it's 104 degrees in antioch. 104 in fairfield. 101 in concord. these numbers well above the average. they're only going to get higher. national weather service will put an excessive heat warning into effect. it's been upgraded from a heat advisory. goes into effect saturday through tuesday, basically. we're talking about temperatures in the inland bay valleys easily reach into the 103, 105 degree range. the heat is on in the bay area. i'm back in just 15 minutes. when i come back we'll take a look at forecast highs for your neighborhood. they're impressive. at the coast, foggy and cool. 40 degrees in the east, it's 40. >> thank you, bill. there are a number of dangers that come with the heat, from cooling off to safety at pool. in 10 minutes, the things to be look out for. latest developments on a possible bart strike. the unions gave 72 hours notice they could walk out when their

contracts expire sunday night. there are negotiations scheduled throughout the weekend. one of the unions did ask governor jerry brown to step in and issue a 60 day cooling off period. christien kafton is live outside bart headquarters with the latest. >> reporter: yeah, we've been talking to representatives all day long. both sides accusing the other of stalling these talk. we can tell you bart workers are inching closer and closer to a strike monday morning. this afternoon bart union negotiators gathered saying bart managers didn't show up for negotiations this morning. >> we're here, ready to go. we want to know district, where are you? >> reporter: a bart spokesman says their team is in place and waiting for the union. >> from what i'm told from our management team, they waiting for the response from the union. so the delay from our point of view is coming from the unions. >> reporter: bart union leaders

joined oakland city leaders for a joint conference. >> if i were a betting woman i would say it's extremely likely that there will be a strike. because the other side has not significantly changed its offer. >> reporter: both sides say the other is unwilling to concede on major issues. bart riders say they're the ones caught in the middle. some say if there's a strike they'll brave the bridges and are working on strategies to avoid traffic. >> get up really early and beat the traffic. but that requires getting up before 6. >> reporter: others say they'll simply stay at home. >> i don't drive at nighttime, so i would not be able to go into the city if bart goes on strike. >> reporter: negotiations are set to resume at about 6:30 this evening. both sides anticipate being late here into the night and throughout the weekend, trying to hammer out a deal to avoid a strike monday morning. we're live in oakland, christien kafton, ktvu channel

ac transit says it will add lines. a spokesman says she hopeful that the agency's own drivers will not go on strike come monday. bart says it will add limited charter bus service from bart stations during peak commuter hours. how limited? 2 to 4000 passengers each day, each way. san francisco bay ferry will add vessels. not nearly enough to transport bart's daily passengers. >> there's no way ferries can absorb all of that capacity. >> reporter: golden gate fore says it is already at 100% capacity. other options if you can, adjust your work hours, telecommute or avoid traveling all together. that is if you can. mike mibach, confident. the san francisco police department is also gearing up for a possible bart strike. we caught one police chief greg sur to ask him about the

hot weather. the centers for disease control says heatstroke happens when the body's temperature rises too rapidly. sweating, fatigue and headache, nausea and fainting. the cdc says best way to avoid heatstroke is to get to an air- conditioned place. there are concerns about the hot weather and potential of fires started by fireworks. the warning coming out of the south bay. new details on a case involving a hit and run charge against the san francisco taxi driver. a jury this week found san chin guilty. he could face four years in prison. prosecutors said chin ran a right field, hit rodriguez and drove more than half a mile before friends chased him down and forced him to go back to the scene. we've learned a suspect shot during a san francisco home invasion has died. police say 24-year-old jane

smith and two other men broke into a home about 2:30 tuesday morning. police say they shot the homeowner and his wife. investigators say the homeowner mad get the gun and shot smith during an altercation. smith later died of his injuries. the two victims are expected to survive. the two other suspects are still on the loose. if you have pomegranate kernels in your freezer, listen to this. there's been a recall of wood stock frozen organic kernels because they might contain hepatitis a. crews working at the doyle tribe project have been making explosive discoveries. they found old bombs. one was a three foot mortar from either world war i or ii. another was a cannon ball. they were safely taken care of. workers have been trained to be on the lookout for more. the discovery is not completely

broad daylight. the victim is expected to survive. as cara liu tells us live, the incident left some in shock. >> reporter: it sure did. the shooting happened here right by the curb where the bus pulls into the bart station. one witness told me she heard two shots. one right after the other. crime tape surrounded the el cerrito plaza bart station. the victim and his friend were here meeting another friend when a man they didn't recognize started shooting at them. a 19-year-old richmond man was shot in the chest. his friend called 911. >> we were on the scene. >> reporter: officers at the scene collected evidence, including what appeared to be shell casings on the ground. a k-9 was brought in. the incident shut down the el cerrito plaza station for about 90 minutes. >> they wouldn't let us come up. we walked up, me and a few

other people. >> reporter: one of many perjury passengers were redirects. >> shocking. i used to go to school up there. >> reporter: there are a number of homes across the street here. we saw officers going door to door. police want to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard anything. right now they are still searching for the gunman. i got off the phone with them a short time ago. they say they do have some strong leads. live in el cerrito. second-degree murder charges were filed against a suspected drunk driver for a crash that killed three people. dennis was arrested after slamming into a car carrying a mother and her two sons on march 9 president. since he had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood while driving and he was speeding away from another accident, he decided to file murder charges. initially he was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter. protesters marched outside

maybe low 100s. the heat is really turning on around here. golden gate bridge shot just to show you how compressed the fog is. i've got it working behind me. the fog hanging below the tower. it's foggy in the was a. it's warm in the inland bay valleys. the inversion is swishing down. that's what i was showing you. not getting inland to cool things off. look at this, 5:00 in ocean beach, 60 degrees. 5:00 in concord, 101 degrees. there's your 41-degree spread in less than 40 miles. a lot of heat. here's the thing, tonight it's not going to get that much cooler inland. these are the right now temperatures. 103 in antioch. 101 in concord. overnight lows in, 60s, 70s opinion look at the coast, how much cooler it is. the fog is along the coast. that's going to -- as you look at forecast map for tomorrow it's going to keep things

a federal grand jury indicted a texas woman today who authorities say sent ricin- laced letters to president obama and others. 35-year-old shannon richardson is named in a three-count indictment. the toxin laced letters were mailed in may to the president, new york mayor michael bloomberg and the head of bloomberg's gun control group. authorities say she sent the letters in an attempt to frame her estranged husband. she now faces up to 15 years in

prison if convicted. today was day five in the second-degree murder trial of george zimmerman. he's accused of shooting trayvon martin. today a neighbor took to the stand and listened to a tape of his frantic call to 911. >> there's flashlights and there's a guy, i don't know if that's a cop. oh my cop. and there's a black guy down. it looks like he's been shot and he's dead. >> jonathan good told the court he saw two men fighting that night. zimmerman's attorney demonstrated as good testified that a dark-skinned person was straddling and punching a lighter skinned person. good said he did not see anyone smash someone's head against the sidewalk. that's what george zimmerman claims trayvon martin did to him. another neighbor testified he spoke with zimmerman after the shooting. >> you also asked him what happened. >> yes. >> and he said, "this guy was

beating me up and i shot him." >> and i have to defend myself and i shot him. i was defending myself and i shot him. >> the first police officer on the shooting scene also testified he said zimmerman's back was wets and covered in grass. a paramedic said zimmerman had cuts on the back of his head. zimmerman maintains he shot trayvon martin in self-defense. if convicted he faces 25 years to life in prison. authorities have arrested a third suspect in the homicide case involving former nfl player aaron hernandez. ernest wallace surrendered to police. police in massachusetts said they were looking for him on charges of being an accessory to murder. another man, carlos ortiz was arrested in connecticut and returned to massachusetts. hernandez, a former tight end for new england patriots remains jailed on murder charges. disgraced tour de france

champion lance armstrong says he could not have won the grueling race without doping. he said quote, the tour is a test of endurance where oxygen is decisive. first reported in 1999 that steroids were found in armstrong's urine. for years armstrong denied the claim, but finally admitted to using steroids and has been stripped of his titles. a heat wave this weekend is raising some concern. >> reporter: cal fire says it has its hands full. why the weather and upcoming fourth of july holiday have them even more concerned. it's been there for decades. the latest on the flap over fountains they may have to move to make way for an apple store.
