commuters. they could go on strike monday morning. bart spokesman rick rice delivered the news after meeting with union leaders. >> we justed receive union from both they are giving us 72 hours before a strike. >> union leaders will provide more details during a news conference at 10:00 this morning. now the 72 hour notice is not required but union leaders issued the warning as a courtesy to bart passengers so they could plan ahead. both sides emphasize the notice does not guarantee a strike monday morning. the other transportation agencies are preparing to accommodate thousands of commuters if a strike shuts down bart service on monday. katie is in walnut creek with some of your options. >> reporter: good morning. things are still quiet at the walnut street station but shortly there will be thousands of commuters heading to where

they have to work. and there isn't really a single agency that can -- you can imagine if the 400,000 people that take bart on a weekday have to find another means of transportation we could be looking at a traffic snarl of epic proportions. there are 2500 more people taking bart compared to the last strike down in 1997. some people are remembering that headache and coming up with plans if the strike happens monday. >> i can work from home if need if to be. yeah. it's an option. >> it's not ideal. >> it's not ideal. i would rather be here. i have don't think i will try to brave it unless it goes a week or two and then we'll see. >> reporter: other bay area transit agencies are planning to expand their service in the event of a strike. ac says it will nearly double the amount of riders it takes across the bay from 14,000 to

30,000. there will also with b a huge increase in ferry service. san tran will link up with muni at the top of the hill in the daly city. coming up in our next live report, commuters are heading back to work are not the only people that will be effected by a bart shut down. i'll have the unique way that students are still trying to make it to class if the strike comes on monday. >> the city of oakland could be caught in the middle of three separate strikes. a major announcement will come at 10:00 this morning. we don't know exactly what the announcement is but another union has voted to authorize a strike. city jobs including park maintenance. the city council says it approved a two year budget that provides more money.

workers at east bay regional parks are threatening to walk off the job on the busy fourth of july holiday. park employees have been working on a contract since march. only a new agreement will prevent a two-day strike on july 4th and 5th. the parks will be open for the holiday either way. so activities like swimming would be restrict the. contract negotiations on that resume on monday. we're now hearing from the san jose parent accused of stealing money from the pta fund of his children's schools. ktvu spoke exclusively with keith michael douglas. he's accused of stealing $2700. dennis served as the pta volunteer secretary. >> i'm very embarrassed to be in the situation.

i just hope it's good remedy. >> dennis turned himself in on wednesday and expected to make his first court appearance next month. he's been charged with four felonies including grand theft, embezzle, and two counts of forgement. the munich bound flight landed safely in seattle just before midnight. no one was hurt but emergency crews treated three people. it could not determine exactly where the smell came from. the flight was canceled as a precaution. organizers of this weekend's san francisco gay pride celebration says it's shaping up to become the largest in history. business owners in the castro district expect sales to exceed previous years. some hotels in downtown san francisco offering gay pride packages are booked solid.

the dikes on bikes rally. the festival culminates with sunday cease pride parade in san francisco. annual tradition of gay pride goes up tomorrow at 7:00 a.m.. crews will install a joint pink triangle. but today the symbol honors holocaust victims and worn with great pride. for the first time ever the u.s. military will have a presence at san francisco's pride parade. the national guard will have two recruiting booths set up with two gay and lesbian soldiers. the national guard also had recruiting booths at pride events in sacramento and los angeles earlier this year. 4:36 is the time. certainly going to cause traffic issues this weekend. but this morning a lot of people about what could happen

on monday. >> i think we are all getting ready for it. let's take a look at what we have now. the traffic is moving along relatively well around the bay area. if you are looking at the east shore freeway, it's not a bad drive at all. the traffic continues to look good all the way to the mccarthur maze. and the morning commute looks good if you are driving at the bay bridge toll plaza westbound. traffic is nice. also if you are driving in san jose northbound 28 traffic looks good. we are off to a good start on this friday. 4:37 let's go to steve. >> sounding much better today. just very shallow fog. it will only make an impact close to the bay. highs 90s to 100s. just make sure you drink lots of water. don't forget the pets as well. 60s and 70s at this hour.

good morning. skies are clear. it's going to be very warm to hot inlapped. by the coast dealing with shallow fog. 60s to near 100. a vatican official has been arrested on corruption and fraud charges. he's accused of plotting to bring $20 million euros from switzerland to italy on a government plane. the arrest was part of an investigation into the troubled vatican bank. the official is already being investigated for money laundering. president obama is on his way to south africa right now. this is video of them boarding air force one. president obama is scheduled to speak to university students and visit rob ireland.

president obama was scheduled to meet with mandela but with him critically ill in the white house they say it's up to the mandela family whether there should be a visit. people continue to gather outside the hospital where nelson mandela was admitted more than two weeks ago. they sing and pray for him. the 94-year-old icon is suffering from a lung infection. he is able to open his eyes and react to his touch. the focus of immigration reform is on to the house of representatives. now the senate passed the bill with a bipartisan vote of 68- 32. house speaker john boehner said he will not schedule a vote. he said the house will come up with their own legislation.

marriage. dan kathy tweeted sad day for our nation and the founding fathers would be ashamed. the tweet was soon deleted. last year's protests popped up after the last comment. police have returned to the home of murder suspect and former nfl star aaron hernandez. their search last night could be related to a double homicide in boston last year. hernandez faces a murder charge in a different case the killing of odin lloyd. cell phone records tie hernandez to the murder. hernandez is being held now without bail. and today the george zimmerman murder trial continues in florida. yesterday a friend took the witness for a second time. rachel was on the phone with the teenager when zimmerman shot and killed him. she told the court that she could hear trayvon yelling for

help over her cell phone. >> could hear trayvon. trayvon got hit. >> you don't know that, do you? >> no. >> you don't know that trayvon got hit. you don't know that trayvon didn't at that moment take his fist and drive it into george zimmerman's face. >> zimmerman says the shooting was in self-defense after testimony ended and attorney for trayvon martin's parents say they don't want the case to be about race. governor jerry brown has signed an on time in balance state budget. yesterday the governor signed a $96 billion budget plan. it funnels billions of additional dollars to education and begins restoring social service programs that were cut during the recession. some highlights include $34 million for adult dental care programs. $206million for mental health care. and more than $100 million for child care and preschools.

it also expands medi-cal. a woman faces drunk driving charges and a motorcyclist was seriously hurt in an accident in a small eastbound town. it happened just before 6:00 last night. right near the clayton police department. the woman was heading west on clayton road when she drove over the plants in the median and slammed into the motorcyclist. he was thrown off his bike. she continued driving a few more yards before hitting a light pole. parking tickets are about to become even more expensive in san francisco. starting monday july 1st most parking fines will increase by $3. that means an expired meter in downtown san francisco will cost $75. late penalties are also going up $1. and the cost of having a boot removed from your car will go up to $312. also inching up gas prices

the past few weeks. they will go up another 3.5 cents on monday. the latest jump is because of a state excise tax increase. california drivers will pay 39.5 cents on every gallon of gas. someone who drives $15,000 miles a year will pay an auditional 16 miles. san francisco has the highest average price $4.11. and san jose, santa rosa the average is $4 even. that is 16 cents more than this time last year. 4:49 is the time. a lot of people might be driving quite a bit. to get out of the heat and head to the beach. >> you know what, pam, i was just on twitter. you're on twitter too. speaking of driving and we're getting ready for the bart strike if it might happen. i was here and you were here too. one thing that didn't work i'm just going to drive a little

the 90s. 60s and 70s close to the bay. 80s i think that is exactly what will happen here. today warm to hot inland. warmer. but still as we head into weekend 60s and 70s. 80s around the bay. inland 90s to near 100. once you set up clearlake, vacaville, fairfield. once things start to get established and they will be today, it looks like it will stick around for a little low up here. eventually that will work its way toward but probably not until early. sunny and warmer. it will be hot inland. we have a heat advisory out. that will start on the weekend. temperatures 60s and 70s and 80s. 100 for antioch, brentwood, and oakley. livermore is in there. pleasanton should say 97. temperatures 80s around the bay. but 60s and 70s around the

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. time now is 4:53. police officers on the peninsula are targeting gang members in a new wave of summer enforcement. officers arrested this wanted gang member near redwood city for violating probation. the task force has made nearly 70 such arrests in the last two weeks and seized a number of weapons. special officers will remain on patrol through august. there is a big problem at a marin county beach. a young gray well has washed up on dillon beach for a second time this month. it was first discovered in tomales bay last week and towed back out to sea. the whale is hard to miss. particularly because of the horrible smell. >> it was kind of scary and smelly. >> what does it smell like? describe it for me. >> gross. old fish. >> it's rancid.

>> marine mammal workers will be back out at the beach early this morning. that marmot we told you about that is on the loose it imagined to elude wildlife workers for now. they tried to entice him with fried bacon and spinach. he is believed to be in the backyard. wildlife officials say they live in the sierra. sometimes they hitch rides in car engines and end up here in the bay area. he doesn't like bacon and spinach. maybe they have to try something else. >> doesn't like bacon and spinach. >> who doesn't? let's go out and take a look at the commute now. we're looking at the drive at the bay bridge toll plaza. it looks very good coming into san francisco. we hope this isn't the last normal day for awhile on the bay bridge. if there is a strike on monday. again we are not saying there is going to be. there is possibility of one.

the high may backtrack a little bit. some of the temps around the bay will warm up. i still think there will be a 35-degree spread across the coast. 66 for livermore. a lot of 60s i think that is a little off. san francisco 59. i do believe the 54 in half- moon bay. 51 up in tahoe. 68 already sacramento. 70s in fresno. they will be very warm to hot. really strong big low up in the gulf of alaska pumping in tremendously. this is the same system that brought in our clouds and rain. now the high is building it's pushing off north. sunny and warmer. fog near the coast. very shallow pockets of it. hot inland. temperatures continue to head on out and move up. 60s and 70s and 80s. it will be close for gilroy and livermore. around the bay lots of 80s near the coast. 60s and 70s. it looks like inland temps peeking out around sunday and monday. it will be really hot
