we have team coverage. crews explaining what it took to get trains into position and who is on them now. first, resentments are lingering. debora villalon live at the west oakland bart station with how bart hopes riders can put that behind them. >> reporter: it's been a nightmare week. endless lines, hassles. bart and its workers hope riders can forgive, if not forget. tough to wash away the worry of the past week. but that whistle signals the end of the stretch for this working mother of three. >> my boss had to pick me up for work. plans got canceled because we couldn't travel to where we need to go. i'm happy everything is back up and running. >> i want to tell the riders that we regret the inconvenience. >> reporter: union regret is tempered by the fact they may

strike again if there's no contract in 30 days. >> we don't want to hold the public hostage. >> reporter: ask those to describe what issues remain? >> i don't have that much time. >> reporter: many customers are not laughing about their lost time, money and peace of mind. and may not be as loyal as before. >> i thought bart was the most convenient way. but it turns out the ferry might be a little better for me. >> reporter: our employees work very hard. they deal with -- >> we ask you respect them. >> reporter: bart warning against giving ab employee a hard time about going on strike. how's it feel today? >> great. >> reporter: like you never left? >> well, it's great to be back at work. >> we want to send a strong message. if you lay a hand on one of our employees, you'll get kicked out of the bart system for up

to a year. >> reporter: stiff penalties are part of a new state law. remember there's no actual deal. both sides have a month to keep talking and agree on a contract. when i asked a union negotiator how close they are on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being finished, she said 3. reporting live, debora villalon, ktvu channel 2 news. our team coverage continues now with tom vacar who just got off a bart train. tom is here to explain what it took to get the system back up and running after five days. >> reporter: it's a fair question. the question is this, if it the deal was struck last night, why did it take until late today to get the trains rolling? bart's highly complex, automated system, it relies on human employees to make it

work. that work began many hours ago. with every day checks as well as special situations. >> they went on strike after the pride parade. we broke records that night. who knows what the trains are looking like this morning. >> reporter: the most critical factors come from the fact that rarely are bart cars idle and unattended. >> they're starting safety checks. some are manual. some are powering up. >> reporter: so now that the technical side is caught up, the more delicate issue of public and rider relations must take its course. reporting live, tom vacar, ktvu channel 2 news. more details now on how much the five strike days cost bart. according to the transit agency the charter buses cost $100,000 per day. bart lost an estimated $1 million in fare revenue for each day. the total loss was about $3.9 million.

that factors in the money that bart saved by not having to pay union employees or pay for the electricity to run the trains and the stations. the unions representing thousands of oakland city workers were back at the bargaining table today. workers walked off the job on monday for a one-day strike. the union says the employees pay has been significantly cut over the past five years. lawmakers this week approved a 4.5% pay raise for about 100,000 unionized state workers. members of the state's largest public employees union will receive the pay raise by july 1st of 2015. governor jerry brown's office negotiabilitied the deal. things are not going exactly as planned as america's cup events got underway in san francisco. a parade of racing boats didn't

materialize due to high winds. the parade was scaled back and the time trials were canceled. the first round of quaff qualifying races for sunday. the skipper for the italian today indicated they might not compete. they are contesting unfair rule changes. >> we want to -- we'll make our plan. >> if you don't turn up, you don't win races, you don't win points. >> an international jury is expected to decide the matter on monday. new at 6, a man is recovering after being shot in the face and police are saying the incident may have been motivated by road rage. jade hernandez spoke to police in asaphia low al toe and is here. >> reporter: tonight police know one thing. they found a man shot in the face along this block just

before 1:00. this is beach tree. now why the man was shot, they are still investigating. >> witnesses and victims became uncooperative. also gave different accounts of the incident. throughout the investigation. >> reporter: we spoke to officer rock stillwell. the department is investigating this as a possible road rage shooting despite sketchy details. police say they're not sure if the shooting happened in their city. neither the man who was shot nor his passenger would say where the incident began. only after a minor accident the parties in two vehicles got into a fight. that's when someone pulled out a gun. he was conscious as paramedics took him to the hospital. the man is expected to live. police say he was still in the hospital. no one else was hurt.

now officers say this incident doesn't have anything to do with fourth of july fireworks, but continues to hope someone in this neighborhood will call them with an anonymous tip about what happened just before 1. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco police asking for the public's help in finding a man who brutally attacked and robbed a woman. it was caught on surveillance tape. the video may be disturbing. that having been said, this is the tape that shows a female victim being robbed of her purse and smart phone by a group of five people. one of the men kick the victim in the head so forcefully the woman is knocked out. >> victim who is down on the ground already and then you have the suspect coming back and kicking the victim forcefully in the face. so violently that it knocks the victim out. >> tonight the victim is recovering at home. three men were arrested. the person who kicked the victim is still at large. police say the group may be behind other robberies and

assaults as well. prosecutors charged the man arrested for a double homicide inside a wing stop restaurant with two counts of murder. police say jermaine of oakland killed two wing stop employees on monday. detectives say the shooting may have been caused by mistaken identity. they say that jermaine and another man had a confrontation with another customer and ran into the walk in freezer. when the two employees went to check on the two men, police say he opened fire and killed both of the employees. california lawmakers are trying to restore rules regarding domestic violation cases. the bill reverses language that would have made practices optional. under the scenario, the state would not have been required to pick up the cost of compliance as it must when it issues a mandate. the legislation heads to the assembly. fire investigators may know what sparked an overnight fire that left two people dead and their son in critical

condition. a neighbor took this cell phone video after 2:30 this morning in the 600 block of 21st street. firefighters found the converted garage engulfed in flames. that's where the victims were found. they're identified as bounkeo viengvilai and mearn lee pom. their son suffered burns over his body. investigators say they're narrowing their focus. >> in the rear we have the same cigarette butts, alcohol and remnants of fireworks into the rear and around the vicinity. >> neighbors say the victims and the rest of the family were having a party late into the night before the fire. investigators in oakland believe illegal fireworks caused two small fires last night. the flames were reported just after 11:30 in the 6000 block. the fires burned through about

1.5 acres. no one was hurt. an investigation is underway after a fourth of july fireworks show went wrong leaving dozens of people injured. in total, 28 people were treated for nonlife threatening injuries. police say a wood platform holding live fireworks tipped over just as the show was starting. a preliminary investigation shows at least one of the fireworks launching stations fell over. new reports unconfirmed that more poisoned meatballs are showing up in san francisco neighborhoods. i'll tell you where. a 25-degree drop in temperatures brings relief from a week of triple-digit heat. will the cool weather pattern continue? learn what went whereon and how this bay area hang glider was able to walk away alive.

today the poisonings may be spreading to new neighborhoods. our health and science editor discovered one theory that may exloin plaine motivation for leaving them out. jan is live with the story. >> reporter: in this neighborhood this afternoon animal care and control officers put out these poison alert signs warning people to take extra precautions for their pets and their young children. steven is nervous this afternoon. >> this is sick. it had is a sick person doing this. >> reporter: at animal internal medicine clinic, some of the 50 or so hamburger balls found so far with green and red bits,

meatball in the glen parks neighborhood. they're urging anyone with information to please contact authorities before there are any more deaths. reporting live, john fowler, ktvu channel 2 news. firefighters are watching for hot spots right now after a vegetation fire broke out last night. one of the hot spots flared up just before noon. we were there when fire crews jumped on the flames and prevented them from spreading. want original fire broke out about 9:30 last night. >> winds have the -- had the brush been of a greater size it would have pushed embers down into mill valley. >> fire crews plan to stay on the mountain tonight. marin county fire says the cause of the fire is under investigation, but fireworks have been ruled out. a lot of people are asking questions about a story we told you about concerning the marin county fair. earlier this week we reported to you about the county's new clothing guidelines to make

the dwight howard sweepstakes. warriors made several key chess moves today. golden state was one of five teams courting howard. sources report howard decided to sign with the houston rockets. no deal can be official until next wednesday. the biggest free agent is leaving the lakers after one year and headed for houston, warriors ownership signed a solid play baker and defender. warriors wanted to acquire denver swingman andre iguodala. today they signed him to a reported four-year deal. it's just an agreement. iguodala averages 15 points over 9 nba seasons. best warriors news may be the trades. three players traded to utah. it means taking off $24 million in salary cap space.
