>> reporter: frank, police reopened this section of taylor street a little more than an hour ago. it's one of a disturbing trend in san jose this year. only this time, police are looking for a hit and run driver. it was the beginning of the afternoon rush hour. everything on a busy trailer street in san jose came to a full stop. >> when i walked by, and i seen what happened, my immediate concern was it had something to do with someone speeding and a bicyclist and sure enough. >> he was likely struck by a vehicle. that vehicle fled the scene. >> reporter: investigators are calling it a felony hit and run. >> one of our big questions is, how many people actually saw this? >> taylor street tends to be pretty busy all day. >> reporter: the force of the crash knocked the victim out of his shoes. what appears to be a bumper, sat in the road, miles away.

police sergeant jason dwyer says these can take an emotional toll for everyone involved. what was probably someone's last moments of life fit into a bag. there have been 19 deadly accidents in san jose this year. in 13 of those cases, the victims were either walking or riding a bike. >> it's high. we're not comfortable with that number. >> reporter: cyclists ride without the added danger of cars and trucks. police say drivers being distracted, and cyclists not using bike paths could be contributing to the deadly accident spike. >> a bike lane is not going to save you from cars speeding, trying to get home. speeding all the time. >> reporter: you can see there's a bike lane on this side of the street, but not on the other side of the street where the bicyclist was found.

police are hoping someone will say something to help them catch the person who sped away. noel walker, ktvu, channel 2 news. now to vallejo, where investigators are look forgot a gunman, or gunmen after three people were shot this evening. one of the three was pronounced dead at the scene. police tell us the shooting happened at 5:45 a.m. we're told the gunman fired from outside the house, using a high caliber weapon. police say the crime may be gang related. the two surviving victims were taken to the hospital. at this point, there is no word on the identities. stiff wind burning barns, chicken coops, and outdoor buildings. live in petaluma on thompson lane, where firefighters on the ground, needed air support to stop this blaze. >> reporter: it came just in time with about 20 homes in danger. we are on the property where

the fire started. there is still an engine here, posted overnight, and this triarea is the potential car of origin, all taped off. >> it jumped, i'm going to say about 600 yards. it jumped right to where these buildings are, and thew field below knee just exploded in flames. >> reporter: mike thought he had time and distance. but the fire had a stiff wind. >> it would just go up like a firework. >> reporter: this barn, near the fire's start, was the first of several outbuildings to go. but the grass fire didn't get any houses. >> we started to do an evacuation, and then it kind of got toned down. we started getting the handle on it. the air drop starting to take effect. >> reporter: caltrain came in with four tankers, and a helicopter, plus bulldozers, and hand crews. some residents did pack up their pets and clear out. it was a frantic fire fight,

with 20 mile-an-hour gusts blowing from the west. >> it was really frightening. especially with the wind, and the wind was blowing this way. it was coming more and more towards the house. and i got so frightened. >> reporter: this house came as close as any to burning. the roof and chimney stained pink by fire retardant showering down. it's at least a half mile from the fire's origin, with a green swath of field, spared in between. the owners say they'll never hear the wind quite the same way. up until dark, fire investigators were out hour, trying to zero in on the ignition point and the cause. they've been talking to the family that lives here and lost that big barn. investigators tell me though, as of about a half hour ago, nothing conclusive yet. all in all, quite a relief for the rural residents who dodged

a bullet today. reporting live in petaluma, debra villarion. the wind ripped fire, and burning near mariposa. one of the main routes in and out of yosemite, the fire broke out yesterday, more than 700 firefighters are now on the scene. cal fire says it's 15% contained. no word yet on how it started. san francisco police are ising for the public's help identifying two teenage girls wanted for robbing a senior citizen on a muni train. we asked for the surveillance video today. it shows the teens walking up to the 68-year-old woman, punching her in the face, and then stealing her two purses. the woman tried to hold onto her bags, but couldn't. the assault happened 8:30 last tuesday night on the t third

line. investigators say the girls are believed to be either 13 or 14 years old. a man was spotted on the ledge, shortly after 4:00 this afternoon. police set up a perimeter, and called in a negotiator who was able to talk him down, just before 6:00. during that time, caltran service out of the city was stopped, and passengers were redirected onto bart. the man was taken to a hospital for evaluation. apple is releasing information it received 4 to a thousand requests during the 6 months ending in may. the company says not all the requests came from the security agency. apple says most requests are routine, and come from police investigating crimes. a new cnn poll shows president barack obama's approval rating has taken a

beating. the poll shows 45% approve of the job the president is doing, the lowest in a year and a half. 54% say they disapprove. the biggest decline in support comes from younger people. hungs of workers at the livermore lab have accepted buyouts. a spokesperson says 399 employees resigned. the lab director had asked for up to 600 employees to voluntarily resign earlier this year. the spokesperson said most of those who are leaving are within five years of retirement. new information tonight on an assault of a worker at napa state hospital. it's a facility that has a history of patient on staff violence. a source tells ktvu, last night's assault happened in a secure area. the patients found incompetent

to stand trial. state officials said the nurse activated a personal alarm, prompting other staff to respond to the area. our source told us it was a female nurse who was grabbed from behind by a male patient who has a long history of sexual assault. the source says another patient then punched the assailant, and that ended the attack. the personal alarms are one of the safety measures that were put in place after a psychiatric technician was strangled by a patient and died three years ago. state legislation aimed at making limos safer. as ken pritchett reports, some limo owners say the cost of the service could shut them down. >> they add the 5th door to limousines right here. >> reporter: samuel davis is a limo driver, owner of his own company. he doesn't have money to throw around, or to add a new door to his limo, but he may have to. >> 7 to $10,000. >> reporter: a new bill at the

we showed you video of him lungeing at passengers and bart workers. he is being held on $100,000 bail. he is facing deportation to his native columbia. many people saw that incident, but only the station agent called police. heather, you learned of another incident in which a homeless man was dying on the street. many people recorded it, but only one person reported it to police. >> reporter: gasia, that person is a department of public works employee. she was working here when she saw that homeless man badly bleeding. she actually called 911. the job went from sweeping the street, to trying to save a man's life. >> you see somebody dying, you'd think you would want to help. no one helped. >> reporter: despite a packed market street on a friday afternoon, she was the only

person to report the homeless man dying on the sidewalk. >> just walking by, taking pictures, videoing. >> reporter: a quick search of youtube, and you will find plenty of people recording incidents, but not reporting them. a 1999 law requires viewers report crimes but only if the victim is under 14. >> are we going to criminalize individuals who refuse to take action? >> reporter: kevin ryan says you can't legislate morality, and legally requiring witnesses of all crimes to come forward raises issues. >> someone to be convicted of not reporting a crime, in which the jury reports there was no crime. how do you track that in the system? >> we don't stand by, and watch no one get treated like that without stepping in and doing something. >> reporter: the bart employee told me his faith, not a law

nervous after that shooting. so far, police have not made any arrests in the case. mayor lee introduced a fleet of new buses for muni today. some of the most ecofriendly puss in the country. today's event though didn't go exactly as planned. one of the new buses malfunctioned, forcing the mayor and other city officials to get off, and board a different bus to city hall. it appears the problem was caused by the hydraulic system on the bus. for the first time, the victim of a homecoming rape told her story. 16 at the time of the attack, jane doe is now 22 years old. >> reporter: our cameras caught the two defendants in this case. 20-year-old marcelus peter, wearing a blue shirt, and 22- year-old jose montana, in 2009,

she was a 16-year-old sophomore. for the first time, we heard why she left richmond high's homecoming dance early that night. a migraine she says caused by the strobe lights forced her to leave. after walking out of the dance, she didn't call her father. a friend called her over to the picnic tables to hang out with them. she woke up in the hospital. police records show jane doe had a .35% alcohol level when she was found. the defense attorney asked about police questioning done in the hospital. do you remember a police officer asking you about whether you had sex and you said no? no do you remember telling an officer you shouldn't have drank so much? again no. graphic injuries.

when demonstrated how hard she had been hit on one side of her head. an ear print visible on her skin. jade hernandez, ktvu, channel 2 news. the u.s. supreme court today handed down several rulings expected to have a widespread impact including one that could lower the cost of many prescription drugs. generic brands can be sold at considerably lower prices. some pharmaceutical companies make deals with their competition to delay the introduction of those generic drugs. today's ruling could lead to those brand name drug makers possibly being sued for violating anti-trust laws. the high court also struck down part of arizona's voter registration law that requires proof of citizenship. supporters say it helps to

prevent voter fraud. opponents called it unconstitutional, saying it created an added layer of paperwork for tens of thousands of citizens. the high court ruled that a federal form is sufficient. the justices did not issue that highly anticipated rulings on same-sex marriage. that including california's prop 8, and the federal defense of marriage act. the next batch of rulings is expected on thursday, and then again next monday. fewer people are getting married right now than they have in a decade. that could soon change. a company called demographic intelligence says pent up demand, and a large number of young singles will fuel a surge in weddings. it is predicting the trend will continue through 2015. temperatures today were on the mild side. temperatures tomorrow are going to be cooler. numbers tomorrow in the 70s. instead of the mid-80 we saw in

accused serial killer, joseph naso went on trial today. he told the jury he's not the monster he's accused of being. kristin also tells us, why one of the jurors in the case started crying today. >> reporter: joseph naso faced the jury today, accused of killing four women in crimes dating back to the late 1970s. the judge would not allow audio to be recorded in today's opening statements. starting off by showing evidence of the bodies. a sight that brought at least one juror to tears. she wrapped up her opening statements, saying the defend in this case is a serial rapist, and murderer, and he killed the four victims in this

case beyond a reasonable doubt. >> she did a really good job of laying it all out. >> reporter: joseph naso is defending himself, he started out addressing the jury saying, good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. you are a welcome fight. i've been waiting 2 years and 2 months to tell my side. he explained about his love of photography and how he moved around the state. a large crowd lined up to watch the opening statement. some say naso seems like an opening man. >> i think he did address the case, clearly that he had a real potential of being innocent of the crimes. >> reporter: although naso is defendanting hill self, a public defender is assisting in his case. >> mr. naso wanted to convey that he is innocent of all charges. that he is eager to get this trial underway. >> reporter: this trial is expected to run through november. at maren county, superior court

in san rafael, kristin caston, ktvu, channel 2 news. police are reporting an attempted kidnapping. here's that sketch, police say this sketch looks like the man who tried to grab a 10-year-old girl. the man is described as stalky, about 6 feet tall, and was wearing a red checkered shirt and jeans. police say the girl was walking with a friend prosecute the pacifica pier to the parking lot to meet her mother. it was about 4:25 yesterday afternoon. she said a man then confronted her. >> in essence telling her she was going to be coming with him. when she refused, he attempted to physically restrain her. she punched him in the stomach and was able to free. >> police are looking at surveillance cameras and possible witnesses. they say so far, they don't have any good leads. a good samaritan came to the rescue of three dogs. they were all together in the sun. the older one was tied to a

it's been a main stay at fisherman's wharf. now the wax museum is closing. >> reporter: that's right, fisherman's wharf is a vibrant place tonight, but the wax museum, known for immortalizing the famous will soon be history. fisherman's wharf in june brings plenty of visitors. this is the last summer people will be able to visit the wax museum, the way it's been for five decades. religion. >> knew what it was to be the last supper. >> reporter: politics and entertainment. the 46-year-old is the third generation to run the museum. his beloved grandfather passed away in 1999. the family decided to sell the

renovating it right away, that new museum is slated to open next summer. live at fisherman's wharf, amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. wall street started the week on an upnote as investors wait for what the federal reserve will be next. the dow industrials was up 109, the nasdaq added 28. the fed is set to meet tomorrow and wednesday and may reveal new information about its stimulus efforts. netflix announced a major deal with dreamworks animation. dreamworks will provide them with 300 hours of original programming. the news pushed netflix stock up by 7%. the san francisco 49ers announced an internet deal witha yahoo. they will be the exclusive

online image sharing partner at levi stadium. no word on how much yahoo paid for the rights. the 10 year agreement is set to begin when the stadium opens. 11 stolen go-karts are demanding the attention of dublin police. officers say they were stolen from the valley christian center. they were used by a youth ministry program and were taken from a locked storage container in the parking lot. they're worth a total of about $16,000. berkely police are looking for the suspects who pistol whipped, and robbed a couple parked on grizzly peak. the two were sitting in a car on the lookout about 3:00 a.m. saturday. police say two men came up to them, beat them with a handgun, and then robbed them. both the victims suffered cuts to their faces. police say one attacker was described as a hispanic man in his mid-20s, with a 10-inch gray or black handgun.

the second man was white, about 20 years old. a young hispanic woman drove them away in a light blue four door sedan. a fatal crash may be connected with some beer stolen from a convenience store. it all happened about 2:00 this morning on foxworthy avenue. a toyota avalon hit a row of parked cars. the passenger, 40-year-old henry almedo died at the scene. police arrested the 18-year-old driver on suspicion of dui and manslaughter. >> when i got to him, i smelled liquor on his breath. he was stumbling. didn't know what happened. >> reporter: police are investigating whether the two men may have stolen beer from a 7-eleven store about a mile away just a few minutes before that crash. at this point, authorities have not yet released the name of the driver. davis police announced the arrest of a 16-year-old boy today in the killing of a well

known yolo lawyer and his wife. police discovered the bodies in their south davis hope april 15. police say the teenager is the only suspect in the case. they say there were fines of forced entry, but nothing was stolen. no word on a motive. new details in the death of richard ramirez, the serial killer known as the night stalker. he died of complications from concern. in addition, he had chronic substance abuse and hepatitis c. he died on june 7. he was 53 years old. in news of the world tonight, in northern ireland, president obama and the leaders of the richest nations met for the g8 summit and talked trade. similarly, mr. obama sat down with russian president vladimir putin. they both agree the syrian rebels and regime need to begin

two northern california teens found themselves in a true life cliffhanger. the two tried to hike across an 8600-foot peak in the sierra bukes. they found themselves with nowhere to go. >> there is a massive, just i don't know, gap. we are really high up, and there is no way down. >> winds were gusting, and it took helicopter crews several passes to get ropes to the teens. the teens say they were

terrified to be dangling from the ropes. the helicopter rescuer says it was the most challenging rescue of his 12 years. ktvu news has learned a flood of complaints about the system failing to keep up with payments. as patty lee explains, hundreds of drivers may have been unfairly penalized. >> reporter: crossing the golden gate bridge without a pass has become an exercise in frustration. >> i just wondered when they were going to bill me. >> reporter: she sent in a $6 check. but three days ago, she received this notice of toll evasion. >> i'm thinking, i know i paid it, but i better double check. >> reporter: when she saw her check cleared three weeks earlier, she got mad, and she's

san jose based orchard supply hardware has been a presence for more than 80 years. today, the chain filed for bankruptcy. that company is now bought up by another big chain. >> reporter: orchard supply and hardware stores are familiar, for some even historic sites in the so you bay. some customers were stunned when the company filed for bankruptcy protection today. >> this is my go to place. i'm going to be a little lost. >> reporter: the original was built in san jose in 1931. they remember when osh really was the valley's orchard supplier. >> i remember my grandfather always going to orchard supply, being a farmer. in the day, in 1936, and 1937, it was created to supply the farmers with all of their tools for farming. >> reporter: farms disappeared, and big box stores swallowed up
