>> and good morning everybody. welcome to mornings on 2. it's saturday june 29th. >> its cool outside but just wait. it's expected to get very hot. rosemary is joining us now with, look at that map. >> you are right. a lot of pink on here. away from the water we have widespread heat and that's going be for today. today another hot one inland, hotter than yesterday. you notice around the bay we aren't shaded in and along the coast. this is where we don't have the excessive heat warning for later today lasting in to tuesday for the hills and valleys f the north bay into the east bay. farther east inland as we go down south you can see fremont not included but south into the santa clara valley we have this advisory and it's for the santa cruz mountains as well. just a reminder to take it easy. avoid the hard activity. if you are gown out for a bike

ride or running do it this morning because it's a nice morning. we will look at the current temperatures coming up. >> thank you. happening now a symbol of gay pride is being put in at twin peaks in san francisco. volunteers are putting up the pink triangle. what could be the start of the biggest gay pride celebration in san francisco history. >> reporter: and the expectation is for a huge turn out here this morning. more than 100 volunteers will take part in this particular project. you can see them here. they are getting all the tools they will need, hammers, stakes and tarps and will get to work on this one acre large pink triangle. you can see the outline of it and then it'll be filled in by all the volunteers over the next couple hours. they will fill it in, creating a giant symbol of pride up here on twin peaks. here is video from last year and what it'll look like once it's complete. this event is put on by the

friends of the pink triangle. it was used by nazi's in concentration camps to label gays. it was a symbol of shame that's been transformed in to a symbol pride for the gay community. while there is reason to celebrate after the court allowed gay marriages to resume in california one of the volunteers taking part this morning told me it's important to keep things in perspective. >> even on days when we are really glad that we have gained so much there is this memory of the people who have paved the way for us. those people who have lost their lives for being out, people who have been arrested in san francisco as late as the 70s for being gay and to really want to thank the heros and sheroes who have been part of this gay movement. >> reporter: and all of these hard working volunteers you see show up here at twin peaks will have this pink triangle in

about the next two hours. once that happens later this morning at about 10:30 a number of politicians will hold a ceremony here. there will be several assembly members and a number of supervisors from here in san francisco, they will hold that ceremony at 10:30 this morning. this is the twin peaks triangle has been set up every weekend during pride weekend since 1996. live this morning in san francisco, alex savage. >> same sex couples looking to get married could face long lines at san francisco's city hall. the doors opened at nine this morning. >> by virtue of the power and authority vested in me by the state of california i now declare you spouses for life >> reporter: proposition 8co plaintiffs were married just about 5:00 last night. the state attorney general presided over the historic

wedding. family, friends and politicians including the san francisco mayor were there to witness the couple exchanging their vows. following the united states court dismissing proposition 8 the court of appeals lifted the stay on gay marriages at just about 3:30 yesterday afternoon. it meant that gay couples could rush to county clerk offices across california to get a marriage license. >> the person i fell in love 14 years ago and we knew that our relationship would last and our family would last and we wanted our love to last and to be dignified >> reporter: they say their include said for same sex marriage isn't over. they say the next step is to make it legal in all 50 states. >> on behalf of the state of california, let me pronounce you married >> and in los angeles last

night as one of his last acts as mayor of the city, the mayor married the other proposition 8 plaintiffs. their wedding happened about 90 minutes after the first one. the four planned to celebrate in san francisco this weekend at the gay pride celebration. the mayor said he has overseen many marriages over the years but this one he said tops them all. as soon as the court of appeals lifted its stay many same sex couples rushed to get married. the clerk's office at city hall said that 81 couples received marriage licenses yesterday. 51 of those did get married. we checked with other bay area counties, including alameda, santa clara, they saw only a few couples get married because the appeals court action happened so late in the afternoon yesterday. many people had not heard about the news. a number of county clerks in bay area say they expect much more activity when they open on

monday. proposition supporters say they are furious. the losing side in a supreme case has 25 days to file a petition for a rehearing. they called the court's order to allow gay marriages effective immediately outrageous. protect marriage.com released this statement saying it remains to be seen if the fight can go on but it's a disgraceful day for california either way. >> with the landmark decisions on proposition 8 and the defense of marriage act organizers of this weekend's gay pride celebration say there could be record crowds. this is the 43rd year of the pride festival and yesterday the 10th transmarch kick off celebrations. today's celebration will center around the civic center plaza. police will be out in full force especially for tomorrow's gay pride parade where a million and a half are expected

condition. police say a woman was later transported to the hospital to get checked out. it's not clear if she was shot. investigators say they hope cameras from nearby businesses will help them lead them to the gun men. ? police are still search for the person who shot and wounded a man at a bart station. it happened yesterday around 11:25 a.m. the victim and a friend were waiting to meet someone air the bus stops. reports indicate a man they didn't recognize walked up and started shooting. bart stopped service to the station for about 90 minutes. >> they stopped down there and wouldn't let us come up. they said it was a shooting. we walked up and they not letting us on bart. >> reporter: the victim is identified as a homeless 19- year-old from richmond. he suffered a gun shot wound to the chest and was taken to the hospital. officers say he is expected to survive. >> negotiations between bart and it's workers resume at 11 this morning. both sides know they are running out of time to avert a strike monday morning.

murder of a semi profootball player oden lloyd. a third suspect in connection with the murder case has turned himself in earnest wallace faces accessory. another monday, carlos ortis was arrested. >> the man accused of kidnapping his daughter will only face misdemeanor charges. joshua benton took his 11-month- old daughter on monday morning. later this day he dropped her off with a family member and turned himself in. the alleged kidnapping sparked an amber alert fueled by report that he had a gun. police say he is only facing misdemeanor charges because the victims in the case are not cooperating. fremont police are looking for a man they say stole a woman's purse with $20,000 inside. earlier this week police say the man stole the purse from a 65-year-old woman who was eating at the hong kong buffet. they say the bag contained most

of her life possessions including $20,000 in cash. police say he left the scene in a black bmw. you see a picture there. anyone with information is asked to call police. >> the governor is threatening to take the fight over releasing inmates early to the supreme court. a three judge panel has given the governor until the end of the year to reduce the state's inmate population. yesterday the governor asked the panel to delay the release to appeal the decision to the supreme court. the judges have said they will permit no further delays. the governor said releasing the prisoners before the court weighs in could be a threat to public safety. starting tomorrow california is going to have the highest state gas tax in the nation. the tax is set to go up three and a half cents making it nearly 7 two cents a gallon. the state board approved it last year. the sales tax revenue fund

alex savage is live with the installation of one of the most recognized symbols of gay pride and it's happening on a very big weekend. >> reporter: yeah. the organizer said that this week's ruling on gay marriage have inspired a lot of people to come help. more than a hundred, a hundred plus really as you can see up on this hillside on twin peaks, they are installing all of these pink tarps, using stakes and hammers and they are creating obviously this one acre large pink triangle that can be seen for miles here in san francisco. the outline was already in place this morning and now they are just filling in the triangle and creating a giant symbol of pride. we will show you video of last year what the pink triangle will look like. this event put on by the friends of the pink triangle and of course the it was used in concentration camps to label gay men. a symbol of shame that's been

the fire started yesterday about 20 miles east of san bernandino. residents were forced to evacuate. fire crews battled the flames in the triple digit temperatures. once the wind settled down they were able to control the blaze. the cause of the fire is under investigation. starting tomorrow palo alto's ban on plastic bags will get tougher. the ban for grocery stores that passed in 2009 is expanding to include all retailers. they will now have to charge customers at least ten cents for paper bags. starting november 1st restaurants will only be allowed to use plastic bags for soups and stews. the ordinance is expected to eliminate 20 million paper and plastic bags a year. east palo alto is celebrating it's 30th birthday. it starts at 11. the route goes down university avenue and ends at bell street park. the book mobile will all be at the event.

it's pretty much a symbol here. they have it almost complete. just a few last minute details to hammer out here. they have to put in a few more stakes and then everything will be finished up. the organizer of this event says that this week's historic ruling on same sex marriage have prompted a huge turn out here today. more than 150 volunteers out here right now, setting up all of these tarps here on twin peaks, creating this one acre large pink triangle. a huge symbol of pride here in san francisco. volunteers got to work just about an hour ago. this event is organized by friends of the pink triangle. the twin peaks pink triangle has been set up every year during pride weekend starting in 1996. the pink triangle has used in concentration camps to label gays and it was meant as a symbol of shame. over the years its been transformed in to a symbol of pride and after the court allowed gay marriages to

lake del val in livermore yesterday. people say the lake offers them a nice place to cool off. >> i've lived here all my life. i've seen a lot of hot summers and a lot of cool summers. this one's a hot one! >> the hot weather is expected to continue through next week. that has the regional park district concerned. just last week, a 30-year-old man drowned in lake del val. park officials say it is possible a workers strike next week might lead to a shortage of lifeguards. if you're heading up to lake tahoe this weekend, be prepared for a lot of traffic. the tahoe chamber of commerce expects a large number of people from the bay area and sacramento to drive up to the mountains this weekend to get away from that soaring heat. in fact, many hotels already are booked up for the weekend, with many rooms not offering air conditioning. . thunderstorms are a possibility in the sierra! i'll touch on that in a moment. let's start locally with a look

the national average tax on a gallon of gas is 49-cents. the governor is threatening to take the fight over releasing inmates early to the supreme court. a three-judge panel has given governor brown until the end of the year to reduce the state's inmate population. yesterday, he asked the panel to delay the prisoners release so he could appeal the decision to the supreme court. the judges have said they will permit no further delays. governor brown says releasing the prisoners before the supreme court weighs in could be a threat to public safety. the new england patriots want fans to exchange their aaron hernandez jerseys, after he was arrested on murder charges. next weekend, the team says it will exchange the pro bowler's number 81 jersey for one of similar value. the jersey must have been purchased from the pro shop at gillette stadium or the team's official website. >> i think it's a great initiative. i think a lot of people are going to take them up on that, too. it's a smart move. >> the team released hernandez after authorities charged him in the murder of a semi pro

football player, odon lloyd. hernandez entered a not guilty plea. meanwhile, a third suspect in connection with the case has turned himself in to police. 41-year-old ernest wallace faces accessory to murder charges. another man, carlos ortiz, was arrested in connecticut. the antioch man accused of kidnapping his daughter is going to face misdemeanor charges. police say joshua benton took his 11-month-old daughter justice from her mother's house monday morning. later that day, justice and her mother were reunited after he dropped her off with a family member and turned himself in. the alleged kidnapping report was fueled by reports joshua had a gun. fremont authorities are looking for a man they say stole a woman's purse with $20,000 inside it. earlier this week, police say this man here stole the purse from a 65-year-old woman who was eating at the hong kong buffet on fremont boulevard. the bag contained $20,000 in cash. police say he left the scene in that black bmw. anyone with information on the

midfielder for the l.a. galaxy soccer team. they play the san jose quakes tonight at stanford stadium. rogers, who quit soccer after announcing he was gay in february, says so much has changed in the last four months. he has returned to action and says in light of wednesday's supreme court rulings, both the political and social climate are far more open for gays. the national football league says it has no plans to promote enrollment in health insurance plans under the president's new healthcare law. last week, the obama administration launched a major campaign about the upcoming healthcare changes. it says it's been looking for a brand to promote the reforms and says it was hoping the nfl would team up. some republican leaders in the senate say the nfl would risk damaging its, quote, inclusive and apolitical stance if it joined the campaign. it's the start of the most famous bike race in the world. the tour de france began this morning. the first stage going 132 miles. german rider marcell kittle just won the race.

work in san francisco's leading economic engine, the hospitality industry. >> it's going to be a hassle. lot of people will have to drive, so that just means that it can get pretty crazy out there. >> labor analysts say a strike could mean a huge disruption in wages and services for big and small businesses. bart officials estimate about 70% of riders are commuters going to and from work. this morning, police are still searching for the person who shot and critically wounded a man at a bart station. it happened at the el cerrito plaza station yesterday around 11:20 a.m. police say the victim and a friend were waiting to meet someone near the ac transit bus stop. reports indicate a man they did not recognize walked right up and started shooting. bart stopped service to the station for about 90 minutes. >> they stopped down there and they wouldn't let us come up, because they said there was a shooting. we walked up, me and a few other people and they are not letting us on bart. >> police say the victim is

identified as a 19-year-old homeless man from richmond. he suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was air lifted to the hospital. officers say he is expected to survive. two men have been arrested after a fight broke out on a bart train. the men began fighting around 8:20 last night on a train heading to the macarthur burke station. during the confrontation, another passenger handed the man a steel bar. both individuals were arrested. train service was not disrupted. the city of oakland could be caught in three separate strikes next week. there are possible walkouts by bart and ac transit workers, as well as oakland city employees who are threatening a one-day strike on monday. services that could be affected include street repairs, park maintenance, and housing inspections. the service employees international union says it is trying to increase pressure to force settlements with bart and the city of oakland. >> it's time for the truth to be told! it's time for the employees to be treated fairly!

and i'm sorry! it's going to take a strike to get it done! >> some people in oakland say losing services, even for one day, can hurt. mayor jean quan says the city is doing everything it can to accelerate negotiations and avert a strike. a bay area family is devastated after the drowning of a 4-year-old boy. the boy was found at a community pool in san jose last night. several people tried to pull the boy to safety, but it was too late. he was rushed to the hospital, where he died. a body has been recovered from the body of lake in a tomorrow make. divers began searching for the body last night near the aquatic center. the man was with a group of people and swam out to retrieve a ball about 8:00 p.m. he began to have difficulty and then went under the water. his friends were unable to save him. rescue team says one difficulty is water in that area is murky, with silt. in pleasant hill, a woman was arrested for the death of

her dog, which she left locked up in a hot car. the dog was discovered in a downtown parking garage yesterday afternoon. the dog was taken to an animal hospital, where he died. pleasant hill police waited for the owner, 38-year-old angela kleinfeld, to return to her car, where she was taken into custody. here in the bay area, folks are finding definitely different ways to cool off. yesterday, a cooling center opened at the fremont senior center. right now, another cooling center is open in morgan hill. it's at the centennial recreation center on edmondson avenue. officials say it is very important for everyone, especially senior citizens and children, to stay hydrated and cool. well, if you thought it was hot here in the bay area, imagine standing outside in 126- degree heat. that's how high the temperature got at death valley national park yesterday. i just looked it up and the national park service says death valley is the hottest place on earth. it's expected to climb to 129 degrees today. as you can see, people were

people started voicing their opinion on the internet immediately after this cover was revealed. most people who commented were upset and said the muppet characters should not be depicted with any sexual orientation. the trayvon martin shooting trial resumes monday morning in florida. yesterday, two former neighbors of the defendant, george zimmerman, described what they saw and heard during the deadly shooting last year. a man who went outside after hearing a gunshot says zimmerman asked him to call his wife and tell her that he shot someone. another neighbor who saw the struggle between zimmerman and martin testified it appeared the teenager was straddling zimmerman as they scuffled right on the ground. martin's stepmother says she does not know what she will do if zimmerman is acquitted. >> if he's not found guilty, it's going to be heartbreaking, because i truly believe that zimmerman, he killed my son. >> the trial has already lasted five days. lawyers predict it could go as

long as a month. a wildfire in southern california has burned about 350 acres and damaged one home. the fire started yesterday in a town about 20 miles east of san bernardino. residents were forced to evacuate nearly 100 homes. once the winds settled down, firefighters were able to get the fire under control. investigators still have not identified the cause. chevron has announced it plans to pay $1 billion to upgrade its richmond refinery. the company says proposed changes would create hundreds of jobs. they plan to replace older equipment with newer technology to make the refinery safer and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. the city is expected to approve the project next year. the plan all comes after the massive fire at chevron's richmond refinery last year. victims from the boston marathon bombings will soon be receiving some compensation. the one fund boston, a nonprofit group, raised nearly

$61 million. starting june 30th, the group will begin distributing funds to 232 eligible claimants. at least 264 people were wounded and three people were killed in the bombings on april 15th. but to be considered for the payment, those injured had to file claims. it has now been two years since giants fan bryan stow was beaten into a coma outside of dodgers stadium. here is more on his recovery and who the family says should pay for his medical care. >> reporter: there's no masking the strain. each step, a challenge, trying to walk just a few feet. but the biggest hurdles for bryan stow are the ones you can't see. >> you did good, brian! >> reporter: a stunning feat for a man who two years ago was beaten into a coma in the parking lot at dodgers stadium on opening day. why? he was wearing a san francisco giants shirt. stow, suffering massive brain trauma, relearned how to breathe, eat, and struggles to talk or think clearly.

early this morning. around 4:00 a.m., two men were shot outside of an apartment complex on thornton avenue and mulberry street. while one victim survived the attack, the other died at the hospital. investigators say they hope surveillance video will help them identify the killer. negotiations between bart and its workers resumed this morning. both sides know they are running out of time. the labor contract expires tomorrow midnight. if no deal is reached, the union will go on strike monday morning. so far, there have been no breakthroughs on key issues, such as salaries, pensions, and benefits. the golden gate transit board approved spending $20 million to overhaul an aging ferry boat. the vessel san francisco went into service back in the 1970s. some say it badly needs a new interior. the plans include new seats, carpeting, ceilings, and wall paneling. the work will be done in san diego county and passengers on the san francisco to sausalito run can expect the ferry san francisco to be back on the bay in the fall of next year. san francisco police are getting a jump on the upcoming holiday by starting a dui check

schools, and 1000 feet from most public high schools. california shark fin ban goes into effect monday, but a proposed federal rule could undermine bans on buying and selling shark fins. several members of congress are now voicing their concerns. the new law proposed says shark fin bans could be bypassed if they are inflict with federal fishery management regulations. seven u.s. states currently have a ban against the buying and selling of shark fins. starting tomorrow, shoppers in palo alto will have a difficult time finding plastic bags. the plastic bag ban for grocery stores that passed back in 2009 is expanding to include retailers. they will now also have to charge customers at least 10- cents for paper bags. starting november 1st, restaurants will only be allowed to use plastic bags for soups and stews. celebrity chef paula deen has lost yet another business relationship. deen's upcoming cook book has been dropped by its publisher. yesterday, ballantine books made the announcement.
