>> reporter: we're live in berkeley where traffic is being diverted on a major roadway while police investigate a deadly accident. >> reporter: a lot of boarded up windows this morning in downtown oakland. the cleanup continuing of a two straight nights of angry demonstrations over the acquittal of george zimmerman. an early-morning fire on the peninsula forces several families out of their families. what we've learned from

"mornings on 2" starts now. good morning, everybody. it's monday, july 15th. i'm brian flores. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. dave clark is off today. let's get a quick look at weather and traffic. steve, cooler? >> much cooler. no doubt about it. along with a westerly breeze, a little drizzle. that means 50, 60s, coast and bay and mainly low 80s inland. sal? >> steve, we're looking at the commute that's already busy. it's a little better at the toll plaza. normally at this time, we look at this picture, you see a lot more traffic stretched out to the macarthur maze. this is a look at the macarthur maze. traffic here does look pretty good on 80 as you head west. there are no major problems as you drive out here.

let's go out to ktvu's janine de la vega. she's at the scene of a deadly hit-and-run crash. >> reporter: we're here at the university overpass. you can see it. right now, university avenue is closed at 6th street all the way to west frontage road because police are investigating this fatal hit- and-run accident. that's because the body of a man is here. investigators are trying to piece together what happened and to get more information. we just got here on scene and so did jennifer koates with the berkeley police department. can you tell us what happened? >> at 5:15 this morning, our officer was on patrol and discovered the victim. he immediately called for medical assistance. the berkeley fire department responded. he was pronounced dead on the scene. it looks like it's a hit-and-

run fatality. we had our fatal accident team respond as well as homicide detectives as and they are on scene. >> reporter: were there any witnesses or car debris? >> i don't know specific if there's debris. we're looking for witnesses to come forward if they've seen a collision, to -- to contact us. any details will be helpful in solving this case. >> reporter: can you tell us what's opened and closed? i heard an onramp is closed. >> we've opened up the eastbound lanes into berkeley. you can get off at university avenue and go east on university. you won't be able to access the freeway from university avenue. you can't drive and get on the freeway from university avenue. you'll have to use gilman and ashby at this point. >> reporter: are police officers directing people to detour? >> yes. we have officers posted at 6th street and west frontage to let people know the freeway is closed and to let them nope the

alternative -- let them know the alternative root. >> reporter: thank you. the investigation team will be here for the next couple of hours. make sure if you are trying to get on 80, avoid university avenue. reporting live from berkeley, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, janine. 7:03. turning to our other top story -- the acquittal of george zimmerman in florida led to more violence and vandalism in oakland. 2500 miles away. ktvu's alex savidge is getting a look at some of the damage and he joins us now from downtown oakland. good morning, alex. >> reporter: well, good morning to you. quite a bit of damage everywhere you look in downtown oakland this morning. we're outside of the sear's building on telegraph avenue where almost all of the windows are boarded up because any were broken during demonstrations. these protests sparked by the not guilty verdict that came down for george zimmerman in the shooting death of trayvon

martin. [chanting] >> reporter: our cameras were there and followed along with a group of protesters as they moved through downtown oakland late last night and early into the morning. spray painting buildings and at certain points clashing with police. we watched as one person was taken into custody by officers. police told me this morning, they didn't have any information on that arrest or any other arrests. the protester did block a number of intersections, forcing drivers to turn around. and one point things got so heated, our photographer felt threatened and had to go behind a security business. this followed a very peaceful demonstration that began earlier. that's when 400 people gathered at frank ogawa plaza to express their outage over the verdict. one bs owner said he sports the

demonstrations but does not support the haven'tallism. >> i sport the demonstrations but i wish it was peaceful. >> reporter: there was also at one point a group of demonstrations overnight, last night, i should say, who burned an american flag in the street at 14th and broadway. again, this was all part of two straight nights of protests over the zimmerman verdict. police told me this morning they didn't have any details on exactly how much damage was done but as we bring you back out here live to a picture, you are looking down telegraph at the outside of the sear's building. you can see boarded -- boarded up windows. a lot of cleanup for business owners to do in this area. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> and mayor quan issued a statement about the people who gathered saturday night.

it says "sadly, some of them dishonored the memory of trayvon by engaging in violent activities that hurt our growing economy and endangered people. this is unacceptable as well. we will not tolerate violence in our city." across the bay, the demonstrations were peaceful. >> hundreds of people took to the streets in downtown san francisco yesterday. they carried signs with trayvon martin's picture and marched down powell street to union square. san francisco police operations say no arrests were made. the march was organized by the group "answer san francisco." go to ktvu.com for more protests. victims of the sfo plane crash will likely receive different amounts of compensation depending upon what country they are from. experts say american passengers with serious injuries can

expect to receive multi-million dollar settlements in u.s. courts. but victims in other claims may have to pursue their claims in asia. 64 americans were aboard asiana flight 214. the other 227 passengers were from china, south korea, india, japan and france. 26 students and five teachers were a chinese middle school returned home yesterday. three students from that school were killed in the crash. they were helded to california to attend a summer camp. a blood drive will be held at sfo to help replenish the blood supply. if you want to help, it starts at 9:00 a.m. at the baggage claim in terminal 3 appointments are needed but walk-ins will be accepted based upon the need. any problems out there, sal? >> we do have traffic at the

a lot of low clouds, fog and our local drizzle. a combination along with a west wind means it will be cooler. there's a few breaks in there with the sunshine. but it will be cool. artemis racing team says it's working on getting back to the race. the team suffered a setback in may after an accident killed a team member and damaged their boat. they hope to be back on the water by the end of next week. five companies that formally manufactured lead paint are set to go on trial today in santa clara county. ten california cities and counties are suing, claiming the companies were aware of the dangers of lead paint. lead paint was used in homes up until 1978 and has been linked to serious health issues in children. the lawsuit asks that the companies be required to remove lead paint from about 5 million

affected homes, including ones in ail me alameda, san mateo and san francisco counti has invited all 100 senators to a meeting tonight as he contemplates changes to senate voting rules. reid is threatening to change the rules to let nominees win approval with a simple majority vote. reid accuses republicans. a jury found george zimmerman not guilty. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, the pressure is mounting against attorney general eric holder. kyla? >> reporter: brian, the naacp wants the attorney general to charge zimmerman with violating martin's civil rights. and more than 13,000 people have signed on to a petition on the white house website

demanding the same thing. holder and the justice department looked into charging zimmerman after the deadly shooting but they backed off. so florida prosecutors could go after criminal charges first. now, the justice department says it's reviewing zimmerman's difficult because they would have to establish zimmerman's state of mind. they would have to know for sure there was a specific intent to commit a crime against martin. now, president obama released a statement yesterday reading in part "i know this case has elisted strong passion. in the wake of the verdict, i know those passions may be running higher. but we are a nation of laws and a jury has spoken." when we expect to hear from the house and the attorney general's office when i see you next. back to you. george bush is returning to the white house for a ceremony honoring volunteers with president obama. the two presidents will

some bay area sigers are getting excited -- singers are getting excited as registration for "american idol" begins today at san francisco's at&t park. the actual auditions won't start until tomorrow. registration opened up about a half-hour ago and will remain open until 8:00 tomorrow morning. but organizers are warning hopefuls to register today as spaces quickly fill up. no overnight camping will be allowed inside or outside the ballpark. the countdown continues for the arrival of the royal baby as the duchess of cambridge is due at any time. yet, there are no reports that kate middleton has gone into labor. royal officials say once the baby is born, they will post a tweet, hang a sign at the palace and notify the media.

people are slowing approaching university avenue. earlier, the ramp was closed. they opened it up. but it did cause slow traffic. traffic is backed up from pin nome. when up get to the toll plaza, there's a backup of 20 minutes before you get on the upper deck of the bay bridge. if you are driving on 880 south, we've had slow traffic but it's improving. let's go to steve. a cloudy morning. had a mix of sun and clouds. most locations are saying sunny, mostly cloudy. unless you are far inland, it's sunny. a lot of low clouds and fog out there. and they've made a strong surge. san jose says cloudy. santa rosa says cloudy. even livermore says cloudy. pleasant hill, a mix of sun and clouds. high pressure will lose out hear for a couple of days. mainly 80s inland. up towards clearlake and mendocino, tough to break the 90s down in july.

university avenue to talk about the investigation and how it's affecting traffic. janine? >> reporter: sal, there's quite a bit of police activity here on university avenue. you can see a bunch of police officers and detectives. the westbound lanes here are closed on university avenue from 6th street to the west frontage road. so detectives can conduct their investigation. that's because a poddy of a man is lying up there on the overpass. berkeley police say just after 5:00 this morning, a patrol officer spotted a man down on the university avenue overcrossing. firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene but were unable to save the man. the department fatal accident investigation team was called in this morning because police believe this man was hit by a vehicle. >> we do have indications that it is a hit-and-run accident. so we're investigating that. and we had our fatal investigation team respond as

well as homicide detectives. they are on the scene. >> reporter: police canvassed the area looking for witnesses. they still need help and want anyone in the area at that time to call them if they have any information that may be helpful. now, the westbound onramp to 80 is closed at university avenue. traffic did is being diverted to gilman at this point. we also do not know the identity of the victim, who the man is, and why he was walking there on the overcrossing because there's no space for pedestrians to walk. there's no sidewalk there. it's a very dangerous place to be. all of these questions that investigators are trying to answer. reporting live from berkeley, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, janine. 7:31. new this morning, the red cross is helping people who live in half a dozen apartments in san mateo after an early-morning fire. the fire broke out around 1:00 this morning at a complex on

bridgepoint parkway. ktvu channel 2 reporter paul chambers has been live at the fire scene. paul, do we know what caused the fire? >> reporter: yeah, the possible link, a clothing dryer. that window on the second floor, that is where the fire started. one resident told us around 1:00 this morning, he told and ear-piercing sound which he thought was from the batteries dying in his fire alarm in his apartment. however, he later found out it was the fire alarm system for the entire building. fire officials say they were told the fire started on the second floor. once on scene, they saw it spread to the top and bottom floor also. by that time, people from several units left their apartments and headed for safety. >> a lot of people were seeing the same thing. everybody's apartment, the fire alarms in our building went off at the same time. we were just down there for 20

minutes unless we realized it was a fire, not a false alarm. >> we got into a mechanical chaseway lunning between the first and third floors. at this point, we have six units potentially involved, some form of smoke or water damage. fire officials say it appears this was an accidental fire which started, as i said, earlier in a clothes dryer. it might have been because of the lint in the dryer catching on fire. six units were damaged. that was most lit from water and -- mostly from water and luckily no one was injured in the fire. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. the eight quittal of george zimmerman in -- the acquittal of george zimmerman led to more violence in oakland. this was downtown oakland last night. vandals spray painted buildings and smashed store windows. the scene was much the same saturday night shortly after the verdict in the zimmerman

some 400 people. >> what do we want! >> justice! >> the verdict in the zimmerman case sparked protests all across california. this was the scene in downtown sacramento yesterday, where dozens of demonstrators gathered outside of the federal courthouse for a peaceful protest. in los angeles, police reportedly arrested several protesters. demonstrators marched down the streets and l.a. police in i yuts gear looked on. the mayor of los angeles called for peace on twitter after some people broke off from a peaceful march and threw rocks at officers. officers fired back with nonlethal beanbag rounds. family members of trayvon martin are calling for peace. >> my heart is heavy. i'm very proud of the trayvon martin movement. >> that was trayvon martin's cousin speaking. >> an attorney for martin's

parents described them as heartbroken. following the verdict, both posted messages on twitter, thanking people for their support. a sonoma county supervisor has admitted himself into rehab for being arrested on burglary. police say they found the man in his socks and underwear after a woman called saying he was trying to break into her home saturday morning. carrillo says he's seeking professional help. this was his second arrest in ten minutes. 18-year-old peter tran died at a party held at a fraternity house back in april. officials expelled the university from the campus.

the university has also fired a nonprofit to raise awareness about student drinking. 7:36. thousands of adult education students across the country are working to beat a deadline to earn their g.e.d.s. students who have not earned their high school equivalencecy diploma will have to start the process all over again. the current system has five tests but the new one has just four. they must be taken on the computer and many will require s.a.t. answers instead of multiple choice. the her cue you are news reports -- the news reports that the carpool fine is $400. but listed says the fine is $280 and other amounts.

the state is able to get away with it because the signs say "minimum fine." members of bay area bike share will be able to use bikes at several locations in san francisco and near caltrain stations in palo alto, mountain view, redwood city and san jose. an annual pass will cost $88. three-day pass is $22 and a one- day pass will cost $1. if biking is not an option for you, let's check in with sal. what's the bay bridge toll plaza look like? >> it's about normal. as you look at the toll plaza, you can see that there's a -- a lot of times we see cars over to the left of your screen. still about a 15, 20-minute delay, but it looks like we might have a break getting closer to 9:00. that's what we've seen in the past, anyway. looking at the toll plaza -- i'm sorry, the sunol grade, southbound 680 driving through the fremont area and heading down to san jose has looked pretty good. the nimitz freeway on the maps here, you can see traffic is

slowing according to the road sensors from 238 as you drive down to union city. san mateo and dumbarton bridge, those commutes look good. >> let's go to steve. >> a very good monday morning. a lot of fog around. cold and very foggy. very cold, very foggy. for some -- there's mist and drizzle in there. sometimes if high pressure builds in, there's a strong push well into the north bay. along the coast, it's this, thick, thick -- it's thick, thick, thick. it could go from much cooler to much hotter by the end of the week, today, tomorrow, inland temperatures will come back. can't get much cooler by the coast. 50s, and 60s there. there will be some areas that might be warmer, cooler.

but officially, 60 degrees. not very warm. a lot of low clouds out there. hard to see, but there's a little low spinning there. that's all it takes this time of year. now, again, it's not strong enough to maybe cool off areas up towards mendocino andlake county. but for most inland areas temperatures starting off in the low to mid-50s and you get a southwest of to 30 miles an hour, it has a flow master on it. just flying. that's really howling out there. i've seen about 25, 32 from port chicago to pittsburg. things are in place here for a rather robust fresh westerly breeze. even from sfo all the way out to hayward. san jose gets a little southeast. 48 up in tahoe, 51 in ukiah, which was 97. the higher clouds we had last week down in southern california are now long gone. so if you you don't have the fog, you get sun -- you get the sun. most of the mist or drizzle

tori? >> all right. thank you. well, the b.a.r.t. talks continue but are they closer to an agreement or a strike? ktvu's pam cook is in the newsroom with what's happening today. good morning, pam. >> good morning. it sounds like they are no closer to an agreement than they were last week. the clock is ticking. b.a.r.t. management and the unions will resume their contract talks sometime this afternoon. a union spokesperson tells us here at ktvu news, that the two sides are still far apart on sticking points, raises and contributions to healthcare and retirement. negotiators have until august 4th to come to an agreement or union workers are threatening to walk off the job again. now, we've been told that both sides have signed an agreement to observe what's called confidentiality of the mediation process. that means we're not getting very much information about the current proposals being discussed with negotiators but we are continuing to follow the story. we'll bring you any updates on

roads. that's so police can investigate this hit-and-run accident. a berkeley police officer was in the area and he spotted a man down on the university avenue overcrossing just after 5:00 this morning. emergency crews were called but paramedics were unable to save the man and he was pronounced dead. officers found debris from a car and determined the man died after being hit by a vehicle. officers canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses but were unable to find any. we're looking for witnesses to come forward. if anyone knows anything, they are asked to contact us. any detail is important and could help us provide a resolution for this case. >> reporter: police say there are no other signs of trauma, like a gunshot or stab wound, which also leads them to believe this was a hit-and-run accident. there's no sidewalk or pedestrians on the overpass where the man appeared to have been walking. at this point, his identity is

just at about 7:30. no one was injured. there's a bus bridge in place and the traffic -- or the train traffic may be affected by this. we also have breaking news in berkeley where traffic is being affected on university avenue near interstate 80 as police investigate a deadly hit and run. and janine de la vega joins us live from the scene with the discovery police made hours ago. janine? >> reporter: yell, sal. i want -- yes, sal. i want to talk about traffic first. the westbound lanes on university avenue are closed from 6th to frontage street. there's a bunch of berkeley police officers here and the fatal accident investigation team. the coroner just arrived here on the scene. that's because there is a body of a man man lying on the overpass. berkeley police after 5:00, a patrol officer spotted a man down on university avenue on the overcrossing. firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene but were unable to save the man.

dryer. you can see there is a restoration crew right there cleaning up the things that the firefighters had to throw from outside. it started on the second floor. the fire started around 1:00 this morning. that's around the same time one resident said he heard an ear- piercing sound which he thought was from the batteries dying from the fire alarm in his apartment. i took it off the ceiling. i realized it was one thing on the wall. i didn't know what it was. it turned out to be a fire alarm for the whole complex. now, fire officials say they were hold the fire started on the second floor, but once on scene, they saw it spread to the top and bottom floors. by that time, people had left their apartments and headed for safety. they say the fire appears to be accidental and it may have started from the clothes dryer, something from there catching

police found the body of a man hit by a car around 5:15 this morning. the accident investigation briefly shut down the ramps to i-80. the naacp wants the u.s. justice department to charge george zimmerman with violating trayvon martin 'civil rights. there are reports of justice department is looking into the possibility but eric holder had said it would be difficult. the acquittal of george zimmerman in florida led to more violence here. this was the scene. vandals spray painted buildings and smashed store windows for the second night in a row. alex savidge joins us live from the downtown oakland area with more on the damage. >> reporter: this is a common scene as you go through downtown oakland. protests obviously propted by the not guilty verdict for --

prompted by the not guilty verdict for george zimmerman. protesters last night moved throughout the downtown area. our cameras were following along. they were calling for justice for trayvon martin. at certain point, demonstrators were spray painting buildings. other times they were clashing with police. one person was taken into custody by officers. this morning oakland police wouldn't confirm exactly what that person was arrested for. at one point, our photographer also felt threatened by this crowd and had to go behind the security fence at one local business. there was a group of demonstrators who burned an american flag in the street at 14th and broadway. all of the unrest came after what began as a peaceful demonstration earlier in the night. that's when about 400 or so people got together at frank ogawa plaza, expressing their outage with zimmerman's acquittal. one business owner this morning told me he's frustrated by all of the stores that were
