good evening, everyone. i'm frank somerville. >> and i'm julie haener. breaking news out of san francisco. two women are dead tonight and a suspect is now under arrest. this after a shooting at the jewelrymart and gift center. >> that jewelrymart is located at 888 brannan. not far from rei. it's just around the corner from police headquarters. the specific store inside where this happened is called vic toga. noelle walker joins us from outside that jewelrymart now with the latest on this investigation. >> reporter: we're at the corner of 7th and bryant. about -- 7th and brannan. about 20 minutes ago the police chief updated the media. let's take a look at what's going on behind me. it's still an active scene. we've seen s.w.a.t. packing up their stuff. what i've also seen is occasionally along the sidewalk we'll see police escorting people from the jewelrymart building. we're told there are still 75

people left to evacuate. here's what we know. one lone gunman. two women are dead at that vic toga. they were either shot or stabbed. police are not sure which one. they have recovered both a revolver and a knife. one man was injured at that store. the suspect is in custody after running out of the building. police report seeing him covered in blood. the suspect fired shots at police in the middle of the street, in the middle of the day. police did not fire back. no one outside this building was hurt. >> given the fact he was firing the gun in the middle of the street in the mild pattern of the day, what were the chances that nobody on that street was going to be hurt? >> i mean, two people died in this event. another is seriously injured inside. so, you know, their families are in our thoughts and prayers. the fact that no officers or

bystanders were hit, sometimes it's nice to be lucky. >> reporter: now for a number of people they were told to stay inside their businesses on this street. the businesses on the street include pinterest, rei, and that jewelrymart. i said there are still 75 people inside that building that need to be escorted out. we did speak to a couple who was there getting their engagement rings fitted. they told us about the terror inside. >> it was a lot of screaming and just people running up and down the hallways frantic. for us it was just safer to run into the first jewelry store we saw and just hide in the back area. >> we ducked into a room and then they started locking the doors. from there they told us to get in the back of the building. we could see s.w.a.t. officers patrolling the building. >> reporter: so, again, to recap, two shot dead at the jewelrymart at 888 brannan

street. one person injured. one suspect in custody. police have recovered both a revolver and a knife. they are not sure if both or one was used in this crime. we are also told that the street is going to be closed, we're here at 7th and brannan. between 7th and 8th on brannan street closed for several hours while they complete this investigation and escort the remaining people out of that building at 888 brannan. reporting live in san francisco, noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. the property owners of 888 brannan issued this statement this afternoon. it says in part "we truly sadenned in the incident today. we extend our deepest sympathies to the families of those involved." the statement went on to say they are cooperating with police. developing news out of oakland. the search for missing daphne webb. the 21-month-old girl's picture is on the fbi's website. the girl was reported missing by her father on wednesday.

paul chambers spoke with the girl's older sister today. paul is in oakland with that. >> reporter: frank, we were at the courthouse waiting for john webb's appearance when an opportunity to talk to one of webb's older daughters. she can't believe what's happening to her father. she really misses her sister. >> i pray my sister comes back home safely. >> reporter: we spoke with one of john webb's adult daughters who is taking care of her grandmother who has dementia until her father is released from police custody. >> this is too much. it's a shocker. i don't believe my dad did anything to my sister. i would never think he would do anything to put her in harm's way. >> reporter: daphne webb was added to the fbi's kidnap and missing persons major. the girl was reported missing by her father wednesday morning. since then oakland police arrested him for child endangerment. >> i believe my dad and i'm

sticking by the story. i just pray that whatever is going on, i pray that daphne is still alive. >> reporter: she hasn't seen her little sister in about a year. she was relieved to hear the alameda district attorney's office said no charges were filed against her father, which means for now webb will be free to go and can help look for his daughter. >> i just pray wherever she is she comes back. if someone drops her off at the hospital or police station, just something. i wouldn't believe my dad would do anything to hurt his kids. >> reporter: police handed out 200 of his flowers -- fliers today. about a half hour from now, the community is supposed to get together and hold a candle light individual where webb was supposedly last seen. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. >> she's described as having short, curly black hair and

brown eyes. now to our continuing coverage of the crash of asiana airlines flight 214. san francisco general hospital announced today a third victim has now died. officials say it was a girl, but they did not give her age. she had been in intensive care and died this morning. two adults also remain in critical condition at sf general. four others are hospitalized with various injuries. san francisco police today confirmed that one of the teenagers who died on board that flight was indeed struck by a fire truck. a police spokesperson says she was on the tarmac and was underneath foam, making it difficult for first responders to see her. it still is not known though whether that teenager died from the injuries from the crash or from being hit by the fire truck. the san mateo county coroner's office says it will be a few weeks before it can determine her exact cause of death. mike mibach is live at sf

general. mike, good news for travelers going through sf tonight. >> reporter: that's right. great news at san francisco international. runway opened within the last hour. all four runways now fully operational for the first time in nearly a week. as for the wreckage of flight 214, there it is over my shoulder. the charred remains of what was once a boeing 777. >> close up and seeing this. >> reporter: all day, one at a time. >> lucky that all the people got out. >> reporter: they came to look at what's left of 214. >> i can't believe i can stand here and see this wreckage up close and personal. >> reporter: the tail, the engines, the wheels, part of the cabin and not much more. >> every bit of it is just looks like it was horrible. it looks like it was the most scary thing these people could have been through. >> reporter: crews lifted the wreckage and rolled it from the south side of the airport to the north. >> the moment the ntsb said

it's yours. >> reporter: once moved, maintenance trucks rolled and began critical repairs on the damaged runway. >> we need to address the spilled jet fuel, the hydraulic fluid. we have started repaving the runway. need to fix lighting. repaint sections of the runway. >> reporter: and all that was done very quickly. runway 28 back open. the wreckage will probably stay on the property for at least another week. live at sfo tonight, mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. okay, runway 28 left at sfo reopened just about an hour ago. sfo tweeted this photo showing a southwest airlines jet just about to touch down. it was the first plane to land on that newly repaired runway. tonight we want to take a moment and say that we are sorry. earlier today during our noon newscast we misidentified the pilots in the asiana airlines

crash. we made several mistakes when we received this information. first of all, we never read the names out loud. phonetically sounding out. to our phone call to the ntsb where the person confirmed the spellings, we never asked that person to give us their position within the agency. we heard this person verify the information without questioning who they were and we rushed the names on to our noon newscast. within the last few minuted ntsb issued this statement. quote, the national transportation safety board apologized for inaccurate and offensive names that were mistakenly confirmed as those of the pilots. a summer intern acted outside the scope of his authority when he erroneously confirmed the names of the flight crew on the aircraft. we work hard to ensure that only appropriate factual information regarding an investigation is released and we deeply regret today's incident. appropriate actions will be taken to ensure that such a serious error is not repeated.

now we've been with this statement from the ntsb -- we accept full responsibility for this mistake. we issued an apology later in the noon newscast. we apologized on our website and social media sites. we have a lot of good people at channel 2. on behalf of all of us, i want to tell you that we pride ourselves on getting it right and having the highest of standards and integrity. clearly, today that did not happen. we made a mistake. so again from all of us here at ktvu, we can only offer our sincerest apology in this case. now declare you spouses for life. >> that was attorney general kamala harris performing a same- sex wedding. she was performing it for the berkeley couple who went to the supreme court to fight proposition 8. now it is possible similar marriages may come to a halt.

prop 8 supporters today asked the state supreme court to stop same-sex marriages in another attempt to reinstitute the gay marriage ban. the group filed a petition asking the court to tell county clerks to stop issuing same-sex marriage licenses. the group claims the ninth circuit court's ruling only applied to the couples who filed the suit and says governor brown exceeded his authority when he ordered all county clerks to issue marriage licenses. homeland security secretary janet napolitano could soon have a new job. she has been nominated to become the first female president of the university of california system. the board of regents will consider her nomination at a meeting in san francisco next thursday. the selection committee says napolitano is an untraditional candidate, but has led large public agent agencies. >> someone who has led a state,

someone who has led department of homeland start, incredibly complex organization. would probably welcome a challenge to lead an organization like the university of california. >> current uc president announced earlier this year he is stepping down at the end of august after more than 5 years in that position. we have new information tonight on that deadly apartment fire in redwood city sound. the coroner's office has identified the man who died as 48-year-old darren pine. fire officials say more than 20 people were hurt, including several firefighters. about 100 residents were displaced. there is no word what sparked the fire. investigators believe it was accidental. cal osha is investigating a deadly accident that left a janitor dead. it happened last night at 10:00 at the grocery outlet. kasays an employee found 43-

encampment. the city is taking action. that encampment has sparked worries about hygiene, fire, even environmental concerns. john sasaki live in pleasant hill with more on what the city is planning to do here. >> reporter: we're in the mcdonald's parking lot across from an apartment complex and a shopping center over there. what is right in the middle is a creek overpass where homelessness has become a safety concern. runs over a creek next to toys r us and in n out burger. just under the roadway is a place that at least two people currently call home. >> it's just, it's like an animal kingdom. >> reporter: the homeless who often set up camp here and can be seen from nearby apartments raise concerns for others. >> are the conditions, not only the filth, but the fire dangers of them lighting something on fire. >> reporter: it's become serious enough with concerns about crime, fire danger, even

water pollution in the creek that some area residents have complained to the city. >> could spill into it where people are living, there's going to be waste. so garbage, waste, stuff like that. >> reporter: police posted signs warning the homeless to get out by next week. >> we'll call public works with the city and they'll assist us in removing property. >> reporter: that leaves the people who live here scrambling. >> you're not welcome anywhere. it's okay to live and exist, just as long as you're not seen, heard or known that you exist. >> hopefully things work out and i get some housing with my social worker. because medical issues and stuff. >> reporter: police say they'll be clearing the camp on tuesday as has happened in the past. they'll try to get anyone still here connected with county housing, even mental health services. we have new video of an accident in vallejo. a tow truck was in the process of repossessing a woman's car around 2:30 this afternoon from

a strip mall. a witness says the woman tried to drive her car off the tow truck and ended up crashing into a concrete pillar. no word from police whether that drivers was cited. a popular japanese-based clothing store chain is expanding. uniqlo opened in san francisco's union square last october. the company plans to open stores in malls in emoryville, san mateo and santa clara. ferry riders will be paying to park at the terminal. the golden gate bridge district voted to start public outreach for a daily parking fee. it will be between $2 and $5. the district has been discussing charges for parking for years as ferry ridership grows. officials say ridership is up about 6 to 8% in recent months compared to last year.
