'll have another update as "mornings on 2" continues. we're live here in san francisco, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. quite a crowd out there. let's check in with sal and see if there are crowds on the morning. how is the east shore? >> it's crowded. there are crowds out there. westbound traffic slow coming up to the macarthur maze at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's also pretty crowded because of earlier problems. things are getting a little bit better since the stall was taken care of rather quickly but the traffic is backed up to the maze. also this morning we're looking at the peninsula and traffic is a little bit better. 280 we had an earlier crash. no major problems there. i want to check out the contra costa county, the slowest traffic here is on highway 4 from antioch to pittsburg. let's go to steve. all right, sal. well, here we go with our very unusual, strange, crazy weather for june. let's not forget there's a lot of low clouds and fog and

temperatures have actually plunged inland. it was the lightning show overnight that continued for some and some of the rain, mostly cloudy, thunderstorms. in fact, this whole system is driving from east to west, rotating back offshore. i think it will come right back onshore. anything goes until the low is far enough east. it's down off to southern california, and it will move into the san joaquin valley. it's sending in moisture and bands of unstable air. thunderstorms today. again, i think there could be -- maybe some funnel clouds. it would not surprise me one bit. light rain for some. moderate for others. had about 400, 500 reports of lightning strikes. you can see the low in the circulation is driving in the north. sonoma county, mendocino, lake, napa county. i think the first to get in on this. but other areas are picking up. livermore, san jose. you can see some of the lightning over lake county and ukiah. also rain towards cloverdale, night. forestville. a couple of reports just thunder and lightning rocking.

and some of the areas are getting rain, some are getting thunder and lightning. some are getting a mix of everything. there's also some low clouds there. but again from san jose, they had a pretty good downpour about an hour ago. things look to be calming down. you can see right there, it all bears watching, especially as we get heat. it goes right over fremont, and back to san mateo, daly city, south san francisco. watch how this starts to rotate. it looks like it rotates off, a little low forming. this could be extremely active this afternoon when we start to -- remember, the days are very long. windy for some, showers, thundershowers, a little mix of blue in there. a lot of low and high-level clouds. temperatures are well below average and will stay here today and tomorrow. today, thunderstorms, i think possible, you know, reports of hail would not surprise me later on. even out to the valley, maybe some funnel clouds. breezy, mild, but not much

whammer. another low drops in on sunday. >> thank you. 7:10. social media being blamed for a santa cruz county house party, one that ended with a house being trashed and four people arrested. the santa cruz county sheriff's deputies say a 16-year-old girl invited friends over to watch a movie on saturday night. but then someone sent sent out a text message -- sent out a text message and put it on facebook. about 300 people showed up and neighbors started to block the house to keep kids out. four people were arrested at a traffic stop when deputies found jewelry from the home in their car. it's happened again. another limo fire with ten women inside, some in their 90s. how one caregiver's sense of smell saved the day. telling her how much we loved her and that we're gonna miss her. >> saying goodbye to another victim from that campus shooting in santa monica. what we're finding out about the suspect and what that

decent, living, committed people. >> police say 23-year-old john d.a. was the shooter. they -- john zawahri. three more people killed and five others injured. the gunman was shot and killed by police. the man accused of killing seven people at oakland's oikos university is due back in court. a judge will get a progress report on the mental capacity of one goh. in january, the judge ruled goh is not competent to stand trial for hast year's campus massacre. he's being held in a mental hospital and the judge has suspended all legal proceedings against hill. we're findthing out more -- we're finding out more about the man who claims he leaked top-see cold front information about the u.s -- top-secret information about the u.s.

government. kyla campbell has more. >> reporter: he works for booth, allen, hamilton, one of the firms that handles u.s. intelligence information. snowdon claims to be the person that leaked information that the nsa was collecting phone records of tens of millions of phone records. the feds say they are only looking -- looking at specific numbers of those who could be involved in terrorism. but he says they went too far. the 29-year-old is in hong kong right now. he says he risks decades in jail revealing this information. >> the yetest fear i have re-- the greatest fear i have about the outcome of this is nothing will change. >> reporter: meanwhile, snowdon has worked for the security firm for less than three months. the firm says "news reports that this individual has claimed to leak classified information are shocking.

if accurate this represents a grave violation of the code of conduct and poor values of our firm." i've contacted my source at the white house, so far they are not releasing any information coming forward. kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. nelson mandela, he's still in a johannesburg hospital. family members are at his side. he's 94. today is the third day he's been in the hospital. doctors say he's being treated for a recurring lung infection. prayer services are being held all across south africa in his honor. it is 7:17. president obama says his california summit meeting with china's president was terrific. the two leaders met for eight hours during two days at rancho mirage in southern california. president obama reportedly pressed the chinese president on cyber attacking attacks from china and the two leaders announced that they agree that north korea must give up its

nuclear weapons. joe biden is coming to san francisco later this week. he's scheduled to appear at a fund-raising breck breck -- at the home of hickey on friday. the visit was changed last week. $2500 are buy you photo with the videotape. lawyers in philadelphia now examining the site of that deadly building collapse. i want to show you video. they are sifting through debris and taking photographs of the area. building was in the process of being demolished when it collapsed down onto a thrift store. one lawyer said the work should have been done by hand and not by heavy machinery. a crane operator is facing manslaughter charges related to that building collapse. police say the operator was high on marijuana and pain pills while he was running the crane. so far, at least four lawsuits

have been filed. back here at home, an incredible story from san pablo. good samaritans rushing to rescue after a rollover crash that happened on westbound 80. now, a viewer sent us this video that you are looking at from the scene last night. you can see a group of people actually flipping over that offturned suv and then going in and rescuing the people inside. the chp says none of them suffered major injuries. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. well, the police chief of east palo alto says he's focused on long-term solutions for dealing with that city's gun violence. it's been three weeks since he declared a crime emergency after several shootings. police have made more than two dozen arrests. a lot of them were gang- related. more police officers are out patrolling the city. but the police chief said the department is focused on prevention programs to help reduce the crime. 7:19. a company that provides

business information is now buying one of its sources. far fax provides detailed information onus cars -- on used cars. ihs will pay $1.4 billion for polk. that's almost 50% more than earlier estimated. the deal must still clear anti- trust regulators. bay area gas prices are down slightly. the highest price, as usual, is in san francisco, where the average is $4.05. in oakland, the average is $3.96 for regular and it's a penny more in the south and north bay. all of those prices are down between 2 and 3 cents from last week. the national average has edged up to $3.64. a dog who has been named a hero for saving two young girls got a homecoming like no other. this morning kabang and her

want to rent out space can expect a tax bill. many are using online services to rent out holes, apartments, cottages, even mobile homes to travelers staying in palo alto. however, the city's tax code says anyone who provides hotel services must pay hotel taxes and that means a 12% tax for each transaction. 7:24. conservatives don't want to be left out of the text boom and one of the billionaire coke brothers is sponsoring a liberty hack-a-thon june 21st and 23nd. now, the event's website says this will be a competition to develop a web or mobile app in one weekend. it will be focused on promoting, "economic firemen." all right. 7:24. let's check in with sal. pretty crowded at the toll plaza? >> yeah, it is. this is because of an earlier problem, tori and dave, westbound. just one, little problem really

does make a difference. this problem was gone, at least an hour ago. but traffic is backed up all the way to the maze. if you are looking for an easy commute, right now is not the time. maybe in an hour or so. we'll see better and if you have the luxury to rearrange the day, not all people do. northbound 101 in san jose, we looked around for crashes. there was some sort of a slow- moving vehicle. it's even better than we saw it. but still some slow traffic getting into san jose. contra costa county slow traffic on highway 4 in antioch. we had a couple of minor incidents. 680 is slow heading south to walnut creek. let's go to steve. thank you. some areas have a little bit of sunshine. some are cloudy. others have the rain or the thunder and lightning. things have been active up in the north. napa, a little bit towards the peninsula and also south bay but that may pick up later. look how that is wrapping around. today will be very interesting, very active. i think we get afternoon heating here. this is going to play into what

could be some severe weather. probably out to the valley, not for us, it will be slows. mostly cloudy, thunderstorms today. the low responsible for it is just off vandenburg. it will punch in around fresno, the wraparound is what's giving us the clouds. as this moves in, it will take a lot of the moisture with it. in june, incredible. thunderstorms for today, and a possibility not only of lightning but again, you know some of this is producing moderate to heavy rain. dry lightning. but the fire danger continues to be dry. windy as well. we are gating pretty good gusts. thunderstorms, a mix of sun and clouds. this is a definite midwest pattern. 60s on the temperatures for many. very, very 70s. looks like this will be with us today. the low will be far enough east we'll on the cooler, breezy side. a little bit warmer. there are signs of another low dropping down from the north. temperatures will go below average.

mother nature is putting on quite a show with plenty of wild weather. hundred of lightning strikes are being spotted all over the bay area. that, of course, has fire agencies on alert. ktvu's katie utehs joins us live from menlo park. you've been watching for lightning strikes for the past few hours. seen many? >> reporter: it's been quite the show. i'm here in menlo park. just to orient you, my -- orient, you my video is facing east. the storms we recorded between 4:30 and 5:30, we have would -- we have reports of hundreds of

lightning. now a fire watch covers parts of the north bay, east bay and the diablo range. one man we spoke with this morning, watched the lightning as he drove from sacramento to menlo park early this morning. >> a couple of flashes and some rain. pretty unusual, though, for this time of the year. >> reporter: yeah, odd. was it across the sky or straight down? >> straight down, straight down. a couple of flashes, down, very odd. >> reporter: you've taken to our facebook page to give us first-hand accounts of the weather. this is frommerric klug of brentwood. he says the -- from eric klug in frontwood. he said this was at 1:30 this morning. is a -- this is a lightning bolt from mathew henderson, north of vacaville. back out here live in menlo park, you can really see the

dry brush behind me. i'm standing by some drytions. that's the concern when you mix that with that dry lightning. that's when we get into trouble. if you have been able to snapshots of the lightning overnight, please send them to us on twitter or you can post them on facebook page. katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. police in sunnyvale are hoping witnesses will come forward with information leading to an arrest in the city's first homicide of the year. police say someone fired several shots outside the entrance of the peacock lounge on fremont avenue early sunday morning. one person was killed. another injured. according to the mercury news, the victim was a security guard for the lounge, people were gathered at the club to watch a hip-hop performance. police in pan sab blow will have new high-tech crime fighting rules. there's been a rise in the

number of shootings. and now the police will plan to install cameras and they will be able to read license plates and even identify the people inside the car. the oakland police headquarters is due to reopen today. the building was closed last tuesday after a broken third- floor toy let flooded the building. more than 50 officers were temporarily moved during the cleanup process. damage is estimated at $250,000. 7:33. two freeway signs are now covered in graffiti on the busy section of 880. this is causing real confusion, especially for drivers not familiar with the area. tara moriarty is in oakland and says caltrans does plan to remove the graffiti but the big question is when. >> reporter: yeah, we haven't gotten any response from caltrans yet. imagine most people are not in the office until 8:00 this morning. this graffiti is pretty glaring. it could be considered

dangerous. you can make out the 80 west, 580 west and 80 east. if you are looking for cities to guide you, they are missing. taggers struck late friday, early saturday morning on 880 northbound in oakland just before the macarthur maze. the signs for the freeway split have been painted over. we spoke to the chp and while they say no one has called to complain, for some drivers it will certainly be confusing. >> it distracts you a little bit. you start to look at what's written. some of it is beautiful. the painting is beautiful. but i wish it was a different venue, some place elsewhere they could do that and people could appreciate it. >> reporter: no word yet on how much it will cost to remove it. caltrans should be removing it hopefully sometime today. live from oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, tara. 7:34. a scary weekend incident in the east bay is bringing back some bad memories of a highway tragedy just a month ago. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom now to tell us about

the incredible rescue this time. pam? >> reporter: yeah, police in walnut creek are now investigating a fire in a limo packed with women heading to a party. it happened yesterday morning in the city's retirement community of rossmoor. seven elderly women and three caregivers were heading to a 96th birthday party in sonoma when their limo burst into flames. moments later, the driver pulled over to the curb and ordered everyone to get out. but it was not an easy escape. >> there was smoke and the laywere coming out of the back of the -- ladies were coming out of the back of the car. i was telling them to hurry up. i helped one lady out because she uses a walker and then as i was moving down the comedy -- cul-de-sac with the lady, flames, huge flames burst out of the first third of the car. >> the caretaker was able to smell the smoke before the other women. everyone is get out safely.

the women went onto the birthday party in other cars. this limo fire in walnut creek comes one month after the deadly tragedy on the san mateo bridge. five women heading to a wedding celebration were killed when they became trapped in the back of a limo. the chp is investigating the cause of the fire and the response by the limo driver in that incident. in the walnut creek incident, investigators believe an electrical fire caused that fire. pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. a final debate is scheduled tonight for a san jose city budget and the public is invited to attend. mayor chuck reed is asking for $16.4 million to restore police officers' pay, 3 million to boost recruitment and another 3 million for anti-gang efforts, the proposed budget calls for the homeless encampments. the council is expected to vote

tomorrow. california lawmakers have less than a week to work out a new deal before the deadline on the 13th of june. after years of deficits, lawmakers are deciding what to do with an unexpected surplus. the question is whether to restore programs cut during the lean years or put the money into a rainy day fund. if lawmakers don't make a deal by june 15th. their salaries are suspended until they do. supporters are closely watching the u.s. supreme court about prop 8. the justices have until the end of this month to rule on the state's ban on same- sex marriage. a ruling could come any day. but analysts caution that the legal wrangling won't be over even after the decision comes down. there are differing legal opinions about whether any ruling would apply for california only, to all 50 states or in the most extreme example to only the two couples

represented in this lawsuit. starting next month, the price of muni's monthly passes are going up. on july 1st, the price of the muni only pass will rise from $64 to $66. last year there was a similar $2 increase. the senior, disabled and youth passes, they are going up by a dollar. the single ride tickets will remain $2. all right. well speaking of the roads and the rails, let's check in with sal. still crowded? >> 684 -- 684, yeah. we don't have anything major going on. this is highway 4. it doesn't look too bad here on the willow pass grade. but it is she coming into pittsburg and out of antioch and the traffic is going to be busy. i also want to show you the traffic at the toll plaza has not completely recovered after some earlier problems on the bridge. it was a stalled vehicle. it was gone -- it's been gone

for a while. but traffic was slowed down at the metering lights and now had has -- has to -- unwind. 21 minutes from 238 to mowry avenue. traffic is better after fremont. 7:38. let's go to steve. thank you, ev a very good morning. active morning. if you don't have any thunderstorms or lightning or even light rain, this is one of those midwest patterns. wait a few minutes. i think things will changed. this is incredible for us. i think things will pick up. the main source has been in the north, mendocino county, lake county, there's a pretty good line coming, wrapping back in from the valley. mostly cloudy, thunderstorms, not only likely overnight but i think later today. we get a little bit of heating. neuprex in the clouds. the low responsible for it will not move east until tonight and then we'll be far enough west that we don't have to -- that we won't have to worry about

it. during the day, thunderstorms could pop up. i cope an eye on the sky, watch -- i would definitely keep an eye on the sky. watch out for anything. i think things could pick up, not only in the form of lightning, which has been numerous, 400, 500. some of this looks to be collapsing a little bit and just turning into more rain. there are no-doubt-about-it lightning strikes. also coming in from lakeport, santa rosa, very heavy rain, thunder and lightning in forestville. and then out towards -- well, in the valley, wrapping back into thirds santa clara valley, san jose, back over to fremont. and then even daly city. it's a fine line here. some areas you may get the sun. you might see lightning or things could pop up. this is could filter over us.

the u.s. economy has started to improve. that is helping with investors. the markets have been mixed. taking a live look at the big board, the dow is up 13. the nasdaq is up 10 and the s&p up 2. google is close to buying the israeli mapping service according to a newspaper in israel. google will pay $1.3 billion. last month there were reports that facebook was offering $1 billion. comcast is adding more neighborhood wi-fi hot spots in the market where it has cable service. the service will be free to comcast cable customers. people who are not comcast customers will also be able to

hundreds of marijuana plants into the back of a pickup truck. investigators believe it's probably all worth several hundred thousand dollars. this fire broke out at 35th avenue. just about 1:00 this morning of the those first cry -- first fire crews were alerted by neighbors who saw smoke coming from the garage area and flames from the back of the house. when they went inside, that's when they wound the marijuana plants. they also found a dangerous electrical setup and a ventilation system. >> there's a lot of different obstacles getting back there, a lot of wiring, a lot of ventilation. it makes it very difficult for companies. >> reporter: the exact cause of this fire remains unclear. an arson investigator has been called in from the san francisco fire department to try to pinpoint the cause. of course, the electrical wiring setup in this house will be one of the focuses.

that huge shark caught off the coast was not pregnant. an autopsy revealed that the stomach with sea water and a seal or maybe a sea lion. it looked like it was pregnant. it's also possible the shark may have given birth earlier this year. it also may have been more than 15 years old. it was captured last week off huntington beach, weighed more than 1300 pounds. that may have been the biggest shark ever caught. and then there was this -- the great escape caught on camera.

strikes all over the bay area. this is making firefighters very nervous. ktvu's katie utehs joining us live here in menlo park. what's it like out there, katie? >> reporter: well, dave, we've seen decreased amounts of lightning strikes. as you can see, there's this dry brush in my hand and dry brushes and grass nearby with the lightning that we witnessed, really making things scary for firefighters. the whole bay area on firewatch. with the lightning strikes throughout the morning we have been asking to see your pictures of the storm. tiffany posted this photo to our facebook page. she's in brentwood. you can see the bolt of lightning with three prongs illuminating a very black sky. leslie gibbs posted this picture with two bolts coming down at the same time. quite the show. here's video of what we watched from the south bay. lightning cracked across the sky every couple of minutes or

investigating to figure out what happened. seven elderly women and three caregivers were heading to a 96th birthday party in sonoma yesterday morning from the retirement community of rossmoor, when suddenly, the driver pulled over to the curb and ordered everyone to get out. but it was not an easy to escape. one woman even needs a walker. >> after we got everybody out, the smoke was just billowing out of the -- more of the front -- the first third of the car. >> the limo, completely destroyed, as you can see. but everyone did manage to get out safely. the women actually went onto the birthday party in other cars. this rim mow fire in walnut creek comes one month after the deadly tragedy on the san mateo bridge. five women heading to a wedding celebration were killed when they became trapped in the back of a limo. the chp still investigating that incident. the cause of the fire and the response by the limo driver.

things are getting a little bit better. if this was a normal way, i think the backup would be more robust. right now it's backed up to the middle of the parking lot, make a little bit more than -- more than that. the busy traffic, northbound 101, minor accident at trimble. 280 is a good bet to get in the valley. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a very good morning. when we last met, it was one of those crazy patterns, anywhere from 55 to 110. yesterday, everything started to collapse, actually saturday night and saturday afternoon. now we have the low responsible for it. mo everyoning over us and sending in not only thunderstorms but a much, much cooler air mass. there is a little low within the low already forming. you can see it right there. that has to rotate back in. if you are on the san mateo coast, i think you will see that rotating unless you have the low clouds and no breaks. cloudy to mostly sunny. a little bit over san jose. went 15 to 30.

there have been gusts to 30 plus, the main core, the upper low, is going to move in towards fresno. san joaquin valley tonight. as long as it's there. it sends in the counterclockwise position. very unstable pattern. any heating would help this along. any sunbreaks are going to aid in helping develop thunderstorms later on. as the main event was overnight. lake county, mendocino county, sonoma, and a little bit in the east bay, it was lit up like a christmas tree. about 400, 500 strikes. light rain, occasionally bursts of moderate rain. would not surprise me out to the valley, get some severe weather or reports of hail. but for us, again, lightning is possible. you can see some of that, it looks like it's winding down a built. there are a little bit of breaks. there were some decent totals and -- totals and then the lightning count was off the charts. saint helene nonhad reports of the there's areas of rain

selection is underway in florida in the george zimmerman trial. zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the killing of trayvon martin. rene marsh is live in florida to tell us what's happened so far in court toda good morning, rene. >> reporter: forming, tori. george zimmerman -- good morning, tori. george zimmerman looks relaxed wearing a navy blue suit. he was in the courtroom as hundreds of jurors were questioned. the search is underway for six people among a pool of 500 potential jurors from seminole county, florida to hear the case against george zimmerman. he's charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death. 17-year-old trayvon martin. zimmerman says he was acting in self-defense. his attorney marco mara says he's looking for jurors without agendas. >> someone who is fair, will be open to the law and the evidence and most importantly, somebody who is not going to

trayvon martin have declared today national hoodie day in his honor. later today, oakland demonstrators plan to wear hooded sweatshirts. martin was wearing a hoodie when he was shot killed. today's protest in oakland starts at 3:30 this afternoon at the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station. it will end at 14th and broadway, similar hoodie protests are planned all across the country. a new crime crackdown at one bay area city. the incredible high-tech tool they hope will capture criminals on the move. the clock is ticking when the u.s. supreme court could issue a ruling on california's proposition 8.

biggest apple story you will see at least for the in exweek. hundred of if not -- for the next week. hundred if not thousands are here for a big keynote address on what apple is going to unavailable. what can we connect? tim cook from what we hear, expected to issue updates to iso operating system. the wall street journal reports that developers will get an early version of the software and it will roll out to consumers in the coming months. the operating system will make it easier for iphone users to share pictures and videos as well as other improvements. there's also possibly changes to the osx system. in terms of hardware we're hearing there may be a new mac book pro which is said to be thinner and faster. they say it's true. a lot of developers out here also speculating on a new desktop but honestly, we don't know until the keynote address scheduled for 10:00 this morning. still we spoke to several developers here this morning.

they are angst usually awaiting to hear what happenle is going to unveil. >> i think they are going to open up some of their other devices like their ipods, their smaller ipods. that's what i think. >> reporter: finally, we're also hearing that apple may unveil a new music streaming service. perhaps similar to that of pandora according to experts. this is a big day for apple. many people talking about how android phones have caught up to the popular iphone. apple's stock dropped about 37% since last sem. they are awaiting big news from tim cook. doors open at 5:00 after 7:00. a lot of people inside waiting for the keynote address. a lot of people are not anticipating a big unveiling of a iphone, or apple but we'll see. apple tends to surprise people at times. a lot of people say the apple online store went up about three hours ago.

temporarily moved during the cleanup. damage is estimated to $250,000. 8:47. we just got some new information about the deadly shooting early yesterday outside of the peacock lounge in sunnyvale. 20 minutes ago, police confirmed the fern killed was a security -- person killed was a security guard for the lounge. a second person was shot outside of the lounge. he was questioned by police and released with minor injuries. police are now going through the surveillance video from nearby cameras. this, by the way, was sunnyvale's first homicide of the year. east palo alto's police chief declared a crime scene emergency three weeks ago about the crimes. more patrol officers are patrolling. but the chief says the department is focused on prevention programs to help

reduce crime. social media is being blamed for a santa cruz county house party that ended with a house being trashed and four people in police custody. santa cruz county sheriff's deputies say a 16-year-old girl had invited some friends over to watch a movie. someone sent about the get-together and posted iten to facebook. sheriff -- posted it on facebook. sheriff's deputies say about 300 people showed up and neighbors began to block the home to keep kids out. four people were arrested at a traffic shop when sheriff's deputies found jewelry from the home in their car. an incredible store from san pablo where good samaritans rushed to the rescue after a rollover crash on westbound 80. a viewer sent us this video from the scene last night. it shows a group of people actually flipping the overturned suv and then rescuing the people inside. highway patrol officers say no one suffered major injuries. the cause of the crash is under investigation. 8:49. well, college finals resume at

santa monica college in southern california just one day after a fifth shooting was pronounced dead. now, 23-year-old john zawahri is the man police say shot his father and brother before going to the college and opening fire on students. yesterday, 26-year-old marcello franco died from her wounds at a hospital. she was riding in a car with her mother when zawahri shot both of them. her father also died in the attack. >> my husband was a very wonderful husband. she was my husband's little girl. >> three other people died in that shooting rampage. the suspect himself was shot and killed by police. now, there's a vigil planned for today at santa monica college. police officers and counselors will be on that campus. back here at home, the man accused of killing seven people at oakland's oikos university is due back in court this afternoon.

a judge will get a progress report on the mental competency of one goh. back in january, a judge ruled he's not competent to stand trial for last year's campus massacre. right now he's being held in a mental hospital. the judge suspended all legal proceedings against him. ten minutes before 9:00, palo alto homeowners who want to rent out some space can't expect to get a tax bill from city hall. many are using -- can expect a tax bill from city hall. many are using their rentals to rent out to travelers. the tax code says anyone who provides hotel services must pay hotel taxes. that means a 12% tax for every transaction. a final debate is scheduled tonight for san jose's city budget and the public is invited to attend. mayor chuck reed is asking for $16.4 million to restore police
