gomorning, everyone. it is sunday, june 38. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm in for claudine wong. it is another hot day that's expected possibly record temperatures in some area. let's check in with rosemary. good morning, rosemary. >> yes. just as hot as yesterday. in some cases, even hotter. the pattern is going to continue. now it looks like our cool-down may be delayed by a day. wednesday could be another hot one, especially inland. along the coast, we remain relatively mild. this morning, i'm seeing a little bit of patchy fog. a decent on shore breeze. we'll take a look at your temperatures and, of course, those afternoon highs, coming up. happening right now, it is the culmination of an historic week for gay rights. today's pride celebration could be the largest ever in san francisco. organizers are predicting record numbers for the parade, which starts at 10:30 this

morning. here's a look at what's happening now. >> reporter: good morning, the barricades are set up here. pretty soon, streets will begin to shut down in this area. this is where the floats will be leaving from, the intersection of beal and market. and then the parade will head west on market street and wind up at 8th street. of course, with the supreme court allowing same-sex marriages to resume in california, organizers are expecting as many as 1.5 million people will take part in today's pride celebration. most years, just about a million or so people turn out. this year, spectators will be celebrating, of course, the landmark supreme court rulings on gay marriage. and the four coplaintiffs will actually be marching in the parade. there will be a heavy police presence. there will be uniformed officers, also undercover officers in the area.

police will also be monitoring a series of surveillance cameras set up along the parade route. the police chief says it's been a busy week so far, and he says today's celebration will be no different. >> that's the biggest crowd we've ever had, so again, this is right what we figured, biggest weekend for pride ever. and rightfully so, after the decision. >> reporter: now, the pride parade ends with a huge party at civic center plaza. the streets are already blocked off in that area. tents are set up for that celebration. and it will be a big one. a number of politicians planning to take the stage, including mayor ed lee, state attorney general kamala harris and the lieutenant governor. the parade starts here in downtown san francisco. live this morning in san francisco, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. and here is a look at the parade route.

it begins, as he said, at 10:30. and the starting line is market and beal street. the parade then goes down market and ends at a street, at civic center plaza. if you are driving in the area, police are blocking off streets on market. also, the farmers market is closed today because of the parade. for the first time ever, the military is taking part in california's gay pride celebration. one guardsman says it was a dream to openly participate in this weekend's pride celebration. >> now i don't have to hide that part of my life. i can just be who i am and be in the national guard and enjoy what i do with the people what i work with. >> the army national guard says it signed up 15 prospective recruits in the air national

guard. coming up in just 10 minutes, the emergency petition to stop the weddings. legal analysts on the chances the supreme court will halt today's same-sex marriages. we are one day away from a potential bart strike that could cripple the monday morning commute. a mediator has tried to set up one last bargaining session for 11:00 this morning. union members spent last night making picket signs. union representatives left the negotiations early yesterday, saying they waited for hours for a face-to-face meeting that ended up lasting ten minutes. >> we haven't even begun to really bargain. they are not addressing our safety concerns. >> to avert a strike, you don't necessarily have to reach a full agreement. you simply have to have people feeling there's enough progress being made to stay working and

stay talking in last night, bart raised their offer from 1% to 2% pay hikes each year for four years, while easing employee contributions for pension and medical benefits. transit workers say they made concessions in the past and are asking for a 15% increase. we will have a live interview on the bart negotiations at the top of the area. besides bart, ac transit workers are threatening to walk off the job when their contract expires at midnight tonight. the union says workers' safety is a big concern, because there was a big jump in workers' injuries between 2011 and 2012. ac transit has about 200,000 riders a day. in the event of a bart or ac transit strike tomorrow, people are being advised to carpool, take other public transit or work from home to cut down on all of that traffic. here are some alternatives.

labor practice charges against the city. union employees say the city of oakland is asking them to take a 10% pay cut and is not bargaining in good faith on new contracts. the mayor says the city is still trying to negotiate. the current contracts expire today. rec centers and park facilities will be closed, on what could be the hottest day of the year, if there is no deal. oakland police are looking for the person who shot and injured two teenagers near a park. it happened on sunnyside street near 96th avenue. police say a girl and a boy were standing near the park when someone shot them. both were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition. police hope anyone with information will step forward and help catch the shooter. it's going to be another

hot day around the area. park officials say they have double the usual attendance and close to full capacity. at the farmers market, the big seller? ice cold water! >> you notice i've got this nice towel behind my check. that keeps me chilled and cold and looking good. absolutely. >> contra costa firefighters say they have been getting a lot more calls about heat stroke than usual. they are reminding people to stay hydrated. several cooling centers have opened to help people get relief from the heat. the pleasanton senior center has opened its doors to keep people out of the heat. >> are you going to take a dip in the pool today? >> that little pool we have in our backyard. but it's still refreshing. it's fun! >> sometimes you need that to make sure you're staying hydrated and keeping cool. it can really be dangerous if you don't. >> you're right. and the blistering heat will be

back. a near repeat of what we felt yesterday, perhaps even slightly warmer, which means some of us could see record temperatures again in areas like hayward and mountain view. look way in the backdrop. a little bit of that fog bank hugging up against the coastline. we do have the onshore breeze that continues to keep temperatures right along the coast feeling cool to mild. inland, 95 degrees to 106 is what i expect we'll see today, under mostly sunny skies. today is not a spair the air day. again, you'll want to avoid the strenuous activity, especially in the shades of bright pink. we're talking about the north bay. as soon as you get away from the coast, this morning is in place for most everybody, from clear lake down into fairfax. you can see right around the

welcome back. a nice beautiful shot there of the golden gate bridge. mostly sunny skies for most of us. i am seeing just a few patches of fog. mild at the coast, warmer at the bay, hot inland. there are differing legal opinions on whether the supreme court will intervene and stop this week's same-sex marriages. an emergency petition was filed. they accuse the ninth circuit court of appeals of violating a

waiting period. our legal analyst says he doubts the supreme court will halt the ceremonies. omar says it would only occur if the justices are inclined to reconsider the entire case. omar estimates that the supreme court grants only one or two rehearing motions per decade. meantime, gay couples are expected to continue to get married at san francisco city hall this morning. today's crowd could be as big as yesterday's, when more than 100 couples tied the knot. the san francisco clerk's office is the only one open this weekend. >> it's a validation of our relationship. it's the next step for us. and she's not american, so this means she can now get a green card through our relationship. >> city hall will be open from 9:00 this morning to 5:00 tonight. weddings will be performed by appointment only. san francisco police say two men are in custody after a shooting on a busy downtown street yesterday afternoon.

it happened just after 5:00 on market near 6th street. police say there were multiple gunshots. a man in his 20's was hit in the head and treated at a hospital. police arrested two men. investigators say they are not sure whether the victim was the intended target. the solano county district attorney's office is investigating friday's deadly police shooting in vacaville. 21-year-old lonnie taylor and a woman were suspected of stealing the televisions from a walmart. after officers pulled them over, police say taylor drove his car at them, putting them in danger. he was shot and died at a hospital. police say taylor had a long criminal history. new this morning, president obama will unveil a new initiative aimed at advancing the humanitarian work of nelson mandela. air force one landed in cape town, south africa, a little more than four hours

president is the prison in which mandela was held for 18 of s 27 years of imprisonment. the president will later discuss his planned called power africa, a partnership between the u.s. and six african countries to double the number of people with access to electricity. >> the yearning for justice and dignity that transcends boundaries of faith and country. >> yesterday demonstrators clashed with police. police used stun grenades to break up the crowd. and where mandela lived for years, a group of women gathered, singing songs and chanting for his recovery. mandela's ex-wife winnie says she's shown great improvment in

health compared to just a few days ago. a fare well message on youtube. earlier this month, he talked about his future plans and said he wanted to become governor some day. the successor will be sworn in later today. starting today, victims of the boston marathon bombings will start to receive the millions that was raised to help them recover. the organization, one fund boston, will be distributing almost $61 million to the victims and their families. 231 people have filed claims for the money. payouts range from $8,000 to $2 million, depending on the severity of their injuries. three children were hurt, one critically, after being struck by lightning in indianapolis. the boys and one girl were standing in an open field when they were struck. a woman who lives near the camp

says it wasn't even raining at the time and that the lightning came out of nowhere. >> suddenly, there was just a huge blast of thunder. >> the children are from kentucky, missouri and ohio. a funeral was held for the victims in the aaron hernandez murder case. friends and family of odin lloyd paid their respects in boston. lloyd played for the boston bandits. police say he was killed by aaron hernandez. hernandez has pleaded not guilty and is being held without bail. two other men are also in custody in the case. a hot air balloon goes off course in the carmel valley. and the heat wave continues for your afternoon. i'll have a weather time line of what you can expect on this sunday, coming up.

drivers got a big surprise when a large deflating balloon fell out of the sky and onto a freeway in carmel valley last night. this hot air briefly came to rest as it was getting dark. the chp says it happened just after 8:00. witnesses say the balloon touched down on an overpass between the east and westbound lanes lanes and then dropped to the road before. >> it dropped in this little area where they had just enough room. it was like threading the needle. >> the man said he heard the people on board the balloon cheer with relief, yelling, we made it! no injuries were reported. it's not clear what caused the balloon to land offcourse. san francisco is one of the hottest travel destinations this 4th of july. fisherman's wharf came in at

the fourth spot. a napa valley limo company is offering free rides for the 4th of july. it's being offered by napa valley tour and transportation. you do not need a reservation. and everybody is always wondering, what is going to happen with the 4th of july? is it going to be hot, foggy? we have to get there first. it's going to be a hot road to get there, right, rosemary? >> you said it. the temperatures are going to be scorching. once again, for our inland communities. this morning, it's another nice one. 50's along the coast. 60's around the bay. inland areas are already feeling some of those low to mid 70's. as we get into the lunch hour, it is going to be quite hot. inland, widespread mid to perhaps upper 90's. but around the bay, it's still going to remain quite mild, 70's for parts of the east bay

shoreline. along the peninsula, especially the southern half, it's going to be warm for you. by lunchtime, already into the low 80's. afternoon highs, mid 80's for oakland. upper 80's in hayward. hayward, you are very close to breaking a record for today. 88 is the standing record. 95, san jose. mountain view, also a degree away from tieing a record there. as you get inland, 106. the extended forecast, the only change here is the possibility of the heat holding on to us for one extra day, on wednesday, even though we will get a subtle cool-down. temperatures will remain right around the century mark for inland communities. and then a little bit of a cooling down on thursday. but as jana mentioned, it's still going to be quite warm for the inland communities. the hot weather is a hot topic right here in the bay area.

pride and acceptance on display today in downtown san francisco. it could be the biggest gay pride parade in the city's historic. good morning. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm jana katsuyama. >> and i'm mike mibach. just four days after the u.s. supreme court's historic ruling, it is now a countdown to the gay pride parade. this is a live picture of that area on beal street. it looks like a pretty typical sunday morning out there so far. but of course, things will change fairly soon. organizers predict the parade could draw up to about a million and a half people. they say the landmark ruling on prop 8 and the defense of marriage act energized this weekend's gay pride celebration. the marchers include san francisco mayor ed lee and the plaintiff also the prop 8 case, including chris perry and sandy steer. we have a map of the parade for you right now. it goes down market and ends on 8th at civic center plaza. if you are driving in the area,

police will be blocking streets around market today. also, the main library and the sunday's farmer market at the plaza are closed because of the parade. new york is also having a gay pride parade today. yesterday, new york launched an "i love new york lgbt" website, promoting lgbt tourist attractions. private first class bradley manning is on trial, facing charges of providing thousands of undocumented documents. supporters within the lgbt community are taking part in parades in new york, chicago, seattle and in san francisco

today for the third consecutive year. bart and its workers could return to the bargaining table as early as 11 this morning. union leaders say they are not optimistic a deal will be reached. if bart workers do go on strike tomorrow morning, 400,000 daily riders will have to scramble for some other way to get to work or school. >> terrible. it sucks. i hope they work it out soon, because it's going to be a drag, especially for the 4th of july. >> bart is increasing its offer from 1% to a 2% increase for four years. the transit workers are seeking a 15% raise. we will have a live interview at the top of the hour. here are ideas about how to get around. carpooling is one option. the monday morning gridlock on the bay area will probably be very bad. if you are driving, try to

pittsburg police can watch live video. richmond has 42 cameras. a lot of data from those cameras goes to an intelligence center in san francisco where analysts search for suspicious patterns. police in san ramon have arrested a man who they say kidnapped a mother. officers say daniel medina pulled a gun on a woman. he pistol whipped her and used the gun to threaten two men who tried to help. bliss -- police were able to take him into custody. a man is arrested this morning. joseph andrew martin was taken into custody thursday night. police say they started investigating martin after a student claimed to have been

inappropriately touched by him. martin teaches fourth and fifth grade in concord. the alleged victims are between 11 and 17 years old. walnut creek police plan to release a controversial report tomorrow. it focuses on the actions of four employees after they learned that a coworker was suspected of sexually abusing teenage girls. the workers were put on administrative leave back in march for failing to report the alleged abuse back to police, but they were later reinstated after an internal investigation found that the group acted appropriately. a man may have died while trying to escape the heat in fremont. police say the 25-year-old jumped from a train trestle into alameda creek and then disappeared. three hours later, divers found and removed his body from the creek. his friends had recorded his jump not knowing it would be fatal and they shared that video with police. >> somebody jumping off the bridge into the water, a bunch

of guys just trying to beat the heat. looked like he had started to do a front flip and didn't pull out of it and probably hit face first. >> he fell and never came back up. >> police say the victim had recently moved from fremont to florida. today, hot weather and increased fire danger has forced park rangers to close all public access to allen ruck park. the park is always closed on mondays, so that means it will be shut down for two days straight. and the hot weather has caused amtrak to enforce speed restrictions on their trains. that has caused delays in service from the central valley into oakland. yesterday afternoon, trains were running as much as 50 minutes late. amtrak is encouraging passengers to check ahead for more possible delays. another hot day. i noticed yesterday out on

highway 101, a lot of folks trying to get out to the beach, bumper to bumper by 11 a.m. if you are planning to go to the beach, you may want to go now, if you can go to the beach. it should be a pretty nice day for folks. >> you're right. either head to the beach or here's a live look in oakland. the lake may be a possibility for you. but yes, if you would like comfortable weather, you have to get closer to the water, because that's where the temperatures will remain in the 70's to 80's. the farther inland you go, the hotter it's going to be. giving you a look at a very weak onshore breeze. in napa, seven miles per hour. for most of us this morning, it's a couple of degrees cooler than where we started yesterday. 67 in concord. 64 in oakland. mid 60's, walnut creek. half moon bay, partly cloudy to mostly sunny right now and 55. areas around santa cruz and

monterey, i'm seeing fog form in your area. low 70's in livermore. livermore one of the only spots that is a tad warmer this morning. these are the areas that will see temperatures actually feeling, well, pretty good. but for the afternoon, inland, that ridge of high pressure really has its grip on us. it's going to continue this way. the warm to hot pattern for the inland communities, with that excessive heat warning remaining in place all the way through tuesday, the models now want to push this heat wave all the way into wednesday. so it could actually extend one more day for our inland communities. still seeing a drop in temperatures but it's more subtle than what was anticipated just a day ago. 100 degrees this afternoon for santa rosa. mid 90's san rafael. no relief for these areas.

for the a's game, it is going to be sunny. 100-plus in areas like danville. 105 for livermore. widespread 90's for san jose. the standing the record, right about 98 for gilroy, so i expect you are going to break a record today. 86, san mateo. a nice day this afternoon if you plan on going to the pride festivities. 70's at the coast with patchy fog along the coast for today. the extended forecast, that hot weather is not going away. in fact, it could be a tad hotter monday and tuesday, before we begin that subtle cool-down on wednesday. upper 90's in the forecast. low 80's around the bay.

66 at the coast for your 4th of july holiday. back to you. scorching temperatures are disrupting flights. yesterday, flights were grounded because of the heat in palm springs. the record-high temperatures make flying a small craft too dangerous. >> when it's 115 degrees, the air is thinner. the thinner the air, the less lift on the airplane. >> at bigger airports like palm springs international, the runway is twice as long and the airport is designed for high temperatures. some passengers could experience flight delays at oakland international tonight. temporary run closures will be in effect. there are only a few flights that leave oakland around this time, so it shouldn't cause any major delays. the closure is to allow crews to work on a runway safety project. what's behind a bizarre hack attack on a photo-sharing sight. and the type of meat that

two people are missing after heavy rains flooded parts of upstate new york. at its highest point, the water reached about three and a half feet. many streets are a muddy mess. crews are still searching for a woman whose mobile home was washed away. another man was also swept away in a creek while he was trying to retrieve his atv. massive protests are underway in egypt. tens of thousands of people gathered in cairo to denounce the government of muhammad morsi. they accuse the newly elected leader of aligning too closely with other groups. a new round of negotiations is, quote, within reach. talks are aimed at establishing

an indepennt palestinian state alongside israel as part of a final peace plan. ecuador's president says our vice president, joe biden, has asked him to refuse asylum to edward snowden. the u.s. and ecuador are having extradition issues. starting tomorrow, a new policy goes into effect at facebook. the company will no longer place ads on pages with sexual or violent content. the move comes after several businesses pulled their ads after they were placed alongside controversial pages. facebook relies heavily on ads, which account for roughly 80% of the company's revenue. meanwhile, if you have photos of fruit on your instagram page, it could be part of a spam attack.

spammers have been posting pictures of fruit along with a weight loss product. instagram says it has reset passwords of users who were affected. asian pacific islanders are bringing up their biggest concerns right here in the bay area. they packed a town hall meeting yesterday in oakland. they say they make up a large number of the four million people who have family visa applications that are backlogged at the federal level. >> separation of api family members are devastating for our members. and i think that our priority is to make sure that we have family unification. >> last week, the senate passed its version of immigration reform. the house is scheduled to take up the issue after the 4th of july vacations. starting tomorrow, student loan rates are going up. congressional lawmakers failed to reach a deal, so they're going to double to 6.28%.

a congressional committee estimates the hike will cost the average student more than $2500. >> we're asking too much of our college students. we're narrowing and narrowing the field of who can be a college student in the country. >> the senate can decide to take up the topic of student loan rates again after it reconvenes after the july 4th holiday. the state gasoline tax will go up 3.5% tomorrow, the highest in the nation. the tax is going up because the amount of gas tax money coming in has decreased because of the recession and because cars are now getting better fuel mileage. gas tax money helps pay for highway and mass transit projects throughout the state. many muni riders will have to dig a little deeper as well. the cost of a muni pass will go up. an adult pass will go up $2, to

$76. seniors and youth passes will go up by $1. muni says the increased costs are based on inflation rates. a bay area organization is working to ban menthol cigarettes. on organization most adults started their addiction by smoking menthol-flavored cigarettes. the fda has pinpointed the source of a recent hepatitis a outbreak. they say it likely came from a shipment of pomegranate seeds from a company from turkey.

t a company in new mexico is getting the go-ahead to process horse meat. the valley meat company in roswell plans to begin butchering horses in just a few weeks. some call the plan outrage and cruel. >> it's disappointing that the federal government has said that it's something that can be done. but i still don't support it. >> horse meat is not eaten in the united states. the meat will be shipped abroad to european countries. animal welfare groups plan to sue to stop the plants. a san francisco native and stanford university graduate takes center stage at the miss california project. and loud roar last night. the two stories that brought the crowd to its feet on that hot summer night. and for the afternoon, a near repeat expected around the

coverage continues. this is ktvu mornings on 2. good morning. it is sunday, june 30. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm jana katsuyama in for claudine wong. a hot one out there again today. >> another scorcher. let's go right to rosemary. this morning off to another nice start. but by the afternoon, a ridge of high pressure. it is going to be another scorcher for our inland communities. so we're looking at mid 90's to about 106 for some of those hottest locations. meanwhile, along the coastline, we remain relatively cool to mild with patchy fog along the coast this morning. and for the afternoon, upper 60's to upper 70's. around the bay, 80's once again. we will show you what you can expect for your area and just how long this heat wave is going to last. happening now, it is the culmination of an historic week for gay rights. today's pride celebration could

be the largest ever in san francisco. organizers are predicting record numbers for the parade which starts at 10:30 this morning. alex savage is live on market street. >> reporter: we're on market street. this will be the beginning of the parade. the floats will leave from this position and head west on market street. let me show you the scene here. this is beal street, right off of market. as we push down the block here, you can see some of the floats that will take part in today's pride parade are already parked here. they are in position, ready to go, once things get going a couple hours from now. organizers are expecting a huge surge in attendance today because of this week's supreme court decisions in favor of same-sex marriage. organizers believe as many as 1.5 million people will take part in today's pride parade and the celebration that follows. during most years, it's about one million or so people who turn out. we're showing you video from

last year's pride parade. today the four coplaintiffs from the prop 8 lawsuit will be marching in the parade. a short time ago, i talked with one of the volunteers who told me those landmark rulings are certainly reason to celebrate. >> it's going to be amazing. the crowd was overwhelming last year. but this year it's going to be even more tremendous. and it couldn't have come at a better time. >> reporter: the pride parade will end with a huge celebration at civic plaza. tents are set up for that celebration. quite a few politicians will be speaking, including mayor ed lee, attorney general harris and gavin newson, who of course first began to marry same-sex couples here in san francisco. this is the parade route.

they are beginning to block off of the streets in the area. security, we're told, will be a big concern today. san francisco police will be out in full force. both uniformed and undercover officers will be all along the parade route. they will also have security cameras, surveillance cameras that will be monitored to make sure nothing suspicious takes place. >> thank you, alex. and here is a look at the parade route. take a look at the map. as he mentioned, it goes from market and beal streets, down market and ends at 8th street at civic center plaza. police are blocking off the streets around markets. and san francisco's main library and the sunday farmers market is closed today because of the praise. a constitutional law professor does not think the

u.s. court will intervene and stop same-sex marriage in california. supporters of proposition 8 filed an emergency petition yesterday. uc davis professor omar says he doubts the supreme court will halt the ceremonies. he said it would only occur in the justices are inclined to reconsider the entire case. they grant only one to two rehearing motions per decade, he says. meantime, gay couples are expected to continue to get married. today's crowd could be as big as yesterday's, when more than 100 couples tied the knot. >> it's a validation of our relationship. and it's the next step for us. we're thrilled. and also, she's not american, so this means she can now get a

green card through our relationship. >> city hall will be open from 9:00 this morning to 5:00 today. beginning tomorrow, weddings will be performed by appointment only. it is a first-ever at the san francisco gay pride celebration. coming up, organizers are welcoming the military to the pride party. what it means to a gay service member taking part in this weekend's festivities. we are one day away from a potential bart strike that could cripple the monday morning commute. they are trying to set up one last bargaining session for this morning. union workers are already preparing to walk off their jobs. they spent last night making picket signs. union representatives left the negotiations early, saying they waited for hours for a face-to- face meeting that lasted just ten minutes. >> totally disregarding some of the proposals we requested, telling us, no, no, no, not interested. that's not how you bargain. >> bart has raised their offer from 1 % to a 2% pay hike each

year for four years. transit workers are asking for a 15% increase. bart says progress has been made. we want to call in bart spokesman rick rice. rick, thank you for joining us. why don't you tell us about the offer that is now on the table. >> the offer we provided yesterday, as you said, increased to 8% over the course of the contract. we reduced our requests on the pension and health care benefits. the net result of this is every bart employee will have a net increase over the course of the contract with our offer. >> and rick, i wanted to ask you about today. what efforts are you making to try and get a negotiation done to avoid a strike?

the president tells me she doesn't have any meetings on the books today. >> i just got word that the 11:00 meeting has been pushed back to 1:00. we're certainly expecting to have conversations today. >> what will happen at that meeting? >> they gave us a counterproposal yesterday to the proposal that we provided on thursday. we responded to that yesterday afternoon. i would imagine they'll want to look at that, and we'll be there to work through the mediator and for face-to-face conversations. >> and if this does not get resolved today and the workers go on strike, what contingency plans are you putting in place to try and help the situation? >> we've worked with mp and put together as much of a contingency plan as possible. we'll be using our parking lot as a casual carpooling place. it will be free. we have very limited bus service available from a few

stations at high peak times. but if the trains aren't running, there's going to be a lot of chaos. >> and if there is a strike, what then? is the mediator going to be able to go back and forth? will you still be able to have this dialogue and try and get something done? >> we'll certainly be there to continue the conversation. we prefer that the conversation continue without a strike, but we will be there, whatever occurs,, to negotiate in good faith. >> i know you're dealing with multiple unions here, not just one. what do you feel the unions need to do to try and resolve this, from your perspective? >> we need to have serious conversations and negotiation over the salaries, pensions and health care benefits. >> and what do you say to union members who say they have made concessions? they are claiming $100 million

in concessions when bart was in hard times. now they feel, when things are going well, they should get a little bit of that back? >> our current offer gives something back. the new offer, the way we've raised the salary, lowered the request for contributions, means that every employee over the course of the contract will see an increase. >> rick rice, spokesperson for bart this morning, live on the phone there. thank you so much. you mentioned the time has been changed from 11 a.m. for negotiations, pushed back to 1 p.m. just to be clear, finally, that will be with the atu or which union are we talking about? >> to the best of my knowledge, we're expecting to be talking with both unions. >> okay. very good. thank you so much, rick rice. we appreciate that and we'll continue to follow this as it develops. thank you so much. >> you're welcome. east bay commuters could

face two strikes on monday. ac transit workers are threatening to walk off the job when their contract expires at midnight tonight. the union says worker safety is a big concern because there was a jump in work-related injuries between 2011 and 2012. ac transit officials had hoped to provide additional service in the event of a bart strike. ac transit has about 200,000 riders a day. in the event of a strike, people are being advised to carpool, take other public transit or work from home to cut down on traffic out there on the bay area roadways. here are some alternatives. the san francisco bay ferry will add extra ferries on its vallejo and east bay routes. sf muni will have additional service, including two of its busiest rails. we have posted more information on the looming strike on ktvu.com. just like the bart strike tab.

the blazing heat wave hitting california, nevada and the southwest has turned deadly.

las vegas police say high temperatures were a factor in an elderly man's death. dominique joins us live from los angeles to explain the dangers of extreme heat. good morning! >> reporter: good morning, to you, jana. the guy out in las vegas was an elderly gentleman, according to las vegas fire and rescue. they responded to a call at his home. when they got there, they discovered he was dead. apparently he had medical problems and they think the heat added to the complications, and that resulted in his death. that's not uncommon for people who are sick and frailed. they say, look, you've gotta check in on your friends and family and neighbors at least twice a day. make sure people have got plenty of water and a way to get cool. and check in with them at the end of the day just to see how they fared during the hardest parts. medical experts say it is essential on a weekends like this to keep cool.

>> if you're feeling tired, if you're not feeling like yourself, if your thinking gets a little fuzzy, that can be a sign of heat exhaustion. excess sweating can be one sign. but you also can have heat exhaustion without sweating. >> reporter: so keep an eye out for symptoms like that. here in los angeles county, we had 65 cooling centers set up for people who don't have air- conditioning. here's some of the temperatures we're going to expect today. in phoenix, temperatures hit 119 degrees. that's a record. we haven't seen figures like that in the past 80 years. we're also expected to stay round about that temperature today in las vegas, around 117. death valley was 130 yesterday. we'll see whether it goes as high as 134. inland, hotter. here in l.a., well, it's going

we can already feel it heating up already. back to you, jana. >> domonique, from los angeles, appreciate your help tonight. new this morning, president obama will unveil a new initiative aimed at advancing the humanitarian work of nelson mandela. air force one landed in cape town, south africa. president obama along with his daughters and wife will visit the prison in which mandela was held for 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment. the president will later discuss his plan, called power africa, a partnership between the u.s. and six african countries to double the number of people with access to electricity. >> the yearning for justice and dignity that transcends boundaries of race and class and faith and country. that's what mandela represents. >> yesterday, about 100 demonstrators clashed with police where the president was

speaking. police used stun grenades to break up the crowd. and where mandela lived for many years, a group of women gathered, singing songs and chanting for his recovery. for the first time ever, the military is taking part in san francisco's gay pride celebration. and the california air and army national guard has set up recruiting booths. with the repeal of the don't ask, don't tell policy, recruiters are looking to enlist guys. one guardsman says it was a dream to openly participate. >> now i don't have to hide that part of my life. i can just be who i am and be in the national guard and enjoy what i do with the people that i work with. >> the army national guard says it signed up 15 prospective recruits. and the air national guard says it signed up three. oakland police are looking for the person who shot and injured two teenagers near a

park. it happened just after 9:00 on sunnyside street near 96th avenue. police say a girl and a boy were standing near the park when someone shot them. both were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition. police hope anyone with information will step forward and help catch the gunmen. a woman accidentally recycled herself. this is unusual. >> i have a kind of particular situation. >> we will tell you how she managed to get stuck in a donation bin. and the hot weather continues. coming up.

city fire. >> i am in kind of a particular situation. i think i need some help. >> you could say that! firefighters made an unusual rescue after a woman got stuck in a donation bin. she had dropped off three bags of clothes at this box, but she dropped a tennis bracelet inside, so she came back to go get it. >> i came down here and kind of was looking around, looking around, looking around. and i got inside it. >> uh-huh. >> and i have -- and i can't get out. >> i kind of presume that she got a little dehydrated.

the largest gay pride parade in san francisco history. participants include the plaintiffs in the landmark supreme court proposition 8 case. alex savage is in downtown san francisco now where he says folks can't wait to celebrate. it's still kind of empty out there, but you've been talking to people, alex? >> reporter: yeah. i was just talking with some of the presidentings here. in fact, the president of dikes on bikes. they've got the bikes all set. they'll be leading the charge here down market street when the parade gets going. the president of dikes on bikes told me that really, today's celebration holds special meaning, given those supreme court rulings on same-sex marriage earlier this week. the pride parade gets going at 10:30. the barricades are up. they're limiting traffic here on market street this morning. and the parade will head west, down market, and it will wind up at 8th street. and of course, today organizers are expecting a surge in

soldier who leaked secret information to wikileaks are taking part in gay pride parades. private first class bradley manning is facing charges of providing thousands of classified documents to the wikileaks website. supporters are taking part in parades for the third consecutive year. ktvu learned that a new bart negotiation was moved from 11:00 this morning to 1:00 this afternoon. there is little time left for a deal as the labor contract expires at midnight. we talked with union leaders this morning, and they say they are not optimistic a deal will be reached. if bart workers go on strike tomorrow, 400,000 daily riders will have to scramble for some other way to get to work or school. >> it's terrible. it sucks. and i hope they work it out soon, because it's going to be a drag, especially for the 4th

of july. >> bart is increasing its offer from 1% to a 2% a year increase, spanning four years. but transit workers say they made concessions in the past and are now seeking a 15% raise over three years. we will have a live interview on bart negotiations a little later on in the newscast. here are some ideas on how to best get around in case of a bart strike. try to carpool. the monday morning and afternoon gridlock on the bay bridge will probably be even worse. try to steer clear from freeways that parallel the bart corridors, such as the bay bridge. ask your boss if you can work from home or avoid the main commute hours from 6 to 9 or 4 to 7. we have posted more information on the looming strike on ktvu.com. just click the bart strike tab. you can sign up for bart strike alerts. that way you can be first to

piedmont will be adding some as well. pittsburg police can already watch live video from cameras on their smartphones. a smaller system is going up in gilroy. much of the data from the cameras goes to an intelligence center in san francisco where analysts search for suspicious patterns and try to prevent crimes. a concord elementary school teacher is in jail, on suspicion of molesting students. police say they started investigating joseph martin, after a student claimed to have been inappropriately touched by him. he teaches 4th and 5th grade in concord. police say the alleged victims are between 11 and 17 years old. walnut creek city officials plan to release a controversial report tomorrow. about four workers at the center, it focuses on the actions of the employees after they learned that a coworker

was accused of sexually molesting teenage girls. the workers were put on administrative leave back in march after failing to report the alleged abuse to police. but they were later reinstated after an internal investigation found the group acted appropriately. a man may have died while trying to escape the heat in fremont. the 25-year-old jumped into alameda creek and then disappeared. three hours later, divers found and removed his body from the creek. the friends had recorded his jump, not knowing it would be fatal. >> somebody jumping off the bridge here into the water. a bunch of guys just trying to beat the heat. looked like he had started to do a front flip and didn't pull out of it. and he probably fit face first. >> i can't get my mind around it that he fell and never came back up. >> the victim had recently moved to fremont from florida. park rangers are closing all public access to alum rock

park today. the emergency closure is aimed to reduce the fire-related emergencies. the park will be shut down for two straight days. the hot weather has caused amtrak to enforce speed restrictions on trains. that caused delays from the central valley into oakland. trains were running as much as 50 minutes late. amtrak is encouraging passengers to check ahead for more possible delays. well, it was very mild earlier today. but i'm sure that as we're progressing through the morning, the it -- the temperatures are probably increasing. >> you're right! it's going to be another scorcher. if you're inland, it can be quite painful. we have another hot long day in store. sunset is right about 8:36. so yes, indeed, those long hot

away. another man was swept away into a creek. in international news this morning, there is both hope and concern in two places in the middle east. tens of thousands of people are in the main square in cairo to denounce morsi's government. they accuse the leader of aligning too closely to islamists. a new round of negotiations is, quote, within reach. >> prime minister netanyahu and the president both engaged constructively, carefully, seriously. we considered different approaches. and i am very hopeful that we are close to an approach that will work. >> mr. kerry would not elaborate on specifics.

but talks are aimed at establishing an independent palestinian state alongside israel. ecuador's president has our vice president, joe biden, has asked him to refuse asylum to edward snowden. they will not decide what to do until snowden actually arrives in ecuador. the u.s. and ecuador are having extradition issues due to another case. starting tomorrow, a new policy goes into effect at facebook. they will no longer place ads on pages with sexual or violent content. the move comes after several businesses pulled their ads after they were placed alongside controversial pages. facebook relies heavily on ads, which account for roughly about 85% of the company's revenue. meanwhile, if you've noticed several photos of fruit on your instagram page, it could be part of a spam attack. spammers are posting photos of

fruit along with a link promoting aing weight loss product. instagram says it has reset the passwords of users affected. starting tomorrow, student loan rates are going up. lawmakers failed to reach a deal to keep them at 3.4%. they will double now to 6.8%. the hike will cost the average student more than $2500. >> we're asking too much of our college students and we're narrowing and narrowing the field of who can be a college student in the country. >> the senate can decide to take up the topic of student loan rates again after the 4th of july holiday. asian pacific islanders are bringing up their concerned in oakland. asian pacific islanders, or api, say they make up a large number of the four million people who have family visa applications backlogged at the

because of a mix-up. a cvs pharmacist recently found a bottle of baby aspirin filled with extra strength tylenol. over the counter aspirin is usually taken every four to six hours. pharmacists say unknowingly taking that much extra strength tylenol could be dangerous. >> if they have a preexisting liver condition, you know, that could add to the toxicity and potentially harm them. >> the recall is for 81 milligram bottles of aspirin pills. if you have the recalled aspirin, stop using it and return it for a refund. the fda has pinpointed the source of a hepatitis a outbreak. they now plan to detain all shipments from the company. the pomegranate seeds were used in bags of frozen fruit blends and woodstock frozen pomegranate kernels. the outbreak has sickened 127

people in eight states, including california. a company in new mexico is getting the go-ahead to process horse meat. the valley meat company in roswell plans to begin butchering horses in just a few weeks. some call the plans cruel. the u.s. department of agriculture has approved the permit, a decision the governor cannot back. >> it's disappointing that the federal government has said that it's something that can be done. but i still don't support it. >> horse meat is not eaten in the united states. the meat will be shipped abroad to european countries such as france and belgium where demand has gone up. animal welfare groups plan to sue. some bay area ihop restaurants are serving up a deal from the past. they will celebrate the restaurant's 55 years in business by offering old

for some of those areas that will get well above 100 for today. mild at the coast. warmer around the bay. it's going to be a scorcher for our inland communities! details, coming up in just a few moments. the gay pride parade. streets in the downtown area are being closed for what could be the biggest pride parade in city history. alex savage live in san francisco with the countdown to the celebration. what's happening, alex? >> reporter: well, things are picking up down here in downtown frisk. -- san francisco. you want to take a look behind me. we're right at market and beal. you can see a lot of spectators already staking out their spots along the parade route. this is right where those floats will be taking off. they'll be headed west down market street. and this parade will wind up at 8th street. things get started at 10:30 this morning. this is video of the some of

the floats. people doing some last-minute touch-up work on their floats. organizers are expecting a huge surge in attendance for today's pride parade and celebration. it's all because of those historic supreme court decisions on same-sex marriage. they're expecting, organizers are, as many as 1.5 million people could turn out for today's pride parade and the celebration that follows, compared to an average of about a million people who come down to the celebration. today's parade will feature the four coplaintiffs from the prop 8 lawsuit. they will be marching in the parade. spectators tell me today's celebration certainly feels different. >> with prop 8, and doma, it's a huge year. it's big. >> more reason to celebrate this year? >> definitely! >> reporter: now, this is video from last year's parade. following the parade, later on this afternoon, there will be a

huge party in civic center plaza. things are already set up there for what will be a giant party. the mayor will be there. the lieutenant governor thereby there, gavin newsome, kamala harris as well. it will be a party from start to finish. police will be on hand. they will have stepped-up patrols. they'll also be using surveillance cameras to look out for anything suspicious. this live look down market street, a lot more people starting to show up. the parade starts at 10:30 this morning. alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. there are differing legal opinions on whether the supreme court will intervene and stop today's same-sex marriages. supporters of proposition 8 filed an emergency petition yesterday with justice kennedy. they accused the ninth circuit court of appeals of violating a waiting period that allows a petition for a rehearing.

uc davis constitutional law professional omar says he doubts the supreme court will halt the ceremonies. he says it would only occur if the justices are inclined to reconsider the entire case. omar estimates that the supreme court grants only one or two rehearing motions per decade. meantime, gay couples are expecting to continue to get married at san francisco's city hall. today's crowds could be bigger than yesterday's, when more than 100 couples tied the knot. >> it's a validation, i think, of our relationship. and it's the next step for us. we're thrilled. also, she's not american, so this means she can now get a green card through our relationship. >> city hall opened its doors just about five minutes ago and will close at 5:00 this evening. beginning tomorrow, weddings will be performed by appointment only. courthouse also reopen tomorrow to what is expected to be large

numbers of gay couples wanting to get married. contra costa county will open its doors at 8:00 in the morning. we're just one day away from a potential bart strike that could cripple the monday morning commute. we've learned that a final-day bargaining session has been moved from 11 this morning to 1 this afternoon. union workers are already preparing to walk off their jobs. they spent last night making picket signsful early this morning, i spoke on the phone with the president of one of the unions. >> we have been forced into this position by the district refusing to bargain. we've been at the table. we have done everything we could to avoid this step. the district -- the union was never talking strike. >> bart has raised their offer from 1% to a 2% pay hike each year for four years while easing employee contributions for pension and medical benefits. >> to avert a strike, you don't

necessarily have to reach a full agreement. you simply have to have people feeling there's enough progress being made to stay talking. >> transit workers say they made concessions in the past and they're asking for a 15% increase. sticking points range from salary to benefits to worker safety. besides bart, ac transit workers are threatening to walk off the job when their contractics spears at midnight tonight. the union says worker safety is a major concern because there was a 50% jump in work-related injuries between 2011 to 2012. ac transit officials had hoped to provide additional service in the event of a bart strike. they have about 200,000 riders a day. in the event of a strike by bart or ac transit, people are being advised to carpool or work from home. here are some of the alternatives. the bay ferry will add extra

serious condition after he suffered heat stroke on a road trip when the air-conditioning went out in his car. coming up at 9:30, we will tell you what has forest park rangers shutting down alum park today. several cooling centers have opened. in morgan hill, the senior center is now open to the public. the pleasanton senior center has also opened its doors to keep people out of the heat. and starting out with a live look there at san francisco, a few patches of fog right along the coastline and entering into the day. and we have a moderate on shore breeze in some cases. and the two combined helping us out a little this morning. temperatures are down by a few degrees in areas like fairfield as well as santa rosa. well have a look at those numbers in just a moment.

we typically need to see closer to 30 miles per hour before you begin to see that cool-down, but still, helping us out just a tad. 78 in livermore. 77 in concord. already mild to warm outside your door. yesterday, at this exact time, in the low 80's. 70's for napa. 70's for santa rosa. santa rosa is about 5 degrees cooler this morning. we're seeing a little bit of relief. by the afternoon, we're really going to continue with that heatup, especially in inland communities. we do continue with the warning for the heat. as soon as you get away from the coastline, the peninsula, you are safe territory, and just inside the bay. outside of that, our hills, valleys, mountains for sure, seeing this red or bright pink, depending on what it looks like on your screen. even inland, as you get around vallejo, hercules, martinez, it starts around san pablo.

for the inland, east bay, just as you get past the tunnel, it's going to really heat up for today. into the south bay, it starts right about sunnyville sunnyville -- sunnyvale and goes all the way through gilroy. 98 expected for sonoma today. mid 90's in san rafael. low 70's for areas along the beach. the beaches are going to be crowded once again. we do have patchy fog out there this morning. mid 80's in oakland for the afternoon. triple-digit heat for the inland, east bay. widespread 90's for the santa clara valley. gilroy, i expect you'll break a record at 104 this afternoon. 95 for redwood city. 97, san francisco. the heat wave continues all the way through tuesday. a slight dip in the temperatures on wednesday. 4th of july thursday, it's

predecessor, pope benedict xvi. he says benedict was courageously following his conscious when he quit, paved the way for francis's election as pope two weeks later. francis said that divine intervention made benedict understand the step he had to take. it is the last day on the job for antonio. the two-term mayor was first elected in 2005. he was prevented from running again due to term limits. earlier this month, he indicated he wanted to become governor some day. his successor will be sworn in later today. the real estate market is once again starting to boom. we are seeing bidding wars on homes once hard to sell. in san francisco, home prices

are up by nearly 24% from this time last year. >> the market has changed drastically. everything has a steady trend upwards as far as the sales price and also competition for buyers. >> the average home value is about where it was in 2004 before the housing market crashed. real estate agents say they are watching to see if an increase in mortgage rates slows down the housing boom. 15 hours away from a higher gas tax. it will go up 3.5 cents tomorrow. the new tax will total nearly 72 cents a gallon, the highest gas tax in the nation. the tax is going up because the amount of money coming in has gone down and because cars now get better gas mileage. gas tax money helps pay for highway and mass transit projects across the state. but there is a little bit of good news, since gas prices are falling. here's a look at the average prices to fill up right here in the bay area.

the average cost of a gallon in san jose, drivers are paying $3.94. many people are getting ready to travel for the 4th of july. according to a new report, san francisco is one of the hottest travel destinations. fisherman's wharf came in as the fourth most popular spot. union square ranked 25th. other notable destinations include the french quarter in new orleans and the louvre museum in paris. for the first time ever, the military is taking part in san francisco's gay pride celebration. the air and army national guards have set up a recruiting booth. with the reveal of the don't ask don't tell policy, recruiters are looking to enlist gays. one current guardsman says it was a dream to openly participate in this weekend's pride celebration. >> now i don't have to hide that part of my life. i can just be who i am and be in the national guard and enjoy what i do with the people that i work with. >> the army national guard says

it signed up 15 prospective recruits and the air national guard signed up three. drivers got a surprise when a large, deflating balloon fell out of the sky and right on to a freeway in carmel valley. the hot air balloon briefly came to a rest near the fast lanes of highway 56. the chp said it happened just around 8:00 last night. the balloon dropped to the road below. >> dropped right in between these two overpasses in this little area, where they just, you know, they had just enough room. it was like threading the needle. >> that man said he heard people on board cheer with relief, yelling, we made it! no injuries were reported. it is not clear what caused the balloon to land offcourse. >> that would be a little disconcerting if you're driving along the highway, seeing that. >> or if you're in the balloon. >> that might be a sight to see. >> yes.

disaster assistance for victims of the oklahoma tornadoes has now topped $25 million. about 13,000 households are applied for assistance from the state following last month's deadly series of storms. 46 people died across oklahoma. and thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed. so far, more than 500,000 cubic yards of debris have been

cleared out. three children were hurt, one critically, after being struck by lightning at a summer camp in indianapolis. the boys and one girl were standing in an open field when they were struck by the lightning. a woman says it wasn't even raining at the time. another nfl player has been arrested, this time on weapons charges, after being involved with a police chase. police say colts safety joe lefeged was riding in a car. when the car stopped, the driver took off running. they face firearms charges and charges of having an open container of alcohol. the driver has not been found. we'll send it over to rosemary. a lot of changes coming up this day as it gets hotter and hotter. >> yes. those temperatures are already climbing. i'm beginning to see low-level cooling move in.

that's good news. afternoon temperatures expected to be right about what we felt yesterday. temperatures at this hour, slightly cooler. i'm seeing an onshore breeze all the way through the delta. some areas, as much as five degrees cooler than what we were before. santa rosa, i'm talking about you. expect another warm day, 80 degrees, under mostly clear skies. if you're just sitting there in the open sun, it's going to feel warm. it's going to get warmer by the second half of the game. 85 in store for this afternoon. low 90's for fremont as well as mountain view. triple-digit heat once again for inland communities. 100 degrees for santa rosa. 106 in antioch. triple-digit heat expected out at the alameda county fair. if you just don't like the heat, the next few days may not be good. little change in the forecast for tomorrow, tuesday. wednesday, we finally begin to

a million and a half people could take part in today's celebration, because of those historic supreme court rulings on gay marriage earlier this week. organizers expect 1.5 million people possibly. normally they see right around a million or so people. this is video from last year's parade we're gonna show you here. to celebrate those historic supreme court decisions, today's parade will be featuring the four coplaintiffs from the prop 8 case that went all the way to the supreme court. they will be marching in the parade. the parade will be followed by a giant celebration at civic center plaza. for some people, this will be an emotional celebration. >> with the two rulings from the u.s. supreme court, the elation, i think -- i'm sorry. i'm getting choked up. the elation that everybody feels is just amazing! it's so -- we're all -- i mean, every year, we're very happy, very proud of who we are. but this year, we're a couple steps closer.

>> reporter: so here's some video of the floats. they're parked just off market street right now, in position for things to get started. people putting some of the finishing touches on right now. security also will be an issue today with the large crowds expected. police will have a strong presence out here, both uniformed officers, undercover officers, and also a series of surveillance cameras that will be monitored to keep an eye on the crowds today. we'll bring you back out here to a live picture on market street. sidewalks filled with people, everybody set to celebrate pride here in san francisco. again, they are expecting record crowds out here today. >> alex, thank you. new york is also expecting a huge pride parade today. one of the grand marshals will be edith windsor, who just won her challenge of the defense of marriage act before the supreme court. new york was home to the first

pride march 44 years ago. it was created in remembrance of the riots of the stonewall inn. yesterday they launched a website promoting lgbt tourist attractions. supporters of the army soldier who leaked information to wikileaks are taking part in gay pride parades throughout the country. bradley manning is on trial. supporters within the lgbt community are taking part in parades in new york, chicago, seattle, and in san francisco today for the third consecutive year. 90 minutes ago, a bart spokesman told us a final bargaining session has been moved from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. there is little time left for a deal. we also spoke to a union president this morning. she told us she is pessimistic that a deal will be reached. if bart workers go on strike

tomorrow, 400,000 daily riders will have to scramble for some other way to get to work or school. >> it's terrible, you know. it sucks. and i hope they work it out soon, because it's going to be a drag, especially for the 4th of july. >> bart is increasing its offer from 1% to a 2% a year increase in salary for four years. but transit workers say they made concessions in the past and are now seeking a 15% raise over the next three years. 5% a year. here are some ideas on how best to get around in case of a bart strike. try to carpool. the monday morning and afternoon gridlock on the bay bridge will probably be even worse. if you are driving, try to steer clear from freeways that parallel the bart corridors such as the bay bridge. if possible, ask your boss if you can work from home. muni, samtrans and the san francisco bay ferry will add extra service tomorrow.

enforcement, no street sweeping and no animal control. rec centers and park services will be closed along with libraries and city pools will be closed. that could be tough when it could be the hottest day of the year. we will have coverage of the situation as workers say they'll be making plans for the strike later today. if you ever think that you might be being watched, you could be if you're in certain areas of the bay area. there are license plate cameras that record every car that passes through town. the piedmont also has cameras. richmond police have 42 cameras. a smaller system is going up in gilroy. the bay area news group reports that much of the data from the cameras go easy to an intelligence center in san francisco where analysts search for suspicious patterns and try to prevent crimes. police say they've arrested a man who kidnapped the mother of a child at gun point.

officers say the 23-year-old daniel medina pulled a gun on a woman and held her against his will. he allegedly dragged her by her hair, pistol whipped her, and used the gun to threaten two men who tried to help. police were able to take him into custody and help the woman. a man may have died while trying to escape the heat in fremont. the 25-year-old jumped from a train trestle in alameda creek, then disappeared. three hours later, divers found and removed his body from the creek. his friends had recorded his jump, not knowing it would be fatal, and they shared that video with police. >> somebody jumping off the bridge into the water. a bunch of guys just trying to beat the heat. looked like he had started to do a front flip and didn't pull out of it, probably hit face first. >> i can't wrap my mind around it, that he fell and never came

back up. park rangers are closing all public access to alum rock park due to the hot weather and increased fire danger. the emergency closure aims to reduce the potential for fire- related emergencies. alum rock park is usually closed on monday, so that means it will be shut down for two days straight. people have been finding other ways to stay cool. yesterday, about 10,000 people cooled off at the water world in concord. park officials say that's double the usual attendance. and close to full capacity. an at the brentwood farmers market, the big seller was ice cold water. >> you notice i've got this nice towel behind my neck. that kind of keeps me chilled and cool and looking good. absolutely! >> contra costa firefighters say that they have been getting more calls about heat strokes than usual, so they are reminding people to make sure

you stay hydrated. and hot weather has caused amtrak to enforce speed restrictions on their planes. some trains were running as much as 50 minutes late. amtrak is encouraging passengers to check ahead for more possible delays. and we begin with a live look over the oakland estuary. maybe you're making about heading out to lake merritt for the afternoon. it's going to be another warm one and a great day to head towards the water. there you see san francisco in the backdrop. patches of fog along the coastline. an onshore breeze, helping to shave off a few degrees this morning. with that said, another heatup expected for the inland communities. and the heat warning continues through tuesday, where temperatures will reach 105, perhaps even 107 degrees today,

monday and tuesday. those are going to be the hottest days. then we begin a gradual cool- down after that. the risk of heat exhaustion, even the possibility of heat stroke, definitely a possibility. north bay valleys, as well as our hills, lasting through tuesday. just inside the bay, communities looking good, along the peninsula and coast. not with a heat warning, but everybody else include in that. ridge of high pressure is going to be strengthening over the course of the next day or two. and i do expect you'll see some of those hottest temperatures come monday and tuesday. but, again, this morning, temperatures down just a bit. we've got a little bit of patchy fog along the coastline. we're seeing an onshore breeze moving in. santa rosa, 5 degrees cooler than yesterday at this hour. in any case, a big warm-up in store for the afternoon. this high pressure also dragging in some moisture. look at southern california, seeing clouds, even a little bit of green popping up. the sierra, a possibility of

thunderstorms lasting today, tomorrow, perhaps even into 4th of july. and i'm going to show you, over the next couple of day, how we see moisture pull our way. here we are today, fog along the coastline. now into monday afternoon. we do have moisture over the sierra. clouds over the bay area. so mid and high-level clouds, definitely a possibility for tomorrow. as we get into tuesday, notice some of this moisture trying to work its way up along the coastline. so we'll be tracking that between now and then. possibility of a few weak thunderstorms coming our way, at least for our hills, monday and tuesday. for today, 77 in concord already. 88 in antioch. this is the hottest spot on this map. the farther inland you go, it's already heating up. meanwhile, around the bay, widespread 60's. 70 in hayward. 104 for clear lake. 80 in sausalito. definitely a change, depending

morning into the hudson river, near new york city's 79th street. i don't know if we can take away the lower banner, but you can see there, it's kind of a cloudy day, not sure what the weather conditions were like. the landing brings back memories of the danville pilot who safely landed a plane on that river. we right now are monitoring this situation. no word yet on what caused the morning's troubles with that helicopter but we will stay on this and bring you an update later on in the day. and we go overseas to international news. there is both hope and concern in two places in the middle east. tens of thousands of people are at the main scare in cairo. they accuse egypt's first freely elected leader of aligning too closely to islamic

fundamentalists. secretary kerry says he narrowed the gap between israel and the palestinians, so much so that he says a new round of negotiations is, quote, within reach. >> prime minister netanyahu and the president both engaged constructively, carefully, seriously. we considered different approaches. and i am very hopeful that we are close to an approach that will work. >> kerry could not elaborate on the specifics. but talks are aimed at establishing an independent palestinian state alongside israel as part of a final peace plan. ecuador's president says our vice president, joe biden, has asked him to refuse asylum to nsa leaker edward snowden. the president says he will not decide what to do until snowden actually arrives in ecuador. ecuador is trying to get the

u.s. to expedite two bankers living in the u.s. who were convicted of crimes in ecuador. san francisco police say two men are in custody after a shooting on a busy downtown street yesterday afternoon. it all happened just after 5:00 on market street near 6th. police say there were multiple gunshots. a man if his 20's was hit in the head by shrapnel and treated in the hospital. police arrested two men. they say they are not sure whether the victim was the intended target. oakland police are looking for the person who shot and injured who teenagers near a park last night on sunnyside street near 96th avenue. police say a girl and boy were standing near the park when someone shot them. both were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition now. police hope anyone with information will step forward and help catch the shooter. a concord elementary school teacher is in jail on suspicious of molesting

students. martin was taken into custody at his concord home. police say they started investigating martin after a student claimed to have been inappropriately touched by him. he teaches fourth and fifth grade in concord. police say the alleged victims are between 11 and 17 years old. a center -- a report focuses on the actions of employees after a worker was accused of sexually abusing girls. the workers were later reinstated. college students might need to get a second summer job. starting tomorrow, student loan rates are going up. congressional lawmakers failed to reach a deal. a congressional committee estimates the hike will cost

the average student more than $2500. >> we're asking too much of our college students and we're narrowing the field of who can be a college student in the country. >> the senate can decide to take up the topic of student loan rates again after the 4th of july hold. facebook will no longer place ads on pages with sexual or violent content. facebook relies heavily on ads, which account for roughly 85% of the company's revenue. meanwhile, if you've noticed several photos of fruit on your instagram page, it could be part of a spam attack. spammers have been posting photos of fruit, people's profile, along with a link promoting a weight loss product. instagram says it has reset the passwords of users affected.

the fda says a recent hepatitis outbreak likely came from a shipment of pomegranate seeds from a turkish company. the seeds were used in bags of frozen fruit blends and woodstock frozen organic pomegranate kernels. news you don't often see. an exotic pet that turned loose and bounced around a texas town. he's now back home. officers in grand prairie, texas, were called to help corral a one-year-old wallaby. he hopped away. police caught him on a neighbor's porch about a mile away. animal control is trying to decide whether it is legal to own one in that town, but there's no ordinance saying they cannot be kept as pets. what the supreme court has decided surrounding the prop 8

we have breaking news we want to share with you. we are just getting word that the supreme court has rejected the emergency petition to stop this weekend's same-sex marriages. that means that weddings will continue at san francisco's city hall today. you might recall that supporters of prop 8 had asked justice anthony kennedy to block the weekend marriages, saying that the appellate court ignored a 25-day waiting period that allows the losing side in a supreme court case to petition for a rehearing.

of course, we will be getting more information and bringing it to you. >> time now is 9:54. here's a look at other top stories. we are about 35 minutes from the start of the gay pride parade in san francisco. police have been staking out the best viewing spots for the event all morning long. organizers say attendance at the parade could reach 1.5 million people. park rangers are closing all public access to alum rock park today due to hot weather and increased fire danger. the park is usually closed on mondays, so that means it will be shut down for the next two days. we are one day away from a potential bart strike that could cripple the monday morning commute. a mediator is trying to set up one last bargaining session for this morning before the contract expired. sticking points range from salary to benefits and worker safety. many muni riders will have to dig a little deeper starting tomorrow. the price for an adult fast pass will increase $2 to $76.

muni adult passes will also increase. seniors and youth passes will go up by $1. muni says the higher fees are based on inflation rates. napa county is trying to get people to think twice about drinking sugary drinks. the campaign aims to show how much sugar is in popular drinks. related games, giveaways and contests for kids are planned for july 16 at the napa farmers market. napa county says sugary drinks make up nearly half of added sugar in americans' diets. fans honored military appreciation night at the quakes' game. the quakes battled the los angeles galaxy. there was that reunion right before the soccer match. this was a classic. the quakes would score twice in
