"mornings on 2" starts right now. well, good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday, june 11th. let's get a quick look at weather and traffic. steve? >> yeah, we have a lot of low clouds around. some breaks already in the clouds. the higher clouds look like they will thin out, mainly for the morning hours and then look for machines, 60s, 70s and 80s. here's sal. this morning we're looking at san francisco and the traffic on the freeway looks good. let's go back to the desk. we have an update on developing news from san francisco we've been covering since 4:30. a family is looking for a new place to stay following an early-morning fire. their home is one of two

damaged on hudson avenue. ktvu's alex savidge joins us live from the scene to explain why firefighters say this fire may be suspicious. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, tori. what raises a red flag is the fact this early-morning fire broke out in a home that was vacant at the time. that's this place here on the left. that's where the fire started this morning. it went from the home, it burned through a carport that's attached to the home. it also burned a garage here that's on this vacant lot. and then it spread and jumped over to this house next door where a family was sleeping inside. i want to show you a cell phone picture given to us by a neighbor who woke up and saw a huge fireball down the street from her. this fire started at 2:30 this morning. we're on the 1500 block of hudson avenue. i'm told there are at least eight people from the same family forced from their home when it caught fire. none of them were hurt. they are certainly grateful they were able to escape. a little while ago, i talked

with one woman whose granddaughter woke her up. this fire quickly spread to the home. >> get up and get out. i just grabbed mohurs and walked out. that's all i know -- my purse and walked out. that's all i know. >> reporter: more than 70 firefighters had to be called out to contain the fire. the first crews on the scene quickly called for more engines to come in because the fire was so large. there was one firefighter hurt here this morning. he's being treated for a minor leg injury at the hospital after putting his foot through a deck. as we come back out here live, the two homes, both damaged, one of them vacant. the other one has heavy damage and that family will have to find another place to live. live in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:03. in just a couple of hours, the santa clara county district attorney is expected to announce a major crackdown on gangs. ktvu's brian flores joining us live now. you have more details.

brian? >> reporter: good morning, dave. this is the santa clara -- one of santa clara's largest gang cases. we are learning more details -- we'll learn more details at the press conference at 10:30. but the district attorney is expected to announce that 48 alleged members of a gang will be indicted on 77 charges. those charges range from selling meth, murder, robbery and various weapons charges as well. a lot of this hit a boiling point and concluded about last month. 39 are men, nine are women. out of the group eight, may face life sentence esbecause of california's three strikes now -- sentences because of california's three strikes now. we want to go back to oakland and charles street. this is where a 38-year-old man was shot and killed as he was just sitting in his chevy. this was the first of eight homicides during a deadly week last year. in that case, four members of the gang, their names listed on the screen were arrested back in april. on monday, police arrested a

fourth suspect in the shooting, 21-year-old ruben cruz. he was arrested near reno. his arraignment is scheduled for thursday. 77 charges on 48 people is quite a bit which has led to some speculation that the county may be seeking some type of deal with these people. we'll find out more during the press conference at 10:30 the district attorney's office will not be commenting before then. we're live here in san jose, brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, brian. san jose mayor chuck reed is expecting the city council to pass his proposed budget this afternoon. mayor reed says his main focus is the recent spike in crime. he's proposing pay raises and bonus offices for veteran officers who stay with the department. he wants to bring in the maximum 60 recruits for each police academy. >> public safety is the number one priority of our community. not the only one but the highest one. we're spending the bulk of the

additional spending on public safety. >> last night the public final hearing on the city budget was held. mayor reed says most agree with him about the need for more police officers on the street. oakland city council is studying a plan that could fund pay increases for city workers. right now there's $3 million set aside in a rainy-day fund. a current policy says that extra money needs to go to pay down deficits. the council is g for a special meeting to discuss changing the policy and using the money for raises instead. it would be the first raise for city workers in oakland since 2007. 7:06. we're following breaking news at the atlanta international airport. the power has been knocked out because of an explosion this morning. as you can imagine, it's a major headache for travelers. this is one of the busiest airport hubs in american. we're watching the pictures. police the explosion happened inside of a maintenance shed.

off. 7:10. police in oakland investigating the discovery of a body found near the 980 freeway. police rushed to 23rd street and martin luther king, junior way yesterday evening. they made that discovery. they saw the body behind a fence just yards away from the t. tracks. it's believed the victim was homeless and lived underneath that freeway. police say so far, there are no signs of foul play. 7:11. warning an important one, for s university after a disturbing incident while a female student studied alone in a campus classroom. the company that owned the limo that recently caught fire at a retirement community has gotten into trouble with the state twice in the past two years. some low clouds out there. a few high clouds. we're looking for mostly sunny weather today. a little drizzle by the coast. overall, temperatures where they should be. 60s, 70s and 80s. developing news from afghanistan -- more than a dozen people were killed today in a suicide bomb attack right outside the afghan supreme court. police say the bomber was targeting court employees leaving work in buses. all of this happened about 100 yards from the american embassy. we don't know yet if any americans were hurt. now we continue our coverage of that weak limousine fire in -- weekend limousine fire. luckily, no one was hurt. this 2008 lincoln town car they were riding in is supposed to carry only eight passengers. police say there were ten women in the limo.

the owner of the limb co company is blaming an electrical car -- limo company is blaming an electrical problem. the limo company has been suspended twice, once for not having workers' compensation insurance on file and again for not having liability insurance on file. this fire comes a month after five women were killed in a limo fire on the san mateo bridge. now a state lawmaker from the bay area is,ing for stronger safety rules -- is pushing for stronger safety rules for limousines doing business in california. ellen corbett of san leandro introduced a bill requiring that all limos have at least two exit doors and two windows that can be pushed out from the inside. president obama is scheduled to speak in about five minutes on immigration reform. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, the president wants congress to

move quickly on this bill. kyla? >> reporter: president obama says nobody is going to get everything they want, not republicans, not democrats. the president says the gang of 8 proposal is a compromise. we're taking a live look at the east room, where the president will be speaking in just moments. the senate is taking a procedural vote this afternoon on whether to move forward. at the core is the 13-year path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people who are in the u.s. illegally. it hey lous undocumented immigrants to apply for a green card after ten years and then apply for citizenship three years later. many republicans are already talking about offering amendments to the plan. some want more answers about back taxes and healthcare costs, other want the border more secure before this process moves forward. leaders from both parties in the house and senate say they

operating that heavy machinery. now a lawyer for the contractor hired to tear down the building says he did not tell the operator to use machinery the day of the building collapse. five people are believed to be trapped in a collapsed building in india. the four-story building in mumbai collapsed during a monsoon last night. five people were killed, six others have been hurt. rescue workers are using sensors and flight detectorrers, using their bare hands looking for possible survivors. the cause of the collapse, still not known but some say the demand for housing there is so high, contractors will often cut kosher. happening now, a -- corners. happening now, a second day of jury trial is getting underway in george zimmerman's trial on murder trials in sanford, florida. attorneys are expected to ask jurors about their knowledge of the case and whether they can keep an open mind about what

they've heard. the neighborhood watch volunteer says he killed 17- year-old trayvon martin in an act of self-defense after being attacked by the teenager. zimmerman could face life in prison if convicted. investigators say a stiletto high heel was used as a murder weapon in a bizarre homicide case in houston. police say ann trujillo used the high heel to kill her boyfriend inside the couple's high-rise condo early sunday morning. the victim, alf anderson, was a professor at the university of houston. the woman told police she grabbed the high heel and stabbed him several times in an act of self-defense. she says anderson exploded in a violent rage and gee gan to attack -- began to attack her. a doctor in san carlos has entered a not guilty plea to charge esset two fires to his business. it's reported that the doctor entered that plea to felony

charges of arson and vandalism. prosecutors say he set the fires in december because he was going through a divorce and suffered from mental illness. a judge granted that doctor bail on the condition he remains in a psychiatric treatment facility. the death of a woman in hayward is being called suspicious. the family is looking r for answers. the body of -- is looking for answers. the body of the. woman was found by a hiker in west marin last thursday. it was about 15 feet down a hillside off sir francis drake boulevard. an autopsy has been completed. sheriff deputies say there are visible injuries on her body. >> she was from heyrd what -- hayward. don't know why she would be in marin, so far in marin. anyone with any information, just something. >> the investigation into her death is open. puties are waiting for toxicology reports to come in

university police say a man approached a woman around 10:00 last night studying in a room on the second floor of duncan hall. he made small talk and asked her out on a date. police say the man pulled down his pants and exposed himself. the student grabbed her phone to call police and the man took off toward the elevator. he's describe as 20, 25, between 5'6", 5'7", 160 to 170 pounds. he's unshaven and last was seen wearing a sharks' hat, white t- shirt and jeans. the aloomny was outrage -- the alumni i spoke to was outraged. they said people need to feel safe around here. it's a learning environment. police say the blue phone is

important. the woman's phone did not work. if you have you can use one of those university phones to call police. katie utehs, ktvu channel 2 news. a driver accused of killing his wife and 3-year-old son in a fremont cash crash could enter a plea. gilbert gill is charge. he -- it charged and was going 65 miles an hour in a 35-mile- an-hour zone when he lost control last tuesday and hit a tree. witnesses say he was also arguing with his wife before the crash. >> i heard just yelling and -- and, you know, to the point where i couldn't understand what they were yelling about. but i heard yelling and yelling and that's when the car lost control. >> gill has previously been convicted of three felonies in santa clara county including possessing a controlled substance, commercial burglary and injury on a spouse.

a suspected serial bank robber is now behind bars in the martinez jail. investigators say 42-year-old james paige of pittsburg has robbed eight bay area banks since march. the fbi called him the button- down bandit because he wore long-sleeved collared shirts. his arrest came after a police officer recognized him. if you bought tickets to the america's yacht cup races in san francisco, you may be getting a refund. organizers announced you can get your money back for tickets to races between july 5th through august 5th. that's because the swedish team says they will be joining the race late. the team needs more time to prepare their new boat. their first catamaran was destroyed in a deadly accident on may the 9th. word from sacramento, that governor jerry brown and democratic lawmakers are very close to finalizing a budget teal ahead of this saturday's deadline. the governor has been urging a

increase. the labor talks involve engineers, train operators and station agents. b.a.r.t. says it wants to make the workers -- wants the workers to make more corruptions to help pension bent fits. it needs money to improve the system but workers say b.a.r.t.'s pooanas put it in the situation it's in. >> it's a fake budget. the budgets they've given are not reflective of what's going on and the bottom line is this -- we agree with b.a.r.t. we absolutely do. they do need to make improvements. they need to fix the trains. they are 40 years old. we're absolutely in agreement. where we disagree is where you are getting the money from. >> we're trying to make sure that b.a.r.t. has enough money for next ten years to buy new trains. we want to buy a new train droll system. we're trying to find the system between investing in our employees and at the end of the day, we're trying to strike that perfect balance. >> reporter: b.a.r.t.

says worker absences average 40 day as year per worker. that's just for sick and medical leave. not for vacation. but workers say what b.a.r.t. is not telling you, that's maternity leave, medical leave and jury duty. a lot coming from both sides of the hour. the contract negotiations obviously ongoing. we'll be speaking with b.a.r.t. in person coming up. live from oakland, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a woman was seriously hurt in san francisco after she was hit by a bicyclist riding on the sidewalk. it happened on market near stockton street yesterday afternoon. police tell the chronicle, the woman in her 60s fell and hit her head. she's in the hospital with life- threatening injuries. the 21-year-old bicyclist was cited but more charges are being considered. a civil grand jury report says san francisco needs to do more to prevent bicyclists' deaths. according to the examiner, the report recommends that the city set a goal of zero fatalities.

it also urges more bike safety training workshops as well as incentive r for those who attend them -- incentives for those who attend them and for more police training to help enforce bike laws. sal just told us about a crash on the way to the san mateo bridge? >> that's right. westbound 92 just after the exit bereis a motorcycle accident. westbound 92. want to put it on the maps for you. emergency crews are on the way. you will see the fire department from hayward along with chp arriving on scene. at least one lane is reported blocked there. you might want to think about an alternate route like the dumbarton bridge. now we're looking at the south bay. northbound 101 slow traffic north of yerba buena all the way up to the trimble road exit. 85 we've had a couple of different things. 280 is a pretty good bet right now into the west valley. let's move to live pictures.

they hear otherwise. again, breaking news from princeton, the campus is being evacuated because of a bomb threat to multiple, unspecified buildings. we'll bring you more updates as the story develops. we have an update on this morning's explosion at the atlanta international airport. pam cook is in the newsroom to tell us how this is affecting airports around the country. pam? >> yes. we understand the passengers have been allowed to return to the concourse that was evacuated in atlanta. but that's after about an hour of uncertainty. now, an entire concourse had to be evacuated after an explosion and a power outage at the hartsfield-jackson airport in atlanta. investigators say it appears to be some sort of electrical problem that caused that explosion. it did knock out power to that entire concourse. atlanta is a major hub so we're hearing of reports of delays because of this. now, this is a photo from our sister station in atlanta, wsb,

morning fire. their home was one of two damaged by fire on hudson avenue just hours ago this morning. ktvu's alex savidge has been there all morning. he's back now. you are saying the family is just grateful everyone got out safely. alec? >> reporter: ey are thankful they got out safely. firefighter investigators are still trying to piece together the cause of this early-morning fire. but the battalion chief says it's possibly suspicious because of the fact that the home that caught fire this morning was vacant at the time. that's this place on the left. the flames spread from this vacant home to a carport right outside, then to a garage, that sits on this lot and then eventual this fire spread to the house next door where a family was inside sleeping at the time. all of them, though, managed to get out. i want to show you a cell phone picture given to me by a neighbor that shows a giant fireball. flames shooting up into the air. this fire started about 2:30 this morning on the 1500 block

of hudson avenue. there was one firefighter would was hurt out here. he was treated for a minor leg injury after putting his foot through a deck. eight people from the same family were forced from the -- were forced from the form after it caught fire. a woman told me she raced outside and told me she saw this enormous fire. >> fire everywhere, just blowing. the heat was intense. we were just trying to get out of the way. grateful for that. >> reporter: the crews called for more engines when they got out here. eventually 70 plus firefighters were called out to try to contain the fire. the crews -- the crews could not tell what was burning. so they used images to find out

point for three years in san jose starting in 2010 and concluded just about last month. 39 of the alleged members are men, nine are women. out of the group, it's being reported that eight may face life sentences because of the three strikes law. we want to go to video of a scene back in august of the last year. some may recall this is where 38-year-old martin chacon was shot and killed as he was just sitting inside his chevy impala. this was the first of eight homicides during a very deadly week that year. in that case, four members of a gang were arrested in connection to the shooting back in april. but just on monday, police also arrested a fourth suspect in the shooting. that's 21-year-old ruben cruz. he was arrested in reno, nevada. his arraignment is scheduled for thursday. authorities say a lot of the violence occurred when vet

jumping off a moving muni bus. it's a growing problem in san francisco that authorities say puts passengers at risk. muni says it's happened at least 15 times in the past 12 days. passengers forced open the back doors of moving buses and jumped out. each time it happens, the bus has to be pulled from service so the doors can be checked. police say they are looking through surveillance video so they can identify the bus jumpers. >> i don't think anybody should be able to do it. like i say, it's easy enough to push a door open. but anybody want to -- why would anybody want to jump out while it's moving? >> they want to install new motors on the doors to keep them from being pried open. until then, lower plain clothes

there's a lot of gray out there. usually by noon, 1:00, we get some pockets of sunshine. the low clouds are making a good push there inland. in fact, i mean, napa and concord, fairfield far enough say sunny to mostly sunny. but almost everyone else says cloudy. 50s on the temperatures or low 60s. mountain view is in there. the lows were held up today. honely a few locations got in the low 50s. fairfield, westerly, southwesterly, concord is in there, santa rosa, napa, oakland. you get the idea it's an onshore breeze. there's plenty of fray to go around. 60s for many. upper 50s, reno, tahoe, sacramento annedidaeia -- ukiah all really close. so is fresno. that's not something you see in june. clouds and sun, morning fog, mild and then high clouds mainly to the south. but it's that low cloud deck. so 60s, 70s and 80s. petaluma, 76. kent field in there.

only one shooting in the past three weeks. it was most likely self- inflicted. east palo alto police made more than two dozen arrests during the crackdown. san mateo is taking its town hall virtual, this is new video of a website designed to get people more engaged in what's happening around the city. it allows people to share theired ideas and interact with people online. it will not replace traditional meetings but it meant to give people another outlook. the website was first created to get input on playground renovations. today we may get more details about plans for a new san francisco arena for the warriors. warriors' president inspected to give an update to the chamber of commerce this afternoon. just last month, a state assembly cleared a procedural step in the warriors' plan to build a waterfront arena. the warriors' openers hope to have that 18,000-seat arena built in time for the 2017 season. the waterfront development project in oakland is moving

ahead. the port announced it's reached and april treatment to sell the brooklyn basin site along the oakland estuary just south of jack london square. developers are ing to build 3,000 homes and condos, commercial space as well as parks. they are hoping to break ground earlier next year. the bay area leads the country in the percent of homes that receive multiple offers. nationally, 70% of homes that received offers in may had multiple bids. that's a 4% decline from april. but san francisco remains the most competitive market in the country. 88% of buyers had to face-off against other bidders for property. multiple offers may be one reason that many americans think now is a good time to sell a home. a survey shows 40% of those asked think it's better to sell now. that's up from 30% in april. that could mean more homes coming on the market and could

slow the pace of rising home prices. breaking news this coming in right now from vallejo. one person has been shot. ktvu's tara moriarty just arrived at the scene. you got there a couple of minutes ago. so what are the police saying, tara? >> reporter: well, we understand the victim is fighting for his life. he's been transported to a hole trauma center. we're at magazine and grant street. there are bullet casings on the ground. i've counted at least seven of -- at arrest seven of them -- at least seven of them. detectives are going through the scene. i understand that officers actually heard shots in this case? >> yes. we had two of our officers in the area. about a quarter mile away on an unrelated cal to for service when they heard the gunshots being fired. what happened? one of them responded. they saw the suspects driving away. >> as the officers were trying to assess where the calls came from, we got a call indicating

there was a gunshot victim down in the area of grant and mag stein. >> reporter: when they saw -- magazine. >> reporter: when they saw the suspect plea, it was a black car, possibly a nissan? >> yes, another officer responding to the scene, observed a vehicle, possibly a small nissan traveling southbound on 5th street at a high rate of speed. the officer made a u-turn, tried to catch up to the vehicle. at e point was traveling 90 miles an hour through surface streets and going through lights and stop signs. and then the officer lost site of him. >> reporter: thank you. he would understand the victim is in his early 30s. he's in critical condition. we do know that as far as a suspect description. the officer who was chasing after the suspect describes him as a black male in his 30s, last seen driving southbound on fifth street near lemon. we'll stay here on the scene and keep you posted. but again, that victim fighting for his life as he was struck multiple times by bullets.

of the new stadium site. this happened just about two hours ago. we do have ktvu's katie utehs there. she's gathering all of the information. katie will give us an update on this in just a few minutes. new this morning, firefighters in berkeley you -- berkeley now have gained control of a fire that happened at an historic hotel this morning. this happened about 7:00 this morning at the nash hotel on university avenue. that hotel was built in 1924. in san francisco, two houses were damaged by this big fire in the bayview district early this morning. the family of 6 had to run for their lives this morning. luckily, they are okay. ktvu's alex savidge is out there. you've been out there since 4:30 this morning. there's in you cell phone video you want to show us, alex. >> reporter: it's pretty dramatic. we'll show you that in a minute. this was a large fire. it did quite a bit of damage.

it broke out in this vacant home. broke through a garage and a carport and caught this second house on fire. [ sirens ] >> reporter: this is cell phone video given to me by a neighbor that shows flames shooting up in the air shortly after this fire started. it broke out about 2:30 this morning here on the 1500 block of hudson avenue in san francisco's payview district. there was firefighter who was hurt out here. he was treated at the hospital this morning for minor leg injuries after putting his foot through a deck. battling these flames. that second home that caught fire had eight people from the same family inside sleeping at the time. they all were able to wake up and they all made it out okay. they were definitely shaken up. >> i've seen lights. i seen the cable fall. and then i felt heat. my grand ma said the house is

on fire -- my grandma said the house is on fire. we gotta go. >> reporter: the crews who arrived here could not tell what was burning. so the crews used images to see what was on the vacant lot and they found out there was a garage and a car port here. arson investigators came out here early this they took photos and gathered evidence and they are trying to pinpoint an exact cause for this fire. a battalion chief told me that this fire is possibly suspicious in his words. most had i because of the fact that it broke -- mostly laws of the fact it broke out inside a home that was vacant. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. it's 8:48. new this morning, a driver is in serious condition after crashing their car while racing. this happened in pleasant hill on gregory lane about 1:40 this morning -- 12:040 this morning -- 12:40 this morning. both cars collided. the ford focus flipped over and

landed in a parking lot. a passenger in the focus suffered minor injuries. no one in the honda was hurt. police say they arrested the 18- year-old driver of the honda who they identify as paula laseroff. a scary incident on campus at san jose state university. ktvu's pam cook is in our newsroom with what happened and who police are looking for. good morning, pam. >> reporter: good morning. well, last night at about 9:30, a student at san jose state says she was accosted by a young man. now, she was studying alone in a classroom in duncan hall on campus when she says a man came in and sat down next to her. she said the man tried to talk with her and ask her out on a date and then exposed himself. when she threatened to call police, he too -- he took off. >> i think it's outrageous. i think students should be on campus and enjoy learning and not have to worry about people flashing them. >> they always say that san jose is like the safest big city, right? so it's -- it's -- from my

experience, everyone is always cordial. >> reporter: there's spotty cell phone service, unfortunately, inside buildings. so that victim had a hard time getting the call out. but university police say there are also blue emergency phones around campus as well. now that suspect was last scene on the second floor toward the elevator lobby of duncan hall. he's described as latino, 20, 25, 5'6" to 5'7". 150 to 160 pounds and unshaven. at the time of the incident last night he was wearing a teal sharks' hat, bagby white shirt and -- baggy white shirt and blue jeez. if you have any information that could be helpful, call san jose state university police. pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, pam. ten minutes before 9:00, new information now on the explosion and power outage at

atlanta's main airport. it happened just this morning. airport officials say that power is now back on and all passengers have been let back into the evacuated terminal. the police say the explosion happened in a maintenance shed at hartsfield-jackson airport just before 9:00 a.m. local time. knocked out power to an entire concourse. that's one of the busiest airports in the country. here's a photo from our sister station in atlanta, wsb. it shows concourse d when it was being evacuated. no injuries have been reported so far. meanwhile, we just talked with officials at sfo, and they say the outage is not affecting flights between the prayer and atlanta. a flight from los angeles to texas had to make an unexpected stop after a bomb threat was called in while the plane was mid-flight. the southwest flight with 143 passengers on board was diverted to phoenix, arizona. military planes were called out to monty ner the -- monitor the flight as it made its way to

the airport. after searching the plane, the fbi says no explosives were found. 8:51. time is running out for san francisco activists trying to save the oldest african- american-owned bookstore in america. it is marcus books. it's been in business on fillmore street since 1960. the openers have now one week to work out a deal with theland lord or place possible evacuation. a nonprofit group has offered to buy the building and then return it to the bookstore. it's not clear if the owner of the building will accept that deal. >> i really appeal to the family that's purchased this property. we have made an offer to try to negotiate with them. they have asked that they be compensated with a benefit of $1.6 million. >> thousands of well-known prominent writers have visited marcus books including tony morrison. the state of california
