still light. this area, san jose, heavier rainfall on the afternoon commute. it slows things down. when i come back we will look at the forecast. a big change. a significant change into the next few days. new at 5:00 p.m. a woman is thrown from her horse and left lying in a ditch for hours in pain. ktvu's cara liu has more. >> reporter: this is video of her being airlifted from a trail by helicopter last thursday. she and her friend had been horse back riding as they often do. >> all of a sudden two mountain bikers came around a blind corner. and it happened very fast. >> the horses got spooked and threw both to the ground. she felt pain as she landed on her back. >> she was screaming to please

stop and help. >> reporter: she suffered three fractures in her spine. her horse was found a day later and now recovering from a broken nose and a gash to her leg. >> she was in shock when we were able to bring her down to the ranch. >> reporter: bicycles are banned on single track trails. and the teens didn't stop to help. this incident has many demanding more be done about illegal bicycle use on county trails. >> there is a rogue element that doesn't care. they are in it for the thrill. >> reporter: it will take 8 weeks to recover and likely much longer before she is able to ride again. >> scary. you know, makes me afraid to go on the trail again. >> reporter: they share in the frustration and are working to educate on why illegal trails are not okay. investigators say when they find out who the riders are

francisco woman whose van plunged into the bay is raising questions. police don't know how the vehicle ended up in the bay. why the odds of your vehicle goes into the water is remote there are techniques you should know that could save your life. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler joins us live with steps that could make a difference. >> reporter: this is my car. and today i learned and i practiced how to escape if it should go into deep water. the bay area, bay area drivers are ringed by water. and need to know the basic safety steps. >> people should know how to escape from their vehicle and practitous. >> reporter: 26 years -- practice it. >> reporter: step one, don't panic. >> slow down and realize that it will depend on you to get

out. >> reporter: expect your car will nose down. you have 20 seconds to react. step two -- >> get that seatbelt off. >> reporter: step three, open the window. >> if you do find your window is only partially down, you have to break it. >> reporter: emergency tools but even your cell phone or a kick could do it. last, get out. this was my first try. i struggled getting my shoulder through there window. two more times and i got it down. now i know i could do it. you should not rely on rescuers. it is up to you. >> although there may be people around you, they may act more slowly than you if you are prepared. >> reporter: every year 4, 5 vehicles around the bay area go into the water.
