day two of the b.a.r.t. strike finds union workers still on the picket line and traffic backed up. but there is progress to report at the bargaining table. good evening i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. one union has an agreement but it is the smallest union and the deal will not get the trains rolls. asf, cme says says it has a tentative agreement. the union has 34 in supervisor rolls and is recommending they return to their jobs.

the other unions representing station agents are back at the bargaining table but unless we bring you news on this newscast, they will still be on the picket line. we continue with the negotiations right now. ken wayne is live in oakland with the very latest. >> reporter: the microphones are ready we're waiting for word to come out. the negotiators are inside. they try to try to come to some sort of a resolution and end this b.a.r.t. strike. they've been at it for several hours now and the good news is they're still talking. first representatives of iclu and atu made their ways to the doorless. a few moments later the b.a.r.t.

management team followed. later, they made an announcement saying there had to be movement. >> our expectations is that we will receive a substantially different officer from b.a.r.t. management than what we've seen. >> reporter: b.a.r.t. management wasn't optimistic. >> nothing that i'm aware of has changed. we're just ready to get back to the table and get talking, trying to get our workers back and our trains rolling. >> reporter: a letter from gavin newsom and the state comptroller was sent to both sides today urging the resumption of negotiations. two top state mediators joined the talking tonight. >> what do we want? >> a contract. >> reporter: the unions touted the appearance of a member of the board of directors on their picket line. >> we're family. one part of the family has

disrespect than the other part, that's the main part of it. >> reporter: meantime b.a.r.t. station sits idle locked down as the nation's fifth largest transit system collecting dust for the second straight day. >> i'm kind of getting tired of he said-she said. we need to get the trains rolling. >> reporter: now as we mentioned earlier b.a.r.t. did reach a tentative agreement with its smallest union representing about 200 middle managers. not the big unions, the train operators and the station agents. so that is the breakthrough we're waiting for. they're still inside, they're still talking if anything happens during this newscast we'll bring it to you. live in downtown oakland, ken wayne, ktvu news. now to jana katsuyama at san francisco's transbay terminal. and why some commuters say day two of the evening commute seemed to bring even more

frustrations than yesterday. jana. >> reporter: frank take a look behind me and maybe you can see why. back there there is a line of people and i don't know if something has just broken out. we're hearing some shouting over there. people have been under a lot of pressure today. i understand that is a line for a bus to oakland. almost all the commuters we spoke with said today was worse than yesterday. longer lines for ferries, taxies and longer commutes. >> reporter: today was a test of patient. >> they're a lot more anxious. >> reporter: as commuters tried to get out of the city. long lines of cars seemed to be parks but were actually inches through san francisco streets. >> long day at work. it's very tiring. the b.a.r.t. needs to work something out. they need to carve some time

off. in 45 minutes we've traveled a mile. >> the light was on for several minutes, we were like, what if we get stranded here. >> you can only go so far, it's a clogged drain. >> reporter: a stalled truck on the bay bridge lower deck late this afternoon didn't help. what did help the flow were traffic officers posted at key intersections by 2:30. a half hour earl littler than yesterday. lines for ferries stretched down the embarcadero. >> yesterday i feel there was half a million people, maybe more than that. >> because of the b.a.r.t. strike i knew to leave earl littler because i knew everybody was going to be on the buses. >> reporter: for many commuters frustration as packed buses rolled away. >> i waited 45 minutes i need to get my child from child care by 6:00 and i'm not going to make it. so we're probably going to be

charged a late fee. >> i had to leave work late and catch the bus as opposed to b.a.r.t. >> we heard coiothe lines which is still long as people wait for buses. tensions have been very high today. a lot of frustration as people try to make it to where they need to go. we understand that there will be guides out with oran vests tomorrow trying to help people get to the correct bus as well as those traffic officers who will be out in full force. jana katsuyama, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now, morning traffic from the walnut creek area into san francisco was very heavy once again today. that's a corridor where commuters have few options when b.a.r.t. is not running. coto the transportation

commission, that was twice as busy. look at this line for the ferry. it was very long once again today. however the number of people who road the ferry this morning from the east bay to san francisco actually dropped to 8,000. that's down 400 passengers from yesterday. that is still however much higher than the usual 2,500 ferry riders. a number of commuters told us this b.a.r.t. strike is a source of unwanted stress. they say having to rearrange their lives and rethink how to get to and from their destinations is not easy. >> yeah, i'm frustrated i'm waking up way earlier than i need to. usually and just not getting i'm not productive at work because i'm like leaving early to catch you know the bus or the ferry. and it's just, you know, it's stressful. >> i'm really, really tired. i was freezing this morning because i didn't expect it to be so cold waiting in line for an hour and a half at the ferry

terminal. >> we're now two days into the strike and already commuters seem fed up and ready for the trains to start rolling again. >> reporter: and a lot of you have been asking us how much do the b.a.r.t. workers really make and how much does it cost to ride the train. >> i think there are plenty of people out there who would be grateful to be making that kind of money. >> reporter: her husband makes much less. >> just to see that their salary benefits are much more than i make in a year in

salary. >> reporter: salary, plus overtime, benefits and family benefits. >> reporter: unlike a local teacher, the equivalent is a high school diploma, ged or equivalent. >> there are people out there who are well educated that would be so happy to have these jobs and do it with a smile on their face. >> reporter: but those considerable wide skills are acquired through years of on the job training making their workers extremely difficult to replace. now in looking at b.a.r.t.'s highest salaries last year mostly executives, specialists and police officers 147 employees made more than $200,000 a year. of them, 36 made more than a quarter million, 10 made more than 300,000 and one 400,000. >> management, management that situation may be out of control. >> reporter: that's why the eminsons had very little sympathy for either side. >> i think it's outrageous to

inconvenience these many people. >> it all comes down to me to being grateful if what you have. it felt very ungrateful. >> tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. b.a.r.t. says its train operators make $30.22. in new york city, subway subway operators make an average of 21.87. and in chicago operators make $31. the bay area's main route to reno along interstate 80 was completely shutdown.

a flash flood sent water over the road. the landslide is the size of a - inches deep and we're told that clearing the slide has been more difficult than expected. the highway patrol tells us one eastbound lane did reopen at about 9:20 tonight and they hope to have the westbound lanes open by 11:30. the bay area is a weather in contrast. fog nearly blanketed san francisco. elsewhere the sun was shining and it was hot with temperatures inland topping 100 degrees. and our meteorologist rosemary orozco has been monitoring the excessive heat warning for tomorrow. >> we have the extended heat advisory all the way until thursday. so4th of july at 10:30 when it's expected to expire.

the national weather service has decided to extend the heat warning for parts of the north bay. our valleys as well as our hills for the east bay. as soon as you get away from the east bay shoreline notice here orinda moraga included areas of venetia. we slide west a little bit, fremont you're in the clear but just east of the area we've got that warning in place for the hills as well as the inland valleys for the east bay. as we shift out just a little bit, it's for areas of milpitas south of gilroy. for the peninsula we are clear. as we get into sunny vale, that's where the breaking part is. so we've got a huge contrast as frank mentioned a moment ago, and because of that we saw a decent on shore breeze, really begin to pick up into the afternoon. and that brought temperatures down in some areas. so we'll take a break at your current conditions, what we can expect for wednesday and just how long this atis going to

last. the heat is being blamed for power out ages in the bay. at the height of the outage, 9,500 customers were without power in san jose, milpitas and campbell. the outages came as as authorities say that people got home and turned on their acs. a baby left in the car. what his father says he was doing while his son was overheating. we'll tell you why a popular roller coaster had to be shut down. >> a special report, a deally combination and how it's fueling other crimes.

a father is under arrest after leaving his 10 -month-old baby in his car while temperatures surged into the 90s. the baby was found in a strip mall parking lot. that's where amber lee is now to tell us what that father was doing while his child was in the car, amber. >> reporter: the police tell me the man was here at the pacific commons strip mall. he goes inside the store, buys cold drinks while he leaves, his baby boy inside his car.

it's a beautiful afternoon, 95 degrees outside. a couple notices a baby screaming inside a car and calls 911. rescue crews are about to break the window when the father returns. >> it's extremely dangerous any time of year. but even more so right now when we're experiencing this heat wave. >> reporter: the temperature inside the car raises three to 4 degrees every eight minutes. the temperatures inside the car is 40 degrees higher than it is outside. >> most of the occurrences is children in car seats they can't get up and move around. they can't get off a layer of clothing, they're basically trapped in a car seat. >> i would never leave a kid. >> reporter: this woman works

pioca and says officers came in to question her about the father. >> i don't know how the baby could survive inside that car. >> reporter: fortunately the baby did survive. the father was arrested. >> i would never do that in my life. >> reporter: we also found this father inside buying cold drinks. the difference, he left his wife with the kids while he went to get the kids. >> please don't do it. you're putting your child in danger. >> reporter: the father has admitted to previously running errands and leaving his child in the car. live in fremont, amber lee, ktvu channel 2 news. a 26-year-old man is behind bars in oakland tonight in connection with a string of felony crimes. cleveland is accused of committing two shootings, three carjackings and at least three kidnappings all in oakland. this is surveillance video now of cleveland from that day. police say it shows him committing several of the

crimes. he is charged with 21 felony counts including two counts of attempted murder. and oakland police say they have made one arrest and are now looking for a second suspect in connection with a double homicide that happened right in front of witnesses. police say two gunman walked into the wing stop restaurant near lake merit at about 11:45 last night and killed two employees. the victims have been identified as 26-year-old jose santa maria and 23-year-old kenneth bradley both of richmond. the restaurant was open and other workers and customers were inside. oakland's police chief says the witnesses helped with the arrest. >> the community was involved, they stayed, met with the officers investigators at the scene. provided information and also this business had good video surveillance. >> police say the surveillance video shows the shooting was not a robbery but they won't say what the motive was. >> more details now, oakland police plan to hold meetings on crime prevention tomorrow at

the lake shore avenue baptist church. the first meeting is set for 7:00 p.m. and is open to the public. the second meeting is at 8:00 and is for business owners in the adams point neighborhood. the president made an unexpected announcement on the health care law known as obama care. the president has agreed to delay the requirement to companies with 50 or more employees provide health care coverage for their workers or face fines. business groups had objected to that and the white house said they heard their concerns. now the requirement will go into effect in 2014 instead of this come -- take effect in 2015 instead of this coming 2014. prisoners were removed because they were vulnerable to black fever. medically at risk people are

most vulnerable to that fungal infection. it just opened a month ago and already a popular new roller coaster at great america has been shut down. but as ktvu's robert handa tells us it's not because of safety concerns. >> people lined up only to be turned away today at great america's popular gold striker. the immense 104-foot high wooden roller coaster opened at the start of june to rave reviews but has been shut down since yesterday due an ongoing conflict with a neighboring company over noise. >> we're all excited you know and it's really a killer to not be able to ride it. >> reporter: the problem, when officials measured the noise level without any riders it was within acceptable limits. but nobody accounted for when

riders start screaming. great america acknowledges the problem and says it is making adjustments to bring down the mechanical noise. >> we have found with the coaster running we are just slightly above the levels and we are working with all parties involved to make sure we reach those levels and accommodate everybody. >> reporter: still many disappointed would be riders are mad a ride could be shut down for being noisy. >> i think it's -- because the park was here before the businesses. >> reporter: great america is positive that the ride will pass inspection tomorrow and will be reopened by the middle of july. we're following a hot day. a recent offshore breeze has really helped to cool things off. fairfield looking at 24 miles per hour. i think of livermore and santa

the oakland a's are playing an interleague game against an opponent they rarely see the chicago cubs so you could expect a big drop. the b.a.r.t. strike forced many fans to change their plans. >> reporter: we set up special cameras to capture the parking lot fill up the hours before the game. >> taking the car, trying to car pool with as much people as we can. >> reporter: how often do you take b.a.r.t.? >> every time, every time that i come to games. always. >> reporter: but the b.a.r.t. station remains shut down. >> we know b.a.r.t. is an important factor of getting people to the game. >> reporter: david reneti says

the a's are urging fans to get to the game early. >> tomorrow is the fireworks show. we have the fireworks show and we have the cubs. they've never been here before for a regular season game. >> reporter: for now ac transit buses are still running to the coliseum bus station. the station is still a connection for people heading to oakland airport but air b.a.r.t. bus service is shut down. the strike could also be taking a bite out of attendance. these friends say a friend from san francisco decided to stay home. >> he just had a birthday, we were going to buy him his ticket and all that good stuff. i'm glad we didn't buy him the ticket now because he couldn't make it. >> so b.a.r.t. was the deal breaker? >> b.a.r.t. was the deal breaker. >> now with 10,000 spaces they say that should be enough to accommodate everyone. eric rasmussen, ktvu news. b.a.r.t. says it hopes to add more free buses for commuters tomorrow.

b.a.r. t. says it chartered 200 buses to help the commute. the free buses are available at the el cerrito del norte station. you don't hear this every day. if you happen to have a parking ticket during oakland's one day strike. the city says you do not have to pay for it. parking control officers were among those who walked out but one parking control officer did show up for work and ended up writing tickets. the city had announced a no ticket policy before the strike and says it will honor that pledge. stay with ktvu news for continuing coverage. we're starting early at 4:00 a.m. tomorrow to bring you the very latest on b.a.r.t. and the morning commute. yesterday was one of the slowest days we've had. today was slower than yesterday. >> at 10:45 tonight, the b.a.r.t. strike impact on business and why some are affected more than

their love. >> normalizes our family and i think it's great for the children. they don't feel marginalized, they're older now but now we feel like a family. >> and the couple says that the marriage was the perfect time because they're leaving for maui next month. san francisco anti trust lawyer joseph alioto filed a federal suit to block the merger deal. he argued it would help consumers by reducing competition and driving up prices. on wall street stocks closed down after reporting of turmoil in egypt. the dow ended with a loss of 42 points the nasdaq dropped one. earlier in the day, the numbers had been better because of manufacturing. there was also good news about

car sales in the united states. the auto data company says sales were up 91% in june to 1.4 vehicles. toyota and honda say their sales were up 10% for the month. in all auto makers are on track to sell about 1 million more vehicles this year compared to last. and more channels could be coming to apple tv. bloomberg is reporting that apple is close to a deal with time warner cable. that would bring a lot of live channels to apple's set top box. apple is in competition with s era toga based roku which has many more channels. apple's deal with time warner may not be completed for a few months. now to tonight's special report, it's a big prescription medication bust that oakland police showed us exclusively. tara moriarty reports what police say is a growing problem and an easy way to get high.

a long time elementary school teacher was charged today with 91 counts of molestation. 45-year-old andrew martin was arrested last week on suspicion of sexually abusing students and is now being held in lieu of $10 million bail. he's worked for the mount diablo school district since 1991. most recently at wood side elementary in concord. they have identified a dozen allegedvictims but have not said if they are boys or girls. workers with the regional park district have reached a deal. that means parks will remain open over the 4th of july holidays. this tentative agreement addresses the union's main concerns about pay raises, retirement and health care contributions. the extreme heat in the

south bay has prompted san jose city officials to close alam rock park for another day and that is just fine for some folks who live near by and worry about visitors starting fires. >> i'm glad they closed it because my wife and i are concerned when it gets hot like this if there's ever a fire we're so close we don't know what would happen. >> the park was closed to reduce the fire danger created by all the dry vegetation. >> the california highway patrol says starting tomorrow officers will go into maximum enforcement mode as the 4th of july holiday gets under way. last year nine people in california died in traffic accidents in a 30 hour span during the july 4th holiday. officers are reminding revelers to pick a designated driver. in addition they add that drivers should watch their speed. the birds are protected cliff swallows, some died after being caught in netting that was put up to keep them away from a bridge along highway 101

in petaluma. environmentalists sued to stop the work but caltrans says it adjusted the netting and no birds have been killed in three months. last sunday's fire at the chevron refinery in richmond could end up costing the city millions of the dollars. the fires knocked out chevron's crude unit for eight months and that sent profits at plant tumbles. that has lowered the value of the refinery and could end up costing richmond $6 million in revenue. and temperatures soared again today. when we will finally see a cooldown. >> and the b.a.r.t. stations look like ghost towns tonight. we'll tell you about the trickle down effect of the b.a.r.t. strike next. the fiery crash that caused russia a rocket and three satellites.

a live picture tonight from downtown oakland where b.a.r.t. and it's two biggest unions are meeting this hour trying to reach a contract. the b.a.r.t. strike is hurting the bottom line of bay area businesses. many companies say they are losing millions of the dollars a day of productivity. small businesses near b.a.r.t. stations are also feeling the pinch. patti. >> reporter: one live in glen park and this village depends on foot traffic. these mom and pop shops say

they depend on commuters and they're not shy about saying that they're struggling. glen station is empty and so is this watering hole with the same name. >> usually the giants play and there's great fans in here and the place is usually very crowded. >> reporter: richard understood hill blames the b.a.r.t. strike. >> yesterday was one of our slowest days we had. today was slower than yesterday. >> reporter: businesses built along b.a.r.t. lines tell us that without commuters there are few customers. >> it's like everything halted. everything is all lonely, all with nothing. with no one. >> reporter: the strike is also hurting commuters in their pocketbook. >> you have to save for gas now. and people catch traffic. so it's definitely had a huge effect on me negatively. >> reporter: lost worker productivity has cost businesses $70 million a day. >> productivity has gone way down because meetings keep getting pushed back. our clients aren't coming in on time anymore either. >> reporter: for mom and pop

shops like glen park station productivity is the least of their worries. >> last night we were about $300 short, sort of unusual. so tells the story. >> reporter: glen park station usually stays open till about 2:00 a.m. but it may close early tonight. last night it shut its doors just after midnight. and they say this is an unsustainable trend and they need this strike to end soon. morning commuters on golden state bridge had their own back ups to deal with today. a big rig got stuck at the toll plaza. the truck driver said it couldn't merge into the wider trucking lanes and got jammed before toll booths. the driver is liable for damage to the plaza. several lanes were shut down and traffic was actually stopped in both directions for a short time as that truck was removed. opening ceremonies for the

america's cup are now just a few days. dancers from new zealand were on hand to welcome the swiss italian and new zealand competitors to san francisco. opening ceremonies are set for this thursday afternoon a boat parade is set for friday. hot weather will be the headline once again tomorrow for our inland communities. the ridge of high pressure remains firm over the west. also continuing to track little bit of monsoonal moisture moving into california as it moves around the boundary of that ridge of high pressure you can see the clock wise motion here. thunderstorms fired off over areas of the sierra today it was quite impressive.

we continue to see high level clouds even a little muggy in some of our inland communities. we continue to trek this for you. if you do plan ongoing to the sierra for your hold those thunderstorms should remain in the forecast through june. we do have that forecast, it lasts through thursday for inland communities so if you do work outdoors that triple digit heat could really, really be taxing on the body. so just be aware of that. take breaks if you can. drink plenty of water tomorrow. we have the on shore breeze blowing pretty good. the heat inland and the cool coast. the gradient between the two really cranks up that heat that's what we saw today. as we mentioned a little while ago. outside right now a whole 10 degrees cooler than where we were 20 hours ago. hopefully you can open the window and get some of that nice cool inland. tomorrow we'll be mild along the coast. we'll be very hot inland once again. especially the inner east bay where temperatures will reach

above 80 degrees once again. giving you a look as we start out tomorrow morning. marine haayer right about 1,000 feet but it's already moving across the bay. we could wake up with some of this tomorrow morning. by the afternoon, mostly clear skies. you do see some of that monsoonal moisture being pulled in as high clouds. tomorrow morning as you get out the door, 59 degrees for vallejo, 59 in oakland, 57 san francisco. for the afternoon a near repeat. low 90s in the forecast for areas in napa. for the east shoreline. liver mother as well as antioch, down into the south bay. 90s for areas right around san jose. sunny vale 92 for you along if peninsula for tomorrow, 87 redwood city. 72 in san francisco. 60s for the coast once again.

the women are into the semi finals in wimbledon. the player that knocked out serena williams proved that was no fluke. after eliminating williams, she was at it again. she'll be headed to the semi finals for the second time in her career. the shaving cream pies of the future will not come for gallardi. after they acquired kennedy, they have dealt gallardi to the flames for a draft pick in 2015. anyone knows what you're doing in 2015. i'm not sure what i'm doing next week.
