in 90 minutes we should find out the official cause of death for one of the passengers on flight 214. brian flores is live in san mateo where the announcement will be made. >> reporter: the san mateo county coroner met with the victims' families yesterday to let them know the official cause of death before the results are made public. there will be a news conference at about 10:00 this morning to announce the official cause of death. now, 16-year-old ye mengwuan was found near the left wing of the plane according to investigators. the death raised concerns because there were signs that

nation with the news media creating the nickname for the serial killer. police are searching for tree female suspects after an armed robbery at san jose state university. janine de la vega is live with what police are saying about the robbery that has students on edge. good morning, janine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. well, summer school is in session and there are plenty of people around campus who are using laptops like this. it was a man using his laptop in front of the tommy smith and john carlos statue. he was attacked and robbed. past 8:00 last night, the male victim not affiliated with the university told police he was using his laptop when three -- when three black females pistol- whipped him and attacked him and took his laptop. two suspects were wearing red

sweatshirts and black pant, the other wearing all black. a male student we spoke to said he is surprised a man was the target. >> the females were the targets until now. but a male attack by a female with a gun, that's surprising. i will be more cautious. >> you carry a laptop? >> yeah. a laptop, a tablet, a phone, a lot of things. >> reporter: university police are looking for any information regarding this incident. they sent out an alert to students detailing the robbery. they are asking anybody to report any suspicious information. this is a third armed robbery that's happened this year. two happened in the spring. both of them involved pistols and this latest one again has students concerned. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. there are new concerns over ambulance service in santa clara county and as pam cook reports from our newsroom, the

problems could reach further than that. pam? >> reporter: yeah, rural metro provides 911 emergency ambulance services in 21 states and hundreds of communities, including santa clara county. it's website also says it has operations in parts of alameda and contra costa county. now, the san jose mercury news reports that rural metro missed a crucial bond payment. the company tells us here at ktvu that the board and management team elected not to make that interest payment that was due on july 15th as part of an initiative to better align the company's finances. its credit rating also has been downgraded to junk status. that has county officials scrambling to make alternative arrangements if the company cannot provide service. the company said it's taking action to align operations and financing with current business conditions and it assures the community that "from an operational perspective, it is business as usual at rural

stocks are edging back from record levels that were hit yesterday in early trading today. right now, taking a live look at the big board, the dow's down 31. the nasdaq is down 30.

a much larger percentage. the s&p is down 1. the big reason for the downtrading, it's being led by a slump in the technology sector after microsoft and google reported disappointing earnings. microsoft's stock is down over 10.5%. google's stock is down, but down only 1%. investors are reacting to yesterday's second-quarter earnings report it showed lower than expected earnings and revenue. most of that is blamed on lower ad rates but operating expenses also increased. and safeway stock checking in, .09%. that's after the pleasanton- based supermarket chain beat expectations. profits fell but some of that was profits with selling canadian operations. 8:44. let's get you updated on top of

the other top stories we're following for you -- at 10:00 this morning, we should find out the official cause of death for one of the passengers aboard asiana airlines flight 214. there have been questions about whether the 16-year-old girl survived the crash before being struck by a fire truck responding to the scene. in less than 20 minutes from now, both sides in the b.a.r.t. labor dispute will return to the barging -- bargaining table in oakland. we talked to both the transit agency and the union. they say they are hopeful but the issues remain wage increases, benefits and workers' safety. the investigation continues into a deadly officer-involved shooting in alameda. it happened during a robbery attempt late last night. palm chambers has been following this story. and he joins us with more. >> reporter: this is the 10th hour investigators have been out here. they said there's been issues at the store before, just eight days ago, there was a robbery

there. last night's incident was an attempted robbery. now, this all happened just of a 10:30 last night. alameda police say the two armed men who were wearing a mask or something covering their face came insides market here in the 1500 block of hyde street. according to police, there were two employees inside. one in the stockroom and the other at the register. police say the gunman attempted to rob the store when they came into contact with an off-duty sheriff deputy already inside. the deputy fearing for his life and the lives of the two store employees pulled his gun. >> the deputy ended up shooting and killing one of the suspects who was armed and possibly shot the second suspect we're looking at now. >> investigators are looking at that second suspect. they are checking to see if anyone had beenade mountained for gunshot wounds. no one else was injured. officers say aid coring to witness statements. they do not believe the robbers

fired a single shot. we'll stay on top of this and bring you the latest. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. thank you, paul. 8:46. a fast-moving wildfire in southern california that has destroyed buildings and forced the evacuations of thousands is causing new concerns. the fire is threatening the small mountain town of idyllwild. our reporter is live in the area to tell us why firefighters are keeping a close eye on the weather. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, tori. that's because the conditions are not great. it's supposed to be hot, dry, very windy and firefighters are keeping that in mind as they head back to the front lines. i want to show you where they are going. there's a thick plume of smoke billowing up into the the air. so far this fire has destroyed about 25,000 acres. to give you an understanding that's about roughly 35 square miles. right now there's 3300 firefighters trying to battle this fire. so far it's destroyed about

seven homes. but it's threatening thousands of other homes so thousands of residents have had to evacuate. some have decided to stay and they tell us they really hope the firefighters can get a hasn'tle on this sooner -- handle on this sooner rather than later. as of right now, they have about 15% containment on the fire. like i said, the conditions are not great throughout the rest of the afternoon. they are hoping that some monsoon rains may come through. there's about a 20% chance of rain. they are hoping that could come through and give them a leg up on fighting this fire. tori? >> thank you, will. investigators are looking into the cause of a brush fire in livermore. the fire burned 32 acres before firefighters knocked it down yesterday afternoon. several thoems were threatened but -- homes were threatened but no buildings home. some homeowners helped fight the flames. some online classes at san jose state are on hold after more than half the students failed their exams.

[laughter] >> the two have known each other since elementary school. alameda county sheriff deputies say a mother may have stopped a sun from being kidnapped. it happened wednesday morning in the parking lot of oakland highland's hospital. investigators say the 30-year- old suspect went up to a 6-year- old boy and asked for a high five. the suspect tried to grab the child. his mother held onto him and would not let go. the deputies arrive and arrested the suspect. a lawsuit has been filed against the outside lands music festival by a woman what said she was raped and roobed during the event -- roshed during the event -- robbed during the event. the lawsuit said security did not help her. three women reported being sexually assaulted during last year's festival. organizers have not commented on the lawsuit but they say safety is their top concern. the city of san francisco
