breaking news. crews locate a van that was submerged for hours after witnesses saw it plunge into the bay. good evening, i'm julie hainer >> and i'm craig somberville. >> witnesses saw the vehicle jump a curb and fly right into the bay. it all happened shortly after 5:00. the van quickly sank into the murky and mud were water. we get an update on the breaks news we have been following from pat >> reporter: you can see the

lights of the recovery boat behind me. divers have broken the car's windows and tripping to attach a strap through the window and shackle it and attach it to the tow truck waiting on shore. you can see there are a dozen colleagues waiting here. here for support. this is a dangerous operation and the assistant chief tells me they are making in zero visibility condition. the water is frigid and they didn't know when they will be able to get this done. the gold mini van sank in minutes after driving off the edge of the marine ya' green. we saw it just as it went in. it was starting to drift. the hood was smacked up against the windsheild. >> reporter: this 13-year-old was playing catch with his dad when they heard the smash. he said he saw the driver, but couldn't tell if the person for male or female. >> the person didn't look like they were moving, so i think they may have been unconscious after hitting the rocks or the

water, whichever. >> reporter: fire crews arrived minutes later, taking over for a group of sail orbs that attempting to the smash the vehicle's windows. >> eyewitnesses saw it coming 20-miles an hour and go into the bay. we have no idea why. >> >> reporter: after two false alarms, divers saw the mini van at 8:00. it was upright in 25 feet of water. >> they attempted to search the car, but because of low visibility and all of the environmental conditions they are dealing with, the divers made the determination it's not safe to get into the vehicle. >> >> reporter: in the past one minute, assistant chief told me they are calling off this operation for the night. they say the van has settled into the mud and they are unusable unable to get the straps through the window. so, they will come back tomorrow. they don't have a time yet, but

they don't believe the van is going anywhere at this point because it is stuck deep in the mud. >> >> police in newark are trying to figure out the circumstance of a deadly car accident tonight. shortly after 6:00 p.m. police say a driver, going west crossed six lanes right into oncoming traffic. he went off the road, down an embankment and into brush. the driver was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. newark police closed several entrances to newpark mall to conduct their investigation >> new video from san jose. dedicated fan officers fanning out as the summer crack down gets underway. it's part of a strategy san jose has tried before. maw reap is live where some residents are not sure if it will be enough. maureen?

>> reporter: it all starts tonight, 40 addition officers being deployed to hot spot as part of the plan to quell summer violence. on an outing to buy a new family pet, it was easy for these sisters to leave behind a frightening ordeal where police investigated a homicide in their neighborhood. >> i was sort of scared and creeped out. i thought they were still probably hiding there. >> reporter: so far this year, police have investigated 25 homicides in san jose. eight of which are gang-related many the latest, a boy gunned down in the king area. these photos show some of the suspects police have arrested. this 21-year-old said she grow up with gang members around her. >> in the past couple of years, i have seen friends family lose people because of this. >> reporter: if an effort to make the city safer, san jose announced a new crime strategy.

they are adding 40 additional officers to the street. san jose was once dubbed the safest big city in the nation. >> we have 20 gang special cars going out. each car has two officers. 40 additional. >> this mother welcomes the new patrol, but is unsure if san jose is where she wants to raise her two young sons. >> with the crime, we are thinking of moving to a safer area where the kids can play outside without our supervision all of the time. >> reporter: a new police gang unit will be unveiled in august. no word on how long the services and extra overtime will last. live, maureen naylor, ktvu channel "2 news." he police want your help to find the man woe robbed a bank this morning at the city

walk for cancer kicked off. the last time the event will be held in the bay area. the organization came under fire when it unsuccessfully tried to cut funding almost immediately after that happened, participation in the three day event dropped. now, the organization said it cannot financially sustain the event in all 14 locations. participants say it will not stop them in their quest for a cure. >> i know i'm alive today because of what kommen has done. he i will walk with them in any city they have a walk and i will keep doing it. >> the three day event will continue next year in seven areas across the country, san diego, philadelphia and seattle. >> >> first day of summer, i'm monitoring a chance for main. when you could get wet weather this weekend.

agent accused of falling a false police report about something that took place in the booth. bart tells me the dispute was with a passenger over a ticket. both bart and the union tells me they want to keeps rolling and avoid a strike something that the 400 thousand people that ride bart daily is dreading. >> it will be bad. it will impact everybody. >> reporter: the workers contract expire june 30th. issues include salary, pension and labor benefits hostilities has gone up a notch. the union contends safety is among the issues that need to be addressed. >> assaults and battery against agents have taken place. >> reporter: station agent seen here speaking at a bart board meeting last month. he is accused of filing a false police report. the passenger was arrest.

along and you see the deer >> police say they have no plans to file charges against a driver that crashed into a starbucks coffee shop this morning. it happened just before 7:30 near north victoria park drive. five employees and a half dozen customers were inside when a honda civic smashed through the front door. the 59-year-old driver said she accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake. no one was hurt and the store reopened this afternoon. >> >> you may have to pay a little more for a cup of coffee at starbucks next week. they are hiking prices at their 11,000 u.s. stores. they say the average increase will be one percent despite falling prices for coffee beans. the chain said they need to cover the rising costs of

most of your day sunday looks good. most of it looks dry. but we get into sunday night and monday, and it could rain up to an inch and a half in parts of the north bay. we get rain in june, but that's a lot of rain, an inch and a half two inches if it occurs is alot of rain. sunday might night, moistening atmosphere, rain to the north and here we go. you see the showers focus on the north bay. this event sounds like we could get a quarter of an in , but most of the rain will end up san francisco north. it looks like it will happen. of hours, rose mary will be here tomorrow morning and mark will be here this weekend tracking it. i'll be back on monday because that's probably when it will happen.
