they have to do it again. oakland business owners are picking up after another night of violence. >> if you refuse to move, you will be arrested. >> in addition to property damage, there was a brutal assault on a worker. we just got new information on that. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. storeowners in oakland are cleaning up after another night of violence and vandalism. at least nine people were

arrested after a march protesting the george zimmerman verdict. we have live team coverage. we begin with alex savidge who has new information on the brutal attack on a waiter. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: good afternoon. in addition to all of the damage done to the businesses, one person was seriously injured in the attack. he's a server here at flora restaurant on telegraph avenue. you can see the windows boarded up. this server was apparently attacked by a mass protesters last night who hit him in the face with a hammer. one of his coworkers told me this man was taken to the hospital and did have to have sphichs of the injured server was among a group of employees who were trying to keep the protesters from smashing more of the windows.

crews are replacing glass at a number of businesses after a third straight night of heated demonstrations after the george zimmerman not guilty verdict. at least one bank was also vandalized. now, this morning, the city of oakland is also getting a helping hand with all of the cleanup that has to be done from a group of day laborers. they kim in from hayward and came -- they came in from hayward and started to pick up trash left behind from demonstrations. they are working with city crews and volunteering their time. >> we're working with some of the poorest workers in the county and they are here volunteering their time to clean up. if we can do it, a lot of people can do it. i think by doing this, oakland doesn't have to be desperate or throw in the towel and get up. we can move forward and improve

the city. >> reporter: according to the coworker i talked with this morning, the injured server from this restaurant was released from the hospital last night. he will likely take some time before before coming back to work. a police report was filed in regards to this attack. police came out and took information. but the employee i spoke with this morning about the attack said in all likelihood it would be hard to track down the person who attacked the person with a hammer, given this person was wearing a mask. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. some are criticizing how oakland police have responded to the three straight nights of protests. ktvu's sal castanedo continues our coverage downtown with what business owners are saying. good afternoon, sal. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. i want to show you the front of this store here that suffered major damage on one of the nights of the protests. some say they want the police

to do more. some say the police have not been tough enough and point to the relatively small amount of arrests. but some say more force is the most response. >> when you respond to a big group of people with a lot of people, there's an equal protection in, when you respond like that, you get into more troubles and problems. i think it's a difficult job that o.p.d. has. >> reporter: this man owns the awaken calffy. he says he -- cafe. he says he doesn't want the police to infringe on people and antaggennize people. >> as a business we want to be communicated to on what's happening. if -- if there's less police available. if there's more things in oakland that immediate to be addressed, we would like to be

clued in. >> reporter: at the oakland store several windows were damaged. some say more police isn't the answer at all. >> we don't need more police. we need a society that feeds into education, that makes education a priority in this city. >> reporter: now, oakland police declined our request for an interview. it's interesting to note that last night, oakland police asked for assistance from other cities in the form of mutual aid because they say they needed the help. it's unclear if there is any plan for coverage. sal castanedo, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. for the first time we're hearing from one of the jurors who found george zimmerman not guilty. the juror known as b-37 did an interview with anderson cooper. she said the evidence in the

case convinced her that zimmerman felt his life was in danger when he shot trayvon martin. but she faults zimmerman for going too far in his desire to protect his neighborhood. >> i think he's guilty of not using good judgment. when he was in the car and he called 911, he shouldn't have gotten out of that car. >> she says some members of the jury wanted to find zimmerman guilty of something but she says after hours of deliberating and reading over the law, they decided there was nothing to support a different verdict. >> a protester attack on his reporter and photographer stunned witnesses in lightning. a reporter was conducting an interview around 10:00 last night when brian and his cameraman were tackled. this is video of the aftermath. the crew was treated for minor injuries. los angeles police are investigating the incident. in addition to oakland, the verdict in the george zimmerman

trial has sparked three nights of protests around the country. we've put links to raw video of some of the protests on our home page, ktvu.com. you can find them in the zimmerman verdict section. a planned protest could disrupt muni service this afternoon. today marks two years since 19- year-old kenneth harding junior died. police say harding apparently shot himself during an exchange of gunfire with officers after they tried to stop him for alleged fair evasion. but harding's family disputes the police account and says they are still awaiting details of the investigation. the family and our supporters say they will attempt to shut muni down this afternoon at 4:00. afterward a vigil will be held. a suspect is in custody following a long standoff in san francisco's mission district. the police say this was triggered by a dispute between roommates. one roommate is accused of shooting another multiple times with a pellet gun. it happened around 4:30 this morning inside a building near

bryant and 22nd street. s.w.a.t. officers surrounded the building after the victim himself called 911 and said he had been shot. he's checked to survive. police escorted several men out in handcuffs around 7:15 and say one of them turned out to be the suspect. officers recovered the pellet gun at the scene. the man suspected of killing two people at a san francisco jewelry store is expected to make his first court appearance in about 90900 -- in about 90 minutes. barry white faces several charges. police say last friday white attacked three employees at the jewelry store which is located inside the san francisco gift center and jewelry mart on brannen street. they say as he tried to escape, white shot at police officers before surrendering. the jurors are deliberating in the richmond high school gang case. the o men are accused of

participating in the rape of a 16-year-old girl after a homecoming dance. they both face life in prison if convicted. each defendant has their own jury. two other men have been convicted. two others are awaiting trial on lesser charges. the family of missing 21- month-old daphne viola webb will be hosting a news conference outside of the oakland police department on 7th street at 4:00 p.m. daphne's mother will be providing an update on the family's efforts in finding the toddler. the little girl was reported missing by her father last wednesday. >> reporter: nearly 100 cats are dead after a fire rips through a san jose home. you will hear from the woman rescued and you will also hear if the cats were even allowed to be here. another unusually cool day for july. steve paulson is up in eight minutes with news about when the pattern is expected to change. and children usually not

a dogs helped save a homeowner from a fire in san jose this morning. but more than 90 cats at that

home did not make it out alive. ktvu's janine de la vega has a report on the rescue and why there were so many cats. >> reporter: this cat is one of seven that made it out alive at this home in south san jose. the bodies of more than 90 cats lay in crates strewn on the front lawn and throughout the property. >> i'm just stunned. i mean, i'll have to deal with where i go from here, but right now, it's -- i'm just stunned at the fear and suffering of my animals. >> reporter: carol miller says her dog bunny woke her at 1:45 a.m. to alert her of the fire. the two ran to an enclosed patio. >> when they got to the rear of the house, they saw her on the ground in the fetal position with smoke and fire over her. >> reporter: it took firefighters an hour to knock down the flames. the fire ravaged the home gutting it. firefighters say it was a challenge trying to put out the

fire with so many animals inside. >> i've not witnessed this many animals at one residence. >> reporter: at this point, the cause of the fire is being investigated. >> this is my worst nightmare. >> reporter: miller runs a foster care out of her home. she denied to be a registered owner bur the city denied her request. the captain said they are looking at citing her. city animal services has offered to remove the cats but miller says she wants to do it herself. she plans to have the cats cremated and buried at a cemetery in san jose. janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. san jose is promoting a new dog app meant to reunite dogs and owners quickly. this is to launch the finding rover act developed by finding rover in berkeley using facial recognition technology. it works by comparing a photo of the lost dog with photos of

found dogs. you can also load the found dog photos onto a map and see where your rover might be our animals are part of our family. we don't want to lose our family members. finding rover, i got a demo of it yesterday, my dog was lost and quickly found. >> the app's founder and the director of sf animal care and control will be traveling around the country for 11 weeks to promote the finding rover app. it should be available for the iphone and the android sometime today. with b.a.r.t. workers threatening to go on strike again, there does not seem to be much movement in a contract negotiation. the union spokeswoman says the two sides spent 20 minutes at the negotiating table yesterday afternoon. she says b.a.r.t. negotiators showed up at 4:30 and the talks were over at ten minutes to 5:00. union has said if a deal is not reached by august 4th. they will walk out again.

morgan hill police have arrested a 20-year-old ymca child care worker after a 6- year-old girl reported she was molested. according to police, nicholas larimay violated several ymca policies that prevents staff from being alone with children. he had been working with the ymca for the past four years. police say they also came across evidence of another sexual assault victim and they are asking anyone who may know of other victims to contact them. a man is in the hospital after being struck by a police van in san francisco. it happened just before 11:00 last night at spear and howard street. police say the 40-year-old man appeared to be intoxicated. witnesses say he walked out in front of the vehicle before being hit. officials say the man suffered non-life-threatening injuries. the uc regents begin three days of meetings today. their first since announcing the nomination of homeland security secretary janet napolitano as uc president.

the regents are meeting today through thursday at the ucsf mission bay campus in texas. they are scheduled to take up the nomination on thursday. some people have criticized the choice saying she does not have any experience in university management. but supporters say napolitano's political connections will help the university seek government funding. a spacesuit malfunction forced an abrupt end to a spacewalk today. two astronauts were outside the international space station when italian spacewalker luca said he had water inside his helmet. his u.s. partner kepped him back inside -- heferped him back inside -- helped him back inside. the crew says lucas looked frazzled but he will be okay. the problem is being investigated. target and the salvation army are teaming up to send kids back to school in style. it's all part of the school

we get a pretty good westerly breeze. it's fresh, it's a sea breeze. goes all the way down to point conception. the fog is up here. all associated with a weak little low pressure system. bod that enhance the fog, lifted up like 3,000 feet. also gave us some of that drizzle this morning. i know it might have been tough on the care. but the coolest day of the week by far will be today and maybe tomorrow because high pressure is coming back. so enjoy today if you can. that little spin in the atmosphere is moving north out of the area because another system drops in here. as it drops in there that will allow the high pressure back. a lot of tropical down in the desert. san jose, livermore, walnut creek, concord still in the 60s even with some sun. downtown oakland is 67. santa rosa, 59. a lot of 50s you still get gusts to 25, 35 miles an hour. concord west a 12. santa rosa, novato, take your

pick. almost everybody exweapt for santa clara valley. hayward -- except for santa clara valley. hayward. it's much, much warmer in tahoe and reno, 75, 76. 101 in palm springs. not even 70 in sacramento which is unbelievable. ukiah, 68 degrees. this isle coolest day. there will be some -- is the coolest day. there will be some fog. today a lot of 60s. 70s. way below average for this time of year. so you would expect we'll start to bounce off of these soon. some low 80s in areas that should be closer about 91, 29 and i mean it's a cool, cool day for many near the day. a lot of 60s, 70s and even san jose only 71 degrees. 60s, 50s, peninsula, very, very low 70s but after today, everything starts -- well, tomorrow will be nice. then the warm weather kicks in. 90s and it sure looks warm to

hot maybe by the time we get to the weekend. >> people are saying they enjoy this weather. >> the majority. i know there's some who like the warm weather. but the masses have spoken. >> thank you. jason kidd is now on probation after pleading guilty this personning to driving under the influence. kidd was arrested last year after crashing his cadillac suv into a utility pole in new york. in exchange for the guilty plea to misdemeanor dui, he agreed to speak to high school students about the dangers of drunk and driving. he's also expected to be suspended by the nba for two games next season. tonight is baseball's all- star game but one oakland as player is already a big winner. >> oh, ! he rips it back, back, back, back! gone! >> cepedes is bringing home the trophy for the derby.

on an ikea kitchen. a string of lackluster reports from companies like coca-cola and charles schwab pushing stocks lower. the dow is currently down 47. the nasdaq is down 14. s&p down 8. the fcc says more and more telemarketers are ignoring the national do not call registry. that's because it's become easier and chepper than ever to make robo calls. the fcc says complaints are up 54% from the year before. a crowd of about 1500 people with dreams of becoming the next "american idol" had a very special visitor this morning at at&t park.
