castaneda in the traffic center. >> reporter: it is improving. a lot of people this afternoon started leaving very early. what is not good is we saw our photographer ben cruz driving on city streets trying to get to the bridge. what has improved. north bound 101 the slow traffic begins aroundverment street. that is not -- aroundverment street. that is not bad. -- around vermont street. that is not as bad. the heaviest commute this afternoon was in the 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. hour. one last thing i want to mention, this morning's commute was very slow. we are expecting the same thing

tomorrow. got slow at 5:30. >> thank you. for those hoping for commute relief tomorrow, there are no signs to end the strike. ktvu's ken pritchett is monitoring the situations. any word from either side on whether there are talks planned? >> reporter: no. we are in front of the caltrans building here. this was neutral ground last night when they met to try to hammer out a deal. they failed and they are not here today. they did not meet at all. >> reporter: day one of the strike was filled with chants, rallies, this one with hundreds gathered in oakland. what is missing? negotiations. >> we gave them new proposals yesterday and they gave us nothing new yesterday.

>> the union negotiator said she gathered talks ve been suspected. >> we told them all he has to do is to call us and we will meet. >> reporter: both sides blame the other for not meeting and not willing to negotiate or make an offer. >> they have a substantial proposal on the table. one that we increased saturday. that they have yet to respond to. >> we are asking for a fair wage increase. because workers had a zero increase in four years. >> the union says bart's offer is too small. bart says it doubled its original offer to 8% over four years. what they agree on is say this is not what they wanted. >> we believe the strike is necessary and we hope we could get our people back to work.

>> the unions say they are ready tolk when a new offer is presented. bart says they are ready to talk right now. bart says there is nothing new this evening. no talks planned today. ken pritchett, ktvu channel 2 news. a.c. transit says some of the routes saw double the usual number of passengers as people look to get around without bart. a.c. transit added buses to help. dozens of staffers volunteered to help out but a.c. transit is also dealing with their own labor dispute that has some worried. >> we don't know if a.c. transit is going to strike. >> a.c. transit and the union representing drivers and mechanics are at the bargaining table. the contract expired last

night, the workers will give 24 hours notice before a strike. happening now, a rally to support striking bart workers in san francisco. ktvu's david stevenson joins us now. >> reporter: i am standing on union plaza. it began wrapping up 20 minutes ago. they plan to be up protesting at 6:00 a.m. you can see a number are lingering to talk about strategy. the main themes were wages, safety and fairness and the people making the point included the bart workers with labor unions. look at the video. 100 people showed up here to support the strikers. they told me they are aware of the havoc but they are prepared to do this again for as long as it takes because they believe bart can afford it pay workers more. >> these workers have been over

>> reporter: we decided to take the round trip on the ferry. the passengers on the ferry had about 7,835 passengers this morning. that is 3 times the normal day. over at the golden gate ferry, riders were accommodated although they said it is notrimented as a commute alternative because -- not recommended as a commute alternative because they don't have parking. >> i am working from home. i already planned. >> reporter: we are back in san francisco right now. we took it round trip. the person here said it took her 40 minutes to wait in line.

we are headed back and we will talk to people there. live along the ferry paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. the loss of bart is costing people time and money. the full tear adult ticket from downtown oakland is $3.15 one way. that normally takes 11 minutes. compare that to a.c. transit bus, from oakland to san francisco $4.20 one way and that could take 20 minutes. and the ferry from oakland to san francisco $6.25 one way and takes 30 minutes. san francisco airport set up a free shuttle bus effort today. some buses are running every 15 minutes between the airport and the cal train station. other are running on a limited

schedule. across the bay in oakland airport officials are saying take a.c. transit. caltrans says the commute was heavier than usual but the holiday may have kept the roads quieter. we got a look inside the traffic management center in oakland this morning as the commute was winding down. they are constantly monitoring 300 bay area traffic cam rues along with -- cameras along with censors. they have extended carpool hours on 80 from 5:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m. with no mid-day break during the bart strike. >> we have more coverage coming up. in 10 minutes an update on thetric. at 6:30 p.m -- on the traffic. at 6:30 p.m. more on the bart strike. we will talk with bart and union leaders. today's strike over

shadowed another labor action. a one day walk out by city workers in oakland. a proposal from mayor jean quan failed to stop the walk out. they said they didn't consider her offer serious because she hadn't been involved before last week. police, fire and emergency services are nauticked by the are not effected by -- are not effected by the strike. the heat wave, the bay area is sizzling, temperatures reach triple digits. ktvu's rosemary orozco has a look that hot spots. >> it is warm out there in many locations. it was a scorcher. fairfield 103. 104 antioch. around the bay, another warm day. 90 in fremont. 80s oakland. 70s san francisco. and along the coast, fog

and 67 degrees. 98 in fairfield. 97 livermore. 98 concord. 80s for santa rosa. san francisco 63. the breeze is back and low clouds are pulling in through the golden gate bridge. what you can expect for tomorrow and how long the heat wave will last coming up. firefighters are getting the upper hand on the wildfire near concord. damaging one building and threatening others. ktvu's rosemary orozco said temperatures hit triple digits again in the east bay. it is not clear if the weather sparked the fire. ktvu's john fowler joins us live. are firefighters waking progress right now? >> reporter: apparently so. in the last 5 minutes the smoke from the other side of the

ridge diminished significantly. you will see the fire crews close to the road. this is kirker pass. 328 acres burned. this fire threatened 2 dozen homes. >> reporter: flames through dry brush and grass about 1:00 p.m., blackening hillsides near kirker pass. cal fire helicopters and air tankers attacked this fire from above -- this fire from above as they protect homes. >> the flames were covering the hillside. >> there are canyons that are steep on both sides. prevent as problem for the firefighters and the aircraft. >> reporter: crews ring the hilltops and the smoke forced

we want to check in on our crew driving from san francisco to oakland. we have been keeping a clock on the trip. hour and 15 minutes, ben cruz has gone only 15 blocks. he started at green and the embarcadero and just turned on tahoward street -- to towered street. he still has several blocks to get to the bay bridge. we will continue to monitor his progress throughout the

newscast. a tax on gas went up today across the state. 3.5 cents tax was approved in february. the average california driver will pay $26 more a year due to the tax. the extra money is slated to be used for highway repairs and public transit projects. bay area gas prices. they are down compared to a week ago. in oakland and san jose $3.96. in san francisco, $4.07. the bodies of 19 firefighterred killed in yarnell, arizona a-- firefighters killed in yarnell, were taken to the medical

examiner morning. there is no official word on what happened and how they were killed. autopsies are planned for later this week. ktvu's robert handa joins us now where they have a similar fire strike team. robert what are they staying today? >> reporter: as you heard it has been a busy day for cal fire. we have been watching unionts respond all bay. maybe -- units respond all day. they say the tragedy in arizona has been on their minds. >> reporter: an elite group of firefighters who end up in risky situations. getting people in and out of dangerous areas or responding to the fire near concord. they were distressed to hear about the 19 members in arizona killed in the yarnell hill fire. >> hot shot crews are the best

of the firefighters. one of the best. it is real tragic. >> reporter: cal fire is waiting to hear what happened in arizona but they know a large scale fire is unpredictable. >> the changes. i don't know what happened. sounds like a thunder cell pushed down. >> you train, you teach about fire behavior, and wind and weather and all that stuff but you never can prepare for everything you will see in your career. >> reporter: an unusual fire jumping from one tree to another. as with the hot shots there is always something to learn from fires that catch you by surprise. >> to have something like this happen to an experienced crew like this is a eye opener.

it can happen to anybody at any time. >> reporter: cal fire says they expect to get a full report on the tragedy in arizona but it could take several weeks. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. hall of fameler -- california attorney general kamala harris released a report. the report was based on information companies are retired to submit to the state. the highest percentage of breaches followed by finance and insurance companies. she said half of the breaches could have been prevented if companies had encrypted data before sending it outside a network. we want to continue with the bart strike. in full commute mode as folks head into had east bay. sal castaneda is in our traffic
