after a girl was killed. alishia opened the door, as she responded, someone opened fire. amber lee has the story. >> reporter: police tell us they're looking for surveillance video. the stepmother of the girl killed tells me the family will never be the same. >> ♪ >> reporter: these mothers share a bond. many have lost children to gun violence. tonight they came to pay their respects to 8-year-old alishia caradene and her family. >> stop the senseless violence, stop these mothers from having to bury their babies. >> reporter: alishia was at her friend's home for a sleep over.

but at 11:30 last night, they opened fire through the screen door. holding red paper hearts alishia made her grandmother. karen smith asked us not to show her face. she lives next door to where alishia was staying. >> i feel horrible. like we let her down. >> reporter: oscar grant's mother also came to show support. >> this is a baby. she doesn't have an opportunity to get married, she doesn't have an opportunity to have children. >> reporter: more than 30 police officers uniformed and plain clothes canvassed the neighborhood. we asked if a 32-year-old man who was inside was the intended target. police would not either confirm

or reply. only ktvu's eric rasmussen was there when a group of local pastors finished a meeting this afternoon with top city officials. >> reporter: the killing of a little girl touched a nerve in the city. >> that could have been any of our children, we are outraged. >> reporter: but these pastors from 18 african american churches say talking about it isn't enough. today they met with the oakland police chief and the mayor. >> we demand protection for our community right now. if we have to march up and down the street, knocking on doors to say enough is enough, that's what we're going to do. >> reporter: today chief jordan joined them. >> they're saying it's an emergency, it's out of control. do you see it that way? >> if an 8-year-old girl is getting shot in an apartment, i would say that's an emergency. >> reporter: part of the solution is having more african american police officers with

medical center. the chase started when police were trying to remove a car. police are investigating a shooting. a witness said officers were chasing the suspect when they managed to corner him in his car. officers then got out and started approaching the vehicle. the witness says the driver appeared to reach for something when the offers opened fire to kill the man. he has not been identified yesterday. a trooper upset with the roller stone cover. sean murphy says he was incensed so he has now published his own photos in boston magazine.

in san francisco. california's unemployment rate has been below 9% for three consecutive months now. that's a threshold for a tier four federal extension. it's the lowest extension for benefits but starts next month it goes away. 4,500 californians would have been eligible. the california uc regents has made it official and confirmed janet napolitano. jana katsuyama live at uc berkeley tonight and tells us napolitano's selection was met with loud protest that escalated to student arrests. >> reporter: the protest happened over at uc mission bay in san francisco. but let me tell you napolitano's job is not going

to be easy heading up the 10uc campuses and even this first day of president-elect was marked by controversy. protesters shouted at the uc regents meeting today. prompting dozens of campus police to move in. many were undocumented students concerned about napolitano's job six students were arrested and removed from the room. napolitano later addressed their concerns. >> when the students raise issues i will listen and i will learn. >> reporter: napolitano will become the 20th president of the system and the first female. the latest in the lifetime of firsts for the new york native.

great job. >> reporter: napolitano plans to meet tomorrow with mark yudoff to discuss the school's future. new details, napolitano is expected to be paid a salary of $570,000. they offered $20,000 more which is what the current president makes but napolitano opted to take the pay cut. she is also said to take a one time stipend of $590,000. the university announced the suspension of five online courses today. this comes six months after they debuted. the university says it needs to reevaluate the courses and is

oakland police are releasing more pictures of some of the violent protesters this last weekend in the hopes that someone will recognize them. one picture shows a man with a white baseball cap trying to smash a window. a second is a blurry shot of someone's face. both pictures were taken saturday night after the zimmerman verdict came down.

and tonight at 10:30, the renewedded effort to ban the very tools some of those protesters used. and why that is just as controversial as the protests themselves. two young men were found guilty in a 2009 gang rape of a 16-year-old girl in richmond high school. as john sasaki reports the two could be sentenced to spend the rest of their lives behind bars. >> reporter: 20-year-old peters and 20-year-old montano were led into the courtroom to hear the judge's decision. >> guilty of rape. >> reporter: the two were charged with the same charges. that last charge included a great body injury enhancement. >> there was one period of assault at which a great number of injuries were inflected on

prison. john sasaki, ktvu news. the city of detroit took on an unflattering title as the largest city to file for bankruptcy. that debt obligation has grown to $18 billion for what the city blames on decades of population decline, auto industry problems and government corruption. today the emergency manager assured the state's residents they will not be affected. >> services will remain open, paychecks will be made. bills will be paid, nothing changes from the standpoint of the ordinary citizens perspective. public employees -- employee unions are vowing to fight that move.

vallejo declared bankruptcy with $111 million in debt back in 2008 and has since recovered. stockton also filed for bankruptcy last year. and in 1994, orange county said it was $2 billion in debt and declared bankruptcy. some of the biggest names in silican valley are asking president obama to aoeu -- allow them to release to the public information on the government's surveillance request. one analyst says this request isn't as aughtistic as it sounds. >> reporter: this letter dated today was signed by more than 60 companies and nonprofit groups. including google, yahoo along with the aclu. they want the federal government to allow internet companies how many requests they received for customer data

killed last night believe he was the intended shooting two years ago that killed his brother. it happened just before 7:00 p.m. less than a week after the men who killed his brother were sentenced to life in prison. his brother charles c.j. davis was shot and killed in may 2009. prosecutors say gang members may have wanted to kill germane but instead retailuated against him by killing his brother -- retaliated against him by killing his brother charles. a wildfire in southern california is causing thousands of people to leave their homes. the so called mountain fire is burning in very steep terrain in mountain center. so far more than 22,000 acres have been burned since the fire first started on monday. at least seven structures have been damaged or destroyed and as many as 4,000 more are threatened. >> that's our house right there. so we kind of had to, you know

a belmont man is facing charges in connection with a hit-and-run i said dent on a busy street. police arrested jesse heapes at his house tonight. they say his car jumped the median and struck three vehicles. we have a photo here of the scene. one of the drivers suffered minor injuries. police arrested heapes on charges of hit-and-run and driving under the influence. the summer driving season means demand and consumption of gas is up. analysts say they expect summer prices to be the highest in five years. right now north american refineries are operating at close to peak capacity. meantime researchers at stanford and uc say the demand will peak then start to decline.
