celebrate the decision on prop 8. and in the castro, that party is just getting started. mike is there with what people are saying tonight. mike? >> reporter: celebrating freedom and equality, that is what they're saying. i'll tell you what, a hot wednesday about to get even hotter as that decision-day party set to kick off in 30 minutes or so. the barricades are up, the music's pumping, the flags are waving as the crowd of thousands spilling on to castro between 19th and market. what a day of celebration it already has been. hundreds of hugs and thousands of smiles. san francisco's castro district. >> it's a good day, right? i put on my hunting clothes. [ laughter ] >> reporter: the wedding gowns are out. the community pride standing tall. >> i got weepy this morning when i saw it on television. you can't help it. >> reporter: inside it's all about cocktails and dreams. >> everyone has the right to

marry the person they love. >> this needed to happen. i'm so glad it happened. what better way than to celebrate in san francisco. >> reporter: back on the street, meet the abel family. >> we wanted to come down and celebrate freedom for everybody. >> reporter: they wanted to share this historic moment with their two sons. >> to see their parents are regular people. >> i want my children to know no one should be discriminated no matter where they're from, what color they are, what religion they are. >> reporter: at sparky's? >> very emotional. >> reporter: the owner has filled at least a dozen new balloon orders today, a day many in this community have been waiting for for years and now it's here. >> i turned to will and i said, will you marry me? and he said yes. >> reporter: the decision has come home. >> it's been an incredible experience to see this happening and to explain to our

children that yes, we now too can get married. >> reporter: the official decision-day celebration will have two stages, one for music, one for speeches in front of the castro theater. open containers will not be permitted. i should mention if you think this party will be big, just wait for pride weekend. live tonight in the castro. >> yay! ha, ha. >> san francisco couple who watched the decision from home and toasted with glasses of champagne. it will be 25 days before marriages can take place. that will mean big business for the local wedding industry. we spoke to those in the wedding industry about the effect of today's ruling.

we are joined live in san jose where a rally is just getting under way. >> reporter: it's a rally going on at san jose city hall where supporters have gathered to celebrate the ruling along with the emotional boost it's giving this community, it's generating a big boost for the wedding industry. the supreme court decision was a big hit at the billy de frank community center in san jose today. it was especially joyful for rick. he officiated same-sex wedding. he says a surge is building through the wedding industry in california and throughout the country. >> people have been waiting for a long time. >> reporter: joanna agrees. she's a san jose wedding planner who through her business has organized same-sex wedings since they were briefly legalized in 2008. she expects a much bigger spike

this time around. celebrating their 30th anniversary. they cherish the ceremony they had in 1984, but? >> it wasn't legal. we had a holy union and they said it wasn't. >> there will be a lot of celebrating, a lot of thinking about getting married. >> reporter: wedding planners sense that mood. >> we're as excited as they are, it's maybe even a little more special because they fought so hard for it. >> reporter: it isn't just >> the clerk assessor's office is expecting a flood of

applications, gender neutral licenses are ready to go. starting on july 1st, the county will offer an express ceremony where couples can get married right away for an extra fee. >> ground zero in the fight for same-sex marriage. city hall hosted a watch party as many waited for the decision to be handed down. we are joined live again from city hall. >> reporter: the celebration inside san francisco city hall behind me focused on a woman who was a pioneer of same-sex marriage. escorted by california lieutenant governor and san francisco mayor, 89-year-old phyllis lion took center stage. >> i was really happy. >> reporter: lion welcomed the

overturning of proposition 8. in 2008, she and her late wife were the first couple married after the state supreme court briefly legalized same-sex marriage. >> it's people like pyhllis and dell that stepped up and stepped in a half century ago to these debates. that's why we're here. >> we've been together for five years. this is really an exciting time. our grandmas will be able to see us get married. this is amazing. >> reporter: they applauded an end to the provision. if the ruling would have come down today and stood, frank's union would have denied me access to health care. supreme court justices could have done more to extend marriage rights across the nation. >> it would have been nice if they'd made a wider ruling. >> reporter: one lesbian couple

teared up as ms. lion was escorted down the stairs. they keep a picture of her on their refrigerator for inspiration. >> dennis herrera called today's decision a huge victory. >> it was impossible not to get attached to this one because you saw the impact that it had on couples and people. >> they celebrated with a coast. the city attorney has been involved in every court case over same-sex marriage in california over the past 9 years. he says his office will take immediate legal action to block any efforts to try to delay marriage equality in california. >> religion leaders are reacting. some spoke at grace cathedral proclaiming their support for same-sex marriage and the supreme court's decision. we talked to people of

different faiths who support the rulings. >> as a gay man and a mormon, i believe proposition 8 was one of the most unchrist like things we have done as a religion. >> that is sometimes at odds with official positions of the faiths they represent. the church of jesus christ of latter day saints says it remains strengthening traditional marriage between a man and a woman. the archbishop released a statement saying now that the supreme court has issued its decision with renewed purpose we call upon all of our leaders and the people of this good nation to stand steadfastly together in promoting and defending unique meaning of marriage -- one man, one woman for life. not everyone in the bay area is applauding the supreme court's decision. in 2008, salano county was the

only county to back proposition 8. the high court's ruling was greeted with mixed reaction today. >> reporter: we've been sampling public opinion all day. there is support for gay marriage, there is still plenty of opposition. texas street runs the length of the historic part of fairfield. it was easy to find people displeased. >> even if we redefine it and try to make it equal, it isn't equal. >> reporter: he's a pastor at the church. >> it affects me because it affects society. it undermines moral principles of right and wrong. >> reporter: a few blocks away, this woman preached from a bible. >> when we push god out and bring another way in that's a lie, you'll see confusion and

god will bring judgment on that decision. >> reporter: fairfield is not alone. in 2008, californians voted to pass proposition 8. only one supported the ban on same-sex marriage. >> he created adam and eve, he didn't create steven anderson adam. >> marriage is supposed to be between a man and a woman. it's not something -- if we can give it, we can take it away. >> away. >> i would think there would be a few, but i don't expect a lot. >> reporter: this strait couple just applied for their marriage license. >> i'm so privileged to be able to do this today. >> reporter: why? >> because it's legal now in california for everyone to love each other. >> reporter: and as you can see here, the marriage license application calls for first person data and second person data and both can choose bride

or groom. >> this was the scene outside the u.s. supreme court where the justices issued their ruling on prop 8. that wasn't the only key decision they released. the supreme court struck down a decision to doma which denied benefits to married same-sex couples. michael harbor is ready to marry his long-time partner. he says the supreme court decision will make financial planning a lot easier. >> there's over a thousand laws that are detrimental to gay couples that heterosexual couples don't even think about on a day-to-day basis. >> feinstein issued a statement to repeal the rest of the restrictions. when the clouds will clear

happening now, another live look at the castro district in san francisco, a rally is set to begin there in about 15 minutes in support of today's supreme court ruleings against proposition 8. people have already started to gather as the celebration there is just heating up on this wednesday evening. a lot of people planning wedings and celebrating today's

historic landmark decision. a bart strike may be just days away. we want to show you video as workers gathered and authorized a strike any time after the current contract ends. we are joined live from oakland with the details that could put the bay area commute into a tail spin as early as next week. >> reporter: to say the least, such a strike would put the entire region into a commute and commercial fire storm. a near unanimous strike vote by unions representing bart workers would shut down the entire system. >> we want you at the table negotiating with the district. we do not want a strike. >> this vote we hope tells them we're serious about bargaining and our members support the

actions we're taking. >> reporter: add to their benefits an average of $11,000 a year in overtime. 10-12 weeks in paid days off including vacation, holiday, and sick time. no contribution to retirement which pays a retiree more than $42,000 a year. >> we think there is a deal to be had before june 30th. we hope we don't have to have a work stoppage. >> reporter: riders we met are worried. >> please, hurry up, do what they want. we want to get to work on time and pay our bills. >> reporter: this has been a tactic used in each of the last three contracts to put pressure on the bart board to strike a deal. the last walk out was a nightmare for the region and the economy. >> many of the people who take bart transportation, that's the only way they can have access to where they have to go.

i have to go to san francisco every day. >> there will be a lot of people in trouble even if they have wheels. that means there will be more people on the freeway, so it's going to be a problem all the way around no matter how you look at it. >> reporter: in the last three attempts at this in the last three contracts, the threat of strike actually helped settle the matter. >> don't with the last to know if there's a strike. you can sign up for the bart alert system. auto fest is up in california, most notably in san jose. the city saw a 71% jump in stolen vehicles from 2011 to last year. nationally the city ranked 16th along cities with at least 100,000 residents. richmond and oakland are first and second. it gives authorities incentives to limit jail time for non-

violent offenders. finally under way at hunters point shipyard. city leaders and others gathered for a ground breaking ceremony. more than 200 homes will be built there this year. over the course of the next 20 years, this area is expected to have more than 12,000 homes. >> the buildings are started, we're honoring local residents, putting people to work, building the communities they've always wanted to see out here. >> it was not delayed by protesters from aboriginal black menu nighted. they say they're not getting fair consideration when it comes to hiring for the project. the next piece of the september 11th memorial are in place. four steel i-beams were installed this morning. the memorial sculpture and garden will be finished later this morning.

firefighters rescued a woman who fell halfway down a cliff at baker beach. it's not known what caused the woman to fall. she was helped by firefighters and paramedics and taken to the hospital to be checked out. her condition is not known, but she was able to walk out with some help. a little bit of fog out at the coast. it's interesting because it's really shallow. the traffic deck is around 220 feet. the fog just above that. the inversion is getting pinched down. that means things are warming up. when you see the bridge shallow, you know you're looking at a very warm day inland. the forecast highs as we go into tomorrow -- tomorrow's warm up continues into the bay area weekend will temperatures rolling into the triple digits as we go toward the weekend. the forecast highs, those are
