let's check your weather and traffic. steve has a cool down for us today. >> pretty big one. a lot of people asking when are you going to cool things down? as if i had any control. mother nature has pretty good control this morning. there is a bigger fog bank and a really strong sea breeze for some. here is sal. good morning. looking a the the san mateo bridge that traffic looks good heading out to the high-rise. also the morning's compute is doing well if you are on the golden gate bridge. we are following breaking news coming in from richmond. two people have died in a house fire. it started around a -- ktvu has a crew on the way to the scene. we'll bring you more in 30

minutes. now back to our continuing coverage of the bart labor dispute there is not a permanent deal yet, but trains are going to start rolling later today. we have team coverage from the bart charter bus service to an update on the ongoing negotiations. we begin this morning with tara moriarty at the west oakland part station. >> reporter: yeah this is the first time we have seen the lights go in on the station. if we pan over to the left, you can see there are charter buses here in the already passer somewheres are rea r in contrast forever on a sale of 1- 10. ten being close to striking a a deal. but there is sometime.

state mediators -- >> i'm confident that we will achieve an agreement in the next 30 days. . and we will do everything we know how to do to achieve that. but i want to be genuine in saying the issues that divide us remain. so it will require both parties to be determined. >> reporter: the trains would be rolling by. she had been criticized by union workers for not being at the negotiating table. it was the first time they had seen her all week. so good news for now. let's see where we are in a month. we'll stay here this morning where the charter buses are on stand by. due to the holiday we haven't seen much out here.

ktvu janine de la vega is live in fremont. riders are waiting to get on board. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning,day. these buses have been filling up fast. this is bus number four, i believe. three buses have left so far here from fremont. but there is no line. there was a big rush in the morning earlier. these buses are lined up on civic center drive. most commuters say they are happy bart service is resuming. let's go to the video of the line of people waiting at 5:00 a.m.. they started boarding. bart are be sending free charter buses to the five locations. as soon as each one fills up, the buses will lee and then go creekly to san francisco. there will be no stops in west

oakland. commuters are relieved the bus strike has been halted but concerned about the future. >> i worry after 30 days i hope they change their mind not to do this again. this is really horrible. do they not have family using the bart? you know. >> reporter: bart trains will start operating for service at 3:00 p.m. but the free charter buses will still be able on a first come first serve basis. the trip home from san francisco will be a direct ride. each will again have seven buses. service begins for that at 3:00 p.m. and the last bus will leave at 7:00 p.m.. so you still need to arrive before that. back out here live, again this bus right here is half full and there is three more chartered buses waiting behind it. still plenty of room.

other victims have died from this fatal fire. still fire crews from richmond fire department and richmond police are here. coroner's van is here as well. they wheeled out the body around 5-10 minutes ago. for more we will bring. >> right now the fire is under investigation. we had our fire companies arrive on scene. we had a converted garage on fire. initial size up we had victims inside. we did a search of the building. we found one person outside that was treated right away and transported to kizer hospital and then to st. francis burn center. the other victims war found in the residence. they were coulded on it was a

family of eight and three lived in the converted garage. >> reporter: any other injuries to report? >> no. >> reporter: any cause? it seems the fire was quick to started. >> yeah the cause is under investigation. that will be ongoing for the rest of the morning. >> reporter: in terms of having this garage conversion, do you know what the rules are for having that? is it illegal to do that? >> reporter: that -- >> that will be done by the fire prevention bureau. they had extension cords running back to the building which lets us know it wasn't under code with the building department. >> reporter: so again an update two people are dead this morning. one person sent to the hospital for injuries sustained from this fire early this morning.

a little boy was killed yesterday in the fourth of july holiday parade in edmond,

oklahoma. the 21-year-old man was seen sleeping inside a truck near the university of washington on tuesday. he was arrested the next day after university police realized that the truck was stolen. they contacted seattle police and the fbi after finding weapons and explosives. >> we have no idea what his intentions are. this is a very active information -- active investigation. >> the man is from nevada and the truck was stolen from montana. authorities say there is no reason to believe the university was under any threat. time is 6:16. happening right now in sanford, florida the mother of trayvon martin just took the witness

blamed for holding back job growth. good morning, scott. >> reporter: it has been steady growth in the construction industry that is good news. in part because of the rebound housing market. government hiring is still painfully slow. still jobs being lost in the public sector. in the meantime 115,000 federal workers off the job today. many here in washington furloughed because of the budget crisis. epa workers, hod workers, irs workers too. one said sequestration is stifling job growth all together. >> this is very, very dangerous. it's a very hard time. people are living on the edge any way. and then you come up with this. this is adding insult to injuries. >> reporter: and the defense department getting furrows of

civilian employees. more than half million nation- wide. live in washington scott mcfarland ktvu channel 2 news. new from rome pope francis has cleared the way for pope john paul ii to be cannonnized as a saint. pope francis also decided to cannonnize another pope. pope john xxiii. students and professors at city college of san francisco are hoping to save their school from closing. on wednesday a national accrediting commission announced that city college failed to meet standards and it will lose its accreditation next july. a coalition of students and professors will hold a meeting in its plans to keep the doors open. new reports say the bolt problem on the new bay bridge may not be as serious as first thought. officials say hundreds of bolts

made from the same steal as anchor rods that broke in march have been tested and so far there are no signs of failure. high levels of hydrogen reportedly caught 32 steal bolts on the bridge. test results will be officially announced next week. time now 6:19. sal, you taking care of the toll plaza? >> yes. but it doesn't need a lot of taking care of dave and claudine. let's go out and show you this picture. the traffic at the toll plaza looks good. you can see that it's moving like a weekend. kind of looks like a weekend commute. because it is a weekend for a lot of people that are taking the day after the fourth off. in case you are just joining us bart has temporarily agreed -- basically bart -- let's start this again. bart service will be running at 3:00 after they have reached a temporary agreement. how is that? that is good. they will be running at 3:00

this afternoon. if you are trying to get into the city, bart service is not available this morning. they do have shuttle buses running from some of the east bay stations this morning to help you get in the city. let's take a look at interstate 880 in oakland the traffic looks good in both directions. southbound traffic looks good all the way down to the san mateo bridge if you are taking the bridge across to the peninsula a little bit of fog. that might effect flights at sfo which we're watching for you as well. we've been looking at the commutes here. there is a car off the roadway in marin county. southbound 101 has been light from novato to san rafael. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. we have a much bigger fog bank. that is for sure. it was down below the deck the last couple of days. there is a rather robust sea breeze. cooler forecast across the board. i know folks up in lake county

-- the trend is to bring temperatures down. much, much cooler lows than we have seen in a long, long time. we had mid 70s to 80. that is not the case today. fog will continue to thicken up here. and last hot day was yesterday. 5-20 degrees cooler today. on the edge of that it can be very, very -- temperatures slide back to near average for many. or below probably by the coast. much cooler into saturday and things look pretty quiet for early next week. the polish airline has canceled one dream liner. they were the first european airline to buy the dream liners. the airline says one problem was with the flight tracking system. they will call both of them

check out this new video of an escaped inmate literally being taken down by an alert customer inside a store. there is a bear hug from behind. he was tackled and held until police arrived in ashton, ohio. he is a convicted sexual predator who escaped wednesday night. a flier with his mug shot was posted inside that store. >> i see this guy come up to the register, i'm like double glancing. i'm like is that him? and i finally see a customer and he's like yeah that is the guy. >> store clerk says meyers purchased tea, a snickers bar and lighter and he has to use the phone because his car has been broken down. time now 6:26. a san francisco police officer is being called a hero for rescuing an elderly woman from an apartment fire in japan

and yes two people are dead. one at st. francis burn center. what is the very latest details and what you can tell us? >> reporter: the latest details we have our fire investigation bureau here to investigate the fire for the cause. like you said, the fire came in at 2:30 this morning. and we had our initial companies come on to extinguish the fire. and search for victims. >> reporter: any word on a cause? i'm looking at the house right now. it looks like it was placed at that location. >> reporter: it's under investigation. we did have extension cords that were running back to that structure. and right now they are investigating to see the cause of it. >> reporter: can you tell us a little bit about the family? i understand this is a family of three that lived in that section. correct? >> reporter: they had eight total. three of the family members lived in the converted garage. >> reporter: and the victim

that is currently at st. francis he is the son? >> the son. >> reporter: and how is he doing this morning? >> he was critical when he left the scene enroute to the hospital. and we're waiting for updates. >> reporter: and what is the latest in terms of the investigation. we understand investigators are here. >> the investigators are here. they are trying to piece back how the fire was started. >> reporter: so again two people are dead this morning. one person in critical. again one at st. francis burn center. they got the call around 2:40. but definitely not good news for a family that lived here. 6:33 now. we want to continue our coverage of the bart labor dispute. thousands of striking workers will return to their jobs later today. they could walk out again after 30 days. tara moriarty is live at the

west oakland bart station where charter buss have been picking -- buses have been picking up riders. >> reporter: we have seen one bus leave this morning. so obviously a lot of folks probably had the week off or the day off for the holiday. but for the first time this week you can see the lights are on inside the bart station behind me here. and the trains should be rolling by 3:00 this afternoon. passengers obviously feeling relief right now. you can also see relief on the faces of bart management. however union leaders still seemed frustrated. one union president told us on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the closest to striking a deal they were still at a three. there is time state mediators got them to try to work out their differences. if bart and the unions can't come up with a contract by august 4th, the strike could resume. >> we are putting bart on notice they have 30 days to right this ship and insure our

members get the contract they deserve. and that the riding public gets the bart services they deserve. thank you. >> reporter: bart's general manager grace announced trains would be rolling today by 3:00. she had been criticized by union workers for not being at the negotiating table. union leaders said this is the first time they had seen her all week. so good news for now. but we'll see where we are in one month. live from oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. commuters still need to find a way to get to work today. even if they plan on taking bart home. our team coverage continues at 6:45 where bart is offering free charter bus service and what passengers are saying about a week of commuting chaos. oakland police also investigating two homicides this morning. police found a man shot to death in a car on 92nd avenue and cherry at 12:30 this morning. the car was up on the sidewalk. it appears the man was shot as

will he was trying to get investigate. new this morning an overnight brush fire in the oakland hills appears to have started in a former girl scout cabin. katie utehs is live where she just spoke with firefighters that are still on scene. >> reporter: oakland police still have the roadway blocked off. if you look behind me, you can see the long winding road and the hills firefighters had to get up to get to this fire. here's video we shot over night as crews battled flames fueled by dry brush in joaquin miller park. the fire ignited around 11:30. it appears it started in a former girl scout cabin. he says it's no longer there. the cabin was used officially in 1983. there are many homes near

joaquin miller park as well which led to tense moments for neighbors last night. >> we set up contingencies for evacuations. luckily we didn't have to do that. the fire crews did an excellent job of responding up here. containing the fire and putting it out. >> reporter: the fire charred two or three acres and sent goats scrambling. you can hear them crying out. they are in the area to help with fire abatement. the. we dead feed a -- in our next report i'll tell you why they say it was a problem. live in oakland katie utehs ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:37. let's check in with sal. highway 24 how is it doing? >> well, it's doing okay. 24 another one of those freeways that have been taking

a lot of the drivers that could not take bart. we're looking at it now. and again we're very lucky that today a lot of people are not going because there is no bart service as you know. but westbound 24 looks good between walnut creek and oakland. we're also looking at the commute here on the bay bridge approach. the traffic is looking nice. there are no major problems getting into the city. if you are driving in from va lay to pi fell the traffic has been light. it looks like a lot of people are taking the day after the fourth off. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. we have a west wind. the consensus is good job, steve. [ laughter ] i figured it was time. you can see west wind kicking in. boy, i will tell you the low clouds are banked up and making a strong push inland. there a west wind. that tells you i found west at 40. yesterday was the last day of the 100-degree temps. 110 by the way in sacramento.

102 fairfield. antioch 105. livermore 103 today. lows are down about 15-18 degrees compared to 24 hours ago. i think the highs will follow suit as well. much, much bigger fog bank. it's allowed itself to lift a little bit. instead of about 79 in antioch, it's 62. 57 concord. 57 san rafael. napa is in there. low 60s san jose. a lot of 50s. these were much, much warmer yesterday. a lot of fog and low clouds. much as i've seen in a long time. the last hot day was yesterday. at least from this pattern. 5-20 degrees cooler. it might be a little warmer saturday but nothing approaching what we had. windy, cooler. low clouds. pretty big fog bank. temps drop inland. 60s and 70s and 90s. much cooler into saturday.

good morning. a lot of fog. strong no doubt west winds. so temperatures inland coming way down. a good 15-20 degrees for some. welcome back. good morning, to you. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we're following for you right now at 6:43. a deadly house fire in richmond has killed two people. another person is in critical condition. it started in a converted garage that a family was living in. cause of that fire is still under investigation. firefighters in oakland say an over night brush fire in the oakland hills apparently started at a former girl scout cabin. it started about 11:30 last

night. burned about three acres. later on today empty bart stations will be filled again. bart service returns at 3:00 this afternoon. union workers have agreed that going back to their jobs today for 30 days. while both sides continue to negotiate a permanent new contract. it's going to be another tough commute for passengers who rely on bart. janine de la vega is live this morning where bart workers are running charter buses. you got another bus behind you? >> reporter: claudine, yeah. just take a look. you can see this is the fifth bus that has been filled up. behind this bus there are still two empty buses back there. i want to have us take a look at what it looks like here on the bus. this is almost foul. this is the first morning where we are actually seeing smiles because people are happy that the strike is halted.

this is what it looked like at 5:00 a.m.. there was a long line of people waiting to get on the first free chartered bus to san francisco. there are some changes to service entasias many buses will be running. seven will be at the five east bay stations. each bus holds about 50 passengers. and as soon as they fill up they will travel directly to san francisco. they will not be a stop at west oakland which is happening previously. service will last until each bus is filled or 8:00 a.m.. which ever comes first. bart riders are pleased the strike has been put on hold. so are some of the nonunion part employees that have been pulled from the regular jobs to assist during the strike. >> greatly relieved. it's our duty to serve the public. we are doing what we can to ease the pain. but we are also working our day jobs too.

>> reporter: there will still be free afternoon bart services. bus service begins at 3:00 p.m.. the last bus leaves at 7:00 p.m.. so they are telling people to still alive before then. again it's all on a first come first serve. this bus is completely full. many of these people are happy they don't have to rely on always having to take these buses. happy service will resume again at 3:00 p.m. today. but most of them will most likely be taking the free afternoon buses. back here to the east bay. reporting live from fremont janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. charter buss are not your only option. all major public transit agencies in the bay area including ac transit are running on normal weekday schedules today. some agent sills like ac transit will run additional

shuttles but the bay ferry will not have more fire works display in southern california turned dangerous for spectators. some of the fire works accidentally went off in the crowd. our reporter al is live. you talk to people who were there. they saw the horror and panic. >> reporter: by all accounts this was a really, really scary people. i talked to people ever since this happened. it happened here. you can see the debris field here. now what happened just shortly after this fire works display started, something triggered a malfunction and that had fire works going sideways. take a look.

>> reporter: you can hear people there saying something is not right there. and there was something that wasn't right. the people in the crowd were getting heat by debris. there was intense heat. 28 people in all were injured in this thing. four seriously. there were about 16 with minor injuries that had to go to the hospital. there were many others that were triaged here, treated, and released. i talked to people this morning that are still numb. they are still in shock. they still can't get over it. >> i panicked things were coming at us. i really thought we were going to get burned. really thought it was that close. >> you could hear other people screaming. running, diving out of the way. >> reporter: what are you feeling? >> i feel bad for the kids. the people that were injured. because when you see them getting wrapped up, it's not something you want to see. >> reporter: not something you

want to see at all. you can see people left chairs behind. they left barbecue grills behind. i saw a little baby's shoe out there in the field. just all kinds of things. people just got out as fast as they could. police back out here investigating to. trying to tie up loose ends. but this looks like an industrial accident. >> thank you. time now 6:49. in stockton firefighters think illegal fire works started this big pyre at a packing plant -- big fire at a packing plant. now those flames are expected to burn until tomorrow. they have found evidence suggesting illegal fire works. your time is 6:49. let's head to sal to check a look at the roads. take a look at the roads sal. how are things looking?

>> things are doing well. right now we are looking at the toll plaza of the bay bridge. and looking at the commute. bart is not running. bart labor unions have agreed to go back to work today. this is a temporary agreement as both sides negotiate a new contract in the next 30 days. bart says trains will begin running at 3:00 this afternoon. just in time for a lot of events in san francisco. let's take a look at the san mateo bridge. the traffic here looks good. definitely overcast which may effect the flights into and out of san francisco international airport. on the nimitz freeway southbound and northbound we had a couple earlier problems. they are not an issue. the traffic so far looks good if you are driving south into the south bay. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. here you go. for those that have been looking for the fog, it's here. it's back in a big way. i kid you not. about four hours ago it's there. it has come roaring in. that tapers down a little bit

when you get the cloud cover. low clouds and fog are back. they are up and down the coast. it looks like the high pressure system has lost out and on its way to the desert southwest. today many areas will stay cool and foggy. much, much colder lows. 15-18-degrees on some. we will tyke that on the high temps as well. they will come down. all that high cloud moisture and thunderstorms really calming down. yesterday was the last day. 110 in sacramento yesterday. a lot of 100s yesterday. the trend is bring the temps down. that is what we will do here. not only that but it will be a cold, foggy day for some. 50s and 60s near the coast. 70s around the bay. and 80s or 90s inland. but with a west wind. there is a rather howling breeze. some of the higher elevations some of the usual suspects.

much cooler into saturday. does look like a little warmer weather. nothing too outrageous. the price of crude oil is edging up again. it's closing in on $102 a barrel over concerns the egyptian political crisis might effect mideast supplies. egypt has not produced oil but does control the canal which is used to trance port 1.2 million barrels of oil a day. >> you want me top wear a mask? >> there come a time when good men must wear masks. >> movie industry analysts says disney may be on its way to $100 million loss on the lone ranger. the western based on the old radio and tv shows stars johnny depp. the movie costs $325 million to

welcome back. time now 6:55. we have new information about that water main break in downtown danville. the water levels went down over night. however, some streets are shut down this morning so that debris can be clear. this morning hearts is closed between prospect and railroad avenues. rose street and linda mason they are also shut down. firefighters scrambled to put out two fires that broke out just two blocks from each other in san jose. look at this cell phone video taken by a neighbor. the fire destroyed a home on sydney drive about 5:30 last night. more than 60 firefighters were out there fighting to keep the flames from spreading. the fire did cause minor heat damage to two other homes. >> it was horrific.

the longer we were out there, the fire kept coming closer and closer to our house. it was literally licking our fence. >> while firefighters are battling that fire, trees also caught fire on piedmont road. the cause of the fire is still being investigated. happening today more america's cup celebrations a ceremonial parade of both. gets under way at 11:00 a.m.. the parade is scheduled to start at pier 14 in san francisco and it will continue on to the marina green. huge crowds turn out san francisco for the big fourth of july celebration. those are just some of the 4,000 explosives used during this year's show. some say the crowd was bigger than in years past but there were fewer people from the east
