spectators to lined harts avenue and cheered the loudest for the servicemen and women who marched, sponsored by the kiawanas club and raises funds for community service groups. and san jose just aped up its own 4th of july parade, veterans groups, classic cars uncle sam and antique vehicles and even a contingent of giants fans, the parade ended with a picnic on the alameda. day 4 of the bart strike and right now both sides are back at the table trying to hammer out a deal on this 4th of july. they started meeting at 11:00 this morning. sal castaneda is live in oakland with the latest. >> reporter: we have been here and when both sides arrived we tried to ask them questions at the negotiations site here. while no one has been saying

much it seems some frustration is beginning to show. >> i don't know. it is a mess. this is my 4th contract and this is the worst i have seen. they have not -- they have not substantially addressed any of the safety concerns the unions have for the public and the union and the workers and it was a long day yesterday. >> as you heard union members say bart is not addressing safety concerns for its workers and there is still progress to be made on the pay issue. now on this 4th of july, which is also the 4th day of the strike, a state mediator is facilitating talks they are not meeting face-to-face, they are supposed to go into the evening unless of course they get a contract done before then. anyone here in the bay area is looking for any signs of progress. >> you guys will know right after we know when we get a

contract. >> and right now as we said they have been negotiating for -- they were a little late -- so negotiating for about a half- hour. the bart people didn't say anything but again everyone is saying they hope to get it done today and even after it gets done it would be at least 12 hours before the trains could start running, should they reach a deal tonight. tonight at 5:00 ktvu's ken pritchett will be here keeping track of what is going on with negotiations, sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we will be standing by. because of the holiday part has scaled back its charter bus station, three buses sent to those stations this morning. return trips from san francisco are scheduled to run between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. ferry service is also being scaled back because of the holiday. they will not be providing

extra service today. regular weekday ferry service will be back tomorrow. one bay area transit agency is beefing up service to help people get where they need to go and are adding busses to help meet an anticipated high demand and running more offense. the frequency of the buses or doubling from 30 minute intervals to 15 minute intervals. we have continuing coverage of the bart strike there. if you go to our website and click on the bart strike cab we have links to casual carpooling and other alternatives and you can sign up to get alerts on the bart strike for your mobile device. well, the bart strike may make it more difficult for as fans to get to this afternoon's game. i want to give you a live look outside. there is interstate 880, things are still moving near the coliseum but you look on the right hand side that is an entry point and slow going

kind host city. >> this is my 11th cup, doing all of them since 1980 in 1 capacity or the other, what is exciting for me this is the first time in the 162 history of the cup the fans can see it from shore. >> as you can see from this practice footage san francisco's windy day makes for fast and exciting races, which organizers say everyone will enjoy. however today's grand opening was a long time in the making, from funding issues with private and public partnerships to the controversial convert venue which have had many people who own homes in the marina area and who could forget the loss of a racer during the practice on the bay. as the eyes turn toward the actual races hundreds of volunteers are scurrying around to put the final touches on the exhibit today and not a moment too soon for the people who showed up early. >> after all the hype i am glad it is finally starting but because i am also in the travel industry i am tickled to death

when this is over san francisco will be left with a fabulous new cruise ship terminal. and we really need that in this city. >> we come back out here live you can see those people there wait inch for the ribbon cutting ceremony for the park. organizers tell me tickets are still available for the official opening ceremonies that take place at 3:00 today at the concert venue when the teams will be introduced, tomorrow the excitement begins when the boats begin racing. >> today's opening ceremonies come as the director of the america's cup race warns the race could be cancelled, teams from new zealand and italy have filed protests over a recommendation to require larger heavier rudder elevators, those help control the pitch of the boat. the america's cup international jury is set to meet monday to hear the protests. the regatta director says if

the jury allows the original elevators he will tell the coast guard he doesn't think it is safe and they would with draw the permit. some people were awakened after their building was hit by a falling tree. the tree was uprooted around 4:30 a.m. on chateau way and leaned right into that building. 4 units were evacuated, no injuries reported, an arborist told us the recent hot weather is to blame and told our crew the roots dry out because the moisture gathers during the top of the trees during that hot weather. they are warning dog owners about poisoned meatballs in that area, a dog found one yesterday andate one and got sick, this is video of that dog and he is recovering at the vet and they recovered the others and turned them over to the

detrimental. >> the school told us 85,000 students that classes will continue. they can still graduate and credits will transfer, they vow to appeal and make improvements, otherwise city college will have to shut down. san francisco is preparing for its big 4th of july fireworks show tonight. [ cheers ] >> fireworks will be launched from the municipal pier and a barge near the wharf. they promise a spectacular display with colors and combinations, the best places are the city piers or marine head lands but you should expect them to become crowded quickly to get there early, the san francisco fireworks show starts at 9:30, muni is running on that schedule and will add extra transportation. they will all operate sunday schedules as well but there will be additional trains tonight for people headed out

off tonight legally and illegally but police are also promising to crack down, janine de la vega tells us how tough they will be and how people feel about it. >> reporter: this fireworks stand had people waiting before it even opened this morning. >> when you light it and it just going and blows up. >> reporter: those fireworks are legal in the city of gilroy, you can only buy them if you are a resident. he was the first customer in line to stock up. >> does illegal stuff get snuck in from time to time? >> you see it flying from -- in the air but i could not comment on that. >> customers here are charged a 6% fee that goes toward paying for extra police officers looking for people setting off the illegal kind. throughout santa clara county police and deputies will be apprehending violators, in san mateo county, where all fireworks are prohibited
