say the staff member has been placed on administrative leave. >> reporter: three straight days of protests over the george zimmerman verdict have oakland trying to regroup. business owners asked for and received a meeting with the police chief to talk about the police response. there is also new video of some of the violence. ktvu's rob roth is in oakland with more on this. rob? >> reporter: you can see all the effects from this. here is one example. this is a bank in downtown oakland with the wipedoes covered -- windows covered in plywood. the police chief spent an hour talking with downtown business owners about their concerns and what to do about them. >> reporter: this video shows what happened in downtown oakland. vandals smashing the window. the downtown business community asked to meet with the police chief to discuss what has been

robbery suspects. the crash happened at 9:30. an officer spotted a car that matched the description of one used in a robbery. when the officer tried to pull the car over the driver took off. officers arrested the two people and also recovered the money stolen in the robbery. san jose police shot and killed a dog that attacked an officer this morning. the incident happened at a home on third street. as they spoke to the truck owner and attempted to interview another suspect a dog attacked one of the officers. >> the officer retreated back with the dog latched on and was able to go ahead and remove his fire arm and fire at the dog. >> a second officer also fired a thet dog. the owner was -- fired at the dog. the owner was upset and said

there are signs warning about the dog. crime is down in san jose but a report shows the most violent crime is rising. police say homicides are up 33% this year compared to last. despite highly visible foot parole that got 200 guns off the streets this year. and the number of less violent crimes is down. the police department says it is making an effort to crack down on gang activity. >> we got gang suppression details going out. those officers are incurring over time. is it sustainable? no it is not. but right now is when it is needed. >> police plan to dedicate 14 officers to gang suppression next month and keep them on duty till the end of jumar. decision today by board of regents. elected their first muslim student representative. ktvu's david stevenson is live
