more on the stellar performance by pitcher tim lincecum. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news on 2. >> i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. another cool morning out there, but rosemary joining us now with a look at what we can expect today. if we liked yesterday -- >> we are right there in that ballpark, claudia. we are going to see another nice day. the clouds along the coastline into the bay this morning, temperatures similar for most. and into the afternoon, i think we will see just a minor change and it will be in the way of a start of a cool-down. for some of us, slightly cooler, and it will be a cooler path as we head into the first half of next week. i'll have your temperatures, coming up. we begin with developing news. the fallout across the country from the acquittal of murder defendant george zimmerman. >> we, the jury, find george zimmerman not guilty. so say we all, foreperson.

>> well, shortly after the verdict was read, zimmerman smiled and then shook hands with his attorneys, after the jury cleared him of all charges in connection with the shooting death of the florida teenager, trayvon martin. the jury, comprised of six women, deliberated for about 15 hours before they acquitted him. the verdict immediately sparked protests nationwide, including here in the bay area. in oakland, some demonstrations actually turned violent and destructive. alex savidge joins us live from oakland where the store owners are cleaning up. alex? >> reporter: well, yes. quite a bit of cleanup to do here in downtown oakland this morning, following the zimmerman verdict last night. this is a lot of what you'll see around the downtown area, a lot of smashed windows and store fronts, businesses that have been vandalized. what you're looking at here is the sears store on telegraph. you can see just how many windows were smashed up last night as the protest moved through this area. quite a few windows broken during what became a heated

demonstration. in one case, some protesters even set fire to a dumpster in the middle of the street last night. well over 100 people initially gathered outside city hall, then began to march through downtown oakland, following the acquittal of george zimmerman in the shooting death of trayvon martin. police officers were called in to disperse the crowd. they came from several different agencies, including the sheriff's office and the chp. many of the protesters wore masks as they broke store windows, vandalized a bank and spray-painted buildings. some of the graffiti called for violence against zimmerman. some called for violence against police officers. the neighborhood watch volunteer claimed he shot the unarmed teen in self-defense. demonstrators last night say the guilty verdict is an injustice. >> i don't feel like it's self- defense. no. you killed a little boy. that little boy ain't gonna

have a chance to do nothing because you felt like it was okay and that you were so big that you couldn't handle him by fighting. you had to shoot him. like it wasn't that serious. >> reporter: vandals also targeted the superior courthouse at oak and 12th street. there was spray paint around the building and at least one window of the courthouse was smashed as well. while there was a lot of damage done in the downtown area last night, i just got an update from oakland police. say they during this demonstration last night, there were no injuries. and oakland police also say there were no arrests made. but obviously, a lot of cleanup for a lot of the store owners to do this morning. smashed windows everywhere you look in the downtown area. live this morning in oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. now, across the bay in san francisco, another demonstration is planned for this afternoon. >> trayvon martin! >> last night, protesters

marched down valencia street. organizers say they had been prepared in case of an acquittal and they had made hundreds of picket signs declaring that zimmerman was guilty. >> that's why we're here, to say that trayvon martin deserves justice, not this travesty that happened in florida. >> san francisco police had patrol cars and vans following the demonstrators. officers say the rally was peaceful. today's protest is set for 4:00 this afternoon at market and powell. >> when do want it? >> now! >> demonstrators gathered to protest the verdict. as a precaution, the lapd issued a citywide alert. it extended the shift of officers and police did not respond to low-priority calls. but the demonstration stayed peaceful. new this morning, police are looking for the person who shot and killed a teenager in east san jose. it happened around 1:00 this

morning. officers responded to a party and found a 17-year-old boy inside a car with a single gunshot wound. he was taken to the hospital where police say he later died. anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call police. all lanes on interstate 580 on oakland have reopened after a shooting shut down the freeway for several hours. police say a gunman shot into a car and injured one person. the victim was taken to the hospital and is said to be in stable condition. the incident shut down most of the interstate near seminary avenue but the freeway reopened just about three hours later. so far, no arrests have been made. a vallejo woman is facing child endangerment charges after police say she abandoned her one-year-old son in a gas station bathroom. police released this still photo from a surveillance video. they say the video shows the woman pushing a stroller into the bathroom, staying there for nine minutes, and then walking

away. 22-year-old joia hulkill was arrested after someone recognized her from the still photo. police say the child was left alone for about one hour but was not hurt. the time now is 7:06. now to our continuing coverage of the asiana flight 214 crash. the families of the first two teenagers killed in that crash say they're touched by the outpouring of support. more than 100 people attended a memorial in burlingame just across from sfo. while a buddhist organization organized the event, other groups also took part, as a show of solidarity. the parents of ye mengyuan and wang linjia offered their thanks. >> due to the loss of their daughters, they're unable to share with us today, so they had their friend to express

this gratitude with us. >> organizers of the memorial say they wanted to show the families just how many people in the bay area truly care about them. now, more information is emerging about the third teenager killed in the crash. the san mateo county coroner confirms that liu yipeng was 15 years old. chinese news outlets say all three teens came from the same school in china. the associated press reports she was still in her seat when rescuers arrived on scene. now, sfo is going to hold a blood drive tomorrow to help replenish the blood supply used for the crash victims. the event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the baggage claim area of terminal 3. walk-ins are welcome, based on availability. happening now, there is a strike at oakland international airport. a group of nonunion fast-food workers are picketing inside and outside the airport. they say they will be joined by union groups.

the one-day strike is to raise attention about what they call unfair labor practices by fast- food subcontractors. they say workers have been fired up for speaking up. we have not yet received a response from the food vendors. san francisco giants' pitcher tim lincecum took the hill and threw an absolute gem! >> high in the air and catchable. it's a no-hitter for tim lincecum! >> the 29-year-old pitched a no- hitter against the padres in san diego. it's the first of his career and the 15th no-hitter in team history. lincecum was brilliant, striking out 13, while tossing a career-high 148 pitches. lincecum credits his teammates, from pablo sandoval to hunter pence, to keep that no-hitter intact. >> i was pretty much speechless, because like i said, i don't know where to be

it's a calm and cloudy start over the oakland estuary, waking up in the 50's and an afternoon with mostly sunny skies, mild conditions. and we continue to follow developing news in the aftermath of the protests over the acquittal of george zimmerman. downtown oakland, you can see the doors have been smashed, just part of a lot of damage we're seeing in downtown oakland. several businesses were vandalized. demonstrators also spray- painted graffiti on walls. now, protests began shortly after a florida jury acquitted george zimmerman of killing 17- year-old trayvon martin. this morning, zimmerman is spending his first full day as a free man. reporter miller is live for us in sanford, florida, where it's

been relatively calm despite fears of violence. >> reporter: that's right. after george zimmerman was released his ankle monitor was immediately removed. where he'll go next is unknown. the jury has spoken. >> state of florida versus george zimmerman. verdict, we, the jury, find george zimmerman not guilty. >> reporter: not guilty of second-degree murder and not guilty of manslaughter for the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin. zimmerman admitted he shot the teen but he claims he was acting in self-defense. >> you have no further business with the court. >> reporter: after the trial ended, both sides offered their thoughts on the verdict. >> obviously we are ecstatic with the results. george zimmerman was never guilty of anything except protecting himself in self- defense. >> i am disappointed, as we are, with the verdict, but we

coming from supporters of edward snowden. a friend warns that if something happens to snowden, it would turn into america's worst nightmare. friends say snowden gave people thousands of documents that could cause more harm to the u.s. in a single minute than any person ever has. the documents detail how the u.s. allegedly intercepted communications. one of the firefighters killed in the wildfire was remembered in his hometown of southern california. on the far right of this picture is 30-year-old chris mckenzie. yesterday, an estimated 2,000 people gathered at the amphitheater in riverside county to honor his life and sacrifice. 18 other firefighters were killed on june 13 fighting a wildfire just north of phoenix. friends say mckenzie had an infectious smile and loved the outdoors. friends of a 22-year-old road rage victim are hoping a

growing reward will help find the people responsible for his death. on june 12, nakano was killed after a fender bender turned into a deadly confrontation. friends are trying to raise more award money for his case. >> i know the odds are against us, however with the help of the public, i am honestly we will catch these monsters. >> the reward in this case now stands at $35,000. fans of the fox series "glee" are mourning the death of one of the show's stars. ♪ ♪ i know it's late ♪ i know you're weary ♪ >> yesterday, cory monteith was found death in his vancouver hotel by hotel staff. he had gone out with friends

look through the downtown area, smashed storefronts. what you're looking at here is the sears store on telegraph. as we pan down here, you can see a number of the windows were broken out last night during this demonstration. but this morning, oakland police are telling us there was actually no one arrested. >> trayvon! trayvon! >> reporter: protesters called for justice for trayvon last night. some set fire to a dumpster in the middle of the street. it was around 10:00 when well over 100 people gathered outside city hall, then began to march through downtown, following the acquittal of george zimmerman in the shooting death of trayvon martin, the unarmed 17-year- old. police officers were called in to disperse the crowd. a number of the protesters wore masks as they broke store windows and spray-painted buildings. some of the graffiti called for violence against zimmerman. other graffiti called for

violence against police officers. the neighborhood watch volunteer claimed he shot the unarmed teen in self-defense. but even some of the protesters upset about the acquittal were disappointed about the vandalism. >> it doesn't make sense to do this to our community. these people had nothing to do with what happened. they're destroying our own community. just don't do it. >> reporter: now, some business owners, we watched them last night as they stood behind their security gates during the unrest, urging people to remain calm and hoping that their businesses wouldn't be damaged. vandals, in addition, targeted the superior courthouse at oak and 12th streets. they spray-painted the building there and smashed at least one window. the oakland police gave us an update this morning. they said there were no injuries. and, again, no arrests were made. but obviously a lot of cleanup for store owners here in the downtown here. live this morning in oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. throughout mornings on 2, we will show you demonstrations throughout the nation. in chicago, people expressed

their outrage. some demonstrators say they have lost faith in the system. many residents in florida felt a connection to the trial that was held in sanford, florida. people gathered on the steps of the florida capitol building in tallahassee. they were high school and college students about the age of trayvon martin. uniformed officers were on hand to keep the peace. a student group said it may be forced into civil disobedience. trayvon martin's family can still file a civil suit against george zimmerman. it is still unclear if that will happen. zimmerman's attorneys said they were ecstatic that george zimmerman is out of jail. a jury found george zimmerman not guilty of all charges in the shooting death of 17-year- old trayvon martin. >> as happy as i am for george zimmerman, i'm thrilled that

this jury kept this tragedy from becoming a travesty. >> now, we respect the jury's verdict. but really, what it boiled down to is a kid minding his own business, being followed by a stranger. that's not a theory. that's the facts. >> prosecutors say for them, the case came down to which person was heard yelling for help on a neighbor's 911 call. they believe it was clear that martin was the victim. but the victim's mother also testified that it was her son calling for help. some were visible upset and in tears when they heard the verdict. shortly after the verdict was read, martin's mother, sybrina fulton, tweeted, lord, during my darkest hour, i lean on you. you are all i have. a landmark build in the north bay has been destroyed by a fire. it started last night. the company sold animal and pet feed along with other supplies

to backyard farms. it is said to be the oldest business in the city. according to the santa rosa press, the fire started in haystacks stored right next to the building. no injuries have been reported. we have learned that robbery may not have been the motive for a deadly attack at the julie mart in san francisco. officers say barry white of antioch walked into the store with a gun and a knife, killed two sales women, then seriously wounded the store's owner. the victims have been identified as 35-year-old ken min of san francisco and lean that lin of daly city. police say white had visited the store at least once before. san francisco police are investigating a crash between a muni train and a van that left 19 people hurt. it happened about 1:00 yesterday afternoon on third street. a muni spokesperson said a white van made a left turn in

front of the train as it was slowing down to stop. one woman was on the train with her baby when that happened. >> i had to cover my baby. i had to hurry up and cover her so the glass wasn't hit her. >> none of the injuries are life-threatening. police say the driver of the white van has been cooperative. the crash shut down muni's line for a couple of hours, but service has been restored. take a look at this in san francisco's pacific heights neighborhood. a van slammed into several parked cars on california and baker streets, causing a domino effect there. police say it appeared the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel and run through a red light. a sonoma county supervisor is out on bail, accused of trying to break into a woman's home. 32-year-old efren carrillo was arrested. a woman called police, saying someone was trying to enter her bedroom window. police say carrillo was wearing

only underwear, socks and holding a cell phone. the woman said she knew him only by seeing him around the neighborhood. a rally is being held. in november, the interior department refused to issue a permit that would allow a company to continue farming. the rally will be tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 at the waterfront restaurant and cafe in san francisco. bart labor negotiations are expected to continue tomorrow. workers are threatening to strike again if a deal is not reached by the time their contract extension expires next month. the nearly week-long strike cost the bay area's economy $7 million a day in lost productivity. and if you need to fill up your car, you might want to do it soon. the break in gas prices is about to be over. analysts say gas prices are expected to go up about 15 cents a gallon. >> the

>> in the next couple of weeks. the average price in california is about $4 a gallon. here in the bay area, it's a little bit more in san francisco, where it's about $4.11. in oakland, it's $3.96 finishes eventually, there will be 70 bike stations with more than 700 bikes. membership will cost you anywhere from $88 for an annual pass to $9 for a 24-hour pass. it's 7:38. a nice day to hop on a bike. very pretty outside. a little cooler but maybe just a light jacket and you'll be good to go. >> yes. we are waking up this morning with low clouds, a little bit more widespread, back across the bay. oakland waking up with overcast

following protests about the acquittal of george zimmerman. we're also seeing spray painting and graffiti. a bart police car was one of the cars damaged last night. more protests are planned in the bay area today. more show times have been added to accommodate the large crowds in oakland that have been lining up to see the new movie about oscar grant. it opened friday in seven theaters, brought in more than $127,000 on opening night. several screenings sold out. the movie is a drama. it opens nationwide on july 26. tomorrow, a vigil will be held for john caldwell.

caldwell was with grant at the bart station when grant was shot and killed in 2009. the vigil will be held tomorrow afternoon at the 76 gas station where caldwell was killed. despite pressure to ease criminal overcrowding, the governor says there are no plans to build new prisons. governor brown has said limited resources are better spent on education and rehabilitation. meanwhile, the hunger strike continues at more than 20 california prisons. since yesterday, more than 6300 inmates still refuse to eat. the strike ask a statement against inmates being held in solitary confinement.

congress is debating whether to cut $80 from the nutritional program. some mothers say they will have to buy less food for their children. a bay area politician says there should be saturday voting whenever an election draws near. leland lee is backing a bill that would give voters a chance to vote on a saturday before an election. his bill would require counties nationwide to open a polling place on at least one saturday before election day. yee is hoping to improve low turnout for local elections. the senator is running for secretary of state next year. immigrants could soon be ranked in order to decide who is able to settle in the u.s. the idea is being considered in the u.s. senate right now. the immigration bill has a ranking system that takes into

account how well prospective immigrants speak english and how well they're educated. the scale would also factor in work experience. the ranking system would begin 2018, in the bill. texas legislation bans most abortion of 20 weeks of pregnancy. this was a second attempt by supporters to pass a bill in the senate. it originally failed to gain approval because of a marathon filibuster by senator wendy davis. >> there's a lot of rule- breaking going on in the capitol right now. unfortunately, we'll just see another day. >> texas governor rick perry said he will sign the bill into law. the state's insurance commissioner says california's new health care exchange system could open people up to fraud. the program starts in october as part of the federal

government's affordable care act. enrollment counselors will have access to people's personal and financial information. but the state's insurance commission says there is no plan for investigating fraud complaints. a spokesman says the exchange has made consumer safety a top priority. a new program in the east bay is providing high-risk youth with an hiv prevention spill, being funded by the aids research program. it will give youth access to the drug along with safe sex counseling. travada is currently manufactured in foster city. as part of the free admission program, the museum says it's part of an ongoing effort to support edge gaition in the bay area. teachers can get free vouchers.

meanwhile, napa county is going to be receiving nearly $1 million. the goal is to save energy, create jobs and improve school conditions. the funding became available after prop 39 passed last november. charter schools within napa valley unified school districts were awarded funds. if total, the proposition allotted $450 to california public school districts. visitors to this year's state fair say they are noticing more police officers than normal. yesterday, more than 100 officers were patrolling the grounds at cal expo. workers say on a busy day, the fair can attract about 50,000 people or more. the countdown begins as the royal baby could be here anytime now. with each day that goes by, more and more reporters have stationed themselves outside that hospital. yesterday, prince william attended a charity, despite it being kate middleton's official due date. when the child is born, a piece

coverage continues. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it is sunday, july 14. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. let's head right over to rosemary for a check on your forecast. >> good morning to you. subtle changes in store for your day as we head out there morning. the low clouds are back, piled up along the coastline and inside the bay. areas like oakland, hayward, waking up mostly cloudy, where we were mostly sunny yesterday morning. the subtle change in the afternoon will come in the way of just a mild cool-down, but it's the start of a trend. i'll have a layout of the numbers for you, coming up. and we begin with the developing news this morning. the aftermath of protests across the country, following the acquittal of george zimmerman. >> we, the jury, find george zimmerman not guilty. so say we all, foreperson. >> zimmerman shook hands with his attorneys after the jury cleared him of all charges in connection with the shooting death of florida teenager trayvon martin. the six-woman jury deliberated

for about 15 hours before acquitting him of both second- degree murder and manslaughter charges. the verdict immediately sparked protests nationwide, including here in the bay area. in oakland, some demonstrators turned both violent and destructive. ktvu's alex savidge is live for us in oakland this morning where some store owners have a mess to clean up this morning. alex? >> reporter: yes. quite a bit of damage here in the downtown area. outrage over the zimmerman verdict last night led to heated protests here in oakland. and this is a common sight, as you go throughout the downtown area this morning. smashed-up storefronts, businesses that have been vandalized. what you're looking at here is the store front of the sears store on telegraph, where you can see quite a few windows were broken out last night as demonstrators moved through this area. surprisingly enough, though, oakland police say this morning no one was arrested during this demonstration. >> trayvon! trayvon!

>> reporter: there were the chapters from the crowd. they called for justice for trayvon martin, the unarmed black teenager who was shot and killed. some sent fire to a dumpster in the middle of the street here me oakland last night. everything got started about 10:00, when well over 100 people began to gather outside of city hall. then the crowd began to march through downtown oakland, following the acquittal of george zimmerman in the shooting death of trayvon martin. police officers were called in to try and disperse the crowd. they came from a number of different agencies. many protesters wore masks as they broke store windows, vandalized a bank and spray- painted buildings. some of the graffiti called for violence against zimmerman. the neighborhood watch volunteer claimed he shot the unarmed teen in self-defense. protesters we talked to are frustrated by the acquittal. >> it does not surprise me. it would have been nice if he

would have got convicted of something. i look at it like this. god is going to punish him no matter what. that's karma on him. that's something he's gonna have to answer to. >> reporter: vandals also focused on the superior courthouse at oak and 12th streets. they spray-painted that building and smashed at least one window. this is a common sight around downtown oakland this morning. quite a bit of cleanup to do. a lot of smashed-up windows. we are seeing some people getting the boards out to board up those windows today. oakland police gave us an update this morning. again, no arrests were made, and they say no one was hurt during last night's demonstration. live this morning in oakland, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. now, across the bay in san francisco, another demonstration is planned for this afternoon. >> justice for trayvon martin! >> last night, protesters marched down valencia street.

>> that's why we're here, to say that trayvon martin deserves justice, not this travesty that happened in florida. >> san francisco police have patrol cars and vans following demonstrators. officers say the protest was peaceful. >> what do we want? justice! >> the message was the same in los angeles. as a precaution, the lapd issued an citywide tactical alert that extended the shifts of police officers. the demonstration did stay peaceful. protesters say the trayvon martin killing is not a matter of black and white but rather an issue of right and wrong. new this morning, police are looking for the person who shot and killed a teenager in east san jose. it happened on mercer drive around 1:00 this morning. officers responded to a party and found a 17-year-old boy inside a car with a single

gunshot wound. he was transported to the hospital where police say he later died. anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call police. a vallejo woman is facing child endangerment charges after police say she abandoned her one-year-old son in a gas station bathroom. police released this still photo from a surveillance video. they say the video shows the woman pushing a stroller into the bathroom, staying there for nine minutes, and then walking away. 22-year-old joia hulkill was arrested after someone recognized her from that still photo. police say the child was left alone for about an hour but was not hurt. happening now, there is a strike going on at oakland international airport. a group of nonunion fast-food workers are picketing inside and outside the airport. a one-day strike is to raise attention about what they call unfair labor practices by fast- food subcontractors. they say some workers have been

fired for actually speaking out. we have not received a response from the food vendors. now to our continuing coverage of the asiana flight 214 crash. the families of two teenagers killed in that crash say they're touched by the outpouring of support. more than 100 people attended a memorial yesterday in burlingame. while a buddhist foundation organized the event, other religious leaders took part as a show of solidarity. the parents of 16-year-old ye mengyuan and the father of 16- year-old wang linjia surprised everyone by joining that ceremony and then, through a friend and a translator, offered their thanks. >> due to the loss of their daughters, they are unable to share with us today, so they had their friend to express this gratitude with us. >> organizers of the memorial say they wanted to show the

families just how many people in the bay area truly care about them. more information is emerging about the third teenager killed in the crash. the san mateo county coroner confirms liu yipeng was 15 years old. chinese news outlets say all three teens came from the same school in china. while the first two victims were found outside of the plane, the associated press reports she was still in her seat when rescuers arrived on scene. sfo is going to host a blood drive tomorrow to help replenish the blood supply that was used for the crash victims. that will be at the baggage claim area of terminal 3. appointments are strongly recommended but walk-ins are welcome. tim lincecum took the hill and threw an absolute gem! >> high in the air and catchable! it's a no-hitter for tim lincecum! >> the 29-year-old pitched a no- hitter against the padres down in san diego. it is the first of his career

and the 15th no-hitter in team history. lincecum, absolutely brilliant, striking out 13, while tossing a career-high 148 pitches. lincecum credits his teammates, from pablo sandoval to hunter pence, who made a diving catch, to keep that no-hitter intact. >> i was pretty much speechless. i don't know where to be in my head, kind of the way things have been going. but i just want to thank them for the way they've played, the big offensive output that we've had. >> that's right. the giants' offense had another big night. lincecum now has two world series rings, two cy youngs, and a no-hitter. ace pitcher a.j. griffin was also in fine form last night. the first-place a's won 3-0. the a's keep their one-game lead in the division.

in 1994. he turns 95 on thursday. fans of the show "glee" are mourning the death of one of its stars. ♪ ♪ i know it's late ♪ i know you're weary ♪ >> yesterday, cory monteith was found dead in his vancouver hotel. police say the actor had gone out with friends the night before, but surveillance video shows him returning to his room alone. one of the firefighters killed in the arizona wildfire was remembered at a memorial service yesterday, an estimated 2,000 people gathered in riverside county to honor his life and sacrifice. 18 other firefighters were killed on june 30 fighting the wildfire just north of phoenix.

friends say mckenzie had an infectious smile and loved the outdoors. in chicago, a 12-year-old boy is being called a hero for helping to save his family and neighbors from a fire. edwin looked out his kitchen window and saw that his back porch was on fire. he woke up his family and then went outside to tell his neighbors to get out of their homes. the seventh grader alerted more than 50 people about the fire, which quickly thread to four homes. >> people wake up, there's a fire here! and they all came out. >> this young man should be commended. to get people out of the structure, out of his own building, and then neighbors. that's an amazing young man. >> the boy says he knew what to do because of the fire safety tips he learned at school. firefighters do not know the cause of that fire and no one was hurt. a judge will soon decide whether the owners of the world trade center can try to get billions of dollars more in

well, for the first time, sailing fans got a chance to watch two of the america's cup teams compete on the san francisco bay. the team from new zealand took on the italian team. the two huge catamarans hit the starting line near the golden gate yacht club, then made their way through course at speeds well above 40 miles an hour. fans said they were happy to be a part of it all. >> we have an opportunity to be standing on land, being able to witness this. it's never happened before at the america's cup. i'm taking every opportunity to take in as much racing as we can. it is truly exciting! >> new zealand won that race by a wide margin. the next scheduled race is today. the next televised race is set for july 21. let's check with rosemary

george zimmerman is a free man this morning. good morning and welcome to mornings on 2. it is sunday, july 14. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. there was violence following the zimmerman verdict. some of the worst of it right here in the bay area. some protesters yelled profanities, even shoved and hit a ktvu news crew. >> cut it out! cut it out! >> our news photographer was following the march in oakland when she was attacked. she says someone on a bicycle bumped into her and pushed away the camera. she suffered bruises and a black eye but is otherwise okay thanks to security, who stepped in. as demonstrators marched through downtown oakland, the

rally for justice then turned violent. protesters set small fires to dumpsters. windows at several stores were smashed. businesses, including a sears store and the downtown offices of the oakland tribune, were damaged also. >> justice for trayvon martin! >> across the bay area, in san francisco, protesters marched down valencia street. organizers said they had been prepared in case of an acquittal. they made hundreds of picket signs declares that zimmerman was guilty. another demonstration is set for this afternoon. throughout mornings on 2, we are showing you some of the demonstrations across the nation following the decision. in chicago, people filtered through the streets to express their outrage. some demonstrators say they've lost faith in the justice system and have planned another rally to start in just 90 minutes. many residents of florida felt a connection to the trial that was held in sanford, florida. hundreds of people gathered on

the steps of the florida capitol building in tallahassee. uniformed officers were there on hand to keep the peace. a student group known for nonviolence said it may be forced into civil disobedience. under florida's wrongful death act, trayvon martin's family can still file a civil suit against george zimmerman. it is still unclear if that is going to happen. after the verdict, zimmerman's attorneys said they were ecstatic. a jury of six women deliberated for about 15 hours over two days. they found george zimmerman not guilty on all charges in connection with the shooting death of trayvon martin. >> as happy as i am for george zimmerman, i'm thrilled that this jury kept this tragedy from becoming a travesty. >> now, we respect the jury's verdict. but really, what it boiled down to is a kid minding his own business, being followed by a

the incident shut down most of the interstate but 580 reopened just about three hours later. no arrests have been made. a landmark building in the north bay has been destroyed by fire. it started last night. now, the company sold animal and pet feed along with other supplies to backyard farmers. they are said to be the oldest business in that city. that fire started in some haystacks stored next to the building. no injuries have been reported. we've learned that robbery may not have been the motive for a deadly attack inside a store in the jewelry mart in san francisco. officers say barry white of antioch walked into the store with a gun and knife, killed two salespeople and seriously wounded the store's owner. police say white had visited the store at least once before.

the exact motive is still under investigation. san francisco police are investigating a crash between a muni train and a van that left 19 people hurt. it happened about 1:00 yesterday afternoon on third and evans. a muni spokesman said a white van made a left turn, right in front of the train as it was slowing down to stop. one woman was on the muni with her baby when that crash happened. >> i had to cover my baby, so i had to hurry up and get up and cover her up so the glass wouldn't hit her. >> none of the injuries are life-threatening. police say the driver of the white van has been cooperating. the crash shut down muni's t line for a few hours but service has since been restored. take a look at the damage caused in the pacific heights neighborhood. a van used for the city's homeless outreach program slammed into several parked cars on california and baker streets yesterday morning. police say it appears the driver may have fallen asleep

at the wheel. a sonoma county supervisor is out on bail, accused of trying to break into a woman's home in santa rosa. 32-year-olds efren carrillo was arrested. a woman said someone was trying to break into her bedroom window. when investigators got there, carrillo was wearing underwear and socks only. in november, the interior department refused to issue a permit that would have allowed the continuation of farming by the oyster company. a rally is going to be held at 2:30 tomorrow at the waterfront restaurant in san francisco. prices of gas are expected to go up in the next couple of weeks. the reason? some experts say unrest in egypt has cost the price of crude oil to rise. here in the bay area, here's what it looks like to fill up.

charities are now still awaiting payments and three lawsuits have been filed against the event and its organizers. well, there may be new hope for baseball fans who hope to keep the a's in oakland. the port of oakland is settling a suit with a terminal operator. some people in oakland want to turn the 50-acre property known as the howard terminal into a new waterfront ballpark for the a's. developers say the project would also include housing, shops and restaurants. but the a's say the waterfront ballpark may be too expensive and are still looking at a possible move to san jose. a push to ease overcrowding at state prisons. why not everyone is quite on board. plus, we'll take a look at the first weekend in theaters. just how many people from the bay area have already turned out. and a live look outside. traffic looks pretty good right now but could get a little

growing reward will help find the people responsible for his death. on june 12, aya nakano was shot and killed during a minor fender bender turned into a deadly confrontation. last night, nakano's friends hosted a benefit. they are trying to raise more reward money for his case. >> i know it's tough. the odds are against us. however, with the help of the public, you know, i am hopeful that, you know, we will eventually get there. we will catch these monsters. >> so far, the reward in this case has raised $35,000. last night's fund-raiser raised at least $6,000. more show times have been added to accommodate the large crowds in oakland that have been lining up to see the new movie about oscar grant. the station opened on friday in seven theaters across the country. it brought in more than $127,000 on opening night.

several screenings sold out. the movie is a dramatization of grant's last 24 hours before he was shot and killed by a bart police officer on new year's day in 2009. tomorrow, a vigil will be held for john caldwell, one of officer grant's best friends. caldwell was shot and killed two years ago. police are still searching for whoever killed the father of two. caldwell was with grant at the bart station when grant was shot and killed in 2009. the vigil will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 at the 76 gas station on tennyson road where caldwell was killed. despite pressure to ease prison overcrowding, governor brown says there are no plans to build new prisons. governor brown has said limited resources are better spent on education and rehabilitation. meanwhile, the hunger

strike continues at more than 20 california prisons. the strike is a statement against inmates being held in solitary confinement at pelican bay state prison. seven inmates have required medical intervention as a result of the strike. smaller and fewer meals for their children. that is what some mothers are saying in the u.s. this weekend. congress is debating whether to cut $80 billion from the nutrition program. the federal government says the food stamps serve approximately one in seven americans, so mothers who work low-wage jobs say if the cuts are made, they will have to buy less food for their children. house leaders expect to vote on the food stamps in the next week or two. a bay area politician said there should be saturday voting whenever an election draws near. yee is hoping to improve low

voter turnout for local elections. the senator says he's running for secretary of state next year. who is able to settle in the u.s.? an idea is being considered by the u.s. senate right now. the immigration bill has a ranking system that takes into account how well prospective immigrants speak english and how well they're educated. it is a 100-point scale. under the bill, the ranking system would begin in 2018. a state insurance commissioner says california's new health care exchange system could open people up to fraud. the program starts in october as part of the affordable care act. they say workers will have access to people's personal financial information. they say they have made consumer safety a top priority.

a initiative is being funded by the california hiv research program that will give youth access to sexual health services. studies have shown truvada reduces hiv. president obama will host former president george h. w. bush and his wife barbara in the points of life volunteer project. tomorrow's event honors the winner of the 5,000 daily point of life award. everyone awaits the arrival of the royal baby. every day that goes by brings more and more reporters to the hospital where that birth is expected to take place. yesterday, prince william attended a charity polo match. today, he plans on attending

bart labor negotiations are expected to continue tomorrow. the workers are threatening to strike again if a deal is not reached by the time their contract extension expires next month. the nearly week-long strike two weeks ago cost the bay area's economy an estimated $70 million a day in lost productivity. more wedding licenses are being issued now that gay couples can legally get married. in contra costa, back on monday, june 3, the county clerk's office gave out 33 licenses. then on monday, july 1, several days after the supreme court's ruling, the county issued 64 licenses. so far this month, there have been 260 marriage licenses approved in the county. the prop 8 ruling is cited as a big reason. visitors to this year's california state fair say they're noticing more police officers than normal.

yesterday, more than 100 police officers were patrolling the grounds in sacramento. cal expo has also added more surveillance cameras. workers say on a busy day, the fair can attract about 50,000 people or more. the exploratorium in san francisco has announced it's going to offer free admission to thousands of public school teachers. it is part of the free admission program. the museum says it's part of an ongoing effort to support education in the bay area. teachers are get their free vouchers by visiting the exploratorium's website. meanwhile, napa county is going to get nearly $1 million in state funds to retrofit its schools. that funding became available after prop 39 passed last november. charter schools were awarded separately. coming up on the 9:00 hour,

coming up. there is new search at the hour for missing oakland toddler. she was the subject of an amber alert last week. ktvu alex savage just arriving at the scene working on establishing a signal. i know we do have you by phone, what can you tell us is happening right now. >> reporter: we have a search that's underway here. it's one of the east bay original parks and right now we have search teams from alameda county. total of about 30 searchers. right now we're spanning out across the wooded area searching obviously for any signs of diaphany web, the missing 21 month old who went missing last wednesday. her father claims that she was kidnapped while he was inside of a liquor store. so there are searchers going through this area. they have search dogs. i'm also told by lieutenant on the scene that there are cadaver dogs as well that are in this area searching. i just talked to the lieutenant and got an update on what

exactly is taking place. i asked him what led him to this area. they have specific information that she's possibly in this area. this is one of the areas where she and her father would come for walks. and so this is just covering their basis in this investigation, covering their basis and trying to search any possible area where she may be. this search began at about 7:30 this morning it will continue at some time command post set up here and searcherrings are searching for any sign of this missing toddler who went missing last week in oakland. >> alex, we know you're working on establishing a shot out there we just pulled up. we appreciate the new information you've told us that she's possibly there in that location. as soon as you get that shot up we'll check back in with you for an update live in oakland on the search for diaphany web. >> and also developing this morning the aftermath of protests over the acquittal of george zimmerman.

>> we, the jury, find george zimmerman not guilty so say we all foreperson. >> well, zimmerman shook hands with his attorneys as you can see right there after the jury cleared with all charges in connection with the shooting death of florida teenager trayvon martin. the jury was made up of 6 women they deliberated for 16 hours before acquitting him. the verdict immediately sparked protests nationwide, including here in the bay area. and some of the words of violence during those protests happened in oakland. there you see just some of it, demonstrators madged through the downtown area and rally for justice turned unruly. they vandalized the bus stop. they set fire to dumpsters, windows and several stores were also smashed. businesses included a sears store and downtown office of oakland tribune. >> it's not the people that really have true emotion behind

it, so, it's people that just want to rage out against anything and everything and using this as an excuse to be destructive. >> now, police told us they did not make any arrests merchants say they're angry that no one was taken into custody. across bay another demonstration is planned for this afternoon. >> last night protesters marched down the street in the city's mission district they had been prepared in case of an acquittal. they made hundreds of pickets that say the justice discriminates against minorities. >> that's why we're here to say that trayvon martin dereceivers justice -- deserves justice. >> they had patrol cars and vans following demonstrators, officers say the rally was peaceful. set forth at 4:00 this afternoon at the intersection of market and powell. >> and we want justice.

governor brown has said limited resources are spent on education and rehabilitation. meanwhile the hunger strike continues in more than 20 california prisons since yesterday more than 63 inmates still refuse to eat. the strike is statement against inmates being held in solitary confinement at the prison. los angeles times report 7 inmates have required medical intervention as as a result of the strike. there to's no word of the condition of those inmates. a politician said there should be saturday voting whenever an election draws near. he's backing a bill that would give voter chance to vote on a saturday before the election. he's hoping to improve low turn outs for local elections. the senator says he's going to run for secretary of state next year. the state's insurance commissioners california new health care exchange system could open people up to fraud. covered california program starts in october as part of the federal government

trails and wooded areas there. there -- they're from alameda county they're using both search dogs. this is all part of the investigation into the disappearance of 21 month old diaphany web. her father told oakland police that she was abducted from his car while he went inside a store earlier this week. now, i was talking with the lieutenant here on scene he told me the reason they are focused on this park today or part of the reason because diaphany and her father would typically go take walks on some of the trails and he talked about why the search was focused here today. >> reporter: you know, we're trying to support and continue looking as many spots as we. and so, you know, we're going to continue putting that forward and trying to get as much we can as anyone who might see or know something. >> reporter: at the same time a teen right now is also -- team
