capitol heights in maryland. they're preparing for that rally. there are protests in hundreds of other cities, including new york and miami and los angeles. the bay area will take front and center. there are rallies and vigils throughout the day. we're live in san francisco, alex said it's about to be in two hours. >> reporter: this is one week after the not guilty verdict came down. there will be a series of demonstrations in honor of trayvon martin. it will be outside the federal building in san francisco. this event in particular organized by the national action network, it's a civil rights group headed by al sharp ton. there will be similar justice for trayvon and martin's mother sybrina fulton will be appearing at a rally in new york. they're calling for a federal investigates into the shooting

of unarmed teenager. in the meantime several rallies are planned in oakland throughout the day today. some business owners are bracing for another day of protests. they're anticipating more vandalism as we saw during several heated demonstrations last weekend. nine protestors are arrested by oakland police. they're putting all investors on duty trying to keep control of the crowds. >> i am optimistic they won't be as violent or tumultuous as they were last week. >> they'll get help during today's demonstration. the alamada sheriff's office will have deputies in case things change today. the event will happen in san francisco starts two hours from now, at 9:00 this morning in

front of the federal building on seventh street. we're live alex savage ktvu channel 2 news. >> here's a rundown. the protests of the san francisco federal building begins at 9:00 this morning. a similar demonstration will be held at noon at 2:00. community and religious groups will honor trayvon martin with a service in vallejo and a candlelight vigil for trayvon martin and other people shot to death will be at 7:30 tonight. >> a demonstration last night was an example of a rally that was kept in check. an estimated 200 people marred from downtown to bart station where officer grant was shot and killed in 2009. there are parallels of what happened to grant and trayvon

martin. >> we don't want any violence, we want justice for trayvon martin. >> some officers marred with riot helmets and they documented it with a digital camera. >> why it's strikeing a notify in the african american community. >> when trayvon martin was first shot, i said this could have been my son. another way of saying that trayvon martin could have been me 35 years ago. >> it was a surprise he made an unscheduled appearance before white house reporters, he commented publicly since last saturday's verdict. he talked about being followed in department stores and other prejudices he had growing up. he questioned whether florida's

not stopped crying since her death. she was told over the phone her daughter had been shot and killed. she was sleeping over at a friend's home when someone fired through the front door of the children killing her and wounding two other children and a grandmother. alicia's family called her lady bug. >> i don't feel that the person who took her life should be roaming the street and get to be free when i don't get any more days to spend with my baby. >> oakland police are hoping that witnesses and surveillance video will help them find the shooter. this marks the one year anniversary of the aurora shooting in colorado. james holmes killed 12 people and injured 70 others. the shooting took place during a mid night screening of the batman film, the dark night

rises. he pled not guilty by insanity. his trial is set to begin next friday. on the eve of the anniversary, the rallies were held targeting gun violence. >> some day there will be peace, some day the lore record of those memories will be placed with feelings of joy and hope that this is lessening. >> victims and family shooting tragedies of aurora called for gun control and they held a counter rally nearby. >> it's a tragedy about what happened in aurora that we had to have rememberances like that. if one person in that theatre had a concealed carry, james holmes would have been dead. >> it was sponsored by mayors against illegal guns. the movement began last week in the site of newtown,

connecticut. >> an italian court has convicted five employees of manslaughter. in january of last year, the coast of concord i can't hit a reef near tuscan and nearly sank. they're sentences ranged from one to three years. the ship's captain is on trial foreman slaughter. he's accused of causing the accident and abandoning the ship with thousands of people still on board. there's construction on the bay bridge, this time on the western span. they put in shock absorbers and more than a third have leaked lubricant. cal trance is being questioned whether it ordered the right shocks to begin with. repairs could cost $13 million estimated. >> fog along the coast, today may be a different story? more of the same for the coastline. that ridge of high pressure is

struck by lightning. meanwhile a bar in las vegas, check out what's happening in that ceiling. that bar had to be evacuated after the water came through. the bars inside treasure island and that left water gushing into the dance floor in the bar and no one was hurt and it's expected to be reopened today. >> a woman has died from falling out of the tallest roller coaster in the world. it happened yesterday in arlington texas. a spokesperson from the park, she died while on the giant roller coaster. witnesses say she fell out during the ride. >> the ride has been closed until investigators determine her cause of death. >> at the same time authorities are investigating an accident at an amusement park in ohio.

it rolled backward in a hill and all several people were hurt, seven people, several people weighedded in the water to help those passengers out. the ride is temporarily closed. a new york woman is being accused of fraudulently collecting half a million dollars for a fund set up for the boston marathon bombing victims. she claims she suffered a traumatic brain injury in the attack. they determined she may not have even been in boston at the time of the bombings. they're trying to recover the money and return it to the fund. >> they're reaching out to the family of the asiana flight victim hit and killed by a fire truck. they've requested to have sit down meetings with the family. they want to bring her home soon. >> i think the family and maybe

sharp ton. they'll be watching him and they're calling for a civil rights investigation into the shooting death of martin, the teenager killed in florida. there will be several rallies going on in oakland throughout the day. many of the downtown business owners are bracing for protests and vandalism. they are keeping plywood on their windows anticipating there could be problems as they saw last weekend. nine protestors were arrested by oakland police and now the department are putting all available officers on duty to keep control of the crowds later today and they'll be getting help from neighboring agencies. >> to make sure that nobody is injured, to keep the peace, to prevent vandalism and any other crimes that take place. the alamada sheriff's

office will have its deputies to come in to oakland and step out if the protests turn violent today. it happens outside of the federal building and there will be other events in oakland and the vigil for trayvon martin begins l.a. hour and a half from now, at 9:00 outside the federal building in san francisco. we're live in morning in stand fran alex savage channel 2 ktvu news. >> the department is well short of complying with court ordered reform. the oakland police department is making a slight improvement, the monitor says the department has completed more than half of the 51 reforms that were agreed upon back in 2003 to settle a police corruption scandal. the mayor and the interim police chief are making changes but he believes the former

chief not doing enough when he was the leader of the force. authorities in alamada are looking for two men tried to rob a place on thursday night. the deputy killed one man and wounded the other. they believe the same two men may have robbed the same store last week. the store owner says he plans to install more security cameras. a man allegedly armed with a machete, he got a report that he was chasing kids at the park. a 70 minute stand off followed. they used bullets and a flash bang to get him to surrender. he was arrested for assault with a dangerous weapon. >> this happened on june 23rd, an assault on a girl in a bookstore. investigators are just

releasing details of the crime. this surveillance video shows the moments before and after a man in his 50s exposed himself and inappropriately touched a 10-year-old girl. >> never let your kids go to the bathroom alone. sometimes i think your kids are old enough going to the bathroom. i did that too, you can't anymore. they released this picture of the suspect. they got into a dirty black or four-door gray car. anyone who sees him is asked to call police. police say the boy was rideing a skate board and lost control and hit a light pole. he was not wearing a helmet. a five-year-old boy was bit

the leg by a snake. the boy who was the brother went into the bushes and apparently stepped on the snake. >> before the paramedics it was swelling and bruising and it didn't look very good. >> the boy received antivenom in the hospital and is expected to be released today. snakes are more active in the hot weather so they're urging people to ask where they step especially in the dry grassy areas. and with a view in the park made his debut in the park today. it marked the 25th year. new this year a $15 admission. more than a dozen san jose police officers and twice as many private security guards. last year's concert was cancelled after a stabbing several years before.

the threat of thunderstorms in southern california have firefighters concerned about a growing wildfire. the lieutenant governor declared a state of emergency which is burning near palm springs. it's only 25% contained. another 700 homes have been evacuated. 6,000 people have spent throw days in mandatory evacuation centers. six cars, six homes and a commercial building have been destroyed. another fire is burning out of control on i5 on the grapevine in southern california. it's threatening to shut down the highway, a major artery between southern and northern california. it may have been sparked by a big rig on the highway. fire prevention costs residents

they took the driver into custody. the suspect had knowledge of how to operate those buses. the bus route that runs from napa to the ferry terminal, route 11 will no longer every 45 minutes, but will run 90 minutes. route 10 will run 30 minutes, but will have a new schedule to make stops. this comes in part because of the traffic congestion in the southern part of the country. they're allowing for a second bridge to be built. by the tend of 2014, that stretch of highway 24 will have two more lanes. it's under budget and ahead of schedule. hundreds of sat scores

step. san mateo core nor said that the victim survived the crash but died with blunt force injuries consistent with a vehicle running her over by the plane. she may have been struck by more than one fire fighting rig. >> there is a push to stop this in california. they are trying to put a hold on same sex marriages. it applies to alamada and los angeles counties where the two couples lived and not the entire state. they issued a statement about the clerk's filing. it says in part the federal injunction is in effect and it requires all 58 counties to perform same sex marriages. the city of richmond is

hundreds are demonstrating in the protest of the not guilty verdict for george zimmerman. >> it's being called a national day of action. people across the country will march on federal buildings and courthouses. we're live at the federal building there where rallies are scheduled in 30 minutes. protestors are trying to keep this momentum that's been going for the past week ever since that not guilty came down a week ago in the zimmerman trial. they'll be planning a series of rallies across the country.

it includes events in the bay area. at 9:00 this morning, they'll be a rally in honor of trayvon martin. it's on seventh street. this event is organized by the national action network which is a civil rights organization headed up by al sharp ton. there are vigils going on in 100 cities. they'll appear with reverand sharpton. they'll be appearing in a rally as well. they're protesting the acquittal of george zimmerman. the head of this rally protestors are calling for a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting death of trayvon martin, that unarmed teenager. >> we chose federal buildings, we want to put pressure on the

federal government that the state of government did not. the federal government has a history with the civil rights movement of being pressured into act willing nationally when states would not. >> meantime a similar rally is planned for noon in oakland and there will be other demonstrations throughout the day as well. downtown business owners are bracing for what they said could be a day of violent protests. many have kept up employ wood in case it breaks out. they're putting awful all of their available officers on duty to keep control of the cloud and they'll be getting help from the alamada sheriff's office. they have deputies on stand by just in case protests get out of control later today. the oakland rally is said to start at noon in that city. and this vigil in honor of trayvon martin gets started at 9:00 outside the federal

. good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2. it is saturday, july 20th. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. we want to get you right over to rosemary for a look at how your day is warming up, right, rosemary? >> yes, a minor warmup in store for the afternoon. this morning, clouds along the coast. inside the bay, temperatures a lot like how we started yesterday morning as well. but for the afternoon, a few degrees of warming expected in most cases. today will be the warmest day of the weekend, as a cooldown begins tomorrow. i'll lay it all out for you, coming up. at 9:01, we do have breaking news out of oakland. a crash involving a big rig and a car, blocking lanes on northbound 880. this is a live picture from our roof cam, where you can still see some activity over there on 880. this all happened around the north broadway exit around 45 minutes ago. a car ended up underneath the big rig. it appears two people may have been hurt. you can see traffic moving along that section of roadway,

but it is blocking a couple of lanes. so you will experience a slowdown. it may take a while to clear that up. we'll keep monitoring it and bring you the latest as we get it. turning now to the rallies happening now, to protest the acquittal of george zimmerman. this is a live look right now, monitoring demonstrations since the first ones began in florida about two hours ago. now, earlier, we did hear from the father of trayvon martin, who said he's fighting for both his child, as well as everyone else's. this rally you're looking at, just one of more than 100 demonstrations expected nationwide today. our own ktvu's alex savidge is in san francisco at a protest just getting under way. >> reporter: protesters want the federal government to take action in the trayvon martin shooting. that's why they gathered here, gathering here outside the federal building this morning.

just beyond us, you can see on 7th street, there is a small group of people beginning to pick up their signs and we're told this rally, in honor of trayvon martin, part of this national day of action, expected to get started at any moment. let me show you what the scene looked like a few minutes ago, as we watched people making signs. many are calling for the justice department to prosecute neighborhood watch volunteer george zimmerman for the shooting death of trayvon martin. the teenager was unarmed at the time. this event is being organized by the national action network, a civil rights group headed up by the reverend al sharpton. and there are similar justice for trayvon vigils being held in more than a hundred cities across the country today. protesters are calling for a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting. >> we're expecting a peaceful assembly of people who are calling for the department of justice to investigate and prosecute george zimmerman on civil rights violations. >> reporter: now, today's

rallies come after a week of demonstrations over the not guilty verdict for zimmerman. this was the scene here in san francisco last weekend, as people took to the streets for a march. this was last sunday. bringing you back out to a live picture, again, outside of the federal building in san francisco on 7th street, where protesters are gathering and they are set to honor trayvon martin and they are also calling for a federal investigation into the shooting death of the unarmed teenager. again, this rally is expected to get started at any moment. live this morning here in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2news. some of the largest rallies are planned in oakland throughout the day. police say they are bringing in extra officers in hopes of preventing the violence seen earlier this week. the department says every available officer is going to be on duty to try to maintain crowd control. >> i'm optimistic that the events will not be as violent or as tumultuous as they were this past week. >> the alameda county sheriff's office will have deputies

standing by. oakland police called for a mutual aid monday night, after protesters marched onto the 880 freeway. businesses that sustained damage during this week's protests are keeping plywood over their windows, just in case more violence breaks out tonight. merchants and city leaders worry about the economic ramifications of these demonstrations. they say oakland's reputation for destructive protests have some businesses holding back from filing insurance claims. they are worried their insurance rates are going to go up, or insurance companies may actually cancel policies all together. merchants may pass on added costs to consumers or may cut staff to save money. a rundown of bay area rallies today, as alex mentioned earlier, the protest at the san francisco federal building is just getting under way. a similar demonstration will be held at the federal building in oakland at noon. and then at 2:00, community and religious groups will hold a trayvon martin service at jesse bethel high school in vallejo. and there is a candlelight vigil remembering martin and other young people shot to

death at merritt starting at 7:30 tonight. oakland police say a demonstration last night is an example of a rally that was kept in check. >> oakland united! >> we'll never be divided! >> estimated 200 people marched from downtown to the fruitvale bart station, where oscar grant was shot and killed in 2009. protesters say there are parallels between what happened to grant and what happened to trayvon martin. >> we're peaceful, trying to be peaceful! we don't want to be bothered! all we want is justice for trayvon martin. >> police followed the marchers to make sure the rally remained peaceful. president obama is explaining why the zimmerman acquittal is striking a nerve within the african american community. >> when trayvon martin was first shot, i said that this could have been my son. another way of saying that is trayvon martin could have been

me 35 years ago. >> in a bit of a surprise, the president made an unscheduled appearance before white house reporters. he commented publicly on the case for the first time since last saturday's verdict. mr. obama talked about being followed in department stores and other prejudices he faced growing up. he says the nation must do some, quote, soul searching over race relations and questioned whether florida's stand your ground law prevents or incites crime. we talked to young african american men about their experiences growing up in the bay area. they all echoed sentiments of the president of being victims of racial profiling. one man said he was suspected of shoplifting at age 9 in a store. >> racial profiling is still a problem. systematically, i think it's more subtle than it is blatant. >> the young man we talked to hoped the president's comments

will spark more dialogue on race relations in america. long-time white house correspondent helen thomas has died. thomas was the first female member of the white house press corps. she sat in the front row for decades and pressed presidents for answers. thomas retired in 2010, after she was caught on video saying israel should get out of palestine. the gridiron club in washington, dc announced her death this morning and said it came after a long illness. helen thomas was 92 years old. there is word of another problem on the bay bridge, but this time, it is on the western span. crews installed 96 seismic shock absorbers back in 2004. the chronicle reports that more than a third have leaked lubricant. the paper also reports that similar to the faulty bolts on the eastern span, cal trans is being questioned over whether it ordered the right shocks to begin with. repairs could cost an estimated $13 million. we are just two weeks away from another possible bart

strike. and while negotiations continue, the two sides are not sounding very optimistic about reaching a deal. the two unions representing train operators, station agents and engineers say they are frustrated that bart's chief negotiator won't be available until july 29th. bart says since its other negotiators are available, talks next week can go ahead as planned. happening today, congressman nancy pelosi will be honored in san francisco. a walkway in her honor will be dedicated to pelosi in a ceremony held at 10:30 this morning. pelosi was the driving force to establish the grove in golden gate park back in 1996. she'll be joined by hundreds of volunteers who have worked on the grounds over the years. starting out with a live look here at mount diablo, moderate air quality in the forecast for today. you see just a little bit of haze there. atop mount diablo, in the 80s. i'll show you that in a moment and explain why. first, giving you a look at all the gray remaining over parts of the north bay, hugging the

. welcome back. thank you for joining us on this saturday morning. a live look there at san jose. 61 degrees outside your doors. today marks the first anniversary of the deadly movie theater shooting in aurora, colorado. overnight, a large crowd held a vigil near the theater where police say gunman james holmes killed 12 people and injured 70 others. the crowd prayed and held a moment of silence. the shooting took place during a midnight screening of the batman film "the dark knight rises." holmes has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to 166 charges. his trial is set to begin next february. on the eve of the anniversary, rallies were held, targeting gun violence. >> someday, there will be peace. someday, the horror of those memories may be replaced with feelings of joy and with feelings of hope that this is lessening. >> victims and family members

of the shooting tragedies in aurora and columbine read the names of those killed by guns and called for stricter gun control. gun rights supporters held a counter rally nearby. >> it's a tragedy, what happened in aurora, that we have to have remembrances like this. but if one person in that theater would have had a concealed carry, james holmes would have been dead. >> the remembrance rally was sponsored by mayors against illegal guns. that movement began last week at the site of another mass shooting, newtown, connecticut. new this morning, plea bargains have been reached for five employees of an italian cruz ship disaster that killed 32 people. in january of last year, the costa concordia hit a reef near tuscany and partially sank. this morning, a judge charged five of the ship's employees with manslaughter and negligence. they received sentences that range from one to three years. the ship's captain is on trial for manslaughter, accused of causing that accident and then

abandoning the ship with thousands of people still on board. san francisco's fire chief and mayor are reaching out to the family of the asian in a flight 214 victim hit and killed by a fire rig. they have requested a meeting with the family and are hoping to speak with the family before the girl's body is taken home to china. the chinese consulate says the family wants to bring her home soon. >> i think the family and maybe their attorney will, you know, discuss with the coroner's office about the next step. >> yesterday, the san mateo county coroner said the teen died of blunt force injuries consistent with being run over by a vehicle outside the plane. investigators say the 16-year- old was lying on the ground and may have been struck by more than one fire fighting rig. a woman has died while riding the tallest steel hybrid roller coaster in the world. police say it happened yesterday just after 6:30 p.m. at the six flags in arlington,

texas. a spokesperson for the park has only said the woman died while on the 14-story high coaster. witnesses, however, are saying she fell out during the ride. >> she goes up, like this, and then when it drops to come down, that's when it released and she just tumbled. >> six flags remained open after the accident, but the ride has been shut down until investigators determine the exact cause of death. arlington police say this is not a criminal investigation. right now, it appears to be an accident. a new york woman is being accused of fraudulently collecting nearly half a million dollars from a fund set up for the boston marathon bombing victims. 26-year-old andrea gous appeared in court yesterday. investigators say she claimed she suffered a traumatic brain injury during the attack, but later determined that gous may not have even been in boston at the time of the bombings. police are now trying to recover the money and return it to the fund. new this morning, president obama touts the achievements of a new consumer protection unit.

beginning. ktvu's alex savidge is live in the middle of the rally at the federal building. alex? >> reporter: yeah, and a pretty good sized crowd here outside of the federal building right now. take a look at what's going on. dozens of people taking part in this rally, to honor the memory of trayvon martin. the reason it's happening here outside of the federal building is a very important one. everyone here, everyone taking part is calling for the federal government to take action and investigate the shooting death of trayvon martin. of course the unarmed black teenager in florida was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer george zimmerman. zimmerman, of course, was acquitted a week ago. ever since that not guilty verdict, there have been rallies, demonstrations and protests across the country. people are coming from all over to take part in this particular event. i want to introduce you to the martin family from haywood, one of many people taking part. why is it important for you to be here, stephan? >> i think it's very important, especially because i can take

self action and participate in the trayvon martin case and the movement. there's been a lot of different injustices all over the system and throughout the united states that need to be addressed, and this is how we can take self involvement and try to resolve most of these matters, hopefully fully instead of partially. >> reporter: so the not guilty verdict is not the end of things? you plan to take part in more of these? >> well, hopefully i can for the most part lend my support and take part in the majority of the events that are still to come and hopefully just by using activism, self activism and making myself accountable and also for anything else, that's how i could help with most of these events throughout the nation in the country. >> reporter: stephan, thank you for your time, stephan martin from heyward, one of many people taking part in the rally

outside the federal building this morning to honor the memory of trayvon martin. this is part of a national day of action rally and vigil, events happening across the country in more than a hundred cities. this one, well under way here in san francisco and will be for sometime. live in san francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2news. the mother of the 8-year- old girl killed in oakland this week says she hasn't stopped crying since she learned of her daughter's death. chiquita caredean was out of town when it happened and was told over the phone when her 8- year-old daughter was killed. she was sleeping over at a friend's house when someone fired through the front door of the apartment, killing her and wounding two other children and a grandmother. the family called the little girl "lady bug." >> i don't think feel like the person who took her life should be able to roam the streets and be free when i don't get to spend any more days with my baby. >> a private funeral is tentatively set for the 30th.

oakland police are hoping witnesses and neighborhood surveillance video will help them find the person responsible. authorities in alameda are still looking for one of two robbery suspects shot by a sheriffs deputy. the deputy was off duty and shopping at the bon fair market when two armed maskt men tried to rob the place on thursday night. police say the deputy killed one man and wounded the other. investigators say they believe the same two men may have robbed the same store last week. the store owner says he plans to install more security cameras. the independent monitor supervising oakland police says the department is well short of complying with court-ordered reforms. the latest quarterly reports say the oakland police department is making a, quote, slight improvement. the monitor says the department has completed more than half of the 51 reforms that were agreed upon back in 2003 to settle a police corruption scandal. the monitor says mayor jean quan and the interim police chief are making changes, but he blames the former chief, howard jordan, for not doing enough when he was the leader of the force. police in vallejo arrested

a man armed with a gun and machete, who allegedly chased children right through a park. officers say they came across frederick heinz after getting a report that a man with a knife was chasing children at delta meadows park. they surrounded heinz' home and a 70-minute stand-off followed. police used foam bullets and a flash bang to get heinz to surrender. he was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. police in san mateo are looking for a suspect who they say victimized a young girl inside a book store. now, this all happened on june 23rd inside the barnes & noble at the hills dale shopping center. investigators are just now releasing details and this surveillance video, which they say shows the moments before and after a man in his fifties exposed himself, then inappropriately touched a 10- year-old girl. >> never let your kids go to the bathroom alone. i mean, sometimes i see people think their kids are old enough to go to the bathroom. i catch myself doing that too. you just can't anymore.

>> police also released this sketch of the suspect. they say he's about 6 feet tall and was seen getting into a dirty black or gray four-door car. anyone who recognizes the man is asked to call police. a highway patrol arrested a man who they say stole a transit bus from a terminal in san francisco. officers were able to track the bus for about 100 miles and used spikes on the roadway to flatten the tires of the bus and took the driver into custody. they say the suspect appeared to have pretty good knowledge of how to operate ac transit buses. a 15-year-old boy is recovering this morning from a serious head injury after a skateboarding rash in pleasanton. police say the boy was riding his skateboard down a hill on gray fox circle thursday, when he lost control and hit a light pole. the boy was taken to the hospital. police say he was not wearing a helmet. there is a warning going out in contra costa county this morning, after a 5-year-old boy was bitten in the leg by a snake. it happened during a little league game at the blackhawk baseball field in danville. the boy, who is the brother of

one of the players, went into the bushes and apparently stepped on the snake. >> the fangs marks were bleeding. before the paramedics took him, it was swelling and bruising and didn't look good. >> the boy received antivenom in the hospital and is expected to be released today. wildlife experts say snakes are more active in hot weather and so they are urging people to be careful where you step, especially if you're in a dry, grassy area. well, 12 people are displaced this morning after a house fire in san jose. that fire started at 6:20 last night on linkside court near millbrook elementary school. multiple calls reported two homes on fire. firefighters say gas meter broke off one of the homes, feeding the flames. so far, the cause of the fire isn't known. no one was hurt. the threat of thunderstorms in southern california today have firefighters concerned about a growing wildfire there. california lieutenant governor gavin newsom declared a state of emergency for the fire, burning near palm springs. it has already burned more than 27,000 acres and is only 25%

contained. another 700 homes have been  evacuated. 6000 people spent three days in mandatory evacuation centers. six houses, six cars, and a commercial building have been destroyed. california's new rural fire tax is sparking controversy. the fire prevention fee cost about 825,000 residents an extra $150 a year. but some homeowners don't want to pay and are now trying to sue the state. a judge must approve that lawsuit, so yesterday, homeowners opposed to the fee showed up inside a sacramento courtroom. the judge took the case under submission and is expected to deliver a written ruling. . starting out with an up- close look into emeryville, you can see the buildings there. a near mirror image of what we saw yesterday. low clouds are hugging the coastline this morning, inside the bay, into the coastal valleys. ridge of high pressure building and continuing for our warmup

this afternoon. i want to give you a still shot here. we've got the low clouds again along the coast, inside the bay. but i also want to point to this down here at the bottom of the screen. that monsoonal moisture eventually working its way into our area. not today, not tomorrow, but by monday, the possibility of just mid and high level clouds in the forecast. today, the warmest day. again, that ridge of high pressure nudging our way just a little bit more. our inland communities, well into the 90s, perhaps flirting with the century mark. around the bay, another beautiful day. along the coastline, it's going to be partly to mostly cloudy and cool once again. so it's monday that i think, again, we'll see some of this move into our direction. if you're going to tahoe for the weekend, keep an eye on that. there is a slight possibility of thunderstorms for tahoe for today, as well as tomorrow, into the afternoon. let's take a look at that low cloud deck. over the last hour or so, i have begun to see it thin out a bit. i put the time lapse on here so you can see it for yourself. by 10:00, 11:00, mostly sunny skies away from the coastline and we'll be mostly sunny again

. a live look over the bay point area this morning. mostly sunny skies for your afternoon, as the warmup continues for your saturday. more severe thunderstorms and high winds are expected in las vegas today. the storm there has knocked down several trees, power poles, causing major flooding along a las vegas strip. authorities received several calls from people who had to be rescued from the water. the national weather service also says several buildings were struck by lightning. more than 200 advanced placement tests at a bay area high school have been invalidated by the college board. the board says mills high school in mill bray failed to

administer proper seating arrangements. according to the mercury news, distance between desks and the direction students faced were not regulated. a spokeswoman for the college board says some of the students may have gained an unfair advantage. so far, no one has reported any cheating. animal welfare workers in roseville are asking the public's help to find the person responsible for abusing a young kitten. this black kitten was found in the bushes. someone hurt him by cutting off his ears. with round-the-clock care, the kitten is expected to fully recover, but authorities say whoever did this needs to be found and held accountable. >> in my opinion, it's not a safe community when there are people who are responsible for doing these types of things that are not apprehended and held accountable. >> the placer county spca is offering a $1000 reward for information that will help catch the person who committed the crime. investigators say that until

that person is caught, they are worried more animals could suffer the same abuse. a bear cub in truckee is recovering this morning, thanks to help from law enforcement at an animal rescue center. the cub had been hit by a car a week and a half ago, suffering a broken leg. the bear was then found in a tree yesterday. rescuers actually climbed up the tree and were able to bring him to safety. the cub did undergo surgery and is said to be doing fine. potential sexual harassment victims tied to san diego mayor bob fillner now have a confidential way to share their story. the san diego county sheriff's department has set up a victims hotline specifically for the investigation. callers will be connected with the central investigations division. if necessary, they will be brought in for interview with detectives. mayor fillner is accused of unwanted sexual behavior by several women. people on both sides of the issue say they expect a complete investigation. >> if the allegations are proven to be true, he should be processed through the highest extent of the law, just like

anybody else. but to have this kangaroo court and this public execution is absolutely wrong. >> mayor fillner says he has no plans to resign. he says he's glad the allegations are now being addressed by police and not just the media. former santa clara county supervisor george shirakawa faces a new felony charge. he has already pled guilty to corruption charges, but prosecutors say they recently discovered his dna on the stamps of illegal campaign flyers. yesterday in court, his attorneys argued filing new charges violates the terms of his plea deal. the assistant da now says she expects shirakawa to be sentenced in late october or possibly as early as september. without any changes, california's healthcare costs are expected to sky rocket. recent studies show by 2022, the average california family could be forced to spend one third of its annual income on health insurance. area doctors say the key to fixing this crisis is changing our current model of fee for

service. under that model, patient payments are based on the number of tests and treatments performed, rather than the medical outcome. and the city of richmond is suing one of its councilman, saying he's let one of his properties turn into a junk yard. the lawsuit was filed against councilman corky bouza on wednesday. he could be fined as much as $3500 per day for noncompliance and could be held responsible for legal costs. city officials say the property he owns is filled with rusted- out cars, oil drums and other hazardous materials. for 11 straight days, gas prices increased, but so far, yesterday's rates have remained the same. aaa reports the national average crept up 9-cents a gallon last week, up 22-cents from last year. people in hawaii are paying the highest prices, at $4.36 for a gallon of regular unleaded. california, not far behind at just about $4 a gallon. and here is a look at what we are paying right here in the bay area. san francisco, average price for a gallon of gas, $4.10.

oakland, $3.97. in san jose, $3.94. tesla motors plans to build the new test track now that it has more room for cars to drive. the electric car maker just bought 35 acres of land from union pacific. the land is right next to the tesla factory in fremont and includes a test track from the old gm/toyota factory. analysts believe tesla will expand the old test track so engineers can test new vehicles. tesla plans to begin delivering its latest vehicle next year. apple purchased a couple of map apps that could be used to help improve its own apple apps. locationary and hot spot were purchased. analysts speculate the company will use the technology to improve apple maps with the hopes of bettering google maps. users complained last year it was inaccurate and lacked

. time now, 8:53, recapping top stories this morning, demonstrations are under way nationwide to protest the acquittal of george zimmerman. this is a rally at the federal building in san francisco, under way right now. it started a little after 9:00. rallies are also planned for oakland today, including one at noon. police are promising a heavy presence of officers there. the mother of the 8-year- old girl killed this week in oakland says she has not stopped crying since she learned of her daughter's death. the 8-year-old was sleeping at a friend's home wednesday night when someone fired through the front door of the apartment, killing her, wounding two other children and a grandmother. and there is word of another problem on the bay bridge, but this time, it's on the western span. crews installed 96 seismic shock absorbers back in 2004.

the chronicle reports that more than a third have leaked lubricant. after a successful season on the court, golden state warriors' ticket sales are booming. the warriors say they have added 2900 season ticket holders since their season ended in the second round of the playoffs and new sales come, despite a 20% increase in ticket prices. officials say the warriors now have more than 13,600 season ticket holders, which is the most in franchise history and the second biggest total in the league. warrior girls are looking for bay area women who can show off their dance skills on the basketball court. this morning, they are holding auditions for next year's dance team. auditions are under way right now. they began at 9:00 at the warriors practice facility in oakland and they are taking walk-ins with a $25 registration fee. some urban artists in oakland are teaming up to replace graffiti with murals. the program is called get active. it was started by jonathan

brumfield, an oakland middle and high school teacher. he says many of its members are former graffiti vandals. brumfield used to be a tagger himself, but now shows students how to transform a destructive activity into a positive one. >> showing the kids that instead of scrawling on the walls, i can teach you how to be a graphic designer through this artform. it gets kids reengaged in education. that's the whole point. honestly speaking, it really changes a lot of young people's' lives around violence. >> brumfield has received a grant to help his students paint over buildings covered with graffiti. many of the building owners are saying the program is a win-win situation for everyone. nearly 200 volunteers in san francisco are working together to clean up their neighborhoods. the department of public works scheduled today's event as a tribute to nobel peace prize winner nelson mandela. the event started about an hour ago and lasts until noon. participants will remove weeds, paint over graffiti and pick up litter. today's efforts only focus on district 11 in the southern part of the city. giving your dog a bath today could help save the life
