12:00 pm
s complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. >> commuters caught by a second day waited in long lines for alternate forms of transportation. the latest on the talk between bart and the union. the latest on the toll gate bridge. and the shooting at the theater in oakland and now we hear from the police chief. i'm tori campbell.
12:01 pm
union workers rallying and commuters left scrambling. we're following all angles. today, there were long lines at the ferries, ac transit stops and, of course, the bay bridge toll plas a sal castaneda just talked to both sides. any ideas, sal? >> reporter: there's several different ways, and so far, no new talks have been scheduled. it appears that the public sentiment may be getting back. since talks broke down sunday night, there have been no new bargaining sessions. today, bart told us how much this strike is costing the agency. >> in revenue, we lose about a million dollars a day. even though we're saving on labor costs, because our employees aren't getting paid, we're still losing money because of the formula that we're bringing in and paying out. the busses and loans are costing hundreds of dollars a day. but it's providing some service
12:02 pm
to get into the city. >> reporter: as you know, this commute has been a mess with some 400,000 bart riders looking for another way to get around. bart management is asking union workers to come back to work while a new contract is negotiated, saying other labor groups have worked without a contract before, but bart union reps say they have been trying to negotiate about bart since april 1 only to be put off by bart. >> again, they need to bring us something substantive that we know they really are serious because the information we've been receiving pushed us out on strike. if in fact, you care about your riders, if in fact you care about your workers, then address the issues that we are talking about. don't just blow us off. >> who's got the power? >> we've got the power. >> reporter: again, no new talks have been scheduled. i did ask repeatedly, i asked the question several different ways, when are you going to then get back to the table?
12:03 pm
both bart and union representatives say they want to get back to the table but they didn't give us anything specific. now, coming up at 5:00, ken prichet is working on the story and hopefully there will be a break in the negotiations. by the way, negotiations are going to be at the cal-trans building in oakland on west grand. again, we're there and going to let you know if anything happens there. live in oakland, sal castaneda, ktvu, channel 2 news. you can see that there is still a backup. those are for the cash lanes. the car pool lane which is still in effect on the far right is open and in the middle and the far left of your screen, those are the fast track lanes that traffic looks like it's rolling rather smoothly. one underuse option to get across the bay is car pooling. some casual commuters had to wait for extra passengers before they could make the trip across the bay bridge. not a single person was waiting
12:04 pm
in line this morning at the casual car pool stop at the lafayette stop staon. er at bart stations in berkeley. least two riders to use the bay bridge car pool lanes. and the bay area ferry systems are really coming through for commuters. news chopper 2 flew over as hundreds of people lined up for the terminal. the harbor bay ferry makes trips across the bay every 45 minutes in the morning from alomeda and oakland. ridership on the san francisco bay ferry is more than normal because of the bart strike. the ferries are carrying about 8,000 commuters during the morning rush. that's up from the 2500 riders it carries on a normal day. some riders say they don't mind the water commute but say the bart strike is making their day more stressful. >> yeah, i'm frustrated. i'm waking up way earlier than i
12:05 pm
need to usually and just not getingly -- i'm not productive at work because i'm like leaving early to catch, you know, the bus or the ferry, and it's just, you know, stressful. >> san francisco bay ferry is running 11 ferries, which is three more than normal. ac transit, which is having its own labor problems is providing extra bay bridge service but it's having trouble keeping up with demands. the long lines were out there this morning at bus stops in oakland. ac transit says it's carrying at least double the normal number of riders to san francisco. some of them say they've waited more than an hour to catch a bus ride into the city. >> i'm just glad ac transit is doing something right now. they're holding strong. i feel bad for bart. >> ac transit bus drivers are working hard to get riders to their destinations. this operators she was about to finish her shift but agreed to stay on longer to drive passengers into san francisco because the need was there.
12:06 pm
>> it's just my job to help the passengers, and just seeing all of them standing there makes me feel so bad so i don't have anything else to do so i'll take them to san francisco. >> ac transit says trips into the city are taking about an hour and-a-half, more than twice as long as a ride on a normal day without the bart strike. commuter patients may be wearing thin with the bart strike. somebody spray painted the word ridiculous on a stairwell in a montgomery station. the one side is spelled backwards. the graffiti is presumably in reference to the bart strike. the bart police say they're investigating the incident and they'll be removing the words. on our ktvu page, we asked viewers who they blame for the bart strike. the biggest share of blame is on the union workers. 59% of our viewers say it's the worker's fault. 21% blamed bart management for the strike, and 20% go both mane

unions. this is an unscientific poll. it's just a sampling of responses from ktvu viewers. we'd like to hear how the bart strike is impacting you today. go to ktvu.com's facebook page and share your story, let us know how you're getting to and from work and dealing with people and extra means of transportation. there's another big commute problem from the bay area. this involved a big rig that got stuck at the toll plaza on the golden gate bridge. christian joins us live. >> reporter: first off, yes, the traffic is moving nicely through the goledden gate plaza. the big rig was moved. and as it gets out of the way, you can see the number 3 lane. you can see possibly that crews still working on that number 3 lane trying to repair some of the damage that big rig caused. the driver got stuck at about 8:45 this morning.
12:08 pm
the driver was telling highway patrol he was southbound from santa rosa into san francisco and trying to make his way into the wider trucking lanes on the bridge. he says traffic would not let him in, so hes says he decided to try to make it in the regular toll lanes and got stuck. the axle was snapped and left his truck stuck in the lane. >> lanes 1 and 2 are the wide lanes and there's signs that way when you're coming south. this gentleman driving this vehicle is from canada, apparently, and did not know or did not get over to the wide lanes in time. >> the driver was unhurt but the truck and toll plaza were both damage. the driver was cited for excessive length. his big rig was 72 feet long. the maximum allowed on the bridge is 65 feet. they say the length of the big rig does not seemo be a
12:09 pm
factor. the driver is liable for the damage caused to the toll plas a coming back out to our live shot, the bridge spokesperson tells me she has seen an uptick in accidents where drivers clipped the bridge since they went with the all-electronic toll taking. she says too often drivers speed through the toll plaza area here and clip those toll plazas. the important note, they're saying that traffic was largely unaffected at the golden gate bridge, and traffic has been relatively low in volume so it hasn't been as bad as it could have been with all of the strike issues that are going on, so since they have low volume here, the closure of one lane not a major impact for drivers but that big rig has been cleared and the toll plaza is being repaired. for now, we are live in san francisco, christian captain, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> thank you, christian. we are following developing news in oakland where we're getting word of an arrest in a double homicide inside a restaurant near lake merit.
12:10 pm
alex savage just spoke with the interim police chief about the case. good afternoon, alex. >> well, good afternoon. oakland's police chief told me this morning this was not a random crime. he wouldn't, however, elaborate on exactly why these two restaurant workers were killed late last night. we know this investigation moved fast. eight hours after this double homicide, police were able to arrest one of the two accused killers. they're still searching now for a second man. two employees of the wing stop on lake park avenue were shot to death inside the restaurant just around 11:00 last night. both of those victims were men in their 20s who lived in richmond. they have not been identified as of yet. investigators are confident this was not a robbery, but at this point, they aren't talking about the specific motive. the police chief, however, did talk about how officers were able to make an arrest so quickly. >> witnesses were in the restaurant or rather employees in the restaurant and patrons that stayed aroun met with some
12:11 pm
investigators and met with the officers that arrived, provided information, and as well as the business had good video surveillance, so between those two, we were able to get enough information to make an arrest. >> and now in response to this crime, oakland police are planning to hold a pair of community meetings later today to reach out to business owners in that neighborhood. that area near lake merit saw a dramatic increase in street robberies over the past month, and now this double murder last night. many neighbors are looking for answers and planning to attend those meetings. >> they think it's really important. there's been a lot more crime in our neighborhood here, and we want to know what's going on and what we can do to raise awareness so that, you know, our neighbors are safe. >> reporter: now, so far, police have not set the times or the locations for those community meetings later today. in the meantime, investigators are still trying to find the second person they believe was involved in this crime from last night. the police chief tells me investigators know who this person is. they have his name and at this

point are just trying to get that man to turn himself in. we're live this afternoon in oakland, alex savage, ktvu, channel 2 news. we'll have much more on the bart strike including why some commuters are paying more because of it. and more triple digit temperatures. steve paulson will be here to tell when you you can expect some relief from the heat. more now on the second day of the bart strike. ktvu's tara moriaty joined us on the morning drive. some had a relatively easy drive to work while others are anxious for this strike to end. >> reporter: they started lining up before 5:00 this morning. >> i'm getting up at 4:00. i used to get up at 6:00. i live here in oakland but because of not knowing how the traffic is going to be and not having enough niem to get to work. >> it sounded like it might be an extra hour to hour and-a-half of my commute. i work in san mateo so i have quite a bit of ways to go. overall, i've been really pleased with the busses. i wish bart had nice coaches
12:16 pm
like that for us all the time. >> reporter: by 7:00 this morning, walnut creek and doubleton pleasonton stations didn't have enough busses for the hub. >> we'll be prepared for the riders this afternoon but tomorrow we'll push the busses out to wal nut creek so we can serve people there. >> reporter: west oakland doubled its number of chartered busses into san francisco from yesterday from 18 to 36, and overall, it hired 86 shuttles, at more than $1,000 each. but it's not costing commuters anything. >> so, i mean, i get up an hour earlier but i get in there an hour earlier. on the way home it was worse because we got stuck with the busses with the protesters in front of it. >> reporter: two streets were closed by 8:00 this morning. commuters are still adjusting to the new schedule but hope the strike ends soon so they can get back to their old routines of riding on bart trains. >> those who opted for other
12:17 pm
forms of public trends that may be paying more for their daily commute, here's a sample comparison. the cost of an adult bart ticket from downtown oakland to the embarcadero is about $3.16 one way, and about 11 minutes. the other way is 4.20 one way and takes 20 minutes or more depending on the traffic. and the san francisco bay ferry costs 6.25 one way and takes about 30 minutes. today is shaping up to be another hot day, reaching the 90s and 100s in some areas. as ktvu's janine delavega is telling us the affect on the sweltering temperatures. >> reporter: people started taking advantage of what was being offered to them at this community center. >> ooh, water. >> reporter: this is one of 10 designated cooling centers where people can get relief in san

jose. it's supposed to reach 95 in some areas in the city. they're open today from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.. >> this is really terrible. but it's good that in here we have a centralized air conditioned. >> reporter: kids were staying in the shade and playing it cool. in east san jose, people who were trying to get exercise at alan rock park were turned away because of a city temporarily closed due to extreme fire danger. >> i'm glad they closed it. my wife and i are concerned. we were so close we don't know what happened. >> reporter: some who live nearby are often disturbed because they see people throwing cigarette butts. >> people come up here in bikes, they park it, walk in, they're smoking and, you know, this is a time bomb ready to go. >> reporter: community centers are supposed to be closed on the fourth of july, but if the office of emergency services says cooling centers are needed
12:19 pm
because of the excessive heat, then they will open up on that holiday at 9:00 a.m. reporting from san jose, janine delavega, ktvu channel 2 news. for some it's still hot but for others it is running a little bit cooler, and temperatures are very comfortable for some. believe it or not, concord running 6 degrees cooler this time today than yesterday and there's a decent breeze running through the delta. there's a fresh breeze right now for parts of the coast and the bay and a much bigger fog bay as well. had some tropical lows coming in this morning. it's pushed out into the pacific and don't have to worry about it. it's been one hot stretch. one week ago, we had clouds and rain over us. it does look like though there's some chivrngs chinks in the armor. this is a big boy one, so it's taking a while to break down.
12:20 pm
so hot and humid and muggy inland. heat advisories at least through wednesday. i don't think there will be any by thursday. there's some really screaming messages that the high pressure will start its group by thursday or friday. it's hot for some. that wal nut creek is at a higher elevation, close tore 83 in town. livermore, concord, 83. it's 70 in san francisco, half moon bay, 61. san jose pretty warm. some locations are definitely running cooler today than they were yesterday. it's a cooker down in las vegas. you'd expect that. fres no is already 100, sacramento 93. so it's still very hot. that's a lot of that cloud cover and some of the isolated showers that skirted by this morning. but you can see there's a lot more in the way of fog and low clouds and i think that will play into a cooler forecast going forward for the rest of the week. fog, lots of sun, cool for some, warm, mild, nice, hot for
12:21 pm
others, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s to 100s. a 40 degree spread for some of the temperatures near the coast and some areas inland. and i think after today, there could be signs of a little bit cooler pattern taking shape. it might hold on for one more day as we head into thursday and i think things start to cool down well inland, and but tori, everything says cooler and cooler. the high will be kicked out of the picture. >> it's been hot. >> long stretch for us. >> thank you, steve. several bay area police departments are joining forces to crack down on cell braatory gunfire over the holiday. that was the sound of gunfire recorded at the shot spotter incident review center in new york. they said they'll be out in force to track down any gunfire this week. police in san francisco, oakland, richmond and east palo alto will have extra officers on

duty where gunfire and fireworks were recorded last july 4th. and there are just more than a dozen bay area cities where people can buy and use state approved safe fireworks for the fourth of july. you can see them on your screen. authorities say people who are caught using illegal fireworks can face fines of up to $50,000 and a year in jail. today a rally is planned in san francisco to save what is believed to be the oldest african-american owned book store in the country. marcus books has been on fillmore since 1960. that building houses, the book store was sold recently and the book store is facing eviction. today at 3:30, supporters will allow the new owners to allow them to stay. we're continuing our coverage of the bart strike. coming up, the economic toll the strike is taking on the bay area.
