dave clark has the day off. we have your traffic and weather. let's turn to steve. >> a lot of fog. we have inland temps that are not that bad right now. a lot of 50s with a westerly breeze. some locations will get into the 90s. we may top out today. here is sal. steve, good morning. if you are looking at the drive across the bridges this morning, it looks pretty good. san mateo bridge traffic is moving pretty well. there is a stalled vehicle. we are looking at the golden gate bridge. let's go back to the desk. investigators are still on the scene of a -- paul chambers joins us from outside the market where this happened on high street. paul. >> reporter: that is correct. he happened to be in the store when where it all happened. the body of the suspect is

still outside. and we said investigators are inside that store right now. now this store has had its share of problems in the past. this isn't the first time the story has been the scene of a robbery attempt. police were out here earlier this month. >> the store was robbed eight days ago with similar mo. and again it was an armed robbery at that time too. the same time of the evening. >> this latest incident happened just after 10:30 last night. two armed men wearing masks came inside the bonn fair market. according to police there were two employees inside. one in the stock room and the other at the resetter. the gunman attempted to rob the store. >> i believe he was in the store before the suspects came in. then they came in and attempted to rob the store. and that is when the

confrontation took place. >> reporter: police say the deputy fearing for his lifeshot and killed one suspect and possibly wounded the other. they do not believe the would be -- live in alameda i'm paul chambers. this morning the investigation continues into another deadly accident involved shooting. it happened on christine drive. he charged officers with several weapons in his hands. it came after police pulled over the suspect following a brief chase. >> and exited the driver's side. armed with objects in his hand which ended up being a hammer, a knife, and some other pry tools such as a nail puller.

and aggressively came in the direction of the officers. >> police say the incident began when a homeowner reported someone acting suspiciously in a south vacaville neighborhood. police found the suspect and tried to ask him some questions but he refused to answer them and drove away. this was vacaville's second -- investigators say the young man was suspected of stealing tv sets from a nearby walmart. new this morning police are searching for the driver involved in the hit and run in san francisco that injured a bicyclist. police say the victim was riding in the area of hide and ella streets at 3:45 this morning when a white four-door sedan hit the cyclist. the victim was taken to san francisco general hospital in serious condition. the suspect we understand got away. but police say the car involved may have front end damage. 6:04 is the time right now.

the ambulance company that serves santa clara county is operating in the red. the san jose mercury news reports that rural metro corp missed a crucial bond payment this week. the credit rating has been downgraded to junk status. that has county officials scrambling to make alternative arrangements. santa clara county threatened to end its contract with rural metro earlier this year with poor response times. scary story this morning. police are investigating an armed robbery at san jose state university. janine de la vega is there at the school and janine you are learning some things about what happened. >> reporter: yeah i just got offth phone with campus police. they are very concerned this happened. for an armed robbery to occur on campus it's very rare. the latest one happened right bethe male victim who was not a student was sitting on the lawn

using a laptop when he was approach bid three females. he was pistol whipped and caused lacerations to the back of his head an face. they stole the victim's lab top and ran in a south westerly direction through campus. officers did send out a message through i all -- two wearing red shirt -- now the female that was holding the gun was described as being 5'2" and she also had a lip piercing and holding a small brass revolver. they said it happened at dusk last night. they are still encouraging students if you are walking alone at night even at dusk, don't walk alone. walk with somebody you can

he later went to the hospital with minor injuries. he was wanted in connection to a domestic violence case. housing inspectors have red tagged that home because of the damage. the coast guard came to the rescue of two people that tried to take a night swim. the two left aquatic park to swim to alcatraz. they found the two swimmers near alcatraz a short time later. let's get to sal and check on that friday morning commute. >> traffic is doing well around the bay area. we hit a stalled vehicle on the upper deck. they did remove that rather quickly. there is a little bit of a backup. but it is lighter than usual. that is allowing the traffic to dispate on that bridge. also this morning we are looking at the commute on north

and southbound 880. the traffic is moving along very nicely. livermore valley had late running road work that is now gone. slow traffic mainly exists on the altamont pass before you get into livermore. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a very happy friday morning. nice tweets coming in. brad in pacifica 54. cool with high fog and west coast down in antioch 58. not fog too much inland. brentwood 6:00 a.m. it's 59. this does not have the strength it being this area of high pressure of the one we had a couple weeks ago. it will still be in the 90s to near 100. but most inland locations will be in the 90s. 70s for many around the bay.

60s on the coast. still come making a pretty good push. watsonville and parts of the coast down to monterey showing a little bit more in the way of fog. 50s on the temps. i'm not sure on that 48. 50s though. 55 concord. 55 san jose. there is still a component of a west breeze. 24 miles an hour out of the west. there is a delta breeze and temps in the 50s. now again they could fall apart. 80s on the desert. a lot of low clouds on the coast. high pressure has built in. this is system more of a typical pattern. no extreme or anything. you will get 90s. 60s and 70s coast and bay. again that would be far to the north and east. if we don't top out on the imland temps it will be tomorrow. oakland police still looking for the protestors that

that will make it a misdemeanor to carry certain items during protests. under the proposal protestors would be banned from carrying things like spray paint, clubs, and hammers. it comes after a waiter was attacked with a hammer. a similar ban was proposed during the occupy protest last year but it was later dropped. reaction to the new proposal is mixed. >> the only hammers that should be down here should be the ones boarding up the businesses. >> you take away the hammer they will pick up a chair. it's very aggressive. there is not much we can do. >> council members will debate the issue during their next meeting on july 30th. oakland police are releasing new pictures to find people who vandalized the downtown area. one photo shows a man in a green shirt. it looks like he's trying to smash the photo. a second is a blurry shot of a man's face. if you know the people in the pictures police want you to

call them. a man accused james whitey bulger of threatening his wife has turned up dead. autopsy showed no signs of trauma. friends don't believe it's a suicide. prosecutors once considered calling rakes to testify against bulger who spent 16 years on the run before law enforcement officials caught him and his girlfriend in 2011 in california. bulger is currently on trial facing racketeering charges. some members of congress are pushing new rules for measuring success across the country. as kyla campbell reports a new bill will replace key provisions of no child left behind. >> the house is poised to vote today on the student success act. it would strike several key parts of no child left behind. and also kill several obama administration education programs. several lawmakers are sided amendments to the student's success act yesterday. one would toss out a

requirement that states evaluate teachers based on student outcomes. those evaluations will become optional. bay area congresswoman barbara lee says the students success act will fail. >> i agree we must take a critical look at no child left behind and address its numerous shortcomings but the republican proposal is not the answer. this bill guts education. it violates the civil rights of students and does not support educators. >> concord congressman george miller called this letting the students down act. we'll be listening to what they have to say about this bill ahead of the vote when i see you next. live in washington kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. the national security agency is implementing new rules following the leaks by edward snowden. the agency has a so-called two- man rule now which requires any

system administer tour like snowden to only access key information with another administrator present. in addition the server rooms where data is stored are locked and require a two-person team to access them as well. more importantly the pentagon and intelligence agencies are considering similar programs. some of the biggest names in silicon valley are asking the federal government to release information on the government's data surveillance request. more than 60 companies and nonprofit groups such as google, facebook, and yahoo along with the aclu signed a letter saying the american people are entitled to know how many requests the company has received for customer data. one tech analyst says the real concern is overseas customers may stop buying their products because of government snooping. family and friends are remembering an eight-year-old boy who died in a baseball tractus. eight-year-old dillon williams was on first base when he was

hit in the head with a baseball tuesday and went into cardiac arrest. his family took him off life support yesterday. >> he loved baseball. so he was doing what he loved. he was outside all the time. >> sports. any sport you can imagine he loved doing it. >> the city is making plans to hold a memorial service for williams. counselors have been brought in to talk to the other members of the team. 49ers star linebacker brooks is off the hook. santa claire rap county prosecutors says brooks won't face any criminal charges for allegedly hitting a teammate on the head with a beer bottle last month. witnesses initially told police that brooks hit lamar divens with the bottle three times on june 8th. originally he said he wanted to press charges but then changed his mind a few days later. san francisco zoo is welcoming a new girl to its family. a new baby gorilla was born wednesday.

sal. the highs built back in. i think today and tomorrow the warmest day is inland. ukiah and clearlake near 100 degrees. vacaville near 98 degrees. san francisco oakland 60s and 70s. it's been tough to get out of the 60s here. going 65 today. it just seems to be stuck. it will still be nice. there is just too much fog out there. it's not going anywhere. there is no north or northeast wind or anything. there is more of a westerly breeze. r50s here for everybody. the forecast models are starting to back you have on the ridge of high pressure and some of the temperatures by sunday. so maybe this will be friday,

saturday for those well away from the coast. but by the coast there is areas of fog. and again with a westerly breeze few locations. 60s and 70s. berkeley 71. fair field 94. santa rosa 85. 95 livermore. 78 redwood city. 60s and 70s on the coast. we will still be warm to hot on saturday. but then it looks like gradual cooling for the inland areas. the lawsuit against the maker of vitamin water will go on forward. california, new york accused coca-cola of deceptive labeling. the labels claim vitamin water will reduce risk of eye disease. a judge ruled the lawsuit can continue but the plaintiffs cannot get any money no matter what the verdict is. this is interesting a new study shows former smokers earn more money than their coworkers. economic researchers found

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. 6:25 is the time. severe weather proved to be very dangerous in colorado after nine farm workers were struck by lightning. first responders say the workers were in the field when they were hit. several of them were knocked unconscious. two of the workers are listed in critical condition. now in rocky mountain national park a 65-year-old woman was also hit by lightning yesterday afternoon. a small submarine is exploring a section of the bottom of lake tahoe. the sub is called sur which

people celebrating taking the company public. when a company goes public it's an optimistic time. companies feel it's a good environment to take the company public. maybe good things for the markets. >> yeah for the most part a lot of green on the boards. good morning, everyone. welcome back to ktvu channel 2 morning news i'm mike mibach. dave clark has the day off. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. time now is 6:30. >> we are following breaking news. deadly officer involved shooting in alameda. it involved two armed gunmen an off duty sheriffs deputy. paul chambers is joining us from just outside that market located on high street. paul. >> reporter:th investigation is -- the investigation is now entering hour eight. this was the scene of the attempted robbery. here's what we do know. police say just after 10:30 last night alameda police say two armed men wearing masks or something covering their face came inside the bond fair market here on the 1500 block of high street.

according to police there were two employees inside. one in the stock room and the other at the register. they attempted to rob the store when they came in contact with an off duty alameda county sheriffs deputy who was already inside. >> the deputy ended up shooting and killing one of the suspects who was armed. and possibly shot the second suspect. >> >> reporter: investigators are look into area hospitals to see if anyone had been admitted for gunshot wounds. officers say according to witnesses statements they do not believe the robbers fired a single shot. this is is not the first time the store has been at the scene of a robbery. i will bring you that part coming up at mornings on 2. happening today we should find out the few hours of the official cause of death.

it's being reported they met with the victim's family yesterday to let them know the exact cause of death before the results are made public. as you mentioned there is a 10:00 a.m. press conference today. this morning here at the corn's office to re-- coroner's office to release those details. the question remains however how show dot there-- got there. was she ejected. and the big question was was she alive? according to the con cool this morning the paper sites two sources that says yes, she was alive before she was allegedly run over. the chronical also reports she may have been covered in at least a foot of the fire foam that is used to quickly douse fires.

helmet cam footage shows an apparent location of where she may have been seen. originally the coroner's office says her body showed signs of blunt force trauma as a result of being possibly run over and greg suhr agreed with coroner's assessment. in the meantime san francisco fire department officials said during a press conference on the 8th that they are cooperating with investigators and they have launched their own internal investigation on what happened. live in san mateo brian flores ktvu channel 2 news. the city's interim police chief calls violence against children an emergency where more than 30 uniformed and plain closed officers patrolled the streets.

$25,000 reward is being offer for information about that shooting. >> this family needs your lord. come by here. >> last night a group of mother's who lost children to gun violence held a vigil for alaysha. they gathered across the street where the shooting happened. one showed up to offer we are support was the mother of oscar grant. a massachusetts state trooper has been relieved of his duties after releasing new photos of the boston bombing suspect. officer shawn murphy released these photos after he was upset that rolling stone magazine put him on the cover making him look like a rock star. it shows the suspect bloody and surrendering to authorities. a red dot from a snipers rifle can be seen in the middle of his fore head. tomorrow marks one year after the deadly movie theater shooting. coming up how a couple that survived the shooting plans to

turn the tragic anniversary into a positive day. the bart labor talks picks up today. claudine wong is there. >> i wish show could be more hopeful than she is right now. we just talked to the president of atu1555 just in the last 15 minutes. i asked her on a scale of 1-10 one being a strike and ten being a deal she said she can't even get to five at this point. not great news but they go back to the investigation table today. both sides go back to the negotiation table at 11:00. they are still very far apart but in these type of things anything can change. they are trying to be optimistic that things will go better as you said we just have two weeks to go before we hit that august 4th deadline.

>> by the way we just looked at bart and bart is doing well according to dispatchers. we are also looking at the roads and traffic on the roads is doing pretty well. at the toll plaza we do have a little bit of a backup here. it's not all that bad. once you get on to the bridge it looks good. a little lighter than usual on this friday getting into the city. also the morning commute on interstate 880 that traffic moves along very nicely as you drive through. there are no major problems on 880 as you drive up to the downtown oakland area. also looking at contra costa county between concord and walnut creek a little bit of slow traffic on 680. i would say right now it's a good drive on 680 and on 24. let's go to steve. sunrise here. no fog at all. for others very foggy and dreary. inland temps will warm up. but again not as hot. lows in the 50s. a couple weeks ago we had lows in the mid 70s.

there is a big difference in that category. and there is a little bit of a westerly breeze. it's a fight between the last four or five days. high pressure builds in. that is what is happening right now. inland temps come up. it squashes the fog it doesn't just disappear. well, it does a little bit. 60s and 70s there. around the bay 70s or very, very low 80s. san francisco though seems to be stuck in those 60s if you will. today will be no exception. 65 starting off at 54 degrees. can't get past 55 or 66 lately. plenty of low clouds. some of this is reduced visibility. 52 in novato and santa rosa. 55 walnut creek. 54 half-moon bay. there is really in the a huge difference between out toward antioch and brentwood. fair field west at 17.

port chicago west at 23. a decent little delta breeze even though high pressure is building in. 59 yew coo yeah -- ukiah. this is already firing up back toward omaha. for us things are very, very quiet expect for that fog bank. the fog will be with us nights and mornings. it will burn off a little sooner. head back to the coast. 90nd to near 100 yes we will go ukiah to clearlake. just north off the plaza. novato 83. 98 for vacaville. 95 livermore. 73 oakland. 70 alameda. 82 san jose. 90s morgan hill. cupertino 85. santa clara 82. 80 menlo park woodside. san bruno 70.

daly city pacifica 62. we do have it looks like some of the forecast models start to cool inland temps down. in southern california more people have been forced from their homes as a wild fire continues to grow. that fire is burning at very steep and rugged terrain which is west of palm springs. 6,000 people are evacuated. so far nearly 23,000 acres have burned. one commercial building and six homes are destroyed. and 4,000 other homes are threatened. the concern today is that a spike in heat could make it harder to fight that fire. a lawsuit has been filed against the outside lands music festival. the violence that one woman said she suffered during last year's event at golden gate park. a man is pistol whipped and robbed on the exam pus of san jose -- on the campus of san jose university. traffic is doing okay. a little bit of slowing on northbound 101 as you approach the 880 interchange in san

school is in session but classes haven't started yet this morning. but on twitter students are definitely expressing their concern over what happened here. two armed robberies happened in the spring and the latest happened in the lawn on front of the tommy smith and john carlos statue. the male victim who is not affiliated with the university as a student or staff member told police he was sitting in the grass behind clark hall using his laptop when three black females approached him. he said they pistol whipped him injuring his face and the back of his head and then ran off with his laptop. this has disturbed students and people who frequent the campus. >> it is surprising. i've never really heard of three females jumping a man. mugging a man. let alone on a campus. >> reporter: the female suspect was holding a brass revolver she was about 5'2" and had a

lip piercing. two were wearing red suite shirt and black pants the other was wearing all black. they sent out an alert to students detailing the robbery. they are warning anybody to be careful especially if you are walking at dusk or nighttime and you could always call for a university police escort if you feel threatened or unsafe. reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. a lawsuit has been filed against the outside lands music festival by a woman who says she was raped and robbed during last year's event. that lawsuit claims security did not help the woman as she was assaulted in a wooded area of golden gate park. three women reported being sexually assaulted during last year's festival. organizers have not commented on the lawsuit but they say safety is their top concern. two men could get life in prison after being convicted in the gang rape trial.

20-year-old marcelles peter and jose month tan owe were convicted of all three charges against them. they were on trial for participating in the brutal gang rape of a 16-year-old girl outside richmond high school home coming dance in 2009. they will be sentenced on august 15th. two other men have been convicted in the case. two others are still awaiting trial. tomorrow marks one year after the deadly movie theater shooting in aurora, colorado. a gunman shot and killed 12 people and injured dozens more during a midnight screening of the dark knight. there will be a ceremony at the same park where a gun rights group plans to hold a rally. a couple that survived the movie theater shooting plans to get married tomorrow to turn the tragic anniversary into a positive day. they were on a date when the gunman started shooting inside that theater. han was shot while shielding davis from the bullets and she was right there by his side as

he recovered and he proposed. >> educate brought me back to that night and how he did kind of save me. of course i want to keep him around. steve. sal, thank you. plenty of low clouds around. plenty of breaks here and there. fog coming down a little bit. warm air allot. not really hot, hot. temperatures 50 from coast bay inland. very similar here and a lot of low clouds will keep the coast on the school side. high pressure is building in. today and tomorrow look to be the warmest days. there will be a couple near 100 degrees. that warm air is coming in and really sends that fog down. so a couple locations it gets a little lower and a little lower. some areas are very, very foggy. sonoma county airport says three quarters of a mile visibility. fog burns off sooner as you get this warmer air. around the bay we will get that sun. 50s on the temps for almost everybody. even out to antioch 58. 54 san francisco. only a four degree spread

there. you can see the system out there. the low heads to the coast we cool down. inland temps do rebound into the 80s and 90s. thick fog though westerly breeze still a decent delta breeze out there. as long as that is there the temperatures are hard pressed to warm up too much. again if this isn't the warmest cay inland, there are signs maybe we will start a little cool down tomorrow. maybe not noticeable but it should be by sunday. we are keeping an eye on safeway stocks this morning. right now it's up a little bit in early trading. that is after the pleasanton based super market chain beat wall street expectations. profits fell but some of that was because of charges associated with selling its canadian operations. safeway also reports it is gaining market share away from its competitors. u.s. mortgage rates slipped slightly but they remain close to their highest level in two

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. live look at the big board. dow jones down about 35 points. that is after they both started in record territory. disappointing earnings this morning. definitely hurting things today. happening today san francisco protestors plan to hold a rally and hunger strike to call for justice for trey very march -- trayvon martin. the rally will begin at 11:30 at the california state building. similar rallies are plan third- degree oakland, chicago, los angeles, and new york. conformation of janet napolitano as the next president of university of california was met with a nosey protest in san francisco.

campus police arrested six protestors and removed them from the room. the protestors say the record number of deportations during napolitano's time makes her a bad choice for uc president. napolitano tried to address their concerns. >> documented or undocumented we welcome all students to the university of california. we are here in the business of education. >> napolitano become becomes the female's -- becomes the first female president. online classes at san jose state are on hold after nearly half the students failed their final exams. they announced the suspension of five online classes. less than six months after they debuted. the courses being suspended are statistics, algebra, entry level math, and instruction to psychology. the university says it needs to reevaluate the courses and

considering longer semesters for online students. the city of san francisco is moves forward with a bike registry program to help cut down on the number of stolen bikes. a new report shows more than 4,000 bikes were stolen or carted last year which is up 70% in the past six years. the city says the increase in lefts is likely due to more people riding their bikes in the city. in response they also want to improve police enforcement. muni is can'ted to release a bike parking plan in september. we are getting closer to 7:00. >> we're looking at the toll plaza. traffic is doing okay. no problems getting on to the bridge into san francisco. also going to see traffic on highway 4 westbound. that is the slowest in the bay area really. that is the slow traffic. but 680 looks okay. now to steve. sal lots of areas of fog for some. inland temps recovering.

mainly 50s here this morning. not that warm but some inland locations will get back into the 90s if they didn't see that yesterday. but coast and bay by the water not mutchkin. where the two sides stand now with the new strike deadline looming. deadly officer involved shooting at an east bay market. we learned there was trouble at the same store just last week.
