ktvu's chief meteorologist bill martin. >> there were lightning strikes but the north bay is where it was going on. i talked to folks and around midnight, 2:00 a.m. in the morning it started to go off. a lot of lightning. look at all the lightning strikes. that is the north bay. some rain fell out. some areas a quarter of an inch but most was dry lightning. here is discovery bay. some of the lightning strikes we saw. 2:00 a.m. in the morning, at its heaviest. last thing you need is dry lightning. we had a big dose of it last night. the system is moving off this way and that is taking the instability and the dangerous lightning with it. a break now. cloudy now. we are going going to start warming up. when i come back i will give you the details. >> thousands of dry lightning

strikes sparked several small fires. ktvu's ken pritchett is live where the weather could end up helping firefighters in the future. ken? >> reporter: of course, we are well into fire season right now but today it didn't feel that way. it is cool. we had drizzle today and as you could see it remains cloudy and the weather conditions helped firefighters put out some of the lightning sparked fires and the weather conditions may help homeowners who aren't ready for fire season. >> this kept firefighters around northern california busy. 6,000 lightning strikes hit in 24 hours. she says it was quite a show. >> because of the clouds it would just light up the whole sky and the valley. looked like day light for a few seconds. yeah. impressive.

beautiful. >> lightning sparked 50 wildfires. this tree off highway 128 was split in half. she says 20 wildfires were touched off by lightning strikes strikes. >> they are small, i think the largeicist 2 acres -- largest is 2 acres. >> they watched for fires in the sonoma county area. the weather that touched off the wildfires delivered clouds and provided homeowners a safer opportunity to clear brush. >> when the temperatures are lower and humidity is higher, this is a great time to make sure you create that 100-foot of clearance. >> reporter: cal fire says there may be more fires out there now with the smoke columns obscured by the heavy

cloud cover. once the cloud cover clears the firefighters may have more work to do. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we posted a slide show with the dry lightning strikes on our website, visit www.ktvu.com. san francisco police say more than 700 marijuana plants were discovered at home where a fire broke out this morning. they responded to reports of smoke at a home at 12:30 a.m. this morning. police say glow lights used to grow marijuana plants triggered an electrical over load. no one was home at the time of the fire and no one has been arrested. the high school teacher facing child pornography charges was in court today. he incurred a not guilty plea. police say he showed students a

nude photo of himself. a search of his computer turned up hundreds of child pornography stories. the man accused of speeding in a crash that killed his wife and son appeared in court today. cameras were not allowed inside but he broke down as the judge read the charges against him. police say the family was going to a water park when he lost control and hit a tree. witnesses estimate he was driving between 80-100 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour zone. authorities have identified a 58-year-old bicyclist who was hit and killed by a teen driver yesterday. authorities say she was knocked off her bike and died at the scene. she and her husband were riding their bikes. the husband suffered minor injuries. the driver is cooperating, no

license plates. one is at this school. police say last year a camera captured a car that was involved in a homicide. >> they cruised the area till they found the car, made the arrest. that is one of the crimes where we may or may not have solved the crime. >> the cities in red are using surveillance cameras. fairfield, pittsburg and richmond. they have reader cameras that tracks every car driven in or out of the city. >> all we see is the car from behind and the license plate. we don't have any other information than that photograph. >> reporter: officers connected their cameras to shot spotters, all cameras are targeted to

that area. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. the police chief canceled a crack down. the chief launched the crack down three weeks ago after a violent period. during the crack down the department added patrols. the chief says there was only one shooting that was believed to be self inflicted. he is speaking out since the fbi raided his office a week ago. last tuesday fbiagys removed boxes from the offices but wouldn't say why they were investigating. today he said the past week has been stressful but he plans to keep working. >> my intention at this point is to do my job that i was elected to do. attend my hearings. get my bills passed to the committee and to the floor and do the work of the state.

>> authorities contacted several state lawmakers about him and his activity. at least one has also been subpoenaed to testify. sources say governor jerry brown and lawmakers reached a budget deal on two of the main sticking points. debtal care for poor adults, more money for mental health services and a reduction in university tuition for middle class families. governor jerry brown has till the end of the month to sign it into law. vice president joe biden will visit san francisco later this week to raise cash. he is scheduled to appear at a fundraising breakfast on friday. it had originally been scheduled for next monday but the date was changed. tickets start at $500.

five bay area residents joined the red cross volunteers to provide tornado relief. they have been on hand to help with food, shelter, health services and emotional support. a new bill would place california's charter schools under the same laws as the state's traditional public schools. charter schools should be accountable to the same standards because they too are funded with taxpayer money. he says they are too often found to have misappropriated funds a. the bill comes as the american indian charter schools faces an uncertain future because of financial mismanagement. a new los angeles poll finds 59% of voters support the idea of offering more online classes at california
