well, if not, guess what. it's all reversible. it really is. the culprit, it turns out, is sugar. it may be making you look older than you really are. our nutritionist is here with simple solutions to take years off your face. brooke, welcome. >> thank you for having me. [applause] dr. oz: why do you feel so passionately that sugar is the culprit here? >> sugar is the enemy. it affects your waistline and your face. dr. oz: lines, wrinkles, isn't that a natural part of aging? >> it is natural, but it's preventable. it doesn't have to happen as quickly as it is. too much sugar leads to premature aging. dr. oz: are we getting too much sugar in our lives? three questions i want you to ask yourself to find out if ugar my be aging you prematurely, do you eat carbs or sweets when you're in a bad mood? i hear yes out of honest folks. do you need sugar in your

coffee to get you through the date? people who are awake are saying yes. thirdly, you look for something sweet to eat in the afternoon? so if you answered yes to any of these questions, frankly, sugar my be making you look older. if i can, let's show the folks why we believe sugar is a problem for the appearance of your skin, especially on your face. so this is a little model that i built out. the real conversation here comes back to what sugar is doing to your body. so, in this model, this pizza dough here is your skin. it's on top. underneath the skin supporting the skin, making it like a trampoline are the collagen tubes. do you see them here? they're supposed to be here. below them is yellow. that yellow stuff is sugar. the sugar can sometimes, if you got too much of it in your body, bathe those collagen fibers, bathe the elastic material beneath your skin. my hands are sugar here. without the collagen, you don't have the skin that needs to be

able to bounce back. what is the sugar doing? the sugar is actually destroying these tubes, literally binding them together so they no longer act the same way. as that happens, guess what happens, see the dimple that starts to occur on top. it doesn't stop. the more sugar you have, the more you take these tubes and mess them up and the more you mess these up, the more these deficits become cracks, lines, wrinkles. they make the undereye bags that much deeper and change the color. they dry out your skin so it no longer has the ability to keep that rosie color you want it to have. that's what we think is inevitable with aging. i'm here to say it is not true. so what can you do about the sugar? now that we have actually established why it's dangerous, it's destroying these tubes supporting your skin, how can we reverse that? >> take out all of the harmful sugars in your diet. we need to remove them entirely. what i ask for people to do on our diet is to remove sugar for three days, all sugars, 72 hours, it's a little tough.

we gradually get to add it back in. by the end of those three days, you'll be amazed of what tastes sweeter, an onion or raw almond has natural sweetness to it. dr. oz: let's show folks what we're talking about. these are the specific sugars you tell us to eliminate. i recommend these foods to people all the time. diaries, ple to eat healthy fruits and alcohol is associated with living longer. >> these are healthy sugars. in the three days, we're removing all sugars. i want your palate to start back at zero. we're starting at square one here. we're removing dairy, fruit, grains and red wine or any kind of alcohol. so we start at square one by the time we hit day four. dr. oz: what can you eat? you are taking out the healthy stuff we bragged about in the show? >> you can eat proteins, not animal protein, beans, nuts, will he arguments, chicken, shell fish. we can eat tons of vegetables

nd spice it up for extra flavor. dr. oz: all of the healthy things, what will they look like in three days? >> after those three days, you'll see a reduction in the undereye circles that we just talked about. you'll see a reduction in that dry skin. you're going see some major changes in puffiness in three days. >> is that a reasonable tradeoff, folks? i know three days of not having sugar is going to be a challenge for a lot of folks. day four, what does the world like for people? they look better in the mirror. how are they going to feel? >> they're going to be feeling a little better by day four. we add back in our healthy sugars, not all at once, a little at a time. we can have the red wine, we can toast to looking younger. dr. oz: it's a four-week program. so we start with three days of cutting out all the sugar including the sugars that come with healthy foods.

then you say in week one, you have the wine up here, thank you very much. the glass of wine in the first week. what else do we add back? >> we can have some fruit already. dr. oz: you have an apple. >> an applele a day keeps the durham away. they have anti-aging benefits. dr. oz: is that the most important food for us to have? >> an apple a day, absolutely, there is a reason why the expression is going on. dr. oz: if people start eating more apples, will that help your skin appearance? >> absolutely. dr. oz: that we can do. what else do we have? >> some dairy. dr. oz: any kind? >> unflavored dairy products. dr. oz: real dairy. the high fiber crackers. >> to give you the crunch factor and satisfy you during your meals. dr. oz: week one, add all of these back and sort of treading water by now. how are you going to look differently? >> by the end of week one, you

might see that supple. you might be needing less moisturizer at this point. you see gradual small differences, at the end of the four weeks, it will add up. dr. oz: you add back some of the foods that you have. walk me through it. >> we get some more fruit. add on to that apple. you can do some berries, half a grapefruit. dr. oz: do you eat an apple every day? >> every day. dr. oz: i'm going to start doing that. >> yeah. dr. oz: one of my daughters, the third daughter always have apples, always. she is young still. her skin is the best in the family. >> it's those anti-oxidants. it's the fiber and an apple is naturally low in sugar. dr. oz: you get dairy back. >> yes. dr. oz: week three. >> week three is the fun week. we increase our wine. dr. oz: how much wine do you drink a week? >> i drink around three to four glasses a week of red wine. dr. oz: three glasses of wine. if you don't look good, at least you won't be able to tell the difference. >> exactly.

the simple solution is in your drugstore. what can folks do to get a whiter smile? >> that's exactly right. every decade we get older, our teeth darken one to two shades. we know that the professional whitening really is the great place to start, but it gets expensive. the drugstore really has some great choices for us today. from toothpaste to mouthwash, whitening strips, light and heat devices are now hitting the market where we're taking professional whitening elements and now the consumer has that. dr. oz: how long does it take to get the benefit, a week, month, a year? >> it depends on the product. you can start seeing changes all the way starting at two to three days all the way to a couple of months really depending on the delivery system and depending on the concentration of the jell. we say it's all about contact time. so i spend a lot of my life with these things. that jell has to adhere to the teeth and people have to use it

shorter period of time period of time. >> after i put the strip on, how long before i can eat or trink something? >> the strips stay on for a good 25, 30 minutes. then it's good not to have anything stainy, anything that would stain a white shirt, coffee, red wine, tea, we stay away from when you're doing your whitening procedures. we might need to move you over to white wine. it's those red stain tan inmolecules. >> how are you? >> i'm fine. dr. oz: she is a last-minute planner. she has two days, what's happening in two days? >> i have a family reunion. my sister's teeth are always whiter than mine. i don't drink coffee. i want mine to pop to look better. dr. oz: she wants them to pop. >> i love that, too, because that's what everybody wants. they really do. can you get it done a little bit quicker? so a big breakthrough is taking
