in downtown oakland after two nights of violence prompted by the acquittal of george zimmerman. alex savidge is live with more. is the city bracing for more problems? >> reporter: there's rally planned for downtown. these are what things look like after two straight nights of demonstrations. things go grow out of control. the mayor said this kind of destruction behavior dishonors the memory of trayvon martin. this morning workers replaced large glass windows at the chase bank on broadway after protesters broke them during heated demonstrations this weekend. the oaklandish store was hit. disappointing and frustrating for this locally-owned clothing company. >> it's really upsetting. we all live here and are from here and we do everything we can to support this community. so when something like this happens, it hurts more than

anything. [chanting] >> reporter: outrage over the zimmerman verdict sent hundreds of people marching through the streets of oakland last night. it all began as a peaceful demonstration but later in the night, some protesters vand aldized businesses, blocked intersections and faced off with oakland police. in one case we saw a man being arrested. although police didn't tell us why. this was the second straight night of protests in oakland. on saturday night, shortly after the verdict came down, there was a demonstration that turned violent. today, mayor jean quan told us much of the vandalism was done before police could really get a handle on the crowd. >> it happened very, very quickly. what we will to do is move police officers from all over the city and bring them downtown. by then, most of the vandalism was done. we're all very weary of this. and up know, it doesn't honor his memory. >> reporter: a team of downtown oakland ambassadors headed out this morning to paint over

graffiti and clean up broken glass. now city leaders and business owners are hoping the next protest stays peaceful. >> i support the demonstration, no problem to demonstrate. but i wish it was peacefully. that's all i mean. and we would like to come back to our business with the normal things and nothing damaged. >> reporter: and there is another trayvon martin rally set to begin 6:00 tonight. organizers are urging people to meet at 14th and broadway where that demonstration will take place. as some of the workers here in this oaklandish store told me they plan to stay inside the store. during tonight's protests, to keep an eye on the place. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. barbara lee is also reacting to the violence and vandalism in oakland. our washington, d.c. bureau reporter caught up with her this morning and said the

rallies must remain peaceful. >> we have to remember dr. king's message of remaining peaceful. it's incumbent upon us in democracy to protest to exercise our first amendment rights and to cry for justice. >> in san francisco, demonstrations against the zimmerman verdict were peaceful. >> guilty! >> hundreds of people took to the streets in downtown yesterday. they carried signs with trayvon martin's picture and marched down powell street to union square. san francisco police say no arrests were made. the march was organized by the group "answer san francisco." george zimmerman may have been acquitted of second-degree murder charges but he still could face other charges. the justice department says it's still investigating trayvon martin's death to see if zimmerman violated the

teenager's civil rights. attorney general eric holder spoke about the case a couple of hours ago during his speech in washington, d.c. he said the justice department will continue to act in a manner that is consistent with the facts and the law and would work to alleviate tensions and community concerns. >> i believe that this tragedy provides yet another opportunity for our nation to speak honestly about the complicated and emotionally charged issues that this case has raised. >> trayvon martin's family may also be considering civil action. they could sue zimmerman in civil court for wrongful death. go to ktvu.com for more video of the protests. just look for the zimmerman verdict section at the top of the page. police in berkeley are asking for the public's help to solve a deadly hit-and-run accident this morning. investigators say they don't have much to go on this morning and hope a commuter may have seen something. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us from berkeley. what's happening right now at

the scene, janine? >> reporter: well, right now, police have cleared the scene. university avenue is actually back open after being closed for about five and a half hours. pedestrians are not supposed to be on the overpass. there's no sidewalk for them. this morning police say a man was walking here and got hit by a car. police say one of the officers on patrol spotted a man in the westbound lanes of the university avenue overpass at around 5:10 this morning. paramedics were called to the scene but were unable to save the man and he was pronounced dead. officers say he didn't appear to have any bullet or stab wounds but they did find what appeared to be debris from a car. that evidence leads them to believe that a man was hit by the car that left the scene. investigators say tracking down the driver will be challenging. >> obviously, we don't have a vehicle here at the scene. so we don't know at this point what type of vehicle was involved. you know, and the time of day, and also, you know, the area that we're in is in an industrial area. it's more businesses that are

not open during that hours. >> reporter: homicide detectives and the department's fatal accident investigation team roped off the roadway for several hours so they could investigate. they canvassed the neighborhood looking for witnesses but so far they haven't found any. later today, they will be going by nearby businesses to see if anyone has surveillance video footage that may help with the investigation. the man who died has not been identified by the core coroner -- coroner. and police are asking anyone with information to call them. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. oakland police continue to investigate the disappearance of a 20-month-old girl. volunteers searched the canyon hills looking for any sign of daphne webb. daphne's father reported her missing on wednesday saying he had been taken from his suv.

police briefly jailed him after the reported disappearance for child abandonment but prosecutors will not charge him. bills are set to go out today from the california department of forestry and fire protection. they are going to nearly 30,000 rural san joaquin residents. the annual fee of $130 is expected to bring in $85 million to help support fire prevention selveses provided by calfire. a three-alarm fire damaged an apartment complex in san mateo. it started at about 1:00 a.m. in the building on bridge parkway. investigators know the cause and say it would have been a simple thing to prevent. >> reporter: from the outside, you would never know this was the scene of a fire. around 1:00 a.m., firefighters had a nine a -- had a 9 call

of a fire -- had a 911 call of a fire. >> at first i thought it was my smoke alarm batteries going out. >> reporter: but he later found outs it was the alarm for the whole building. >> i went down to the bottom floor. everyone was saying the same thing, the alarms went off. >> we have a mechanical chaseway running between the first and third floors. at this point, we have six units potentially involved. >> reporter: investigators say the fire is believed to be accidental and started in the second-story unit. it appears the source may have been inside a clothes dryer. >> it could have been lint in the system that got hot or ignited. >> reporter: investigators say most of the damage done is because of water. but fire officials also had to tear through the roof of each

of the six units to battle the fire. it's unclear how long it will take to repair these apartments but until then, the red cross is helping those displayed families. paul chambers -- displayed families. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. experts with american prk -- experts say american passengers with serious injuries on that asiana flight can expect to receive multi- million dollar settlements in u.s. courts. but victims from other nations may have to pursue their claims in asia where lawsuits are rare and often result in smaller damages being awarded. 64 americans were aboard asiana flight 214. the other 227 passengers were from china, south korea, canada, india, japan, vietnam and france. 31 survivors of the pleant crash at sfo -- plane crash at sfo have been reunited with their families in china. 26 students and five children

back into the wild blue yonder. many of the air force's combat aircraft started flying today. forced federal budget cuts grounded the acrobatic jets in april. they were able to shift funds from less vital operations to get them back in the air. the thunderbirds have been a big draw at air shows across the country. hundreds of families are gathering right now for a job fair in concord that's just for vets. brian flores is live with why

today's event offers more than just a job resource. brian? >> reporter: hey, good afternoon, tori. we're organizers of the east bay job fair. as many as 600 veterans and their families will be here with resumes in hand in the hopes of landing a job. but organizers say it's much more than that. organizers say the need couldn't be any greater for the hopes of finding a job. even though the economy appears to be rebounding, especially those from returning from afghanistan and iraq are having a hard time finding jobs. veterans and their families can bring their resumes and attend workshops to learn more about social media, nutrition and get more individual attention for v.a. needs. >> what they are really looking for is to find an opportunity that reflects what they did in the military. soap they want an opportunity to use their military skills and apply it to something that's meaningful that has a purpose that's part of a unit and can give them a new

direction in life. >> reporter: now, the event is being held at the hilton off diamond boulevard here in concord. we spoke with several veterans who say they appreciate the many companies that have come out. they say veterans offer special skills that many employers would appreciate. they are looking for more than a job. they are looking for a career. one veteran who served two tours of duty in iraq and one in afghanistan. >> the economy is pretty tough. so everyone is looking to make a better life for themselves. so everyone is looking for that job that will give them some self-worth and, you know, help pay the bills. >> reporter: now, there's also child care sas well as counseling and health services being offered to veterans as well. just in case you are hearing this for the first time and you want to come on, the event goes on until 2:00 this afternoon. we are live here in concord, i'm brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. hundreds of teenagers in oakland now have jobs.

mayor jean quan's summer jobs program kicked off today. several corporations and businesses have donated and are offering jobs to 1300 kids this year. they will work for the next six weeks. >> we've got companies like revolution foods, kaiser, companies throughout the oakland area that are gonna take young people and give them that work experience. >> mayor quan says her goal next year is to get jobs for 2,000 teenagers. five companies that termerly manufactured lead paint are on trial today. ten california cities and counties are suing claiming the companies were aware of the dangers of lead paint. lead paint was used in homes p up until 1978 and has been linked to serious health ires in children. the -- issues in children. the lawsuit asks that companies be required to move lead paint

from some 5 million homes. president obama today honored former president george h.w. bush for his support of volunteer work. [ applause ] >> former president bush was introduced with a round of applause this morning at the white house. the president acknowledged the points of life organization. they also honored a retired couple from iowa whose nonprofit organization delivers free meals to hungry children in more than 15 countries, including the u.s. former president of south africa says nelson mandela could be discharged from the hospital soon. he has been hospitalized for more than five weeks due to a lung infection. reportedly he's connected to a respirator to help him breathe. there's been an outpouring of support for mandella, both in south africa and around the world. thursday is his 95th birthday.

membership sales start today for a new bike-sharing program. starting next month, members of bay area bike share will be able to use bikes at several locations, in san francisco and near caltrain stations in palo alto, mountain view, redwood city and san jose. an annual pass will cost $88. a three-day pass is $22 and a one-day pass will cost $9. it's a cooler day around the bay area. i'm sure you're not going to be surprised when i fell you well below average. giving you a live look at the gray skies above the bay bridge. burn joch has been slow. we're beginning to see sunshine in some cases. i think by the afternoon we're looking at mostly sunny skies away from the coast. so this system responsible for this cooldown has also thickened up the marine layer pushing it well inland.

it's grown to 2,000 feet. it's increased our onshore breeze with the delta breeze blowing quite strong and this cooling trend will continue as this system remains off the coastline. tuesday will be the coolest day and then we'll rebound as we get into wednesday. here's a look at the three-hour time lapse of those low clouds. you can see it started out very well inland, south bay, north bay, east bay, but now it's pulling back. we have mostly sunny skies over parts of napa around the american canyon, novato, mill valley beginning to clear out. as i shift south you can see the southern edge of the san francisco bay. mostly sunny from the airport down to the peninsula through palo alto, sunnyvale, san jose and on the east side of the oakland airport also reporting partly cloudy skies. it looks like fremont you are enjoying partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies. again, the onshore breeze, quite robust. fairfield, 29 miles an hour. so the cool, pacific air blowing all the way through the delta reaching into the central valley for the afternoon.
