back to the desk. the captain of a suspicious sailboat is in custody after a bizarre boat chase. we're live in sausalito. >> reporter: this is the bow in question. you can see it behind me it's moored here. it's not easy to see on first glance but if you take a closer look with the help of our zoom lens, you can see the name "fortune." coast guarders say yesterday afternoon, they spotted the sailboat. it appeared not to have any flags or markings indicating the flame or origin -- or -- indicating the name or the orie

origin and. >> we came alongside, the owner did not allow us on board which raised suspicion yet again. >> reporter: the coast guard called for backup and then a low speed chase ensued, two and a half miles west of ocean beach. we're told that's when a coast guard unit tried to board the sailboat. the boarding team members did board anyway with their guns drawn. the captain was taken into custody after a minor scuffle. we've reached out multiple times to the coast guard's public affairs officer this morning to find out more about this couldn'ten, whether he this -- captain whether he will face any charges and whether anything illegal was on board. back to you. 7:03. well, ktvu has learned the name of the man described as a hero because he rescued a complete stranger from a burning house. we have a picture showing how dangerous that situation was. now, the picture shows this was

taken after joseph trapani ran into that burning home and pulled the man to safety. he said he was driving by when he saw all of the flames. coming up at 7:30, ktvu's alex savidge will talk to trapani about how he risked his life for someone he doesn't even know. we're following developing news out of london this morning. the moment has arrived. kate middleton is in the hospital in what's described as early stages of labor. here's a live picture there as london gets very excited for this, the duchess of cambridge and prince william arrived at london's st. mary's hospital early this morning. they actually snuck in the back door. photographers around the front door. this is the same hospital where diana gave birth to prince william and harry. here's more. >> well, obviously, best wishes to them. a very exciting occasion.

issue. janine de la vega joins us now to explain where the city wants to put the bathroom and why critics say it may not solve the problem. >> reporter: well, we're here on front street and so cal, the san lorenzo river is behind me. i can't spell anything. i haven't been able to walk by. i've been warned by the homeless, you have to watch where you step because you may step in human waste. the city has received numerous complaints about people who live near here and from business owners. many homeless people are relieving themselves by urinating and deve kateing -- def kateing along -- defecating along the ribber. as part of -- river. as part of a pilot program, the city will put up a temporary bathroom near the front of -- near front and laurel streets. >> we don't have access to a

bathroom. a lot of the stores won't lept us in. same -- let us us in -- let us in. i guess they are forced to. i think if they were able to put in a few of them, it would make a huge difference. >> reporter: the city did put up porta-potties but they were removed because of misuse and vandalism. the city will provide a more well-lit environment in hopes it will not allow drug use, vandalism and prostitution. you are looking at a live picture. in the last 15 minutes, a bunch of police officers pulled up here and officers have been going down in the river. we're not sure if it's an issue down there. we're trying to find out what's going on. not sure if it is all related. but we'll have answers for you in the next hour.

reporting live from santa cruz, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. some new information about the veteran san francisco firefighter tied to a serious crash last month. he could soon be out of a job. investigators say firefighter michael quinn drove a ladder truck into a motorcyclist while drunk and then left the scene at fifth and howard. the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive. the chronicle reports that joanne heys' wife sent a letter asking that quinn be fired. a tour bus driver accused of drg is due -- of drunk driving is due in court. there were several tourists on board the bus at the time of his arrest. maynard is facing both drunk driving charges and charges of driving with an open container of alcohol. 7:08. jury deliberations continue today in a case that could impact madden nfl games.

closing arguments wrapped up on friday in the lawsuit between robin antonich and electronic arts. robin says he programmed the first madden nfl game and is entitled to millions of dollars in royalties. electronic says his work was dissarded in the 1990s when new programming was developed. if robin wins, it would be a high-profile victory for those behind the games. coming up at 7:25, why concussions among children and teenagers have become doubled in the past decade and what doctors say you parents should know about the problem. >> pretty scary. back to sal looking on traffic. >> we have an unusual problem. northbound 280. remember the mountain lion i told you about. >> yes. >> it didn't make it. it's still on the road. and the chp -- department of

welcome back to "mornings on 2." 7:15 is the time right now. a flash flood watch is in effect from a tropical storm system. it could bring some rain here to the bay area. but people in phoenix, boy, they've seen extensive damage from the heavy downpour. yesterday, emergency crews spent most of the day making water rescues and meteorologists say tropical weather systems from the south, not unusual this time of year. the bay area could see rain today or tomorrow.

there's a major new development in the deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge. the wife of the limo driver involved spoke to the san jose mercury news. she says her husband turned up the music in the limo so his passengers could not hear him arguing with her on the phone. that raises questions about whether he was distracted when the fire began racing through his limo, killing five women. however, the driver's wife disputes the mercury story. when we spoke to her -- when ktvu spoke to her last night. developing news from china. there was a big earthquake, a 6.6. it's killed at least 75 people and injured at least 400. this quake was centered in the gansu province. more than 1200 homes were destroyed. the red cross is sending in relief supplies buts rescue efforts are -- but the rescue efforts are slowed by the mudslides. back in this country, later this week, president obama

flies to illinois. he'll drifer what -- he'll deliver what the white house says will be the first of several economic speeches. the president will speak on wednesday at knox college in illinois. that's where he spoke back when he was a newly-elected senator about his vision for an expanded and stronger middle class. the white house says the president will revisit that theme this week as well as other appearances over the comes weeks. congress is at at standstill on immigration reform. now there's pressure mounting for california lawmakers to make a move. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, the california chamber commerce is behind a new campaign. kyla? >> reporter: pam, cal chamber is pressuring california republican members of congress to get on board with the senate's plan for immigration reform. california is home to about 2.5 million undocumented rorkeers. about half of them -- workers. about half of them have been living in california for ten

years or longer. cal says they need a combination of high skilled and low skilled workers for the economy to take off. dianne feinstein has said without immigration reform, the future of farming in the state is at a risk. and tech companies in the bay area are counting on an immigration overhaul for the high-skilled workers to play a role in the company's success. we'll take a closer look at what this could mean for bay area companies when i see you next. live in washington, d.c., kyla campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. apple confirms a website for the developers has been hacked. an. says developers' name and content information may have been accessed during the breach on thursday. but that customer information was encrypted and not affected. the site has been taken down. san francisco's district attorney says he's pleased with the progress that tech companies, including apple, are making in derming smartphone thefts. that announce -- in determining

smartphone thefts. that announcement comes after the announcement about the secure procedures last week. this will require a apple's i.d. and password to use the phone. about you a half of all robbery -- about half of all robberies in san francisco last year involved a smartphone. i know you love music. the marin county tam jam is coming back because the first festival was so successful. since the eight-hour show on june 22nd, organizers have started to prepare for next year. they say this could become a yearly event and be spread out over two days. the show benefits mount tam, state park. it's held in the mountain theater. this year the sales brought in about $25,000. >> and the mountain -- mountain theeter is a great venue. >> yes. it's cloudy around the bay area. meteorologist steve paulson will be back. also, it's the new gold

more than a hun dreped years ago, miners were searching for gold, silver and copper. now the government is looking for a different kind of buried treasure. they are looking for valuable parts of smart phones, tvs, wind turbines even mri machines. department of energy is hoping those discoveries will help break china's hold on valuable supplies used to make smart phones and other electronics. as you know, same-sex marriages are legal again in california. that's expected to give a big boost to businesses all over california. a new report estimates businesses around the state

could earn $500 million during the next three years because of gay and lesbian marriages. that includes money for wedding ceremonies and receptions and churches, hotels and banquet halls. on top of that, the state could rake in an estimated $40 million in tax money. doctors in the south bay are working to raise awareness about the growing number of sports related injuries in children and teenagers. they are trying to spread the word to parents and coaches about the dangers of untreated concussions. pediatricians say children with head injuries should always be checked out by a drunk driver even if they seem fine. >> what we call a brain injury or concussion is probably not the same as ten years ago. you may have gotten hit and say, i got hit. i got dinged. and they would say to them, shake it off. get back in. >> head injuries are occur in

non-contact sports, even cheerleader. the number of children diagnosed with conkus has doubled -- concussions has doubled. 7:23. pro football is back. training camp for both bay area teams start this week. now, the defending nfc champions begin their quest for another super bowl today. that's when their training camp opens. this follows the 49ers heartbreaking 34-31 loss to the ravens in super bowl xlvii back in february. 49ers' training camp is in santa clara right next to the $1.3 billion stadium that will become their new home in 2014. oakland raiders begin training camp in napa on thursday. there's still a lot of unanswered questions about a troubled team that has not made it to the playoffs in a while.

all right, sal. come ban on back -- come on back. what's happening on the peninsula? >> we have a major problem on highway 101 near the peninsula. this is 101 near willow on the peninsula, right near the dumbarton bridge, two vehicles, an injury crash and oil has been reportedly spilled as a result. either it's oil or fuel. they have to get a sweeper out there and they've issued a sig- alert for highway 101, menlo park, palo alto. there was a mountain lion hit in north hills near magdalena avenue. that lane has been closed. they are waiting for the department of fish and game to get out there and get rid of the mountain lion. the peninsula is a mess. 237 in case you are trying to get to the peninsula. not too bad. milpitas as you drive west. bay bridge toll plaza backed up

for a 25-minute delay. no problems once you make it on the bridge. let's go to steve. well, a lot of low clouds, fog. the higher clouds continue it work their way up there. 50s and 60s. some of these are low, especially areas that have the cloud cover r it's starting to move north -- cloud cover. it's starting to move north. down to the monterey peninsula, so soleda -- soledad, king city. things are getting interesting here. so thick fog, mostly cloudy, cloudy to the south. these are tropical clouds. that means. humidity is much, much higher. could be some showers to the south but i think more likely tonight into tomorrow. 60s, 70s. coast and bay. 80s inland. again, these higher clouds make the challenge very, very difficult here on the forecasted highs. more clouds i think on tuesday.

welcome back. here's a story you will only see on 2. for the first time, we're hearing from a man who rescued a complete stranger from a burning home in hercules. ktvu's alex savidge joins us now with what the man has to say. alex? >> reporter: well, he told me he didn't think, he just reacted. he was driving by here on lupine road on saturday afternoon. he saw this home behind us was on fire. he thought maybe there would be people inside. turns out there was. he went inside and rescued and elderly man sleeping in a back yard. i want to bring in the man many are calling a hero, joe

trapani. do you consider yourself a hero? >> no. i just reacted to the situation. >> reporter: tell me about this. it's hard to imagine you running inside this home. why did you do it? >> i saw the garage was open. i saw a blaze coming out and i figured someone would be inside if the garage is open. so i just reacted and went in. >> take us through exactly what you did. you are driving by. you are with some of your friends. you see this fire and you obviously think, i've got ta get inside. what -- i've gotta get inside. what did you do initially? >> initially we ran, started to knock on the door, bang on it. rang the doorbell. when no one came, i decided to kick the door in. on the second kick, i got it open pretty easily. started running through the house, clearing rooms left to right. kicking each other. the last door i kicked in, there was an elderly man there, grabbed him by his shirt, ran out of the house as far as i could. he looked very scared. didn't know what was going on. didn't know it was a fire. ran out to the front, we took a

spill. my brother picked us both up. i got on my feet and went back in. >> reporter: you went back in the house a second time? >> yes. [laughter] >> reporter: in hindsight do you think that was the smartest thing to do? >> no, probably not. >> reporter: a lot of the personnel and neighbors on the scene, they say if it weren't for you, this gentleman would not be here. do you think that's the case? >> with the smoke and his age, i don't think he would be alive. >> reporter: would you do something like this again? >> it depends. if i react in that way, yes. i would like to say i would. but you would never know. >> reporter: this is joe trapani. he lives in hercules. driving by saturday afternoon. sees a fire at a home, runs inside and rescues an elderly gentleman, possibly saving his

wife according to all of the emergency personnel on the scene. doesn't consider himself a hero but many in the neighborhood do. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> great story. well, a freeway overpass sign in berkeley has now been replaced after it was recently stolen in the area of last week's deadly hit-and-run crash. the sign warns pedestrians and bicyclists to stay off the university avenue overpass above interstate 80. last monday, police found the body of a man who had been hit by a car. investigators believe he was homeless and the search continues for the driver who hit him. later today, the san mateo county coroner is expected to release the name of a freeway good samaritan. the chp says he was killed while trying to help the victims of a suspected drunk driving crash. it happened early yesterday morning on interstate 280 in woodside. investigators say that a passing suv hit him after he got out of his jeep to help two people who were hurt in another crash. chp says the driver who hit the

good samaritan will not face charges. one driver involved in the initial crash was booked on dui charges. 7:33. happening later today, the oakland chapter of the naacp will hold a news conference about the george zimmerman verdict in florida. the news conference set for noon. the chapter president george hollen senior says the naacp will talk about the outrage about the verdict. the oakland chapter will join the national effort for a federal civil rights case against george zimmerman. >> give this community the peace, the fullness -- >> some bay area religious leaders are encouraging everybody to come together after the george zimmerman acquittal. yesterday, members of the bay area jewish community attendeddallen temple baptist church, one of the largest african-american chuferps in oakland. church -- churches in oakland. church leaders say this acquittal has showed a racial

divide in american and they want people to come together and unite. [chanting] >> last night in san jose, things were not as peaceful at this george zimmerman protest. coming up for you at 7:48 how the actions of one protester affected the mood of the march. there's new information involving the deaths of an asiana crash victim on the san francisco runway. sfo had recently bought heat sensing equipment that would have prevented the 16-year-old chinese girl from being hit by a fire truck. it also reports that the infrared technology that could have detected her lying underneath fire-retardant foam was not equipped on the rig that ran over her. the san mateo county coroner has now said the teenager was alive moments before. service has been restored to some people in pinole after a 12-inch water main break.

east bay m.u.d. started to receive calls about the break at about 5:30 last night. crews were immediately sent to he simas avenue and ramona street. east east bay m.u.d. says it took them until about midnight to clear this out. water gushed through the streets. so far the cause of the break is unknown. 7:35. a trial begins today in san jose's measure-b pension reform. san jose voters approved measure-b a little more than a year ago. the san jose police officers' association is just one of several unions suing to block that measure. it requires city workers to pay more money to their pensions. it could be months before a judge issues a ruling. there's a new study out that shows free summer lunches being provided that's not being eaten. it's reported that the number of federally paid for lunches has fallen by about 40%.

that's because many of the schools have cut back on summer school. and schools are saying cafeteria managers say without a curriculum it's hard to get students to come to school even for a free meal. the city college of san francisco is not the only california community college facing the threat of losing accreditation. city college is appealing a decision to revoke its accreditation in july of next year. at least a dozen more community colleges in san francisco have received warnings, they, too, are in danger of losing accreditation. some education experts say one reason california's community colleges are failing to meet standards is because of california's budget crisis in recent years. the school's cut staff and they slashed programs. the observation deck atop mt. diablo is still closed six months after it was supposed to reopen following repairs. the deck closed last september to fix some leaks above the visitors' center.

it was supposed to reopen in january. but according to the contra costa times, the reopening was delayed because winter storms caused more leaks. now state park officials say the observation deck could be ready to open by the fall. sal, are you still falling the major problems on the peninsula? >> it's an overturned -- not cement truck. an overturned pickup truck, two of them near willow road. willow avenue. willow road. southbound 101 as you drive down the peninsula and northbound 101 is affected. so watch for a huge delay on the peninsula especially southbound coming out of redwood city. northbound 101 is also affected. i would still use 208 as an alternative route instead of 101 on the lower peninsula. it's really bad right now. if you take the dumbarton bridge this will affect you because you will be getting off the bridge into a lot of slow traffic. you might want to think about using 237 if you can go out of your way a little bit. also, the morning commute will be backed up at the bay bridge toll plaza.

that's backed up for about a 25- minute delay. not too bad. but there's a delay for sure. if you are driving on 880 in oakland, the traffic looks good. some cloud cover -- and steve, i want to bring you, one of our twitter followers, ruby lopez, we were talking to her. it's gonna be -- is it gonna be sunny later, steve? >> a little bit. maybe north, south. there's a lot of clouds coming in. >> you know i deputized you. >> yes. my tweet. sal is right there's a lot of clouds coming in. the higher clouds are producing some rain down in central california. 50s and 60s. some of these are held up by the cloud cover. some of them just because of the fog and there's very foggy conditions. already moving in, santa clara valley and down towards soledad and king city, things are getting interesting. it's getting close. in the monterey area, maybe the southern santa clara valley.

there's a better opportunity late tonight and tomorrow. pretty good opportunity heading towards south of monterey. slowd/rain forecast. a lot of clouds continue to come in this afternoon. they really thicken up late tonight. coming in livermore overnight into tuesday morning. i know it doesn't look like a lot. today, probably south, looks more likely for clouds. if you are up to the north bay, probably nothing. tomorrow looks like we could get cloud cover and i will say east bay, south bay, today, thick fog, kind of a little mist out there. mostly cloudy, to the south. higher humidity, so really challenging on the high forecast temperatures today. i mean there were 10 degrees differences between the forecast models. that's a huge difference. i kind of split the difference. the cloud cover could make it really tough. a lot of clouds into tuesday. then it's out of here clearing on wednesday. things are kind of quiet here

as we head into the week and the weekend, pam. we're bracing for some courtroom drama as members from two bay area biker groups head to court at the same time. coming up in 15 minutes, why the seating arrangement for the defendant is creating a lot of tension. up next, the excitement is building in london where the duchess of cambridge is in labor. we're live outside of the hospital. we'll have a live report with how we'll learn the news when the baby arrives.

high gear. kate middleton was admitted to the hospital. they are calling it the early stages of labor. our reporter is in london. i know the anticipation is growing. i'm sure people out there are very excited. >> reporter: hey, dave. absolutely. everything is in full swing in the u.k. people are starting to gather outside of buckingham palace. there's normally a crowd anyway. but i think once the news came out about 6:00 local time, that catherine, the dutch esof cambridge had gone into labor and then the anticipation really took off as people are awaiting the birth of this baby. we know she was taken to st. mary's hospital around 6:00 a.m. local accompanied by her husband, prince william, of course. they did -- it was a very

discrete entrance. all supporters are kept out in front of st. mary's hospital waiting for the moment once the baby is born where it will be displayed along with its parents. once the baby is born, the protocol is this -- there will be a representative of buckingham palace who will receive from the doctor who delivered the baby a notice who will physically transport that notice to buckingham palace to deliver it to the queen and then the notice will be placed on the gate of buckingham palace for the world to see. we'll only see is the weight of the baby and the sex of the baby. we don't know the name. that's what everyone is waiting for next. first, when the baby will be born and the second thing what the parents are going to name the child, guys, and i think that will be more anticipated than the actual arrival of this baby, dave. >> all right. we know the baby's in charge.

toyota said there was no defect in her car. the company has blamed such cracks on accelerator that got stuck, floor mats and driver error. time now, 7:47. this morning there's new video of the moment when the driver at the antioch speedway lost control and crashed. witnesses say peter murphy was in second place on saturday when he made contact with another driver, hit a wall and rolled over. it took emergency responders 40 minutes to free the car. he was rushed to the hospital and is listed in serious condition. charges may be filed today in ohio against a registered sex offender relating to three bodies wrapped in trash bags. michael madison has been in custody since friday after ohio police found the first body. over the weekend, law enforcement searched 40

abandoned homes in his east cleveland neighborhood. >> i hope and pray that we do not find more bodies. however we're dealing with a sick individual and we have reason to believe there might be more victims. >> according to authorities, all three of the victims appear to be young, african-american women. investigators say it looks like they were killed during a span of ten days. so far, none of the victims have been identified. evacuation orders are now lifted for people in southern california as crews move ahead of that wildfire that's burning west of palm springs. the fire has burned through more than 27,000 acres. it's destroyed 23 buildings including seven homes. now, people who escape the fire say they are just grateful to be alive. >> we've been saved by the grace of god. and the hard work of the firemen and women, they are amazing. >> with the help of rain and high humidity levels, firefighters have the fire

about halfway contained. the cost of the fire to date is $20 million. firefighters say it was caused by people but they are not saying if it was accidental or on purpose. the u.s. navy says it may try to recover four bombs that were dropped near the great barrier reef off the australian coast. now, last week two marine pilots were forced to abandon the bombs during a training mission after their jets ran low on fuel. two of the bombs were discharmed before they dropped. the other two -- discharged before they were dropped. the other two were not explosive. the navy says the bombs were dropped away from the reef to minimize damage to that protected zone. last night a protest in san jose over the acquittal in the death of tropical was mostly peaceful. as the march was wrapping up, one demonstrator became very angry. [inaudible] >> as the crowd marched through

welcome back. defense lawyers expected to grill michael jackson's mother again today in her wrongful death lawsuit against aeg live. now, the judge in the case adjourned court two hours early on friday after katherine jackson said she needed to rest. her lawyers are arguing that aeg live is responsible for michael jackson's death because the company hired dr. conrad murray. dr. murray has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of michael jackson. two years ago, san jose chapter president, jeffrey pettigrew, known as jethro, was sparked at a casino in sparks,

clouds and fog. a lot of clouds moving up from southern california. that's gonna give us a lot of 60s, 70s and 80s. rain down in the santa clara valley possible tomorrow. here's sal. steve, good morning. we're looking at 80 westbound. you can see traffic is westbound moderately heavy heading out to the bay bridge toll plaza. we're looking at traffic at the toll plaza improving. back to the desk. breaking news in santa cruz. police have found a body near the san lorenzo river. ktvu's janine de la vega is there. you were there when the activity began. what are they saying about the investigation, janine? >> reporter: well, they are being quiet and giving some limited information. i'm at so cal and river street. police have blocked off this road right here so people cannot make a right-hand turn so they can conduct their investigation. they've roped off an area that's down towards the san lorenzo river. the coroner has been called. let's go to video where you can see some more action.

police were called here at about 6:45. again officers are being tight- lipped. but a detective did confirm that a body was discovered in the brush. it's unknown if the person died of natural causes or if this is a homicide. this whole area is frequented by homeless people. there are encampments down there. we did hear a lot of buzz from homeless people. there were several people distraught, claiming they knew the man who died. there was arguing heard. police are still trying to sort this out. at this point, officers are being cautious. that's why they've roped off this area as a crime scene so they can conduct their investigation. we're trying to find out more information. if we do hear anything more, we will bring that back to you. reporting live from santa cruz, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. it started as a routine coast guard check near the golden gate bridge but what happened next was anything but

routine. we're live in sausalito, taking a look at the boat at the center of a very strange case. >> reporter: good morning. we've just confirmed that the captain arrested is named john mccormick. this is the boat in question. you can see it behind me. so far we've only seen a few members of the coast guard walk by and look at the boat. it's not easy to see from the distance. if you take a close look as we zoom in, you can see the name "fortune." the coast guard says they spotted the sailboat. it appeared not to have any flags or markings indicating its name or origin. and then they say mccormick refused them to aboard, cut his line. and we've just learned why the man refused them to board. >> certain individuals had been making false distress call.

i can't express how severe it is on our side of things, we march out crews and waste out the dollars looking for distress that's not actually happening. crews are getting diverted when they could be doing other things. >> reporter: while this whole situation was underway, the coast guard called for backup and then sailed the boat to a point about two and a half miles from ocean beach. that's when the coast guard unit tried to board. the board teams were told no. they did board with their guns out. we've learned that mccormick is being charged with making distressed calls that are false as well as assault on a federal officer. we're told that both are very severe federal crimes. we're in sausalito, back to you. we have new information about the veteran san francisco firefighter tied to a serious

crash last month. he could soon be out of a job. investigators say firefighter michael quinn drove a ladder truck into a motorcyclist while drunk and then left the scene at fifth and howard. the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries but this expected to survive. the chronicle reports that joe an hayes' wife sent a letter to the fire commission asking that quinn be fired. a tour bus driver from san bruno accused of drunk driving is due in court at 9:00 this morning. san francisco police arrested leonard maynard earlier near stockton and post. now, there were several tourists on board the bus. he faces drunk driving and charges of driving with an open container of alcohol. san francisco police are searching for two suspects in a violent, early-morning home invasion robbery in the bayview district. police say a man was stabbed inside a home on palou avenue

that's good news for the commute. we might see this improve before 9:00. we're looking at peninsula. we had the crashes on 101 northbound and southbound at willow avenue. watch for slow traffic in the area. there was an overturned -- a couple of overturned vehicles. 101 is a mess coming out of san mateo. northbound 101 is slow from 237. if you want to use 237 instead of the dumbarton bridge, it's not all that bad. there's a slowing in milpitas. i would not recommend using the dumbarton bridge, will be getting off the bridge and driving into slow traffic. we have some filtered sunshine for some. mostly cloudy for others. some low clouds, high and mid- level clouds which are continuing to move in here. they continue to filter in. the rain is being held down in southern california. actually central california. you can get a good look at it there. coming up 101 bradley, the lake, just south of king city. it looks like it's taking the

turn there. so some monty array -- monterey areas. there's plenty out there rotating back in the east bay or south bay. tonight, tomorrow we could get close. 60s for some. very kind of muggy, humid conditions with the addition of the tropical clouds coming in unless you have the fog, then it's stuck in the 50s and then there's a westerly breeze. a lot of tropical clouds maybe tuesday night into wednesday morning. you can see it's up departing southern california wrapping back in. it looks like rain is stopped in santa barbara and then south of monterey towards big sur. these clouds will move their way in. tonight, tomorrow could be introduced. mostly cloudy to the south. santa clara valley. to the north, you can find wide variety of temperatures here. again, the cloud cover can make it a little difficult on some of these high temperatures. not so much for the santa clara valley, i think they are held

you've been hearing steve say the bay area may get thunderstorms by tomorrow. the same weather system that brought bad thunderstorms to las vegas and arizona over the weekend it's pushing towards california. thousands of people lost power over the weekend, trees were knocked down. parts of the las vegas strip were flooded. meantime, water levels in folsom lake in the american river hit a five-year low. by december, officials are estimating folsom lake will be one-fourth of the total capacity. it's dropping 9 inches every

day. boat owners at folsom lake marina will need to vacant their berths by august 3rd. a smaller lake means less water to maintain. by october, the flows will drop to one-third of where it's at today. a major new development in the deadly limousine fire that happened on the san mateo bridge when five women were killed. the wife of the limo driver involved spoke to the san jose mercury news and said her husband turned upped the music so the passengers couldn't hear her arguing with her on the phone which raises questions about whether he was distracted. however, the driver's wife is disputing the mercury story, at least she did, when cute spoke to her last night -- when ktvu spoke to her last night. a big earthquake, a magnitude 6.6 has killed at least 75 people and injured 400

others, centered in the gansu province in china. more than 1200 homes were destroyed. the red cross is sending in supplies. rescue efforts are slow because of a mudslide over a main road. several yoofer shocks have been reported. this morning is in rio. this will include a public mass on the beach. well, 30,000 troops and police officers have been deployed to rio for the pope's visit. surveillance cameras have installed throughout the city to help the military track any

potential threats but the pope won't be traveling in the pope mobile, he plans to ride in an open top jeep in order to have direct contact with the people. the california chamber of commerce measuring lawmakers move ahead with immigration reform. as kyla campbell reports from our washington, d.c. newsroom, cal chamber has an emotional campaign to prod house republicans into action. >> reporter: the chamber started by sending a letter to congress saying the current system is broken and it doesn't immediate -- meet needs. without immigration reform, california will continue to use talented people, it's reported. student who attend school here often take their talents back to their country. a senate plan would include a

females. that compares to 59 democratic congresswomen in the house. this week, the battlele over the city of detroit declaring bankruptcy will head to federal court. soon after the filing was announced on thursday, retired city workers asked the court to freeze the bankruptcy process. city and state officials say they need to reduce pension and health benefits of current city workers as well as retirees in order to reduce detroit's deficit. there could be more pain at the pump. in the past week, the national price for gas is up 12 cents a gallon. analysts say that's because of increased demand during the summer months, trouble in egypt and production problems. on friday, the national average for gasoline was $3.67, up 23 cents from this time last year. researchers at the university of nevada, las vegas looked at 25 different bottles some were imported. four of the bottles exceeded the

jury deliberations continue today in a case involving madden nfl games. close, arguments wrapped -- closing arguments wrapped up in a lawsuit between anotnich. he says he programmed the first nfl game and is entitled to millions of dollars in royalty. electronic art says his work was discarded in the 1990s when new programming was developed. if antonich wins, analysts say it would be a high-profile victory for technicians behind the video game. doctors in the south bay are trying to raise awareness about the growing increase in the danger of head injuries. pediatricians say children with head injuries should always be checked out by a doctor even if they seem to be fine. >> what we're trying to prevent is an athlete who has had a concussion from sustaining another one because that might lead to worsening of symptoms,

prolonging the recovery and also to help prevent we call a second impact syndrome. pediatricians warn head injuries can happen in noncontact sports, even cheerleading. the number of children diagnosed has doubled in the past ten years. but doctors say that may be cause of a greater publicawareness. contra costa little legal softball team is heading to the western regionals. the team from antioch won the northern california championship on friday with a 12-10 win over a san jose team. now the team is trying to raise money to send the 13 girls and three coaches to montana for the regionals. the president says so far the team has raised $11,000 but wants to hit the $20,000 mark to fly out by thursday. i think a lot of fans and sports' enthusiasts will get in on that. >> i think so. >> maybe.

let's take a look at what we have on 80 westbound. it looks pretty good. it's not as bad as it would be this morning. it's a little lighter than usual. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza, you will see a backup here that's only backed up to the middle of that parking lot. so we don't have anything more than that. it has improved since 7:30 when it was backed up beyond that. that's about a ten-minute delay being a little conservative and maybe between five and ten minutes here before you make it on the bridge. also on the peninsula, we've had our problems. as you know, 101 is just a big mess. i'm talking huge mess on 101 northbound from mountain view up to pal lee alto -- palo ail told. southbound 101 from san mateo this is because of the earlier accident on willow -- willow road, use 280 instead. it's open and clear, especially in the southbound direction getting into the valley. i would not use 101 right now. it's a mess. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. a lot of high and mid-level

only on 2, we're hearing from a man who rescued a man from a burning home. for the first time, the man tell us why he risked his own life. alex savidge has more. tell us more about what he had to say, alex. >> reporter: this was the scenario over the weekend. an elderly man inside this home sleeping when the place caught fire. a neighbor just happened to be driving by right at that moment. this man tells me without hesitation, he saw the fire, ran up and actually kicked in the front doir, took him a couple of tries, he told me. joe trapani is the man's name. he told me without hesitation he went inside this place to save a stranger's life. >> firefighters told me he would have died if i didn't get him all of the bystanders were

hugging me, clapping. i had a woman invite me into her hours, gave water -- gave me water. >> reporter: many in the neighborhood calling him a hero. this is the photo that shows him after the rescue. the fire broke out on saturday afternoon on this home on lupine. trapani didn't stop to think about what he was doing. he went inside the place and raced from room to room and found this man sleeping in a back room unaware of the fire. he helped him outside before the first firefighters got here. now, trapani told me he went back inside the home a second time just to be sure there was no one else who needed help. looking back on things, trapani admits it was a dangerous decision on his part but knew he had to help. >> it was just a reaction to do something or not. it's a good feeling. but a lot of people do this thing every day. firefighters do it every day. police do it every day. i don't think i'm a hero.

>> reporter: now, trapani is a physical therapist. he told me he did spend about a year working as an emt so he does have some experience with this kind of thing. he told me the elderly man he rescued over the weekend, didn't speak much english but the man gave him a handshake and a nod that really showed how grateful he was. firefighters believe this fire started in the engine of a car parked in the garage of this home. obviously it quickly spread to the rest of the house. it did about $100,000 in damage. in the end, no one was hurt all thanks to this quick-thinking neighbor who happened to be driving by this home at the right time. we're live in hercules, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. new this morning, tensions high between b.a.r.t. management and the unions, less than two weeks before the next strike deadline. later on today, b.a.r.t. union leaders will release a report that they say com-- koferm piled on the

management's lead negotiator. they say the report documents a history of illegal behavior. unions are criticizing his vacation days during these latest contract talks. b.a.r.t. workers may possibly walk off the job again if the two sides can't reach a deal by august 4th. later today, the san mateo county coroner is expected to release the name of a good samaritan who lost his life. the chp said he was killed while trying to help the victims of a suspected drunk driving crash. it happened early yesterday morning on interstate 280 in woodside. investigators say a passing suv hit him after he got out of his jeep to help two people who were hurt. chp says the driver who hit the good samaritan will not face any charges. one driver involved in the initial crash was boorked on dii -- boorked on dui charges -- booked on dui charges. the city is considering a

public restroom at laurel street. this comes safer complaints of public -- after complaints of public urination. >> i think it would be helpful. i think it couldn't hurt. >> bathrooms were installed in the downtown area several years ago but were removed because of vandalism and misuse. happening today, the oakland chapter of the naacp will hold a news conference about the george zimmerman verdict in florida and the shooting death of trayvon martin. the news conference is scheduled for noontime. the chapter president, george hollen senior, says the naacp will -- >> give this community -- [inaudible] >> bay area religious leaders

are encouraging everyone to come together after the zimmerman acquittal. yesterday, members of the bay area jewish community went toalen temple baptist church, one of the largest african- american churches in oakland. church leaders say george zimmerman's acquittal has shown a raval divide -- racial divide in california. so they want people to unite. >> last night in san jose, things were not as peaceful as this george zimmerman protest. coming up for you at 8:50 how the actions of one of the protesters affected the entire mood of the march. there's new information involving the death of an asiana airlines crash victim. today's chronicle reports sfo had recently bought heat sensing equipment that would have prevented the 16-year-old qirl from -- 16-year-old girl from being hit by a fire rig. it also reports the infrared technology that sco have detected her lying underneath fire retardant foam was not on

stall. hopefully, no big problems right now. you know, nothing major except for 101. we have an been talking about that all -- we've been talking about that all morning. on willow avenue. we had the truck accident. two vehicles ended up being overturned. they are still waiting for one of the vehicles to be put up on a tow truck. the latest, they should be opening it close to 9:00 but the damage is done. 101 is just a huge mess. use 208 as an alternate route. 101 through redwood city, palo alto and mountain view, northbound and southbound very slow. let's take a look at 80 westbound. that traffic is moderately heavy coming out to a relatively uncrowded bay bridge toll plaza. that's backed up for a short way here. maybe a five-minute delay before you make it on the -- osh the bridge -- on the brick. let's go to steve. some clouds and sun. most of the clouds are down to the east. but they will continue to

rotate in. i think we'll go from sunny for tom to mostly cloudy -- for some to mostly cloudy. there's a dividing line between some clouds, no clouds at all. a lot of these clouds are moving up from southern california. there's been rain in central california starting to move north. continues to be north of king city. inching closer. more likely i think tonight into tomorrow. but it's getting closer. a lot of these higher clouds -- this has a long way to go. but it's beginning to inch closer towards our area. i would not be surprised to see us go from sunny for some to cloudy. but santa clara valley seems to be the worst. humidity factor goes up. 50s and 60s. some of the temperatures along with a robust westerly breeze. 21 travis. west at concord.

we add the higher clouds in the mix, you might have higher humidity. 60s, 70s for the intire -- interior. santa barbara toads san luis -- towards san luis obispo. some might come back in later on. fog, sun, clouds. thick fog. misty conditions. mostly cloudy to the south. mostly sunny to the north. still some 90s up to ukiah and clearlake. 90 vacaville. upper 80s, and some mid-80s get closer to the bay. 60s, too much of a west wind and fog. temperatures held down morgan hill and gilroy due to the higher deck. 70s mainly on the peninsula. upper 60s around brisbane, san bruno. a lot of clouds on tuesday and wednesday. i think the best opportunity would be on tuesday. after that, it looks clear and then warmer temperatures for the weekend. we're continuing the royle baby watch this morning. kate middleton is in the hospital this morning where she

reportedly is in labor. our reporter, vladimir, is in london. we've been checking in with you since 4:30 this morning our time. are the crowds growing at the hospital and outside of buckingham palace? >> reporter: crowds are growing outside of buckingham palace. i haven't been to st. mary's hospital. i doubt that anybody who wanted to get past this huge area of reporters and cameramen and producers and crew that have congregated would be able to get through there. but if they do, more power to them. certainly, people are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the royal baby. i think it's not just here but you see it all across the world. it's the number one topic trending on twitter. you can tell even in the united states. there's an enormous amount of anticipation for the arrival of the baby. we heard that catherine, the

duchess of cambridge, went into labor almost ten hours ago. and right now, no word from the palace. but all we were told is things are progressing normal. >> we were talking about names earlier with you. i'm wondering if possibly maybe diana's name might be mentioned or one of her names, she has a few names in her title. if that might be brought up. >> reporter: well, ush know, theod -- well, you know the oddsmakers do not have diana as one of the possible names. the names are in the run -- that are running, include alexandra, victoria after the great queen who gave us the victorian age, grace has been a name that's been sort of bantered about, charlotte. if it's a boy, the names that people seem to think might be a possible name for a future king include james, there were two kings of england named james,

bridge. the coast guard first spotted that 30-foot sailboat. it had no flags or markings. it was near sausalito yesterday afternoon. the coast guard did arrest the captain when he refused to let anyone get on his boat. we're still fouling breaking news out of santa cruz. police have found a body near the san lorenzo river. janine de la vega is out there with the very latest. what have you heard so far? >> reporter: the coroner arrived. they are gonna examine the body. there's a lot of police activity. they've opened off the area near socal street. around 6:35 police were called here and they discovered a body in the brush laying near the river. officers are staying tight- lipped but homeless people say the person is a man.

homeless frequent here because of drug use and other crimes that happen here. it's unknown at this point, if the person died of natural causes or if there was any foul play involved. at this point, detectives are investigating and they are just treating this as a possible scream scene so they want to be cautious at this point. i can tell you, we were here earlier on a different story when we saw all of the police cars arriving. it was very quiet out here. we didn't see paramedics or firefighters arrive to give any sort of medical aid. so we can tell that at least this person was already deceased when police got here and no medical aid was ever administered. if we learn anything new, we'll bring it to you. reporting live from santa cruz, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. jury selection begins today in the wrongful death lawsuit against toyota by the family of a southern california woman killed when her camry suddenly accelerated to speeds up to 100 miles per hour.

noriko uno's husband and son filed the lawsuit. three years ago, uno was unable to slow down her toyota camry despite stepping on the brake pedal and pulling the emergency brake. she was killed when she swerved to avoid other cars and hit a told phone pole and tree. her case is being closely watched because it's the first wrongful death lawsuit against toyota to go to a state court. there are more than 80 similar cases filed in other state courts. toyota has said there was no defect in her car. the company has blamed such crashes on accelerators that got stuck, floor mats that trapped the gas pedal and driver error. a boy scout leader was killed and five scouts were hurt in a chain reaction crash in mendocino county. officials say the troop from the lake tahoe area was headed to camp yesterday morning when their van was hit on highway 20 near potter valley in a five- car pileup. the scout leader was killed

instantly. his 14-year-old son is one of the three scouts with major injuries. two other scouts have minor to moderate injuries. 8:49. new developments in the case of three bodies found in cleveland ohio wrapped in trash bags. in the past 15 minutes we found out that charges of aggravated murder will be filed against michael madison, an ohio sex offender. on friday, he was arrested. over the weekend, police searched about 40 abandoned homes in his neighborhood in east cleveland. yesterday authorities called off the search for more bodies. investigators say all three of the victims appear to be young, african-american women. well, this week, the german roller coastermaker will be sending inspectors to a texas amusement park. they will be looking for answers in a deadly accident at the six flags over texas amusement park in arlington, texas, on friday. witnesses say a woman who fell to her death had been expressing concern about the safety of the roller coaster,

the safety bar, as the ride was just starting. people in southern california are being allowed to go back home after being evacuated from a wildfire. the fire burning west of palm springs has destroyed more than 27,000 acres. it also burned through 23 buildings including seven homes. now, they've had some rain and high humidity levels. that's helped the firefighters and now the fire is halfway contained. firefighters say that brush fire was caused by people but they are not saying if it was an accident or if it happened on purpose. last night, the protest in oakland was mostly peaceful over the acquittal of george zimmerman. as the march wrapped up, one protester became very angry. one woman decided to block a light rail train passing through. then dozens of other people
