depth with the ktvu special. the rain that started yesterday continued through today. the north bay has seen the most wet weather. the aircraft sat idle at the sonoma county airport. a lot of umbrellas could be seen out. it rained on and off in the east bay. >> bill martin has been tracking the conditions. he is live with what to consider next. >> some areas over an inch of rain in the north bay. that's where most of the showers or rain fell out. the rest of us trace amounts of .1 of an inch. live cameras looks out toward mount diablo. you can see it's pretty dry out there as you look at all the radars going. rainfall accumulations today you will notice the north bay when the map stops. here comes the rain. here comes the numbers. 1.6. check out morgan hill. we're going to be talking about the morning commute because there's going to be a little

wet on that. the morning with the big heat up headed your way back here in 15 minutes. >> you can follow bill, they're posting updates on twitter and facebook even when they're not on the air. the weather and a run way closure are affecting flights right now. dozens of flights have been cancelled. some travelers are facing delays of one to three hours. travelers in and out of oakland and manetta san jose have also dealt with some delays but not only of the same magnitude. b.a.r.t. workers continue to vote on whether to activate a strike. the current contract expires sunday night. there's no meeting today because of the vote. but the two sides will be back at the negotiating table tomorrow. >> it's just a tool. we don't want to go on strike. we want a fair contract that's all we want. >> we feel there's a deal to be

had. our focus is on keeping the negotiations going. >> the results are expected to be announced tomorrow morning. b.a.r.t. says that riders will have at least 72 hours advanced notice if a strike is called. we have an update now on the latest bay bridge controversy. today east bay state senator mark desonie changed a bill that will no longer allow the expert panel task to operate in secret. as we told you yesterday under the original bill the task force would have been exempt from california's sunshine act and california's records act making it much harder for the public to learn about the panel's work. the governor has signed a bill that adds his office to a list of lawmakers who can meet in secret with local government to discuss closed door meetings

on issues. in contra costa county a parking lot beating has left an elderly man dead. tonight a teenage boy is in custody and the victim's family is looking for answers. >> reporter: that's right, this parking lot is where that beating took place. the man had just had a meal at jack-in-the-box. >> we really actually expected him to live well into his 90s maybe even 100. he's getting old but he was very healthy. >> reporter: on the afternoon of saturday may 18. he had gone to jack-in-the-box. he was attacked and robbed in the parking lot. >> he suffered brain injury,

spinal cord injury, fractured vertibrae. >> reporter: police arrested a teenager days later. >> the suspect was trying to get a cell phone from a local store and didn't have enough money. and he, i guess, left the store and went to jack-in-the-box and ran into my dad. >> reporter: since chang died, authorities are looking to charge the teenager with murder. the family has opened an account to take up donations. the heartbroken family of a teenager killed after a fender bender is asking the public to come guard with any tips to help the se.

work. >> reporter: san francisco's building trade council says if workers want a job they should sign up with the local nonprofit group that's helping with hiring. new at 6:00, a neighborhood group in the south bay is calling for police monitored surveillance cameras all in an effort to fight crime. ktvu's robert handa is live in san jose where the city leaders say it's not that simple. >> reporter: we're inside one home in the neighborhood where families say they want to put more cameras on the streets and have that police monitored surveillance. as you can see this family already has a pretty good security system but it hasn't been good enough. >> reporter: the family has an elaborate set of surveillance cameras inside their home in the area of creek san jose but have had packages stolen. >> even having these security cameras and having an alarm system which we thought was a deterrent. apparently not because they're getting more and more brazen now. >> reporter: the family has

joined others to allow private cameras on poles. >> we're just asking what is there. this is something that's happening every week. every week we're having a few break-ins. that's not good at all. that is saying a lot. >> reporter: we were told privacy was an issue. and that private cameras or signs cannot be put on public facilities. >> unless you have a little bit more than just a photo of the suspect it's still difficult for us to figure out who that individual is. >> reporter: the city agrees but will continue to push for the system. >> now if i have to leave for two days i'm unnerved about it. >> reporter: well based on a request by council member herr era, the city is now looking into if a compromise can be

now to that breaking news out of pacifica where a man had a shark encounter. this is our first look at the damage the shark did to the kayak. the surfer sent us these pictures. the attack happened off lindamar beach. the man was in his kayak when a great white shark appeared. you can see the marks on the

kayak. the shark thrashed around with the kayak in its teeth. the fishermen ended up losing his fishing gear. but other than being shaken up he was not hurt. mass innovators are making themselves at home all over the bay area and evicting them sometimes takes professional help. this is the time of year they get those desperate calls from homeowners. cara liu is in foster city to show us where racoon families like to hang out and what some people are doing to get rid of them. >> reporter: one neighbor i talked to called this foster city neighborhood racoon central. if you live in a neighborhood like this you've likely seen foundation vents like these. chewed up and wrinkled up thanks to these pesky critters. >> i can tell you from looking at that, that's racoon hair. >> reporter: it has been a busy

week. >> this has been her primary entrance and exit to get under the house. >> reporter: he's had his hands full with racoon invasions. >> they will tear the screen. >> it's the time of year where racoons are denning up. the mothers try to pick a really good spot but as the babies grow older they're more vocal and they wrestle around and play. that's typically when the homeowners hear them. >> reporter: folks in the peninsula have had their fair share of run ins. >> he's perched on his hinds. he's huge. he annihilated my trash can there was nothing we could do. >> reporter: he's spraying a natural deterrent to flush out

the family. he had to cut wholes through dry wall to get five babies out of the house to encourage the mother to take their babies elsewhere. >> the racoons and babies were not the problem. the problem was there was a breech in the screen that allowed the racoons to get under the house. >> reporter: critter control of san francisco and oakland reports more than 100 racoon calls this month. and reliable rodent solution has fielded about 50 calls. live from foster city, cara liu. the clock is ticking for the state to transfer inmates at risk for valley fever from two prisons in federal california. the federal order gives pleasant valley and avanol state prison as many as 3,250 prisoners must be moved if at

risk. >> we would like to see this order taken out expeditiously so that we can really try to prevent further cases of valley fever and ultimately to keep inmates from dying. >> reporter: state corrections officials say moving the inmates could lead to racial tensions at other prisons but so far they have not appealed the order. actress halle barry described her attempt to protect her young daughter from paparazzi. >> they come from behind buildings, all of a sudden, a normal schoolyard turned into what feels like a battleground. >> reporter: barry says her daughter nala is no longer wanting to play with friends because of the constant presence of photographers. barry who's pregnant testified. a vote was scheduled today

on governor brown's push to redistrict $750 million in business tax credits to three economic development programs. two senators called for changes to enterprise zones after it was found that strip clubs received tax credits as part of the program. >> casinos, strip clubs would not receive benefits. >> some are against the governor's proposal. the senate floor session started at 4:00. two sonoma wines won top honors in sacramento. five wines were judged as the best of the best out of 2,600 in competition. corbel blanque de noir was among them. imagery estate made the cut

with its $40 cabernet franc. in scattered showers today light scattered showers and lots of clouds. temperatures were mild. i mean we had 70s out there today. even mid-70s. we come in close and turn all the radars on and you see there's not a lot going on out there. what we're seeing is a lot of rain showers showing up on the radar. so rain fall accumulations have really been pretty impressive in the north bay up around santa rosa. current temperatures indicate how warm this system is. you have cloud cover all day in your 78 degrees in antioch. 80degrees in livermore. that's a warm humid air mass. kind of muggy out there. feels like the south more than it feels like the bay area. tomorrow we start to warm up and dry out. we start to clear out as well. the extended forecast just really starts to heat up around here. temperatures as we go into the bay area into the week back into the 90s and triple digit heat toward the end of the

weekends. tonight about 1:00 a.m. lots of cloud cover. you knew that. there might even be drizzle. the roadways are wet now but in the morning commute there might be a little bit of wet on the roadway so be ready for that. forecast highs tomorrow, yellows are 70s. the heat is starting to come. clouds come back. there'll still be clouds throughout the coast and north bay. a little cooler out here but it's starting to warm up. then the heat. they're going to build up over the south bay. as they do they come out from the southwest it's really going to heat up. coastal areas will stay kind of cool i suspect because the clouds are going to be right at the coast. you go up into the past 19th avenue it's sunny and in the 60s and 70s. the temperatures really start to accelerate upwards. it could be -- you can call it a heat wave because it's going to go a few days. but not for the entire bay area. along the coast and the edges of the bay it's not going to be as hot. it starts to warm up tomorrow.

the single day line ups for this year's festival in san francisco has just been announced. the festival is sunday august 9 through the 11th. paul mccarney is the headliner on friday. and the red hot chili peppers on sunday. kind of an easy week for the a's they just played a couple of games but they're in town against the cincinnati reds who are in for the two game series starts tonight in oakland. very strong bay area connection. dusty rose with his staff. talking to bob melvin who of course leads the a's. he's got a strong repore with
