flying in from nashville. reporter poppy harlow joins us now from new york to show us what happened after the jet's landing gear collapsed. good morning! >> reporter: good morning to you, pam. it was a scary and very sudden landing for southwest flight 345 coming here to new york la guardia from nashville last night and this comes just weeks after asiana flight 214 crash landed in san francisco. you can see sparks flying at southwest airlines flight 345 out of nashville lands hard on its nose. the nose wheel collapsed, and the aircraft skidded down the runway on its nose and veered off and came to rest in a grassy area. >> reporter: 150 people evacuated on merge slides. >> i thought it was the job of the wild but i realize what happened until i left the plane. >> it was like getting smashed

in a car wreck. >> chaotic. flight attendants crying. >> reporter: these photos from cnn show the scene inside the airport lounge where passengers waited hours for luggage from the stranded plane. according to the f.a.a. the plane came safely to a stop at the edge of the runway. no injuries were immediately reported to air traffic control. the f.a.a. is investigating. ten nonlife-threatening injuries were later reported but the scare come on the heal office the crash landing of asiana flight 214 that left two dead at san francisco international airport earlier this month. now images of that plane's interior show charred seats, an eerie reminder of what can happen. the incoming flights were closed at la guardia for over an hour, a ripple affect of flight delays the rest of the night. people this morning still dealing with flight delays because of what happened. southwest is cooperating with local authorities. the airline says the ntsb has

been notified. i have an update for you from the ntsb. they are on the ground assessing monday's incident to determine whether or not to launch an investigation. also the ntsb says the data recorders from that southwest flight have been sent to their labs in washington for a readout. pam? >> thank you for that live record from la guardia. we will be checking in on that throughout the morning. back at home a lot of bart riders are getting nervous with the next strike deadline just 12 days away. bart management and the labor union appear to be far apart with all the major issues in this bitter labor dispute. we have more with tara moriarty live oakland to tell us what is happening in the contract talks right now. tara? >> reporter: you know, bart passengers we have been speaking to this morning are becoming immune to the bickering going on on both sides here. the good news is the two sides are still talking. the bad new, of course, there is mud slinging going on away

from the table. bart's largest union, bart's chief negotiator is a union buster who has a history of provoking strikes. but hawk's reputation was defended and said with a 10 person bargaining team they should be able to ink out a deal in 12 days. commuters are bracing for another strike. >> i feel sorry for either one. they have it going on either way. they have to give. look at the economy. it is ridiculous what they are fighting on. people talking about not meeting on both sides is ridiculous. >> reporter: later this afternoon at the macarthur bart station commuters can get a look at the next generation of bart car, something bart officials can say will be put on hold in something doesn't go well. $69million in new revenue has gone to employee health care and pension benefits. both sides have until august 4th to strike a deal. if not, another strike could happen. live from oakland, i am tara

moriarty, ktvu fox 2 news. we have new information this morning about a deadly collision between a bicyclist and pedestrian in san francisco. ktvu news learned the bicyclist, christopher bucari agreed to plead guilty. a guilty plea for vehicular manslaughter by someone riding a bike is the first of its kind in the country. he hit and killed 71-year-old su wee in march of 2012. one source tells us the felony charge could be reduced to a misdemeanors with bucari sentenced to three years probation and 1,000 hours of community service. time now is 6:06. today the santa cruz city council meets behind closed- doors, reconsidering a controversial claim. they will take a second look at paying for the property damage stemming from a surge for a heavily armed man who had just killed two police officers. the owners of the doyle street apartment building filed acclaim against the city after bullets from the shootout

damaged their building. earlier the city council rejected the claim of almost $5,000. a 16-year-old boy was arrested by morgan hill police. he is accused of raping and intoxicated 40-year-old woman friday night. police say hours before the attack a cab driver needed help getting the woman into her house. he asked for help from the boy and his mother who happened to be passing by. police believe the boy went back to that house later to attack the woman. then went back again later with two friend to burglarize the home. police say the victim's stolen items were found in the teenaged boys home. facebook staff and executives are mourning the death of long time executive chef joseph disimone. he was involved in a motorcycle accident and died as a result. so far there are no further details about the crash. he joined facebook in 2008 after working at google. facebook ceo mark zuckerberg says else a legend and

institution. on his personal facebook page he writes... s he was 44 years old. san mateyo trustees will immediate today to look at whether to file a lawsuit of ap test results. those of as many as 224 mill students have been thrown out by the college board because proper seating procedure were not followed when the tests were taken back in may. the college board says the seating arrangements could have given the students an unfair advantage, although there have been no reports of cheating. ktvu brian flores is checking into it and will have a report on the special meeting at 6:45. right now at 6:08 it is

probably time to check in on the toll plaza? >> you are right, pam. it is time to look at that at the toll plaza. you can see traffic is busy, backed out to the 880 overcrossing, a 10 to 15 minute delay. no problems getting into san francisco. traffic does look good on the bridge. also the morning commute is moving along nicely on the peninsula. we had that earlier road work near millbury. that is gone and the slow traffic behind it disappeared. no major problems. westbound 580 at the altamonte pass with a little slow traffic because of an earlier crash. let's go to the south bay at 280 northbound. that traffic is light from downtown san jose to the valley. 6:09. steve? sal, we have a double header today. >> double header? >> two games for the price of one. i think things will be improving as we head to the afternoon and evening hours. we will go partly cloudy and even better conditions for

causing lot of chaos during the pope's visit to brazil. the demonstrators are angry about the price tag of the pope's trip. they collided with police in rio de janeiro last night. at least four of the protestors were hurt and several arrests were made by police. the violence broke out one hour after the pope attended an official welcoming ceremony at a government palace in rio de janeiro. in the next half hour the house of representatives will start debating on thousand fund the defense department, totalling $600 billion. we have more from the washington, d.c. newsroom. there is a fight brewing over which programs should get funding. kyla? >> reporter: pam, there are members in both parts that doesn't want to give the nsa money to fund the surveillance program. there are tea party republicans

and liberal democrats on the same side trying to limit funding and operations for the nsa. they are picking amendment to the defense spending bill, one allowing the nsa to collect phone records only if the person is the subject of an investigation. that amendment and other will be voted on after the house starts going over the sweeping spending plan this morning. lawmakers from both parties are trying to keep the president obama administration from arming syrian rebels without congressional approval but they say they will not cut funding to program that is fight terrorism. we will be listening live as the house gets back to capitol hill in 45 minutes and have the latest developments for you in the next half hour. time now 6:16. new school bus safety rules may be recommended today by federal investigators. the recommendations would come into the investigation into this deadly crash in chesterfield, new jersey. the ntsb is meeting there to consider the probable cause with the collision of a dump

truck that sent the bus crashing into a pole. an 11-year-old girl was killed in the crash and five other students were seriously hurt. well, the way students pay for college has changed since the recession began. the annual survey by sally may find that is grants and scholarships are now the number one way to pay for college, taking parents out of the top spot. this covers 30% of the college costs. the parents' incomes now come in number two, covering 27% of the bill and student borrowing covers 18%. loan expert with sally may say parents still want to help pay for the college costs but their incomes are not keeping up. researchers at uc davis say a large pool of sharks have

. welcome back. city council is talking about what to do with the bottle rock festival. last year it attracted over 100,000 people. the people living near were upset. there is no bottle rock festival plan for the next year but organizers want to be ready if there is. and a grocery chain has many customers on surprise. it the current on payments but there are potential problem with wells fargo, it he is biggest secured lender. customers are hoping it will be worked out because the pueblo stores are considered special in the community. >> this is like abicon for our local hispanic community. >> managers admit it could take six months before the uncertainty of its future is resolved. now, here is more details on the pueblo chain.

landing problem with a southwest jet coming in from nashville. this was late yesterday afternoon. the front landing gear collapsed sending the boeing 737 skidding along the tarmac. six passengers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. ten others were treated at the scene. the ntsb is looking at mechanical failure of the 14- year-old jet as the possible cause of the crash. this morning the f.a.a. is investigating the cause of a small plane crash in palo alto that killed the pilot of a single engine plane. it went down in a wooded area east of the palo alto area. witnesses say the plane lost altitude after taking off, hit large pine trees and flipped over. the pilot, steven lefton of palo alto was killed and a nurse walking her dog in the area came to the aide of his

wife who had minor injuries. and bart management and the labor unions seem to be far apart in major issues in this bitter labor dispute. ktvu tara moriarty is joining us live in oakland with some of what are calling a glimmer of hope in this gloomy situation. tara? >> reporter: yes. both sides are still trying to work it out. at least no one has walked away from the table. the bart largest union chief negotiator is a union buster who has a historical of stalling strikes. but with a ten person negotiating team they should be able to hammer out a deal in the next 12 days. >> people use strikes and other things as a method as a way to approach it, but on the other side everybody should come to

happening today the owner of a 70-foot schooner that sank near richmond will try to raise the boat today. we have alex savage in richmond with more on the delicate operation. >> reporter: yes. the schooner is under 30 feet of water right now off the coast of point richmond here, off the break water, in fact, stuck in several feet of mud. the owners of the boat have an ambitious plan to lift it out of the water and get it back to shore. they will put the plan into place later on this morning. today crews will be using a crane to lift the boat out of the mud and tow it in. divers finished patching up the holes on the boat yesterday to get it ready. it ran aground on the 4th of july near the break water here. the coastguard had to rescue the 19 passengers on board and ordered the owners of the boat to raise the 750-foot sailboat out of the water.

the scooter was built by haden and fern brown who live here in richmond. their boat is well known here in the sailing community. they sail it in various festivals and use the boat for charity events, as well. the couple has been raising money to pay for the repairs and obviously the complicated recovery effort that has to happen here. they expect that will get under way later on this morning, some time after 8:00. we will be here to bring it to you. for now live in morning in point richmond, alex savage, station stakes. san mateo school trustees are scheduled to meet today to discuss whether to take a league action against the college board. ktvu brian flores is at mills high school to explain why parents and students are so upset about the college board's decision to require student to retake ap tests. brian? >> reporter: good morning, pam. ap classes, advanced placement classes, are meant to give high school students a leg up

on college classes, a leg up on history classes and what not. many are wondering how they can keep the test results even though the college board says they can't. 224 students are affected by this. what the ets or educational testing service found, there were seating irregularities of where the student were seated at the time of testing. this morning it is not clear of what the irregularities were and no clear indications of cheating. the guidelines for seating and testing protocols are there to prevent things like cheating but cheating is something that many parents and students say did not happen with the testing in may. but now these families may be facing a huge financial burden to retake the test again or delay plans of attending college. some students have created their own websites. one is called wh

and his wife ocould not be happier after the birth of their son. she gave birth to an 8-pound 6- ounce baby boy yesterday afternoon. both mom and baby are doing fine palace officials say. we are not sure when everybody around the world will get a glimpse of the new prince and keeping with tradition, the name of the baby boy has not yet been released. president obama writes in part... and a british bar in san jose is celebrating the royal birth with a baby shower this weekend. the manager of britain ya arms says they will have cake and champagne at the celebration. when they set a time and date will it be posted on the

bicyclist that collided and killed a pedestrian in san francisco in march of 2012 agreed to plead guilty to vehicular manslaughter. the guilty plea by a bicyclist for vehicular manslaughter is the first of its kind in the nation. the victim, a 71-year-old man. later today the santa cruz city council meets behind closed-doors to consider a controversial claim, a property damage claim stemming from a manhunt from a heavily armed man that killed two police officers. man's best friend is topping the agenda at tonight's sunny veil county meeting. we have more where people say the 30,000 dogs there in the city need more parks all to themselves. jeanine? >> reporter: yes, that is right. this is the las palmas dog park. it is the only dog park in the city.

it is not opened yet. it doesn't open until 8:00 a.m. city officials say there are 30,000 dogs that live here and later today there will be a meeting on whether to add more. late last month the city asked residents what kind of dog park they would like to see and if it should be created in one of the existing parks. sunny vail is looking at whether there should be amenities, designated times and off leash areas.

one complaint i have seen online is that the park here is all dirt. they want to see more grass and oh, my god,s where their dogs can play and get exercise. if you want to attend the meeting, it is happening tonight at the city council meeting. reporting live from sunnyvale. a new bikini bar is opening in downtown san jose and some neighbors are not happy about it. the gold's club will be opening for business once it obtains permits because it meets zoning requirements but some people that live in the area are worried that the new club on south market and share street will lead to an increase in -- st. clair street could lead to an increase in crime. staffers are hoping to reopen a restaurant that celebrates an oakland chef later this week following a suspicious fire. it happened earlier saturday morning at hawker fair on west

and 23rd. the oakland's first chef to earn a michelin star says surveillance video shows two men setting a fire at a dumpster next to the restaurant that wiped out the power to both buildings. the images were handed over to the police. and san antonio degree police say technologiality a car shop helps them cash police. the owner of the maaco shop was able to catch it all by cell phone, alert bid his alarm company. he watched the burglars walking around the business using an app linked to security cameras inside and outside the building. police were called and they made the arrest as the man was still inside. california attorney general pamela harris is calling on the supreme court to reject the latest attempt to stop same-sex marriages. harris performed the first same- sex wedding in san francisco

welcome back to ktvu morning news. taking a look at the dow. up 15,590, the nasdaq and s&p 500 also doing well. mostly rising on moves that china is making to avoid a slowing economy there. earnings reports are mixed, but we will keep an eye on the business news this morning. >> thank you. time now 6:55. southern california homes are being threatened by a mud slide now days after they escaped a wildfire threat. the fire that burned 43 square miles west of palm springs is now 85% contained. yesterday evacuees were told they can go back home but now there is a voluntary evacuation order in affect for 20 houses in that area. firefighters say all the rain that helped put out the fire

may now trigger mud slides. we now have new pictures from inside the plane that crashed at sfo killing three people. the photos posted online show the extensive damage inside the plane. you can see the cabin completely burned out and there is the image of the hole at the back of the plane where the tail fell off. the cause of the crash still under investigation. the ntsb says it typically takes 12 to 18 months to come please the final report. the san francisco fire department says it is still trying to determine which fire truck ran over the passenger following the crash. the san francisco chronicle reports that truck 37 hit the teenager but that has not been confirmed. last week the coroner says the girl survived the crash but was then killed by a responding fire truck. time now is 6:56. a tour insist the bay area almost lost her -- tourist in the bay area almost lost her nose while riding in the san francisco tour bus is recovering this morning.

the double decker bus hit a hanging low wire friday. the wire snapped down on the passengers, injuring the 67- year-old woman and four other passengers. the bus was taking a detour on 12th avenue in the richmont district at the time. police say the buses can go that way when there is no much traffic on park practice sid yan. it is not sure who is response for the low hanging wire. major league baseball suspended baseball superstar ryan braun for the rest of is season. it is said he violated drug policy violations. he is now the first big league baseball player tied to that clinic to get a suspension. and we are getting closer to 7:00. let's go back over to sal for a check on traffic. good morning. now traffic is moving along relatively well along the bay area. at the tole plaza it is backed
