low to mid 50s. today temperatures will continue to cool. it will be a slight one for today with a bigger drop coming on tuesday. i will have your numbers for you. i will show you when we will transition to the warmer weather coming up. good morning, sal. good morning, rosemary. a passenger was killed after a driver crashed into several parked cars. it happened around 2:00 this morning. police say it appears the driver was speeding and alcohol may have been involved. the driver is being treated for nonlife threatening injuries and could face charges. we also have a different video of a driver possibly drunk driving after a crash in the east bay that injured four children. two of those victims were the driver's own stepchildren. the accident happened shortly after 10:00 last night on northbound 880. chp says the driver lost

control of his car. hit a pickup truck and veered off the freeway. two children were critically injured. two suffered minor injuries. it's 6:01 let's go back to the desk. we have a police sketch of a man accused of trying to kidnap a little girl in pacifica. alex savidge is there now and with us with more important information about the suspect. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, to you. this young girl was able to fight off this man who was trying to kidnap her yesterday. she managed to get away. she is physically unhurt but as you can imagine is likely shaken up. police want you to take a look at the sketch of the man they are trying to find. everything happened around 4:30 yesterday afternoon. near beach boulevard in santa rosa avenue. this man approached the ten- year-old girl, told her to come with him, and grabbed her arm. she in turn punched this man and managed to run off. the man also ran away and police trying to track him

down. he is described as white and likely in his 30s. we quantity tow to put in a call if you know any information. alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. in a couple hours from now a grim search resumes in the livermore area for a missing kayaker. the sister of missing man says the brother vanished after taking off his life jacket so he could swim to shore about 75 feet away. >> once he got into the water he tried to get the life jacket back and she witnessed him submerge into the water. >> the wind gets so bad that more times than not they get blown over. >> the divers from the sheriffs office searched those waters for several hours until the sun

went down. they will go back into the water later this morning for what is believed to be a recovery effort. >> the trial of joseph naso is expected to begin today in a marin county -- he is acting as his own attorney for his own trial. if convicted he could face the death penalty. the richmond high school gang rape case continues today and we are hearing the victim could take the stand. she was just 16 years old at the time of the attack in 2009. police say she was beaten, raped, and sexually abused after leaving the schools home coming dance. if convicted 22-year-old jose montano and peter could face life in prison. starting today a road in fremont will be closed for one year because of the new bart

construction project. it's on warren avenue. that road will be lowered three new bridges will be built above the road. the new construction will extend bart to the warren springs area and eventually on to san jose. california state lawmakers will consider limo safety bills from two bay area state senators. this is all in a response to the firey limo tragedy. that is where five nurses heading to a -- would require two doors and two emergency window exits in the back of all limos. there is a separate bill from democrat jerry hill of san mateo. that one will require that ever

sickness known as valley fever is bad enough to move thousands of prison inmates. the illness comes from an airborne fungus. hundreds more have been hospitalized. the judge will decide if three dozen inmates should be transferred. apple says it was askefor information about its users. thousands of times in the last seven months. a new report shows record numbers are deciding not to buy. also president obama and the g8 leaders are gathering in

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. we are learning about a serious accident involving two patrol cars. ktvu tara moriarty joins us now from the crash scene.

tara. >> reporter: a tow truck is taking one of those squad cars away. these are vehicles from the contra costa county sheriffs department. they are loading it on that flat bed there. this is because the two cars got stuck in ice plants after a high speed chase. it happened around 3:45 this morning. two contra costa county sheriffs deputies noticed a black lexus without plates. now the driver led them on a chase into berkeley and after 11 minutes of pursuit they ended up here on 80 westbound just past the university avenue exit. the lexus drove into the brush. so there is a little bit of a fire out here. unfortunately the lexus driver got away. right now traffic is sort of crawling 80 westbound. this is typical for this hour. i don't know if this particular

accident impacted traffic too much. if you pan over to the left you can see it just starts to pick up here past this accident. so we will continue to stay out here and let you know how traffic improves throughout the morning. live from berkeley i'm tara moriarty. in south africa nelson mandela's wife is thanking people from all over the world for the love and generosity shown. after mandela spent his tenth day in the hospital with a lung infection, the 94-year-old former president of south africa has struggled with lung problems for years. he spent 27 years in prison for protesting apartheid before becoming south africa's first black president in 1994. time now 6:14. more votes are expected this week on immigration reform. last week the senate voted to prevent a filibuster of the bill.

two of the senators from the group of eight are warning that if the gop blocks the measure, the party will have a difficult time trying to retake the white house in the is 2016 election. a group of nones traveling around the country to push for immigration reform will make a stop in the bay area today. the nuns marched in bakersfield yesterday. this afternoon the nuns have a meeting scheduled with silicon valley technology leaders. in 15 minutes from right now president obama is due to speak in northern ireland. he's at the g8 summit. as kyla campbell reports, some of the top international leaders found out something this morning. their past communications may have been tracked. >> reporter: yes. the uk based guardian newspaper reports during the g20 summit in london back in 2009,

shore freeway. the problem with what is going on there that tara showed you. it's very interesting for drivers. you can see immediately after that incident the traffic picks up. and that is because you know people driving by they see a couple burned out what are they here? this is for real. in all that time it takes them to react it slows traffic down. if you can remove the super from the top of the screen there, you can see how traffic is very, very slow until after that scene. that is what we are doing here. that is why traffic is slow. thank you,day. let's go to the bay bridge -- and ken, and other. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. it's backed up. i'm sorry the san jose area northbound 101 and 280 that traffic is moving along very

good. inland communities. around the bay mid to upper 60s in the forecast for your lunchtime. as i showed you a moment ago it could be partly to mostly cloudy for most of the day. the extended forecast here that cooling trend really deepens tomorrow. temperatures dive below the seasonal average. low 70s in the forecast. i expect it will be breezy in many areas along the coast. struggling to -- but then we rebound. upper 70s in the forecast for the inland communities. low 90s expectrd for the in-- expected for the inland communities. a new report shows more people are choosing to lease instead of buy. across the country leases account for a record 27.5% of all car purchases that needed financing. that is up more than 3% from a

year ago. 10% from four years ago. shoppers say they get more car for the money when they lease. california gas prices edging up as we head into the heart of the summer season. in the bay area the average price for a gallon of regular is $3.98. that is up two cents in a week. san francisco prices are higher. gas averaging $4.07. that is up seven cents from a mounting. the growing safety concerns. one golfers triumph becomes a crowd favorite heartbreak. what happened at the u.s..

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. golfer justin rose won the u.s. open for his first major. he shot an even par 70 becoming the first englishman to win the open in 43 years. phil mickelson had to settle for his sixth second police finish in the open and cal sophomore michael kim finished with a six over 76 yesterday and plus ten for the tournament and that is three shots ahead

of tiger woods who posted his highest score in a major since turning pro. time is 6:24. on the new bay bridge there have been cracked welds, broken bolts, and several other problems. and growing safety concerns have a lot of people calling for a delay. however, project managers are doing everything possible to meet that labor day deadline. ktvu got a close up look at that huge construction job. >> they are going to put down two layers and the deck will be paved. all other work is moving toward a labor day opening. >> july 10th cal tran will announce if they will open during the labor day weekend. a new bike lane proposal will be considered in san francisco. the proposal is considered part of the better market street. it cos for moving a hearing on

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. they are just getting ready to ring that open bell on wall street. it looks like a very good day. the futures indicate a high opening. and european stock markets all up this morning. maybe some positive thinking about what is going to happen at the g8 summit. we also have some losses. so we will see what happens. it looks like a very good day this morning. there is the opening bell. we'll smile and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us here. it's a monday, june 17th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. thank you for joining us. time is 6:30. we are following that breaking news out of san jose where a driver in a deadly crash is expected to face charges. ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega is there at the scene. you have been there since 4:30 this morning. what have you been able to find out? >> reporter: we learned in the last half hour that police will

be arresting the driver of this crash. they are telling us he will be booked for driving under the influence and vehicle manslaughter with gross negligence. the car you see where the roof has been completely ripped off is where the driver was. it happened here where pearl avenue turns into foxxworthy. you can see there is a traffic investigation unit out here and they are collecting evidence. this accident happened at 2:00 this morning. police say it aer poos the driver of the toyota avlon was speeding. somehow the 18-year-old driver survived. neighbors say they heard the

crash. >> i heard a crash and bang. an hour later we came out to check on it. my friends saw a cop car pass by. >> reporter: police say they found several beer cans inside the car. again they believe that alcohol played a part in this accident. one witness that we spoke to off camera told us he saw the driver stumble out of the car and the driver started asking him what happened? who wassen police identified that driver of 18-year-old martin acosta. he's still at the hospital and has facial injuries. nothing life threatening. police believe the two men in the car were coworkers at a restaurant that maybe they were levering work. they were both wearing the same uniform. but back autohere live the coroner has not aryed yet this intersection will be blocked

off at least we are now we are getting a lock at a alex savidge is live in -- >> this morning is physically unhurt. but pacifica police want you to take a look at this sketch. the man they are trying to find. everything happened about 4:30 yesterday afternoon. police say the man depicted in the sketch approached this ten- year-old girl and told her to come with him. he then grabbed her. she in turn punched this man and managed to run off and get away. the man also took off and police are trying to ask for your help to track him down. he's described as a white man. likely in his 30s. he was last seen wearing jeans

and a red checkered shirt. this morning i put in a phone call top pacifica police. there could be a captain with the department that could be updating us on this investigation. we're told that we could get more information on the search for this man as soon as we get more information on the situation, we will certainly pass that along to you. live this morning in pacifica alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. a mentally ill man is dead and two fremont police officers are now on administrative leave. the shoots happened yesterday morning on alone street. officers were called to help a woman who said her 53-year-old son was armed with a knife and out of control. police say two officers entered the families home. they were confronted by the suspect. they fired shots. there are no details yet on exactly how the man threatened the officers. an 11-year-old boy in oakland recovering after being grazed by a bullet as he was sleeping in his home.

someone started shooting about 5:00 yesterday morning at an apartment with eight people inside. bullet went through the wall right next to the pillow where that child was resting his head. the boy's brothers were also in that bed but they were hurt. >> this is not the first time. they have done it before. they shot through right there. almost hit my dad. last time they shot in our backyard and hit my window. i woke up with glass all over me. >> oakland police say there is no obvious motive for that shooting. a white car was seen driving away. they castro valley restaurant that was the scene of a -- they were forced to shoot and kill a man who pointed a gun at them after a robbery

attempt. moments earlier a very alert employee lunged at that gunman. possibly saving the lives of those police officers. a nasty sewage problem at oakland coliseum overflowed on sunday. sewer pipes backup. pools of dirty water in the stadiums lower levels forced both teams to move from their locker rooms to higher ground. coliseum officials say six straight home games attracting 170,000 fans overloaded the plumbing. the a's want a new stadium. they have not received a green light from the league. the coliseum is 47 years old. they have been closed for repairs. over the next four days santa clara county supervisors

morning. police say speed and alcohol appear to be factors. also this morning park police in the livermore area they will be searching again for a missing kayaker. it's believed he drowned while boating yesterday afternoon. and another driver facing possible dui charges after a freeway crash in hayward where four children were injured. this happened after 10:00 last night on northbound 880. two of the victims they were the drivers own stepchildren. we're also following developing news out of berkeley. two sheriffs squad cars caught fire after a brief chase in the east bay this morning. ktvu tara moriarty joins us now from the crash scene. this is along interstate 80. >> reporter: two patrol cars were chasing a suspect. if you take a look to the right this is the off ramp for university avenue. you can see the car going this direction. the patrol cars and the suspect car were going the opposite

way. they crossed over that off ramp and started to go through this brush. look how far they went all the way through this ice plant, through these trees that came to rest here. the suspects car got away. now the tow truck is just now taking those two squad cars away. one is a total loss. it all unfolded around 3:45 this morning. two sheriffs deputies noticed a black lexus with no plates. when they tried to pull over the driver, he sped off and led deputies on an 11 minute chase into berkeley. >> the lexus took the off ramp and quickly left the off ramp with intent and drove through a patch of foilage. the patrol cars attempted to follow the lex lexus they became stuck. >> reporter: lieutenant beard says the exhaust systems appear

roast key. a natural gas leak tied up traffic and forced hundred people to evacuate. it happened at about noon yesterday when construction workers accidentally hit a pg&e line at fourth and folsom. police shut down several blocks in the area. a convention at the most cone knee center was evacuated. a woman intentionally lifted the lid offer a concord storm drain and jumped in. a contra costa county sheriffs deputy says he was looking down at her when she suddenly ran down a sewage tunnel. that is when firefighters james kell was lower into the drain to track her down. the woman was hoisted up and taken to a hospital for
