>> it's a friday. good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check your weather and traffic. we are going to steve first. we don't need a jacket or sweater. >> parts of the coast. but inland no. there will be a big difference in some of the temps. some of that fog can be down right cold. there is a little bit but inland fetches it won't matter. 90s and 100s. here is sal. steve, northbound 101 that doesn't look bad driving up to the santa clara valley. also the morning commute looks good on westbound 24 between walnut creek and oakland. let's go back to the desk. we are beginning with developing news. bart unions issued an official warning to bay area commuters. they may go on strike monday morning. a walk out that will shut down the entire transit system. we have live team coverage. katie utehs is covering how commuters are getting ready for a possible strike. we will start with ktvu tara moriarty. tell us more about this 72 hour

strike notice. >> reporter: this is really going to be a nail biter for commuters. basically they will be waking up monday morning and learning for the first time whether or not they will be able to take bart. at 10:00 this morning some bart leaders will be here at city hall in oakland to try to give us more details about why they voted exactly the way they did. remember just because bart unions gave 72 hour notice of a strike doesn't niecely mean it will happen. they can still try to hammer out a deal a contract with bart before the midnight sunday deadline. workers say they wanted to give a heads up to passengers so they can make alternate plans come monday. many remember the gridlock created on bay area roadways the last time they went on strike in 1997. >> it didn't feel like a long day. it's something that needed to be done. we did what we needed to do. nobody wants to go on strike. >> reporter: during the last strike 16 years ago, bart was

carrying 275,000 passengers a day. now that number is 4 million. you -- 400,000. they broke off negotiations at 10:40 last night. there have been signs of progress. talks resume at 11:00 this morning at bart headquarters and continue throughout the weekend if necessary. city workers will be here to make a major announcement in the wake of all of this. live from oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. if bart employees strike monday, hundreds of thousands of people will be looking for other ways to get around the bay area. katie utehs is in walnut creek this morning talking about commuters and other transit options. katie. >> people are preparing for that pending strike. but if bart is to take a temperature of riders and get their opinions, there is not a lot of support for a strike. as we said, it would shut down the bay area.

and bart commuters tell me a shut down hurts more than just riders. >> i think bart employees should be like any other government workers. i don't think they should be able to strike. if they do, they will cripple the whole area. you are not just hurting bart passengers, you are hurting all the businesses and stuff around the bay area that depend on the workers to get to work on time. construction workers to wall street bankers to everything else. it cuts across everything. >> reporter: some commuters tell us they will work from home or drive if the strike happens monday. that could thousands more people on bay area roadways. the strike and bart shut down in 1997 caused huge traffic snarls and there are 125,000 more people taking bart now compared to 97. there are some other transportation options we want to tell you about in the event of a bart strike. ac transit says it would nearly double the amount of riders it takes across the bay from 14,000 commuters to 30,000.

be caught in another strike. as tara mentioned to you union said they would make a major announcement at 10:00 this morning. we don't know what that announcement is. earlier this month city union members voted to authorize a strike. city jobs include street and parks maintenance, engineers and housing inspectors. last night the oakland city council approved a two year $2 billion budget. it includes more money for economic development and social services. in vallejo a man arrested last night could face charges of suspicion of impersonating a police officer. capo followed a car with five people inside to their apartment complex, then according to police blocked the car, pulled out a fake gun and told them to throw out their keys. the police the real police arrived shortly after and

arrested carpel. at 11:30 last night a jet landed safely at the airport. there were 323 passengers. about 16 crew on board. an electrical smell filtered into the cabin of the plane. two crew members and one passenger were treated for minor irritations. passengers crediting the pilots for calming what could have been a pretty intense situation. >> very cool. no complaints. everybody is happy to land. >> pretty calm. it was very, very relaxed. even though we had to wait here quite a bit in seattle. >> passenger stays at -- be prepared for possible delays. as we have been telling you, one of the main runways is closed for continuing improvement work. it will remain shut down until

8:00 tomorrow morning which is expected to slow arrivals and departures. time now 6:07. sal is back. i know it was busy at the toll plaza yesterday. how sit now? >> it's a little busier than a few minutes ago. right now traffic is moving along relatively well. the sun is out and it is not as bad as it was yesterday. not the sun but the traffic here. it is backed up to about the 880 over crossing. we are seeing a little bit of a break here on the this friday. bay bridge toll plaza from there to san francisco northbound 101 that looks pretty good coming up to the 80 split. no problems on the 280 extension. if you drive on the peninsula 101 and 280 still looking good as you drive through no major slow downs. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. good morning, everybody. some fog. way down here. but it's playing into a huge difference in the temperature forecast. there could be a 35-40-degree spread over the weekend.

the big dome, the mammoth is building in. it will be warmer inland but 60s and 80s. inland about 100 to 104 as we go into the weekend. very hot inland. heat advisory starts for the weekend as well. thick fog by the coast. don't forget the pets as well. very, very toasty reading. especially out to the valley. 60s on some of the temps. 59 san francisco. half-moon bay 54. even sfo with a few patchy low clouds at 59. san jose 54. it won't take long. 67 sacramento. 76 fresno. monterey at 76. las vegas and palm springs a very strong low for this time of year. it sends all of that cloud cover up to the pacific north west.

colorado movie theater shooting suspect had to be shackled during his trial. the judge ordered him to a wear a harness under his clothing that will be anchored to the floor. defense lawyers say that will make him look like a criminal to the jurors. he's accused of killing 12 people and injuring 70 others at a movie theater in july. happening right now congressional committee is needing to vote and we're taking a look right here. this is a live picture right now. they are talking about trying to get a long-time irs official to talk about the extra scrutiny given to tea party groups that applied for tax exempt status. and when lois learner appeared before the house oversight committee last month, she said she had done nothing wrong. and then cited her constitutional rights to not answer any questions. now some committee members say learner gave up her right to

focusing on border security and enforcement. boehner says he won't call for a vote on any plan who does not have majority support for the republican conference. the republican conference is scheduled to meet on wednesday july 10th. to talk about their ideas. live in washington kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. police in berkeley want your help. they are searching for a man that is suspected on a sexual assault. 33-year-old john anthony martin described as 6'6", 280 pounds is accused of going into a woman's bedroom and sexually assaulting her while she was sleeping. the woman says he ran away when she woke up and screamed. police officers are targeting gang members. they arrested a wanted gang member for violating probation. the san mateo county gang task force has made 70 such arrests

plaza kind of sun bleached picture but i can see through it. it's not as bad as it has been. this is the first lighter than usual day we've had in awhile so enjoy it. if you're on the peninsula 101 and 280 look good. there is a report of a crash southbound 880 at whipple road. you see the indicator there. we are getting slow traffic in that area. those cars are on the shoulder but you will still see some slow traffic in the area. 6:19 let's go to steve. thank you very much. we have mostly clear skies. there are areas of fog very shallow. some of it is right on the golden gate bridge. a lot of it is just going to hang out by the coast where it will stay cool to mild. inland it won't amount to a hill of beans. 60s and 70s well under way to 90s. yet 50s for some. some temperatures today. warmer pattern kicks in. it could be a huge difference in some of the temperatures as we head to the coast. nice by the coast. some fog out there. they will get some sun.

high pressure will build and kind of expand a little bit westward over the weekend. that will anow the warmest temps to be over the weekend. especially away from the coast. temperatures though again will be all over the map the farther west you go to the farther east. this low will start to work its way toward us early next week. the next three to four days everything says warm to hot. kind of nice to cool by the coast. a couple 100s showing up now. a couple that are close will be there over the weekend. i wouldn't be surprised to see 104. no doubt about it possible thunderstorms up in the sierra. keep that in mind. the coast looks like 60s and 70s. this morning san francisco business times reports the restoration project on bryant street may be the last of its kind in the city. the paper reports developer scott likes taking the old

become back welcome back. there is a new effort to put the tamale lady back in business. she has been selling her famous toe malllies for 20 years but she was recently banned because of health codes. so far she's only raised about $2300. later today san francisco hopes to settle the long running feud between food trucks and those brick and moe tar restaurants. mayor ed lee will sign a mobile food truck bill into law. it sets up guideline for where the trucks can park and sell their foods. now the trucks will be banned from operating within 75 feet of an existing restaurant. but they will be allowed to park closer to schools. we are now hearing from the san jose parent accused of

stealing money from the pta fund of his children's schools. ktvu news spoke exclusively with keith michael dennis. he's accused of stealing more than $25,000 from the school pta during a two year period. he served as the volunteer financial secretary. and patty lee spoke to him outside his home. >> yes, i'm very embarrassed to be in this situation. i'm sure most people would be. and i just hope it's a good remedy at the end for everybody. >> reporter: dennis turned himself in on wednesday. he has been with four felonies. time is 6:26. you have to see this latest video of nasa. >> drop on my mark. three, two, one. drop. >> look at that.
