the hospital. their grandmother was also shot and expected to survive. those in the neighborhood are shaken by the violence that seems to go on without end. she worries about her grandchildren. >> i can't let them come here. it is not safe. i don't know what is going on. it is just not. >> reporter: a vigil is expected to begin in a half hour in this neighborhood put on by save our little children. reporting live, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. >> and speaking of the vigil some leaders are hoping to turn this into action. ktvu's eric rasmussen is live in oakland where that vigil is about to get started not far from where she was killed. eric? >> reporter: that mobile police van just pulled up here. possibly in anticipation of a lot of people coming out for

the vigil. organizers hoping as many as 500 will come out to pray for alaysha carradine and her family but today we also heard from another group who said something more has to be done about the killing in oakland. >> child killed, a community outraged. >> this is a state of emergency when you are grandmothers being shot, 8-year-old girls being murdered. >> reporter: but these pastors say talking about it isn't enough. today they met with the police chief. >> we demand protection for our community. >> if we have to march up and down the streets talking to everybody, going door to do to say enough is enough, that is what we will do. >> if i see something i am calling the police. >> reporter: she lost two sons to violence in oakland. >> reporter: to you feel like -- >> reporter: do you feel like

we will have the latest on the such for the gunman. new information on the violent protests we have been covering. police today released new photos of people taking part in the demonstrations. this photo shows a man in a green shirt and red hat standing in front of a broken window. this is blurry. you can see a close up of a man's face. anyone with information on these two is asked to contact police. city counsel is set to take up a proposal that will ban protesters from carrying weapons. if it is approved it would prohibit clubs, wrenches and fireworks. they proposed a similar ban last year but it never went to a vote. a call for a weapons ban calls after a waiter was attacked after a protest with a hammer. he is disappointed an important

message was lost in the violence. >> sometimes people look at oakland and they see the violence instead of seeing people with a real message and a voice that needs to be heard. >> he was impressed by the reaction from the community after the attack. a lot of people came to his restaurant to show their support. today two juries convicted two men in the gang rape case of a 16-year-old richmond high school student. marcelles peter and hunter -- and jose montano were convicted of all three charges. a police officer who worked with the victim was happy to hear the verdict. >> i mean, nothing ever makes what happened goes away. >> they will be sentenced to up to life in prison on august 15.

two other men pleaded guilty and two other are awaiting trial. the board of regents approved homeland security secretary janet napolitano as the first female president of the system. nancy pelosi is expected expect -- janet napolitano is expected to begin in september. she was the choice out of 300 people considered for the job. this came among protest and arrests. ktvu's jade hernandez was there and joins us live from the city. >> reporter: we watched this all first hand. 20 people signed up to speak their mind. frustrations ignited and two men rushed members. >> reporter: they listened to the anger and frustration over the hiring of homeland security

secretary janet napolitano today. >> my family is at stake. my sister is in the process. >> reporter: he said illegal immigrant will live in fear. >> this is an offense. you take us seriously. >> reporter: later this same man ran towards board members. an officer tackled him. another man tried to rush them too. officers arrested both men. officers arrested each of them. outside a few hours before. at least 60 protesters chanted about her deportation record. the president elect has her supporters. >> she has extraordinary back ground and experience.

medical school. san jose state university is suspending online courses. a spokeswoman said it is putting on hold 5 courses so they can retool the syllabus. the 5 courses that are on hold is statistics, college algebra, math, introduction to programming and introduction to psychology. no word on when they will resume. improving economy in california could be bad news for those without jobs. california's unemployment rate fell to 8.5% in june. to qualify for benefit extensions from the government the rate must average 9% or higher over three months. the issue of cell phone thefts was a top concern today in san francisco where the district attorney met with

apple and samsung. ktvu's david stevenson is live with why new technology could spawn different type of crime. david? >> reporter: that's right. even as they showed off new security features some say it may not be enough to stop cell phone thefts. >> i keep it close to my body. tighter grip. >> reporter: it is not always enough according to police who say 50% or more of the robberies involve cell phones. >> it is an absolute enterprise, if you will, the market of the phones. >> reporter: the district attorney says makers bear some of the blame. he called in a task force to try out new security software. and making stolen phones worthless. it included software that could

truckers got back to work after a one day closure. trucks waited to drop off or pick up loads this morning. the union closed yesterday after one of their members died on the job tuesday. she suffered a seizure and crashed her truck. it is standard procedure to stop work anytime someone dies on the job. law makers are considering a pilot program for california license plates. 160,000 cars would test digital license plates. the plates would have wireless capabilities. it will save money and make registration more efficient but verdicts warn it makes motorists vulnerable. president obama was promoting the affordable care
