detector or the probes that can find the tiniest of imperfections. >> as you run the probe down the weld very slowly, you're looking for something to peak above that green line. and when it does, then you know that you have something to look at, which may or may not be significant. >> reporter: nonetheless, each and every imperfection is mapped for additional inspection and investigation. the bridge building code says small imperfections do not need repairing. >> the code gives you a threshold. it gives you a limitation of what is acceptable and what is rejectible. >> so not even the code expects total perfection? >> correct. >> reporter: the weld can be prepared after the defect is melded, chipped or ground out. >> it depends on location, orientation of what you're looking at. what we think we're looking at. >> reporter: and here on the base, whether you look inside or out, you see massive bolts, many of which have been here for a half decade.

bart at this hour. problems from a fire this morning on the tracks between balboa park and daily city stations have slowed the trains. we just spoke with bart about 20 minutes ago and they said that trains heading to the peninsula are delayed by about 20 minutes. minor delays in san francisco. crews are working to fix the remaining damage on the tracks. bart has not given an estimate as to when full service will be restored. >> a convicted child molester from georgia who had been on the run for four years has been arrested in san francisco. marcus tillman was convicted of molesting his two young sons. he was found at a coffee house last night. u.s. marshalls say that someone called them after recognizing him from america's most wanted. he is awaiting extradition to georgia. an 8-month undercover sting targeting child predators has lead to the arrest of a man

from the north bay. he traveled to san jose to have sex with an 11-year-old girl. what have you learned from investigators, paul. >> reporter: that man is the second time that the task force has successfully concluded an investigation into an alleged child predator. shawn was arrested after an 8- month investigation conducted by the sheriff's office. that meeting was supposed to happen here at the intersection of san carlos and second street in san jose. online chats and other evidence they found proves that he had every intent to physically and sexually abusing a 11-year-old girl. he drove 80 miles for the meeting. when arrested, he admitted that he planned on sexually abusing the child.

>> we do these investigations daily. we're constantly looking for people involved in the sex trafficking trade and looking to sexually and physically harm children. >> reporter: now he is out on $100,000 bail. the task force arrested a man from denver who came to san jose for a meeting. that is in the hands of a federal government because he crossed state lines. >> a state attorney general investigation has led to the arrest of four alleged sex traffickers, including a bay area suspect. the three others arrested are from the sacramento area. attorney general harrison identified the fourth person arrested as 49-year-old lu of san mateo county. they are accused of taking women across the country to brothels, including one in a

residential area of san mateo county. >> the california legislation passed a budget. the budgetary stores 2.1 billion to k through 12 education, leaving a billion dollars senior plus and pays off debt. democrats hailed it as a newer afor the state. republicans criticized the budget as spend happy. governor brown is expected to sign the new budget before the fiscal year begins july 1st. >> work on the first leg of the state high speed rail system can begin this summer. it won approval yesterday. the board said the state can begin construction on 65 miles of track from merced to fresno as long as it keeps the current route. a lawsuit is pending in sacramento that could stop the rail authority from spending any more money. >> happening now, vice president joe biden is inside a home in san francisco's sea cliff neighborhood. he arrived about half an hour ago and was greeted by

protesters. he is in town for a fundraiser but money isn't what is on the protesters minds. david stevenson talked to the group about their message to the white house. david joins now. >> reporter: frank, the vice president arrived at 5:37 here in this neighborhood and he got a loud greeting from about five dozen protesters. take a look. these people are with orange such as green peace, the sierra club. they're all opposed to the proposed keystone pipeline. the vice president waved at them as he arrived for the fundraiser. protesters were pleased about that. but organizers say they are skeptical about the protester's message. >> biden is one of obama's closest aides and has power to encourage the president to doing the right thing. >> i think pressuring him on keystone is silly.

the bay area is always going to have protests. >> reporter: the fundraiser started at 5 and is held at the home of a beverage distributor ceo. it has a view of the golden gate bridge. tickets ranged from $500 to $10,000 and are expected to raise $700,000 for house and senate candidates. >> i would love to meet him and get my picture with him. just shake his hand and tell him that i'm a big fan of his work. >> reporter: and take a look, you can see the street is almost empty except for traffic officers and police officers. this protest broke up almost immediately after the vice president arrived. mr. biden is set to spend the night in san francisco with his wife, dr. jill biden, and return to washington tomorrow. reporting live in san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> vice president's trip to san

francisco comes a week after president obama was in the bay area. he attended fundraisers in the south bay and delivered a speech. >> a hearing will be held on monday for firearms dealers. the proposed amendment would require a permit process for the sale of firearms, ammunition or explosive devices. this comes after some people complained about a gun shop opening last year without a public hearing. but they did follow all laws and regulations in opening. >> they did all of the proper permits. i feel like there are rights to conduct business in town. and then, you know, i'm not a gun owner. i'm not interested in being a gun owner. i would never have a gun in my house. so i am a little conflicted about if i want to have the store in town. >> the store says the ordinance be could impact the store's

existence. in in out hamburger withdrew the application to build a new restaurant. some residents strongly objected to the plan because of parking and traffic. s of county jail inmates graduated today from a first of its kind school. two graduation ceremonies were held for 65 men and women, all of woman earned their high school diplomas or geds while behind bars. the work was done through the five keys charter school. it's the first in the nation public charter high school to operate out of a county jail. >> i would get up every morning and go to my classes. study hard. i'm just proud of myself that i finally got through. >> congratulations to her.

their respects to ray ramirez. he was killed on june 1st when his unit was hit by an explosive device. after the service, ramirez was buried at the veteran's national cemetery in dixon. >> close friends are hoping to keep caring for a daughter whose mother was killed in a bicycle accident yesterday. >> i want what is best for her. i hope we stay in her life. >> the mother died yesterday when she was crushed from a collision of two trucks. her daughter is just two years old. katie took in the two to help her get on her feet after a life spent mainly in foster homes. a man found dead has been identified. 70-year-old ronald rush had suffered head trauma a he was found inside of a home about 5:45 tuesday evening. there was a person seen driving away from the home when somebody called about the body. >> new at 6:00, a 99-cent store in the east bay could have a

it all started around 8:00 last night. a police officer tried to stop a car reported stolen. perez was driving and howard was the passenger. the officer chased the car from highway 237 to highway 85 before it crashed into another car. perez ran but was found at a motel. both men were booked on several charges. fire danger here in the bay area. firefighters were out training today as they do every day during fire season. the county was under a red flag warning earlier today. temperatures coming down a bit but today was the hottest day of the week. >> our meteorologist mark ibanez is here on what we can expect tonight and the weekend. >> that's right. we have a big warmup for today. the warmest spots are in the upper 80s and low 90s. a big drop-off in temperatures coming. you can see the range. san francisco was 74. look at all of the warm to hot
