3:03 pm
is how he makes it all fun. >> ready, straighten the legs, reach up, only two out of three die usually. [laughter] >> i thought he was amazing. >> i feel mind, body spiritual connection. dr. oz: what are the long term benefits? >> your body becomes more sensitive. your diet naturally changes into something that is better for you. the people that you hang out naturally shift into a way that's kind of more positive. dr. oz: would i want to do it again? >> yes! dr. oz: come back to the studio with me and let's teach everyone how to do this. [cheers and applause] dr. oz: please welcome steve ross. this is what he looks like in the flesh. let's go with the most basic idea that you shared with me in the very beginning. fundamentally, above all else, yoga is about happiness. >> right. dr. oz: it's so different from what i hear people say about
3:04 pm
yoga. >> it brings you to a stage of joy and happiness, most people practice it, to despair and misery. why do you do yoga? why do you do anything? for happiness, for joy. if you approach yoga in that same way, that's what you get which is happy. dr. oz: why is it do you think that we have lost some of that flavor that yoga originally had in the east when it came to this country? it's becoming increasingly popular. i see folks hurting themselves, beating themselves up. they're mad because they're not loser than the person next to them. >> it's part of the culture. it's competitive in nature and everything. so people have a tendency to push themselves too hard and that stuff. they miss the fun of it, the whole point is to have fun. dr. oz: you tell bad jokes in yoga? >> not always, not just in yoga. i play hip-hop music in yoga to make it more fun. imagine dancing without any music.
3:05 pm
it just doesn't make any sense. for me, that's how yoga is, too. dr. oz: steve emphasized to me year all yogis. inside, it's all there whether we know it or not. >> the normalerson looks for t they look in stat you and relationships and possessions, et cetera. yogis look at it from where it is. yoga is really going directly to your own happiness which is inside you already. everybody's inherent nature is happy. dr. oz: in addition to the happy moments that we have shared together, there was a scary moment as i witnessed steve and you may not realize this, but he survived a terrorist attack in mumbai in 2008. he barricaded himself in a hotel room for a couple of days. >> that was a smart thing to do, yes. dr. oz: get out of the gunfire. how did yoga get you through that ordeal? >> i'm a long time meditator. after the initial intense fear because i looked down and i saw the guys shooting into the
3:06 pm
lobby of the hotel, which is a little intense, i put a couch up against the door and i -- it kind of hit me, ok, this is my situation. i can't climb down because i'm too high up. i can't go out there obviously. all i can do is accept what is. as soon as i kind of did that, all the fear went out and i felt very peaceful and i felt kind of insulated in this peaceful presence. that lasted for actually a couple weeks afterwards. it ended up being a really interesting experience. i was in that room with two other people and we were telling jokes and i did yoga and we just hung out. it was kind of a really interesting moment. dr. oz: how did you get rescued? >> after a long series of false alarms, the black cat commandos from india came and when you open the door, they had their guns on you. you're like this and the guy looked at me and said you're safe now! [laughter] >> no problem, you are safe! i said thank you very much!
3:07 pm
dr. oz: obviously, it was a terrible crisis that you helped weather with yoga. i do this in surgery. when i am really tapped out, coping with difficult surgeries with maybe outcomes i didn't want. this is true of everybody, bills, kids, spouses, work, the opportunity to find a tool like yoga so center you and allow you to find happiness on the inside is to me, unparalleled. i think it's the big message i want to give to our audience. it's why i asked you to come visit. i never had you come on before. i feel so many of us lack that happiness. it's aalways about there. this is a path to find it. you put those five women through a yoga boot camp. >> i'm sorry, by the way. dr. oz: despite that, they came back to join us. they are all here for a special class. [applause] dr. oz: welcome! i know that was very tough to have steve do that to you and i
3:08 pm
apologize on his behalf. >> so i do. dr. oz: was it expected, the yoga? >> i didn't think yoga was to me. when i see photos of people doing yoga poses, i thought they were intimidated and surely they must have been practicing for years. it's nice to know you can start your yoga practice at any age. dr. oz: jennifer, you are the fitness expert. were you worried you wouldn't get enough of an arow i think workout? >> i am a former gymnast. i thought yoga was the opposite of a hard work, something you did if you wanted to relax. i have been doing it for six months. it's actually as hard if not harder than any gymnastics routine i have ever done. dr. oz: it can be hard. it can be easy. it can be where you need it to be, which is part of the questions here. you got two poses, steve, you say are the foundation of starting yoga. do nothing else today, folks, learn these two poses, it's that simple. e have steve's whole workout at my house on doctoroz.com. you can match up the music, it's a lot of fun. these are the two fundamental
3:09 pm
poses. the first one is called upward facing dog. >> don't do this after a heavy meal unless you want to. the first thing you do is come down on the floor like this, palms are down by your shoulders. you straighten the arms, you roll on to the tops of your feet. knees are off the floor. if this is too painful for some people, it's too much on their low back, you can bring the knees down or bend the arms or walk the hands farther out. generally you want them kind of under the shoulders. if you do this, adjust you into a way that opens your spine up. dr. oz: the second spine is opposite, downward dog. >> you tuck the toes under and you puck back. when you're in the downward dog like this, you want to kind of flatten the low back. your arms are straight. you want to have all of the fingers pushed down, palms pushed down. dr. oz: is this the perfect pose? >> you're doing it perfectly, of course. to modify this, if you want to make it a little easier, you can bend the knees slightly
3:10 pm
like that, but generally you want to have the legs straight if you want to get the maximum stretch and you push the heels down. that may or may not happen depending on your flexibility. dr. oz: how about the breathing, is that critical? >> breathe deep and slow in all yoga posture. generally when you move from one posture to another, you synchronize it with the breath. dr. oz: i love the fact that it allows me to occupy my mind and my body. my mind ultimately becomes free to meditate which is why i think these two two poses, you'll be happy for it. how long do we do each move? >> 25 minutes. i'm just kidding. you do maybe a minute each. dr. oz: come on up. when we come back, i want you to think carefully before you reach for your next ibuprofen. a yoga pose can solve your headache problem and there is more than that, too. find out what it is next. >> coming up -- dr. oz: you trust that? >> i definitely do. >> something is wrong with you. >> yoga poses to cure what
3:11 pm
3:13 pm
3:14 pm
helps ease are tension headaches. how often do these afflict you? >> two times a week. a take a lot of over-the-counter medicine. i would like something more natural so i don't have to take as much medicine. dr. oz: do you trust that face? >> i do. >> something is wrong with you. >> i would say a forward bend is good, feet hip distance apart, hinge from the hips and hang forward. the main thing is to relax your neck as much as possible. that will improve the blood flow, stretch the back of the body. when all of the tension comes out of the back, especially the back of the neck, then the increased circulation should help or make it much worse. i'm not sure which. you want to get the head to just move, relax, and hang out there for a minute or two. dr. oz: you do it for a minute? >> you can do it for a minute. i do it for longer, but i'm weird. dr. oz: make it better or worse? >> no, feels good.
3:15 pm
dr. oz: for muscle aches and pains, it makes sense. as a surgeon, i'm over the table like this. it's a procedure i do because it relaxes the back of my neck. >> thank you very much. dr. oz: lower back pain, how are you? >> good. dr. oz: that's the cause of your lower back pain? >> i'm a busy mom. i'm constantly lifting bending. at t e day, i get a lot of back pain, lower back. dr. oz: almost everyone in this country will have back pain. there must have been a solution thousands of years old for this. >> people who have bad back pain or slipped disks shouldn't do too much forward bending which unfortunately they do when they left. backward bending is very healing for that. we can show you the cobra. dr. oz: the crow bra! sounds cool. there has been a lot of research for decades how they help with pain. >> you lie on your stomach, bring your palms down. it's similar to the upward dog but easier. you keep the legs on the floor and you just push the upper body up. you notice extreme pain in the low back, no, it shouldn't be extreme.
3:16 pm
just a nice tension in the low back. you just kind of hang out there and relax and breathe slow and deep and aim the breath into your low back. dr. oz: do we have to straighten the arms the whole way? >> you don't have to. you can walk out farther or keep them a little bit bent. you want to breathe slow and deep, especially into that area that you're trying to stretch, which is the low back. if you keep doing back bends like this, not only does it help back problems, but it gets, it kind of stimulates your whole system. you feel more energetic. dr. oz: how does that feel for you? >> i feel like a new person. dr. oz: it's cool, isn't it. >> i can start cleaning. dr. oz: you can start cleaning, i love that. one of the big issues, you have to stay in these poses for a minute, two minutes. a lot will do it for five seconds. >> it's a great conversation starter at the line in the bank, pop into this, no one will bother you. dr. oz: good luck to you. the third condition that yoga helps. stephanie has tight hips.
3:17 pm
how would you describe your hips? are they super tight, medium tight? >> they can get pretty tight. it depends on how long i sit. it makes me feel like an old lady. i'm not an old lady. dr. oz: no, you're not, that i can tell. show us a pose that can help us with our hips. ou can tell how asymmetrical we are. we do one side today, you compare to the other side, a different world. >> the pigeon pose is very simple. you bend the front leg like that and the back leg is straight back. roll on the top of the back thigh. the knee is out to the side a little bit. if you're very flexible, the foot comes up like that. for most people it's down here, the opposite hip. you bring the upper body down. keep the knee out to the side and you hang out there. it's a great way to watch tv. dr. oz: meet people. has anyone ever broken anything doing this? >> no, they have broken records, that's about it. this i usually hold three to five minutes if you want a
3:18 pm
deep, deep stretch. generally a couple minutes. dr. oz: if folks can't get into this pose, is there an easier version? >> yeah, there is an easier version which is interesting looking. you bend your back and cross one leg over the other and reach underneath and pull the knee in that way. it works the hip, but less tension on the knee. so for people that have knee problems or just feel really lazy and want to look up at the ceiling, this is fantastic. dr. oz: all right. while steve does that, you relax, up next, can yoga help you lose weight? steve says yes and he has the steps to take those pounds off. stay with us. [cheers and applause] >> up next, she went from a size 16 to a size two. >> 47 pounds. >> the two-step yoga plan to promote weight loss. dr. oz: it helps balance your mind. i don't want you to be afraid to be loud and proud. >> sing and shed pounds? it can happen.

body? >> i started yoga eight years ago and it helped me lengthen, strengthen, and tone my body. it was also really great for stress. it helped me calm and center my mind. like steve said, find the happiness i never experienced before. it did so much for me, i only hope my story inspires others to try yoga, too, no matter what their shape or size. i was a size 16 when i started. it brought me down to a size two which was 47 pounds. dr. oz: you're kidding me! this is before and after! that is wonderful! you stop stressing out by dropping that many sizes of clothing, this is part of the solution. there is a two-step process. is it the two step pardon important? >> there is a two-step snake, if you get bit, two steps to live. dr. oz: the first part is stand strong like a tree. we should start our day this way. what is it?
3:23 pm
>> it's a balancing posture tree pose. two ways to do it. one way is bring the sole of the foot like that, the ball of the foot to the knee, that's the general way. dr. oz: i should point one thing out. match of what steve does is a cleansing from the inside. i know that you start your morning with water with lemon. >> and tequila. that seems to take the edge off. dr. oz: why water and lemon? >> lemon is supposed to be very detoxing for the liver. it makes the water taste better and you can drink a large amount, a detoxing affect. dr. oz: that is part of so many bits of ancient wisdom and the tree pose. >> yes. an easier variation would be down here like that, just to balance. the normal variation, whatever normal means, is like this. another variation, you can bring it like that. the hands can be here or above like dr. oz is doing. dr. oz: you taught me to focus on a point in front of me.
3:24 pm
if you learn balance physically, it will help balance your mind. >> exactly. dr. oz: see how balanced i am, steve, because of you. [applause] dr. oz: the proper breathing brings down the stress that you feel. when you don't have the stress hormones, you don't gain belly fat. >> right. dr. oz: the second step that steve has got is chanting. chanting can take many forms. the best is if you chant, you can't eat at the same time. right? so these chants that we're going to do today are an example. you can use hymnals, affirmations. i don't want you to be afraid to be loud and proud. that's what we're doing right now. steve, he is a musician, by the way. he has played in a lot of -- >> crazy bands. dr. oz: take it away. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪
