we'll go to him after this pitch who talked to jim leyland about how he needs to use mariano in this game and what was his answer, ken? >> ken: he said he might need to use him in the eighth rather than the ninth if the american league lead wasn't big enough. the reason for that is this. if fear, if you blow the lead in the eighth with another reliever, then you might not see reliever in the ninth because there night not be a bottom of the ninth. we're likely to see him in the eighth given that the score is 2-0. >> joe: typically, he would be the anchor of the bull pen. the seniority, the success. joe nathan is there as well. this is the night that will not come and go without this new york crowd being able to salute the greatest to ever do his job,

>> joe: same with a bunch of bats. first at-bat for carlos gomez here tonight. 13th and final all-star appearance for mariano rivera. that on the outside corner. a ball and a strike. it was a day in detroit where he was throwing to his bull pen catcher mike borzello when that cutter seemed to appear out of nowhere. it threw borzello into a panic. mel stotlemeyer came to the bull pen and they tried to straight it it out because it was moving too much. they couldn't do it. and rivera will ride to the hall of fame on that cutter. a foul back to the screen by gomez to keep this alive. such precision.
