>> reporter: we're live in oakland as protesters take to the streets. some, as you see, on wheels to denounce the not guilty verdict in the george zimmerman trial. we'll tell you how police are trying to prevent a repeat of last week's violent marches. trayvon martin's mother attends one of the other protests today all over the country. an oakland mother speaks publicly for the first time since the shooting death of her 8-year-old daughter at a slumber party.

good evening. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. it's been a day full of protests all over the country with people calling for justice for trayvon martin. we want to show you a live look from news over downtown oakland. there's protesters on bicycles on the streets. that's oakland city hall on the left side of the screen. they are right near frank ogawa plaza. that's been the epicenter of the protest for the last few days as oakland and other cities across the country participate in these protests against the george zimmerman verdict. we've been covering the demonstrations all day long. ktvu's jade hernandez is following protesters but we begin with noelle walker. >> reporter: this is where a bike protest is. people gathered around 5:00. just a short minutes ago, they went on the move. you can see from newschopper2 they are at 14th and broadway. right now we're told they are on their way to west oakland. this is one of many rallies

planned today. earlier we were at a rally downtown where any talked about having peaceful demonstrations today. >> what do we want! >> justice! >> reporter: tiny voices echo through the buildings. they are too young to understand. >> this is the first one i'm bringing toy child to. >> reporter: we met this man and his 3-year-old son corey preparing for the rally for trayvon martin. >> so many things could have been avoided. he did not have to lose his life. >> reporter: those little voices got help in amplified ster stereo. >> as they merged to join many rallies today. a crowd of hundreds from different backgrounds. >> black, white, brown. >> reporter: different races, different ages. >> you may not get to reach your dreams tomorrow or the next day. you better try to do something to get closer to that.

[ cheers ] >> reporter: a melting pot of people coming together to try to mold a new feature, one where they said wearing a hoodie is just a fashion statement, not something to fear. >> as the mother of a 16-year- old that scares me to death. >> reporter: this boy, malik told me -- >> not seeing my family anymore. >> reporter: mayor quan stepped up to the parents. >> we have to honor the parents -- >> shut up! >> reporter: hecklers tried to drowned her out. mayor, were you disappointed by the boos. >> yeah, the radical anarchists have never liked me. so that's okay. >> reporter: the message was the same for everyone else here, peace and change. that rally was peaceful. over and over again, we heard calls for no violence, only peaceful rallies. later on tonight, there's

supposed to be a vigil at lake merritt. noelle walker, ktvu channel 2 news. another than a hundred cities held rallies demanding justice for trayvon martin. thousands attended the rally in atlanta, many carrying signs or wearing t-shirts of martin. martin luther king said his work remains unfinished. a small crowd carried pictures of trayvon martin through the streets of sanford, florida. that's the place he was killed and his hometown. it was a week ago the jury found george zimmerman not guilty in the shooting death. >> not only do i vow for you to do what i can for trayvon martin, i promise to work hard for your children as well. >> trayvon martin's mother told protesters she would keep fighting for her son's rights and the rights of her children. beyonce and jay-z were among

the celebrities who attended a demonstration in this manhattan. there was an emotional vigil outside of the building. >> this is now three years. we cannot let this go! >> more than a hundred people called for the justice department to file civil rights charges against george zimmerman. this woman brought her threen -- brought her to the rally. >> it was like walking into a 1950 or 1960 courtroom and -- it was a joke. >> martin's says zimmerman's not guilty heard is hard for her to understand. other protesters say they have the chance to show black youth they are valued. you can follow the demonstrations happening across the bay area. go to ktvu.com. click on the bay area news tab and you will find more video and slide shows. fairfield police say

officers shot and killed a man following a chase. two fairfield officers tried to stop a hummer for a traffic violation at grant and east taber avenue just after 9:00 last night. the officers pursued the hummer until it got stock an an embankment in suisun. the officers fatally shot the man. his name has been release. he had an extensive history. the body of a missing woman was found today at the bottom of a steep ravine in a car. mary garvey went missing thursday night on a way to a church memorial service. orinda police say searchers located her car today and alerted authorities. no word on what may have caused the car to go over the ravine. the mother of an 8-year-old girl shot and killed this week in oakland says she hopes someone can help police track down the killer. >> i want justice for her death. i don't feel like the person

that took her life should be able to roam the streets and be free when i don't get to spend any more days with my baby. >> she spoke with reporters for the first time last night. she ras out of town on wednesday when she learned that her daughter had been stuck and killed by an apartment door. three others were wounded. the funeral for the girl known as lady bug is tentativety set for july 30th. el cerrito police announced the arrest of a registered sexual off fenner. investigators stopped him on thursday for a vehicle code violation. a check of hayward's personal information turned up his checks offender status. police say hayward told him he was taking modeling pictures of the girl in the car and was on his way to buy alcohol. the girl was placed in protective custody and hayward

was arrested. officers say they got a report that an armed man was threatening children at delta meadows park at about 8:30 last night. no one was hurt. this is the man and after an hour-long standoff at his home, police used flesh grenades to get him to surrender. volunteers gathered to honor years of efforts in the fight against a.i.d.s. [ applause ] >> the nancy pelosi leadership walkway was officially opened to the public at the national a.i.d.s. member grove in san francisco. representative pelosi's young grandchildren were amongle vos to help flowers and shrubs at the memorial in gl park. >> these kids will live into the next century and they will say when they go to a museum

some place they will say there used to be this thing called a.i.d.s. >> this is meant to be a quiet place where people can reflect and draw hope. security remains tight around many of the rallies happening in oakland. many of those rallies taking place to denounce the not guilty verdict in the zimmerman trial. jade hernandez continues our coverage with a group that's on the move. jade? >> reporter: we're live at 7th and peralta. just behind me you can see a caravan of police officers. this is where some of the protesters for the bike for trayvon will be coming down. in fact, we're live at 7th and peralta where the revolution cafe is located. that's where protesters were expected to end up. now, police have kept their eyes on all of these movements which have been very fluid today, stopping and starting at various spots here in oakland. police even say pretty close to

a rally we attended about an hour ago. >> free, marissa! , free, free, marissa! >> reporter: due to the zimmerman verdict. marissa alexander's story has gained attention which explains this banner. she's a florida woman currently serving a 20-year sentence for firing a warning shot at her husband who claimed was threatening her. her attorney used the stand- your-ground law and prosecutors rejected it. now, we watched as nine officers walked behind the march from frank ogawa plaza to lake merritt. about a dozen police officer, including squad cars sand police vehicles -- and police vehicles followed behind the march. included in that, an ambulance. we toke to someone woman who --

spoke to one woman who said she didn't want to participate. >> i don't want to be labeled with somebody who is trying to break things. all of the marches have been ladled with police i don't see how that's happening -- how that's helping the communities. >> reporter: the city says in order to increase this weekend's police presence, they canceled all vacation for officers and oakland police will receive some help from outside law enforcement agencies. we're live at 7th and peralta where the revolution cafe is. there's a rally and bike rally going on, they are expected to end up at this location. we'll have more at 10:00. helping veterans from world war ii all the way to iraq and afghanistan. the kinds of services these vets found at the event in the

dozens of veterans gathered at a job fair. >> reporter: a sunny day was the perfect backdrop for dozens of veteran, to find much-needed assistance. >> we're not looking for handouts. we're looking for opportunities. this fair brought in vets from vets from world war ii to the

revent conflicts in afghanistan and iraq. >> i'm currently looking. maybe looking to go back to school. interested in some of the benefits to get back to school. >> i just wanted to talk with one of the representatives to see at what one point my claim was. >> >> reporter: the vets had private conversations with veterans administration officials. that was only the beginning. this showed veterans how to avoid things like being foreclosed on and defrauded. >> there's people that set them up as a counselor that will help the veterans access their veterans benefits and sometimes they charge them hundreds and even thousands of dollars. >> reporter: services the government supplies for free. >> free. one the more unusual organizations, the vets and wine industry. >> when they get out of the military, help well with the

transition, get them their veteran benefits. put them to work in the fields with their hands or in the offices. >> reporter: organizers say they will hold more of these events because the need is so great in the bay area. i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. helen thomas who blazed a trail for women journalism -- women in journalism as a white house correspondent, she died today in washington pat the age of 92. thomas covered ten presidents and was the first woman named white house bureau chief for a wire service. she was a familiar face there in the front row known for her persistent questioning, particularly over the invasion of iraq. she resigned back in 2010 after saying that israeli jews should leave palestine and go home to europe. in a statement, president obama said "what made helen the dean of the white house press corps was not just the links of her tenure, but that our

democracy works." today in aurora, there was a pause and remembrance service for the victims today. ♪. >> 12 people were killed when a gunman opened fire during a movie at a theyer. today, victims and friends and family and first responders gathered to pray. >> it's important to remember that one senseless act does not, cannot, and will not define us as a community. >> the trial for the accused gunman, james holmes, is scheduled to begin in federal budget. sectarian violence continues as car bombs explode today in and around baghdad. at least 46 people died in a coordinated wave of seven car bombs. those detonations came after the breaking of the daily fast

during ramadan. 450 people have died in attacks since ramadan started on july 11th. an aide to mahmoud abbas says there's a written guarantee proposals will be made. that's not been confirmed by either side. palestinians and israelis agreed to meet for peace talks. something they've not done for six years. six flags in dallas has closed. a roller coaster ride is closed as an investigation goes on about the rider. the texas giant is 152 feet up in the air. the victim's family said her seat restrained seemed to go -- seat restraint seemed to go up normally but not when they

in coverage for the overnight hours. right now, we're watching some moisture to the south and also to the southeast. this will be approaching the central parts of the state over the next couple of days. right now some showers and thunderstorms developing out in the yosemite area and to the northern portions of lake tahoe. we have the fog to contend with. it will increase in coverage over the next 6 to 10 hours. temperatures for the 6:00 hour, 80s for fair field and livermore. san jose, 76. downtown san francisco checking in in the lower 60s. for tonight, fog increases. it will be breezy out there. tomorrow a lot of cloud cover clearing back to near the coastline. and then monday and tuesday we'll add some more clouds. it will be humid for those two days. overnight will be in the 50s. santa rosa, 64. san jose, 58. a good bet of coastal drizzle returning. here is the overall weather pattern for tomorrow. high pressure begins to back off a little bit.

as a result, most areas cool off a few degrees. still the warmest locations inward, we'll have the steady onshore breeze. this area here, as the area of high pressure burns off, it will transport some of the moisture close to the bay area. increasing clouds, especially by monday afternoon into monday night and tuesday, this will be the source of the humidity. there's a slight chance of a few showers or thunderstorms approaching the bay area for that monday/tuesday time frame. we'll have to keep an eye on that for -- on the forecast maps. you can see the forecast model for monday morning and for the afternoon hours. high clouds on the increase and then into tuesday morning, a lot of cloud cover out there. that's when we bring in the chance for a light shower or a slight chance of a thunderstorm. oakland, tomorrow 70. upper 80s to lower 90s out to livermore and brentwood. san jose, a forecast high of 81 degrees. san francisco on the cool side, right about 64. look ahead at your five-day forecast -- with your weekend

some children in west oakland today saw their field of dreams come true. [ cheers and applause ] >> this morning officials from tlc for kids sports reopened the renovated baseball field at the playground. the opening caps weeks of construction and cleanup efforts by local volunteers. the field is named for a softball player, cynthia rodriguez who died of leukemia last year at the young age of 14. >> this means everything. it makes me sad. it makes hee happy. all i -- me happy. all i want is for my daughter to be here and play. but she's not. so this is the next best thing.

>> cynthia's teammates embraced after a speech in her memory. her mother said she's glad that the girls have a safe place to play. >> we all are. congratulations. baseball. golf. >> things setting up for the british open. all eyes will be on tiger woods. again trying to break his major tournament victory drought that dates back to 2008. in scotland, the field is dry out. there's one of the hazard as well. mig jim men necessary -- miguel jimenez. he fell six strokes off the lead. hunter mahan that goes from one end of the u.k. to the other. he will be in tomorrow's final group with lee westwood. today it was westwood and woods dueling in the same group. if you followed that today, you got a good show. west wood on the fringe of the par 5 fifth. he will put from there.

that works out pretty well -- pretty well. now, it's tiger from one of those trademark bunkers. this one on the 9th hole. he negotiates it nicely. he then sets himself up for a birdie. at that point, he and westwood shared the lead 2 under par. 17 was the two-stroke lead after tiger bogeyed, westwood made the putt. he's two strokes in front of woods and mahan. west wood is after his first major championship. woods after that elusive 15th. >> i'm looking forward to it. i'm looking forward to the challenge of it. you know, i -- i've been in this position before. hopefully tomorrow i can play well and win the tournament. for me i was trying to grind along and play my own game regardless what lee was doing or anyone else was doing. this golf course is a tough test. i was just trying to execute my
