they are sending a team to investigate. moving along and taking a look at the bay privilege bridge an early morning fire damaged six apartments. paul chambers has been live at the scene. you spoke to someone who was evacuated. >> yes i spoke to a battalion chief. this was a three alarm fire and had about 55 firefighters out here. not as many right now. it started in the corner apartment right there on the second floor and it quickly spread allove and be-- above and below. if you take a look at video here. one resident told us he heard an ear piercing sound which he thought was from batteries and dying in his fire alarm. however, he later found out it was a fire alarm system for the entire building. fire officials say they were

told the fire started on the second floor. as i said it quickly spread above and below that spot. by that time people from several units left their apartment and headed to safety. >> other people were seeing the same thick. everybody's apartment. the fire alarms in our building went off at the same time. so we were just down there for 20 minutes until we realized that there was actually a fire. >> what we have is some fire that got into a mechanical chaseway. running between the first and third floor. at this point we have six units potentially involved. and some form of smoke or water damage. >> reporter: fire officials say this was an accidental fire. it started in a clothes drier and might have been ignited when lint caught on fire. six units were damaged. however, no one was injured. basically back out here live firefighters are cleaning up. doing the final touches right here. we will stay on top of this and bring you the very latest.

once again they are basically in their trucks cleaning up around here. i think it's pretty much over. those six units people living in those units have been helped by the red cross. live in san mateo i'm paul chambers ktvu channel 2 news. >> protestors took to the streets of oakland to denounce a verdict. once again they ended in violence and vandalism. alex savidge is getting a look at the damage this morning. alex. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of smashed up store fronts everywhere you look here. this is just one example. this is the front window smashed up here at the oakland disstore. this is a locally owned clothing store. obviously hit breath hard. last night it was a heated demonstration. of course sparked by that not guilty verdict for george zimmerman.

now last night our cameras followed a couple hundred protestors as they moved through this area. obviously quite a bit of damage was done to store fronts. there was one person we saw who was taken into custody. this morning a police officer with oakland. i have if you do it this morning a lot after -- two straight nights of protests. we'll go to break here. we'll be back shortly.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. across the bay in san francisco demonstrations against the george zimmerman verdict were peaceful. >> hundreds of people took to the streets in downtown yesterday as you can imagine they carried signs with trayvon martin's picture and marched down powell street to union scare. san francisco police operations say no arrests were made. the march was organized by the group answer san francisco. in the meantime the legal battle may be over. the other charges that could still be filed against george zimmerman. go to ktvu.com for more video of the protests. just look for the zimmerman verdict section at the top of

our page. victims of the sfo plane crash will likely receive different amounts of compensation. sources say american passengers were serious injuries can expect to receive multimillion settlements in u.s. courts. but victims from other countries may have to -- result in smaller damages being awarded. 64 americans were on flight 214. the other 227 passengers are from china, south korea, canada, india, japan, vietnam, and france. 31 survivors of the plane crash at sfo have been reunited with their families in china. 26 students and five teachers from a chinese middle school returned home yesterday. three students from that school were killed in the crash.

a blood drive will be held today to help replenish the blood used in the crash. that center has been set up to help the victims of the huge apartment fire eight days ago. there one person was killed 20 others were injured including several firefighters. the fire also forced some 100 people from their homes. investigators are still trying to determine how the fire started. san francisco state university has expelled a fraternity following the county of a pledge. peter tran died. university officials decided to expel the fraternity from the campussen that is according to the examiner which also reports that an investigation continues into whether students who were at the party will be punished.

the university has also hired a nonprofit to raise awareness for student drinking. right now it's 6:09d. i want to check in with sal. >> i want to start with 80. 80 westbound looks good. but the university avenue overcrossing is closed. university avenue closed from berkeley west to sixth street. this is a hit and run. it's a fatal crash now. police will be doing their investigation. traffic on 80 westbound is getting by. westbound bay bridge that is backed up for a 20 minute delay. 20-25 minutes be no problems reported by chp.

weekend. this morning the commerce department reports retail sales increased in june. sales were soft in home improvement and department stores. so the final number was about half of what many analysts expected. but car sales were up 1.8%. which is the biggest gain since last november. retailers not making a big push for back to school shopping season. most stores say they are -- usually they increase ordered to about 10%. that could mean stores run short of items. >> back to school already. >> i don't want to think about it. i'm enjoying summer. coming up fans of the royal family anxiously awaiting the new baby's arrival. pam included. how the palace plans on spreading the good news. >> bay area hopefuls preparing for american idol season 13. what advice organizers are getting. of course you can wake up with ktvu every morning.

channel 2 morning news. it's 6:23. happening right now transit officials are warning drivers in southern california that today's commute could be a nightmare after that tanker fire shut down part of the busy freeway interchange. the interstate five interchange with state route 2 in downtown los angeles has been closed since saturday. after a truck carrying 8500 gallons of gas overturned. the freeway may not open until tomorrow and that means 150,000 drivers who normally take that route will have to find another way to get to work. zoo keepers at sacramento zoo are grieving the loss of a beloved snow leopard. 20-year-old san tee was one of the oldest in captivity. she had be put down after suffering severe traumatic injuries to her back. the wound indicates aggression to shawntee and the young male that has been living with her.

over crossing the interstate 80. just after 5:00 this morning police say a man was hit and killed by a driver who fled the scene. they are still looking for that driver. but the berkeley police public information officer told us that indeed someone was killed in this crash. the city's fatal accident investigation team has arrived and it will be closing off part of university avenue overcrossing there to do that investigation. again we have no more information we don't know what kind of car they are looking for. but we do know that this is a good area to avoid. you might want to think about using ashby avenue as an alternative. so far you can see 80 -- at 6:31 let's go back to the desk. sal, thank you. meantime the acquittal of george zimmerman in florida is leading to more violence and vandalism here in oakland. alex savidge is getting a look at the damage this morning.

he joins us live. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of business ordinary reasons here in the downtown area have a lot of cleanup to do. quite a bit of damage everywhere you look. this is one store front that was smashed up here last night or over the weekend during two straight nights of demonstrations. all of it people upset about the acquittal of george zimmerman in the shooting death of trayvon martin. our cameras are there late last night and early in the morning as a group of protestors moved throughout downtown spray painting buildings. we watched as one person was taken into custody by officers but police told me this morning there was no information on the arrest or why it took place. protestors did block several intersections at various points. forcing drivers to turn around. and at one point our photographer who was shooting the crowd felt threatened by

the crowd and went behind a security at one local business. that is when about 400 or so people got together at frank ogawa plaza to express their outrage with zimmerman's acquittal. >> we're all americans. we're all human. and we should all be angry. >> it was a tray city. zimmerman should have been guilty. >> reporter: at one point there was airgraph of demonstrators urging people to remain calm and not to commit in the acts of vandalism. i spoke to the police about how much damage was done. right now there is until estimate on the cost. as you drive throughout the down tear area you see -- downtown area you see a lot of store fronts that look like

fire marshal to give us an exact cause. they believe it was lint inside a drier that sparked this fire. live in san mateo i'm paul chambers ktvu channel 2 news. meantime investigators are trying to determine the cause of a weekend fire. it started friday night. that is the company that has been selling animal and pet feed to farmers for the past 80 years. the exact cause remains a mystery. no one was hurt. friends and family of caldwell will be holding a vigil in hayward. it will begin at 4:30 this afternoon add the gas station where he was killed. the 25-year-old was shot two years ago while sitting in a car. police are still looking for -- time is 6:48.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. numbers are dipping down after futures were positive all morning long. there is some decent economic news this morning and retail sales earn earning -- sales and earnings reports. analysts skeptical. numbers down. live look at the big board. dow is off about four points. autopsy is scheduled today for glee actor corey monteith. he was found dead inside a hotel room on saturday afternoon. he was from canada and visited the area often. in april monteith voluntarily checked himself into a treatment center admitting he had substance abuse issues. he was seen with friends the night before his death but came back to his room alone. san francisco international

airport is planning major improvements in the year ahead. they include building a new air traffic control tower, improving the baggage inspection systems. they plan to raise the money by saling more than $500 million worth of bonds. those bonds would be paid off by landing fees and money raised from airpost parking and concessions. good news for ferry commuters. two additional round trips have been added to the schedule. ferries are packed with summer tourists and loading up all of their bicycles were causing delays. the hope is it will keep ferries on time. the number of home foreclosures in napa is topping. a toe so that is -- the county government efforts to reduce
