it is baseball tonight. the cincinnati reds come to take on the arizona diamondbacks in game two of this three-game series. these two games are in the mix for the playoffs. arizona in first place for the nl west with a two and a half game lead over san diego. the reds three and a half games behind the st. louis cardinals. bob, when we see these two teams, the reds and d'backs, you think the story is joey votto, right? >> no question. the story is out there on that bump in the middle of the field. two pitchers that didn't figure to be in the rotations at the beginning of the season. mike like because of the rotation experiment was on the verge of getting set back to the

injury. i think mentally for them, i think it should be simple. i've heard comments from alex already looking forward to getting back and it doesn't surprise me at all. your competitive nature wants to get back out there as soon as you can. as long as you're concussion-free and you feel comfortable with it, just do it as fast as you can. it's like ripping off a band-aid. just get out there and do it. >> bob: major league baseball wants to do everything to protect all the players, you don't want to have any catastrophic injuries. you have talked to major league baseball and your situation and what they could do to protect pitchers better? >> yeah, a few representatives spoke to me in the spring and it's something they've been somewhat pro active with, at least as far as they can. right now it's the limitation of the products available is what's holding up the process. the prolducts that have been mae available don't hold up to

undervalue the importance of just staying healthy. you see a guy like nick, who hasn't pitched for us in about a year and a half, steems you almost forget guys like that are still in the organization and you don't realize unless you're a superstar in the game, if you don't stay healthy, it's a big at the timetoriment to you. and being consistent in the strike zone and finding other ways to beat guys. because it's always a chess match, especially when you don't have overpowering stuff like myself. year after year people get used to your stuff and stop fishing for the slider off the plate. you have to find new ways to beat people. >> we see you flipping breaking balls up there in the low 60s and occasionally getting by with fastball in the mid 80s and it looks like you're having fun doing it. >> yeah, i do. i've never had overpowering stuff. the stuff i have now, you know, i threw up to 90 in high school and that was overpowering for high school. after that minor league hitters

can hit 90 with no problem. it's always been fun for me to play this mental part of the game, watch body language, try to pitch with a little bit of awareness of what's going on around me and what guys are trying to do to you. i watched greg maddux as a kid and i feel he's probably been the best pitcher in the last 50 years of this game and he did it better than anybody. it's definitely fun to go out and try to do that. >> justin: and watching mike leake out on the mound, he seems to have a little bit of that, too, watching hitters and adjusting his pitching accordingly. >> no doubt. ryan hanigan came to me and said this guy pitches a bit like you. he was saying he can sink it, cut it and there's not a ton of guys in the game like that. there's so many guys coming out of college that are throwing, you know, 95 plus right now, it's actually becoming -- i'm more of an anomaly these days
