francisco and we saw that picture. the san mateo bridge. eastbound is not all that bad. it is slow getting out to 880. in san francisco the back up has improved. it was backed up to 280. as you saw with our camera on city streets, it has been slow getting to the bridge as we go back to news chopper 2. this is the slow traffic. cars from the financial district trying to get up on the streets. ben, our photographer in the car is taking a long time to get on to the bridge. first street, harrison street. here is ben. i think she coming up on the ferry building all. taking him a while -- ferry building. taking him a while. if you want to make sure you know it will be heavy.

back to you. 100 people are at the plaza in san francisco showing support for striking bart workers. ktvu's david stevenson talked to representatives. she live from -- he is live from san francisco. >> reporter: organizers expected 200 people for this. we are seeing half that number here. the people include bart workers but it is also a number of union members from other industries. this caps the first day of a bart strike that sent 400,000 in search of alternative transportation. they are still far apart on issues. we have seen positive and negative reaction from observers here. here you can see them chanting. bart workers are prepared to be out here for as long as it takes to get what they want. >> i am hoping that we could

[ laughter ] >> reporter: a marketing consultant she counts on bart to get to work every day. >> she my home office assistant. >> she decided telecommuting was her best alternative. >> i let my manager know i would be working from home indefinitely. >> reporter: instead of wasting time on the roads technology is lowing people to be in two places at once. >> i think most of our teams are doing what they need to do in the bay area. >> reporter: he is a regular bart rider. like many of his employees he is working out of his home. she worries she will feel the

impact after the strike. >> i hoke it works out -- i hope it works out. my fear is if they give in it will cost me. >> eric rasmussen says people said they will do wherve it takes to -- whatever it takes to stay off the roads. ferry services are adding more boats to help people get around. ktvu's paul chambers jumped on the ferry before his first report at 5:00 p.m. back live to paul. how much progress have you made? >> reporter: we decided to give you a different look. inside the wheelhouse. he let us come along for the ride. we just docked here. you can see there are people getting off of the boat. the commute this morning was commute but there are tons of people. this is because it is day one of the bart strike.

san francisco ferry systems ran three three additional vessels. that is three times more than a normal day and they exsteppedded hours -- extended hours. one passenger road bart last night and staid in san francisco to make his class this morning. he had to take the ferry home because otherwise he would have been stranded. >> the people that come across the bay didn't come to class today. most were kids from the city. >> reporter: as long as the strike lasts they will run the system this way except for 4th of july when they will operate on a holiday schedule. we will bring you the latest. we will take the ferry back across into san francisco. the line is long right now. all those people will get on

the boat with us and take the ferry ride back with you and show you what is going on once we get there. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. it is not just bart workers on the picket line today. thousands of city workers in oakland are holding a one day strike. they blocked a busy intersection in front of city hall. it involves 2500 city workers from six different unis. they are up-- unions. they are upset furloughs cut their pay by 25% over the past 5 years. police, fire and other emergency workers are not taking part in the strike. public works, parks and recb, libraries and parking enforcement are involved. a tragedy on the fire line

traffic is still very slow leaving san francisco, 101 on to 80. slow traffic although it is improving on 101. on city streets taking a long time for you to drive. we had one of our photographs driving along 46 minutes now coming up from the embarcadero. we want to show you traffic is going to be okay on the golden gate bridge. not a bad option. you will be going a long way around. 101 is not too bad. back to the studio. developing news out of arizona. we are learning more about the deaths of 19 elite firefighters

who were all trapped in the flames of a fast moving wildfire. this afternoon people lined roads to pay their respects as the bodies of the firefighters were transported and authorities released the names of those killed. 14 were in their 20s, including one who was the son of a los angeles fire captain. so far the yarnell hill fire burned 8300 acres and forced the evacuation of families, pets and live stock. this is the home base for the hot shot team that lost 19 members. >> reporter: this is station 7 here in prescott. this is where all of the firefighters who were members of the hot shot crew would gather as they fought the toughest fires in the area. they did not come home last night and all afternoon we have ben watching -- been watching

news chopper 2 got these pictures before 6:00 a.m. and the toll plaza was packed. thousands of people got behind the wheels and others jumped into a stranger's car. at times we saw more cars than riders. >> i am hoping to take a different route and the ferry back. >> reporter: on the freeway, the approach to the bay bridge was still stacked up. he didn't want to ride the roads. he was second in line for a fertee san francisco. he -- ferry to san francisco. >> first time taking the ferry. >> reporter: it wasn't long before a line formed that ferries as well and more lines as people waiting for a.c. transit buses. >> text my boss, going to be late. >> 62 minute wait for the next
