pounder burgers. another new way to love mcdonald's. ♪ just about an hour from now, negotiations are set to resume again between b.a.r.t. and the union as we continue with day three of the strike. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. breaking news rescue crews have rushed to a children's camp near yosemite camp where a tree fell onto a dining hall. this is happening at camp

tawonga just outside of yosemite. 23 people were hurt when a tree came crashing down. at least one person was killed. a camp representative says all of the injured are adults and no children were hurt. camp tawonga is a jewish resident camp with offices based in san francisco. we have a crew on the way to the camp and will bring you new details as they are available. now to the b.a.r.t. strike. talks resumed last night but broke off at 3:00 this morning. alex savidge is live to tell let us know where things stand. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: good afternoon. both sides are being tight- lipped about that overnight session. we're told significant progress has been made. talks will pick up in downtown

oakland. b.a.r.t. workers continue to walk picket lines for a third day in a row. there's some hope for a resolution to this labor dispute after union negotiators and b.a.r.t. managers started talking at 6:00 last night and stayed at the bargaining table until 3:00 a.m. two state meditators have been called in for these talks. a union negotiator says their involvement has helped tremendously. they are hung up on two issues, pay and benefits. this woman says it's a good sign everyone is back to the table. >> hopefully it is. haven't heard anything yet.

just waiting to hear. >> reporter: commuters have been forced to find other ways to get around. this morning there were long lines for charter buses and boats heading into san francisco. regular b.a.r.t. riders are keeping their fingers crossed as negotiations pick back up. >> i'm so happy for that. this is encouraging right before the 4th of july weekend. and we'll wait four more years to start it again. >> reporter: if b.a.r.t.'s management and the union agree, i'm told the strike could be called off immediately. but it would take another 12

hours or so to get the employees back on the job and have the b.a.r.t. trains up and running again. negotiations will resume about an hour from now. ken pritchett, my colleague, is here. he'll be monitoring the talks and will have a full report tonight at 6:00. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. meanwhile, b.a.r.t. will continue shuttle service from five east bay stations to san francisco tomorrow. for the 4th of july. but it will be scaled back to just once an hour. three buses will leave each station at 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. the stations include walnut creek, dublin, fremont, el cerrito and west oakland. the san francisco dropoff and pick up location is near the transbay terminal. evening buses will leave at 4:00, 5:00:00, and 6 -- 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00 p.m., assuming there is still a strike. this video was shot inside the montgomery station inside san francisco. the escalators are off and the ticket slots are backed by out of service stickers. union workers and managers with ac transit will return today. the union will give a 24-hour notice if a strike is called by ac transit. many commuters are returning to the ferry system as the b.a.r.t. strike stretches on. san francisco-based ferry is transporting more than double its normal load of passengers. as katie utehs found out, some say they may make the change permanent. >> reporter: in the tidiest of single-form lines people boarded the san francisco bay ferry starting at 6:00 a.m. this is my second day doing

are concerned. >> it's the use of guns and weapons and people getting pistol-whipped and shot on a regular basis. >> reporter: merchants say they've never seen the amount of crime like they've seen recently. robberies, shooting, even parking tickets were all talked about at a community meeting held by the oakland police department. mainly the newly formed district 2 run by anthony toriboi. >> we need to hear from the community to understand their concerns, to solicit their help and ideas. >> reporter: the tipping point came late monday when two employees of a wing-stop restaurant were shot and killed. oakland police say two men came into order food but from somehow spooked by somebody else on the street. they ran to the back freezer. when the two employees came to check on them, one of the suspects shot and killed kenneth bradley and jose santa maria, both from richmond. >> that was not an attempted robbery. this was not a plea planned

event. >> reporter: -- preplanted event. >> reporter: back at the meeting, oakland pd says they've hired more officers. >> we want to partner with the police. i want to get to know them so they know who we are, what are hours of operation are. >> reporter: this morning, police told merchants to consider cameras or lights to help deter criminals. in terms of the wing-stop case, they are still looking for a second suspect. it's still unclear what type of charges they will face. another meeting is scheduled for 7:00 here at the lakeshore avenue baptist church. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. the pastor of a west oakland church is calling for new safety measures to protect the church from this kind of damage, shooting suspects fleeing police, crashed into the sanctuary of a joshua christian church on sunday. it happened a few hours after parishioners left. the pastor says it's the fourth time the car has been hit by a car and is calling for a

stoplight and metal barriers. >> if we had retraining poles, re-- restrain -- restraining poles it would make us feel more safe. that's what we're asking for. >> he says it's a blessing that no lives were lost. it's not clear when the church will resume services or community outreach programs because of the damage. police are searching for whoever shot a bouncer at a santa rosa bar overnight. the shooting happened around 1:15 a.m. at epic social bar lounge on mendocino avenue. police say a man was annoying other patrons. he was asked to leave and that's when police say the patron pulled a gun out and shot the bouncer in the stomach. the 23-year-old was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery. his condition has not been released. the suspect, a hispanic man in his 20s with long hair. developing news out of

egypt where the clash between egypt's president and the military is heating up. today, the egyptian military ordered a travel ban on president mohamed morsi and his muslim brotherhood movement. they are working to establish a coalition government to replace the islamist-backed constitution. president morsi has refused to set down despite calls from secular egyptians who say he's dictator. a gas leak that caused brief evacuations in san jose this morning has been capped. fire officials say construction crews doing a remodel at the west gate shopping center hit a two-inch pipe about 9:00 this morning. it happened near a starbucks which was evacuated as a precaution. >> natural gas will dissipate in the air. sometimes it forms vapor clouds. we wanted to evacuate the area and make sure there's no pockets being formed. but pretty much evacuated

an ohio judge ruled today that the cleveland man charged with holding three women captive for a decade is competent to stand trial. an examination found that ariel castro is mentally able to understand the charges and assist attorneys in his case. he's pleaded not guilty to the

329-count indictment that includes multiple kidnappings and rape charges. a trial is scheduled for august 5th but a judge says it could be delayed. a professor to gave gym an a in his criminal justice trial testified in his trial this morning. zimmerman is claiming that he shot and killed 17-year-old trayvon martin in self-defense. prosecutors are trying to show that zimmerman knew understand the stand your ground law, a person can prove self-defense only with great bodily harm. >> self-defense is an affirm defense. it's not one of those things that you are gonna whisk through in a day. after you teach it, you will any exwhrecket from bringing it back in the -- neglect from bringing it back in the classroom. >> zimmerman said in an interview that he did not know about the self-defense law.

today, the international search for edward snowden turned into involving bolivia. president of that country's plan was diverted to austria because it was thought snowden was on board. >> translator: we were informed there was some unfounded suspicions that mr. snowden was on the aircraft. we don't know who invented that ridiculous lie. >> the plane was searched in austria and snowden was not on board. bolivia is one of the countries where snowden is seeking asylum. and the president of that country said ed would consider it. the city of oakland will pay more than $1 million to settle a lawsuit filed by occupy protesters. they claim they were victims of excessive force with police. two protesters say they were

injured by flash bang grenades. another one claims he was shot by beanbag rounds. police will have to follow their crowd control policies in the future. an east bay elementary schoolteacher is due in court, 45-year-old teacher has been charged with 91 counts of molestation. he's worked with the mt. diablo school district since 1991. most recently he taught at woodside elementary in concord where police say most of the abuse took place. martin remains in jail on $10 million bail. great america hopes its newest ride will be back open tomorrow in time for the holiday crowds. the gold striker was shut down monday after opening last month. park officials say neighbors were complaining the screams from the riders put it over the agreed-upon noise limit. the closure disappointed many people who wanted to try out the wooden roller coaster. >> we're all excited.

it's really a killer to not be able to ride it. >> we're only here for today. we can't come back. >> great america crews are working to decrease the mechanical noise the gold striker makes. inspectors will be out later today to measure noise levels. san jose is opening cooling centers to help people beat the heat. they will be open in several locations including the berryessa and camden site centers. few people had taken advantage of the service. an excessive heat warning is in effect until 7:00 tomorrow night. the city has not decided if the cooling centers will be open tomorrow. the city of pleasanton just opened a cooling center. the senior center cooling center will be open until 11:00 tonight. senior citizens are available for transportation for free. firefighters have been taking care of fires sparked by more than 2800 lightning

strikes. eight small fires have burned involving teams from here to placer and yuba counties. no word of damage or injuries. well, for the first time in a long time, about a week, we had a decent fog bank this morning. made it to the caldecott tunnel and a few points north. still back to the coast but losing out. a few high clouds out there. lows this morning and last night were a little bit cooler but i will tell you, it doesn't take long to start warming up. some tropical clouds seem to work their way in. kind of skirting the coast and in the sierra nevada possibility of thundershowers really developing. last week this all started about six days ago. it will continue into the weekend for some well inland. this hot weather ended in june and the early part of july. things look cooler as we head into the 5th and the weekend. some of that cloud veis

going parallel. part of the san mateo, marin and then sonoma coast to the mendocino coast where it turns inland. still some 80s and 90s. 60s, 70s. more coast and bay and then san jose and even 80. livermore is already 91. that walnut creek is at a higher location. 86. a little bit cooler for tomorrow. the days are so long, it doesn't take long. blistering heat in the desert, palm springs 107. 88 in reno. they were 105. you can see some of those showers are trying to develop right along the mendocino coast towards fort bragg and some more heading up in the central sierra. so any travel plans around mammoth, yosemite, keep an eye on things. these thunderstorms can really erupt. mostly sunny. a few high clouds. we have a little bit of a bigger fog bank. it's retreated. it's still hot inland. it's been hot up there. 107. we'll go some 80s to near 90s

option. the team says there are 12,000 parking spaces open. even if the b.a.r.t. strike continues tomorrow, big crowds are still expected at san francisco's fort mason for the 4th of july celebration. and there will be some changes in place. this is what it looked like last year after crowds enjoying the holiday left a lot of trash in the great meadow. now glass containers and kegs are no longer allowed. golden gate national recreation officials have put out more trash and recycling bins. they are asking visitors to make sure they clean up after themselves. today on the news at 5:00 -- we are keeping a close watch on the situation with the b.a.r.t. strike. negotiations are expected to resume in about half an hour. we will update you on any progress and should there be an agreement, we will break into coverage and bring it to you. again, once an agreement is reached, it will still take about 12 hours for the trains to start running again. you cans are get updates through -- you can also get
