good morning, welcome to mornings on 2. >> good morning, i'm brian flors, what does the weekend have in store for us. i know it's going to be cooler. how cool will it be? good morning to you. a drop in temperatures are coming our way. the clouds are hugging the coastline and for you here on the wall, numbers for yesterday and what i'm expecting for today, we're talking about 5 to 10 degrees of cooling by the afternoon. i'll have a look for what you can expect for your neighborhood and father's day forecast coming up. >> an employee is being held a -- hailed a hero. the incident began with an armed suspect trying to rob a popular fast food joint. we've news live at the

boulevard alex? >> reporter: good morning, this armed robber was shot to death by sheriff's deputies inside boulevard burger which is behind us. you can see right here he pushed into the front door, crime scene technicians are continuing to collect evidence. this shooting happened at 10:00 last night. it's coincidence that two sheriff's deputies were right outside the restaurant when this took place. they were involved in a traffic stop. a restaurant worker went outside and told the deputies it was being robbed. >> they saw he was wearing a glove, mask and handgun. >> the robber turned towards the deputies and that's when the employee grabbed the man's arm causing the gun to go off. and the sheriff's deputies opened fire killing the armed robber. >> they saw the deputies run

inside the restaurant. >> within seconds, there was multiple shops fired. >> what does he did? >> i dropped in my seat. i was paralyzed. >> reporter: there were several employees inside the restaurant at the time of the shooting. none of them though were hurt. investigators are still trying to figure out how robber got inside the restaurant which had already closed for the night. the man killed in the shooting has not yet been identified by investigators. we're live in castro valley alex savage k tv u channel 2 news. police are continuing to square off in san francisco over a highly coveted piece of open space [ cheering ] >> they had hoped to take back the area. but, police blocked off the area. two people were arrested. one on assault charges and the

good morning, the low clouds and fog, giving you a live look there over berkeley. low 50s outside your doors. >> we're learning about some of the private information and national security, you can see a pain about the high tech companies, facebook and microsoft are trying to reassure users by publicly disclosing what they gave over to the government. facebook said there were 19,000 were turned over to the government, the reasons ranged from finding a missing child and an assault to the nsa, microsoft says it received 6 to 7,000 criminal and national security warrants and

subpoenas. google plans to give statistics over what it was asked. >> firefighters got help as winds died down and rain came to the colorado springs area. the black forest fire is 30% but it has destroyed 473 homes and killed two people. the fire they say was likely caused by somebody. >> we have an active investigation for the cause of this fire. we're narrowing down what the point of origin. we're making progress on that. >> officials worry the fire could flare-up again if the weather changes. meantime the royal gorge fire 50 miles southwest is 40% contained and a large fire in rocky mountain national park is 30% contained. the u.s. army corps of engineers is joining the fight. it will be operated by soldiers. they'll use the bulldozers and

other heavy equipment to create fire breaks. a possible security threat on a denver bound flight. one passenger on the frontier airlines flight tweeted it was a bomb threat. the plane was taken to a remote location after it landed. the plane was coming in from knoxville tennessee. antioch officials say bomb threats that were phony has costed them thousands of dollars. according to the times, it includes expenses of staff salaries and extra time in resources to contact parents. a 16-year-old student is responsible for two of the pranks and is being expelled

and the third incident it is unknown who did that. this is the map showing the daytime burglaries in two different neighborhoods. the burglaries seem to be crimes of opportunity as well. they're posing as solicitors and targeting homes in the afternoon when typically no one is home. >> they're walking up to the front door, walking on the door and ricking the doorbell. >> it's very unsettling. >> it's a nice area, it's a high end area. police say behind cameras and alarms, the best way to keep burglars out of your house is to make it look like someone is home. leaving music on and having a house and leaving it a target. the crash injured the forklift operator and two people inside the car.

produce workers tell us that they believe the car was driving over 25 miles per hour speed limit. >> those things are hard to tip over and this thing waste 7,000 pounds and for someone to hit one of these things to tip it over, they have to be going very fast. >> they say they cut through that area to vetime. they've approved a three phase plan rerouting traffic so no commuters can access the market. all three people hurt in the accident are expected to survive. governor brown has until the end of the month to approve a law in the lens later. they passed a budget yesterday beating today's deadline. the governor is expected to sign the budget plan, it moves more money to pour school districts and restores funding

a witness describes a deadly police shooting in castro valley, why one of the employees is being called a hero. >> good morning, thank you it's saturday june 15th. >> good morning, i'm brian flores. investigators say a man tried to rob the boulevard burger restaurant on castro valley boulevard last night.

they were conducting a traffic stop when someone came up to them telling them there was a robbery in progress. they went to the restaurant and encountered the suspect who was wearing a mask and armed with .357 and they believe he tried to shoot them and the employee pushed his arm and police returned fire killing the suspect. >> we believe he was trying to stop the robber from shooting at our deputy. that is what we believe. >> kind of a hero. >> very much a hero. >> the employee who grabbed the suspect's arm suffered a minor powder burn from the gunfire. alex savage is at the scene, he'll have more on the investigation in the next half- hour. the head of the union says he has no confidence in the communication system. he's urged city council

in the water after a deck collapsed. other people went in to save them. >> this is a look at the damage from shucker's bar and grill. it happened thursday night when they were watching game 4 of the nba finals. two people were seriously injured. there is speculation that last month's earthquake may be to blame. the empty grocery store in the town of linda thought a bomb went off. but, it was a collapse and it may have weakened the building and led to the collapse. a 55-year-old man was killed and seven others injured at a chemical plant yesterday. a nitrogen pressure build up caused that blast. there was another explosion at another chemical plant only

miles away and that led to two deaths and dozens of injuries. they're rushing to today's deadline for claims for help. one son received 175 applications yesterday and volunteers expect more yesterday. donations poor into the fund that stands at $47 million. 200 were killed and more were injured. money will not be handed tout to the victims until next month. if you are planning to go to the san francisco marathon, you're told to arrive early. extra measures will be in place after the boston marathon bombings this year. the event starts at 5:30 this morning. it will be enclosed and completely secured by police. the full marathon is 26 miles and will take runners over the golden gate bring.

welcome back to mornings on 2. a new jersey teenager who suffered a heart attack behind his car is now being particularred. he was driving his jeep ranger -- jeep wrangler, a police officer gave landingly cpr saving his life. he received tickets for three moving violations. they are for rolling into another car after passing out. >> we have one policeman who saved his life while another one is looking to get some money out of this. >> langley wrote a note that got two of the tickets being dismissed and he's still being charged $133 while suffering his heart atang. an officers tried to talk a man down from a tower, into

this restaurant, she told me that three of her employees were inside this place late last night, just around closing when they were held at gun point by this sheriff's deputie interrupted this hold up though and eventually shot this gunman to death. this is an active crime scene. the coroner took this man's body from the scene. the shooting happened after 10:00. he was demanding money from the safe. the employees couldn't comply with those demands. it happened that two sheriff's deputies were right outside of this restaurant at the time of the robbery. they were involved in an unrelated traffic stop in the street. a restaurant worker told those deputies that the business was being robbed, the deputies were inside, and that's when they found one employee that was struggling from the armed robber. that's when one deputy opened fire in return killing an armed

alex? >> reporter: well, good morning. this armed robber was holding several employees at this restaurant at gunpoint last night, before sheriffs deputies shot and killed him. this morning, the owner of boulevardburg inner castro valley came up and put up this sign outside of what remains a crime scene. she said she is saddened by the deadly shooting last night and thankful her workers weren't hurt. only person hurt during all of this was the man who was shot and killed by deputies. this happened about 10:00 last night. investigators tell me the robber in all likelihood snuck in through the back door, right at the restaurant was closing but by pure coincidence, sheriffs deputies happened to be involved in an unrelated traffic stop right outside the restaurant at the same time the robbery was going on. a worker managed to flag down the two deputies. they went inside and they found one restaurant employee who was struggling with this masked gunman. a shot was fired from his gun and that's when one deputy in

turn opened fire. >> at that time, one of the victim employees tried to grab his arm of the robber. a shot was fired and deputies returned fire, hitting the suspect and killing the suspect. >> reporter: now, the armed robber was the only person shot during all of this. that h identified by authorities. but investigators do tell me they are looking into the possibility he may have been involved in other recent hold- ups here in the castro valley area. one investigator told me that those deputies really did show up right in the nick of time last night. if they had gotten here to this restaurant any later, it's possible that some of those employees could have been shot. now, the owner of boulevard burger did come here this morning, did put up this sign, thanking the officers for what they did last night. she also told me the restaurant, she is planning to reopen monday morning. live this morning in castro valley, alex savidge, ktvu

today's search begins at 9:30 a.m. volunteers can meet at the ocean beach parking lot at the great highway, across the street from the beach chalet restaurant. there is also growing concern about a missing southern california man last seen in mendocino county. 52-year-old eric lambert was reported missing may 29th. a few days later, his van was found stuck on the road near fort bragg, but there was no sign of him. lambert is described as 6' 5, 200 pounds. if you have any information on his whereabouts, please contact the mendocino county sheriff's department. police are issuing a burglary warning for homes in livermore. i want to show you a map showing the locations of eight daytime burglaries in two neighborhoods. they all happened this week. the burglaries seem to be crimes of opportunity. police say the burglars are targeting homes in the middle of the afternoon, when no one is home. >> lot of times, these burglars are strictly walking up to the front door, knocking on the door, ringing the doorbell. when nobody answers, that's when they go into the house. >> very unsettling. it's a pretty nice area, too,

. welcome back. a live look there at the low clouds and fog, hugging over parts of san francisco and the bay bridge. low 50s outside your doors. well, some evacuations have been lifted in the most destructive fire in colorado history. firefighters got some help as winds died down and rain came to the colorado springs area. the so-called black forest fire is now 30% contained. it has destroyed 473 homes and killed two people since it began on tuesday. the sheriff says the fire was likely caused by a person. >> we have an active investigation for the cause of

this fire. we're narrowing down what we believe the point of origin, so we are making progress on that. >> officials worry the fire could flare again if the weather changes. meantime, the royal gorge fire 50 miles southwest of the black forest fire is 40% contained. and a large fire in rocky mountain national park is now 30% contained. meantime, the u.s. army corps of engineers has joined the fire fight in colorado. trucks brought in bulldozers, which will be operated by soldiers from nearby fort carson. they will use the bulldozers and other heavy equipment to cut fire breaks. breaking news out of egypt, where officials say a plane from cairo to new york's jfk was forced to make an emergency landing. this comes after passengers discovered a letter threatening to blow up the plane. the flight with 300 passengers did land safely in glasgow a short time ago. the flight is now being looked at by bomb technicians. one person was taken into custody after a possible security threat on a denver- bound flight.

investigators have not released a lot of details on this, but one passenger on that frontier airline flight did tweet that it was a bomb threat. officials at denver airport say the frontier airlines plane was taken to a remote location after it landed and a bomb squad did respond. the plane was coming in from knoxville, tennessee. now, back here in the bay area, antioch school officials say a series of phony bomb threats has cost them an estimated $157,000. those threats were phoned in to deer valley high school, antioch high school, and black diamond middle school in april. according to the contra costa times, the extra expenses include teacher and staff salaries and extra time and resources to contact parents. a 16-year-old student is being expelled because of the two pranks. it's still unknown who is responsible for the third. we are learning about some of the private information the national security agency obtained from high tech companies about their users. facebook, google and microsoft are trying to reassure users right now by publicly disclosing what records they

turned over to the federal government. for example, facebook says the feds inquired about 18,000 accounts in the last half of 2012. requests ranged from a local sheriff trying to find a missing child, to the nsa trying to uncover a terrorist threat. governor brown has until the end of the month to sign a new state budget approved by the democratic-controlled legislature. by a party line vote, lawmakers passed the $96.3 billion budget yesterday, just beating today's deadline. the governor is expected to sign the spending plan, which lowers college tuition for many families, moves more money to poor school districts, and restores funding to social programs, severely cut in recent years. republicans, however, are warning there is too much spending in the budget. meantime, the fire at the chevron refinery in richmond last august was definitely on the minds of lawmakers when they approved the budget. they tell the contra costa times they have included new fees on oil refineries. the extra money would pay for at least 15 new inspectors at cal osha. so far, chevron has not yet commented. new york and san francisco

are teaming up for a major high tech summit this fall. san francisco mayor ed lee played host to new york city mayor michael bloomberg yesterday. the two leaders toured the san francisco headquarters of square, which is a company that makes credit card readers that attach to mobile devices. the summit is scheduled for september 30th in new york city. the san jose sharks plan to talk with the city about upgrading their arena. the team's coo told the san jose mercury news they don't plan to replace hp pavillion, but want to enhance the interior. the arena is 20 years old and the sixth oldest in the league. the lease between the city and the sharks expires in five years. hp pavillion is going to be renamed fap center next month, thanks to the new controlling owner, who founded the software. the debate over parking fees at beaches in sonoma county continues to heat up. on tuesday, state park officials will hold a public hearing about the installation of 15 self-pay machines at beaches along the coast. the meeting comes nine months

during a visit from president obama. council members will address the plan later this month. a case of road rage following a hit and run in oakland has left a driver injured. police say a vehicle collided with a car last night at 18th avenue and international boulevard. that's one of the vehicles involved right there. now, both drivers got into a fight. witnesses say one driver stomped on the other driver's head and then drove off. the victim was taken to the hospital. we do not know that person's condition. and check out this bus. there were students and a driver on the burning schoolbus, but they are fortunately all safe this morning. they were able to get off the mount diablo unified schoolbus after it caught fire near interstate 680. an overheated engine is being blamed. it is still unclear what will happen to a 2-year-old girl whose mother was killed on her way to work. 23-year-old shayla cipriano died while riding her bike to work on thursday. she was killed after getting caught under one of two trucks that crashed into each other.

finals. two people were seriously hurt. an abandoned building has collapsed in yuba county. there is speculation last month's earthquake may be to blame. the empty grocery store collapsed without warning on thursdni one person living nearby says it sounded like a bomb had gone off. authorities are now fencing off that area. local officials think a 5.7 quake back on may 23rd may have weakened the abandoned building and led to that collapse. people injured in the boston marathon bombings are rushing to meet today's deadline to file claims for help. the one boston fund has received about 175 applications by late yesterday. volunteers expect more today. donations continue to pour in for the fund, which now stands at more than $47 million. four people were killed and more than 260 injured in the bombings, which happened on april 15th. money won't be handed out to the victims until next month. well, if you're planning on going to the san francisco

marathon tomorrow, you're being told to arrive early. extra security measures will be in place following the boston marathon bombings earlier this year. police say runners should arrive about 30 to 45 minutes before the event, which begins at 5:30 tomorrow morning. now, the start and finish lines on the embarcadero between mission and harrison lete enclo by police. the full marathon, just over 26 miles, will take runners over the golden gate bridge. all bags will also be screened at the event. meantime, runners at this year's marathon will also be raising money to help victims of the boston marathon bombings. they have teamed up with the nonprofit group no barriers. the organization will provide athletes and spectators who suffered amputations with prosthetic limbs, so they can participate in sports once again. we're going to look at the homes in what our state's attorney general is calling a network of brothels across northern california. now, these homes were allegedly among four homes connected to a sex trafficking operation that moved women from new york and

activity this year. the 2012 sonoma grape harvest is going down as the largest ever recorded. $267,000 of wine grapes were harvested last year, valued at nearly $583 million. that is an increase of 41% from the year before. the sonoma county wine growers association says great weather and a long growing season helped deliver the record- breaking crop. an historic coca-cola bottling plant in sacramento is now closed. the plant, on stockton boulevard, has been independently owned for 87 years, but then coca-cola bought it this year. the company then decided the plant was big enough. although some of the plant's 60 workers were transferred to another plant in sacramento, most were let go. an east bay 99-cents only store wants to add booze to its list of bargains. the store is applying for a license to sell beer and wine. the alcoholic beverages would be priced from 99-cents up to

commencement tomorrow morning at stanford stadium. the event will be shown on the school's website. stanford says it chose bloomberg because he encourages students to think big and to encourage them in how to make a difference in the world. a new push to crack down on end of the school year dumping. many students at cal state east bay are leaving behind a large amount of garbage. a community room has been transformed into a drop-off site for items students no longer want. it's called free fest and it's run by students. >> educating yon minds, it's important to let them know that recycling, you should do that. >> organizers are also looking at dumpsters around campus for items that can be recycled. disadvantaged students can go to the community room and take whatever they want for free. what's left over is given to the st. vincent depaul charity. there may be more trouble on the horizon for the irs. the agency may now be in jeopardy of losing some of its

funding for the federal healthcare overhaul because of recent scandals. the irs was supposed to get a big budget boost next year to help implement the new law, but republicans are now trying to limit that funding, citing management problems. something as simple as a well-placed water machine is apparently helping kids make healthier choices at one oakland school. before this machine came to claremont middle school, students say they were choosing beverages with lots of sugar. researchers at ucsf learned students were not drinking a lot of water at school, in large part because most didn't have access to it. researchers say before this experiment, only 1 to 10% of students would get water from a water fountain. now those in charge of the lunch at fairmont say they are seeing more students drinking more water. sesame street is tackling a new issue that impacts children across the nation. >> my dad's in jail. >> jail? why? >> i don't like to talk about it. >> producers of the show have come up with a new tool on
