good morning. dramatic new video of a fiery landing at la guardia's airport. the key piece of equipment that investigators are looking at this morning. that's coming up in a live report from new york. here at home, the countdown to another possible b.a.r.t. strike. what the two sides are doing just 12 days away before the deadline. a different twist in the weather. we have a lot of tropical clouds. maybe light rain. we have a few reports.

will this continue? raising a sunken sailboat up out of the water in richmond. we'll tell you about the complicated -- complicated recovery. good morning. it's tuesday, july 23rd. i'm dave clark. >> i'm pam cook. this is "mornings on 2." not to confuse people. >> it's pam cook. will there be some rain? >> yeah, we had some up the north, especially up the coast. there's been reports of some sprinkles. a lot of cloud cover over us. that's for sure. occasionally we might get some rain. 60s, 70s and 80s. good morning traffic on the

san mateo bridge. a little foggy there. northbound 101 looks good. back to the desk. new this morning, all of the runways at la guardia airport in new york city, they are hope. this is following a very serious accident involving a southwest airlines jet flying in from nashville. poppy harlem is in new york to show us what happened after the landing gear collapsed. poppy? >> reporter: well, it was shocking. it was frightening this landing last night at la guardia airport. southwest airlines 345, the nose sliding along the runway after it landed. what makes it scarier, this comes a few weeks after that asiana flight crash-landing in san francisco. you can see sparks flying as

the flight lands hard on its nose. >> the nose wheel collapsed. the aircraft skidded down the runway on the nose and geared off and came to rest in a grass area. >> reporter: 150 people on board vrblthed evacuated on emergency slides. i didn't know what happened. >> very chaotic. no one knew what was going on. >> reporter: these photos obtained by cnn show the scene inside the airport lounge where passengers waited hours for luggage. according to the faa, the plane came safely to a stop at the emg -- at the edge of the roadway. the faa is investigating. ten non-life-threatening injuries were later reported but the scare comes on the heels of the crash-landing of flight 214 that left three dead at san francisco airport this month. now, images of that plane's

interior show charred seats and and an eerie reminder of what can happened. they closed the airport an hour but caused a ripple effect of flights for the rest of the night. southwest is cooperating with local authorities and the ntsb has been notified. thank goodness there were not serious injuries. ntsb is looking at the situation, assessing it, deciding whether or not to open a formal investigation. meantime, the flight's data recorders are being sent to the ntsb's labs in washington. still, a lot of questions surrounding what caused it. dave? >> thank you for that report from new york. there are plenty of nervous b.a.r.t. riders with the next strike deadline 12 days away. b.a.r.t.á management and the labor union seem to be far apart in this bitter labor

dispute. tara moriarty joins us from oakland to tell us what's happening in negotiations right now. >> reporter: well, both sides are still sitting down table at the table. that's -- sitting down at the table. that's a good sign. away from the table, there's quite a bit of mudslinging. the chief negotiator, thomas hawk, is a union buster. it also says that he will be absent for 10 of the 15 days of hock. now, b.a.r.t. defended hock's reputation and they say should be able to ink out a deal in ten to 15 days. some riders are furious. >> i uld have to telework if they go on strike. >> reporter: later this afternoon, as the macarthur b.a.r.t. stays, commuters can get a

look. according to the the reports, half of did the 16 million in new revenue that b.a.r.t. has raged in has gone toward the rising cost. both sides have until august 4th to strike a deal. if not, another strike could happen. live from oakland, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. we have some new information about a deadly collision between a bicyclist and a pedestrian in san francisco. ktvu news has learned that the bicyclist, christopher bucari, has agreed to plead guilty to felony vehicular manslaughter. now, bucari hit and killed 71- year-old wee in march of last year during morning rush hour. the guilty plea for a bicyclist in vehicular manslaughter is a first-of-its-kind in the country. a source says the felony charge could be reduced to a misdemeanor in six months, with bucari sentenced to three years of probation and 1,000 hours of

community service. 7:06. police in horgan hill -- morgan hill have arrested a teenager for rape. they say the 16-year-old attacked a 40-year-old woman friday night. he apparently knew she was vulnerable. police say hours earlier, a cabdriver needed some help getting the intoxicated woman into her house and asked for help from the teenaged boy and her mother patting by -- passing by. police believe the boy went back to attack the woman and burglarize her home. police found her belongings in his home. the city council will take a second look at paying for property damage stemming from the manhunt for a heavily armed man who just killed two police officers. the owner of the doyle street apartment building filed a claim against the city after bullets from that shootout damaged their building. earlier, the city council rejected their claim of almost

$5,000. happening today, a complex and expensive attempt to raise a sunken schooner that crashed on july 4th. alex savidge is in richmond this morning where the recovery mission could begin pretty soon. alex? >> reporter: should get underway shortly. crews are expected to use a crane to actually lift this sunken sailboat out of several feet of mud and tow it back here to shore. this boat has been sitting in the water right off the break for the past several weeks. it's called the aldaborn. it's sitting in 30 feet of water. the owners, the ferns, have come up with this plan to get the boat back to shore. yesterday, drivers went in and patched up a number of holes on the boat to get it ready for this recovery operation. the homemade schooner first ran aground back on the 4th of july on the break water. the coast guard had to rescue the 19 passengers on board and

ordered the owners of the board to raise the 70-foot vessel up. that's what they plan to do. the schooner was built by haden brown by hand back in 1971. it's a well-known boat here in the sailing community. before the accident, they sailed in various festivals and used the boat in charity events as well. since the accident, the couple have been raising money to try to pay for the repairs and obviously what will be a costly recovery operation expected to get underway later this morning. crews expected to start this work. live this morning in point richmond, ktvu channel 2 news. thank you, alex. 7:09. let's see what sal is following. everybody banking around the toll plaza? >> so far, dave and pam. good morning to you. traffic is moving along relatively well. there are no major problems. i do want to mention that traffic will be low slow in

some areas. a little bit maze at 80, slow at the maze and 580 some slow spots through the area. northbound 101 traffic looks good approaching the 80 split there. there are no problems on the lower deck. i want to put up on the maps, there's reportedly an accident according to chp with paramedics on the way. westbound highway 4, just east of bailey. we were looking for it on our camera. we couldn't find it. it's supposedly at bailey road i don't see anything. they've dispatched the fire department. actually, you know, jay-jay, if you move to the left, if you move the camera to the left and tilt up a little bit. tilt up. up there. up there at the -- at the very end is where it could be. we're gonna try to find out for you, joe and i are gonna try to find that for you and see if it's there. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. a lot of cloud cover.

there's been some rain. low clouds, foggy conditions. the wind has kind of turned. some east, some westerly. a lot of clouds are coming from -- get out of the picture you can see it. wrapping back around. there are some areas showing a little bit of a break towards the mother lode in southern california today, partly, mostly cloudy. partly sunny later on today. kind of humid, kind of sticky out there because of the tropical clouds. light rain, the possibility of shower activity. there's a little system spinning up the coast. not probably reaching the ground. a lot of this from san francisco towards bodega bay. a lot of reports of rain on the peninsula. redwood, south san francisco el granada, half moon bay bay. i know belmont had some reports of light rain. same around san jose. a lot of moisture continues to stream towards them. from the valley back to san jose, santa clara valley, and then also offshore.

maybe down around hollister as well. you can see the low coming down here. also down in southern california, things are quieter today than yesterday. some of that is moving south to north. 60s on many of the temperatures. a couple of reports in sacramento, mostly sunny. we're in the cloud ban right now. i think the temperatures will be today as forecasted because we'll get a mix of sun, clouds. there's a possibility of a shower or thundershower. that little line that formed to the west of king city. cloudy to mostly cloudy. very light sprinkles. a possibility of a shower later today. morning fog. 60s, 70s and 80s. if the cloud cover sticks some of thatting on the fog on the -- that fog on the deck of the bridges. be careful. some of the fog could be cooler inland. breaks through the clouds. clearing by tomorrow. we'll see warmer conditions by friday and cooler on the weekend. a local chef, tragically killed.

a lot of cloud cover over us. very thick fog near the coast. parts of the bridges as well. there you go. reducing visibility. the clouds will clear. maybe a few showers. 70s and 80s inland. two days of heavy rain. look at this. causing more flash flooding in arizona. some areas had more than 2 inches of rain. you can see people trying to get through the muddy water but drivers like that one did not

make it. but not everybody's complaining, believe it or not. people in downtown phoenix say that rain is keeping the hot temperatures down. happening now, how much funding the defense department will receive next year is up for debate. kyla campbell is in washington, d.c., where a rare coalition in the house is working to cut funding for some defense programs. kyla? >> reporter: the proposal calls for nearly 600 billion in defense spending. we're going to take a look at the house floor, where members are giving opening remarks. we haven't heard yet about the defense spending bill so far this hour. this is where tea party conservatives and liberal democrats are actually working together. they want to limit funding and operations for the nsa. they are pitching amendments to the defense spending bill. one would allow the nsa to collect phone records only if the person is the subject of an investigation. that amendment and others will be voted on after the house

starts going over the sweeping spending plan this morning. lawmakers from both parties are trying to keep the obama administration from arming the syrian rebels without congressional approval. but some republicans say they won't cut funding to programs that fight terrorism. we will continue listening live to the house floor. we'll have the latest developments for you next hour. live in washington, kyla cam bem, ktvu channel 2 news -- campbell, ktvu channel 2 news. the senate budget committee will hold a hearing on the impact of defense department furloughs on national security and the economy. 650,000 civilians defense department employees are being forced to take one unpaid day tof each week through -- each week through september 21st. it's part of the sequester cuts. three nato troops were killed in afghanistan. reportedly, they were attacked by a suicide bomber in wardak province. the bomber was dressed up as a farmer riding a donkey at the timethe river. the project may prove to be too

expensive. 7:19. still no firm plans for another bottle rock music festival, the napa city council wants to meet and we view what could be improved anyway. the five-day forecast was the biggest event in napa city history. people who live near the festival where the festival was held. they had a lot of complaints. however, music lovers raved about the event. now the city is looking at what they might do differently if they ever decide to host something that big again. right now, it's 7:19. it's not a very summer-like forecast we're getting from steve this morning. here's a live look outside. a bit of fog. we'll tell you how long this foggy, cloudy weather will last and where it's headed right now. looked up about 14 stories up and this girl was up on the rail preparing to go. >> a dramatic rescue. right out of the movies. how several stuntmen helped bring this real-life drama to

neither the bank nor the store chain is commenting. the store says customers should not notice any change in service and product during the financial restructure. now the chain is based in san jose. it has 21 stores in california. most of them in the bay area. me pueblo says all will remain open. let's check in with sal. i was gonna ask you to take me to the bridge. i know some of them you can't see because of the fog. >> right. the golden gate we can't see the towers there. we can take a look at other things. i want to show you that highway 4 is actually doing pretty well. we had an earlier crash as you approach bailey road. it was in the center divide. didn't cause a big amount of slow traffic that's not normally there. we have a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. that's backed up for about a 20- minute delay before you make it on the actual span in getting into san francisco is easy once you get up on the bridge. we're looking at the rest of

the commute in contra costa county. we mentioned 80. it is doing very well. so far from vallejo to pinole, i would say it's lighter than usual. westbound 580 near the toll plaza, you can watch for slow traffic approaching the richmond san rafael bridge. 880 south they were recording an earlier crash near whipple road. could be on the shoulder. but traffic is still slow. let's go to steve. a lot of cloud cover over us. it looks like there's breaks to the east and the south. you can see a lot of tropical clouds. very low fog. so the combination of two, kind of a muggy pattern. a lot of cloud cover. there have been a few reports of light rain. again, reports of a mostly sunny out to the sacramento valley and definitely southern california. some of that warm air is really squashing the fog. it's down on the deck. we call it a very shallow marine layer. a fog bank. some of these temperatures, 60s on the temperatures. you would expect that with the tropical clouds. the rain will be light.

we could get some light rain. there's a little system kind of spinning by. look at southern california. they are sunny. that will work its way north. a couple of hit-and-miss showers. a lot of this not reaching the ground. we've had reports on the peninsula of light rain. there's still plenty racing across. we'll keep an eye on things, dave, and see if we can get more later this afternoon. 7:26. we're still waiting to see the new royal baby. we'll bring you a live report from london where that frenzy continues. plus -- new pictures from right inside the wreckage of asiana flight 214. it could be months before the final report is complete. >> reporter: we're live in millbrae where hundreds of high school students are asking the college to reconsider its position on evaluating a.p. test scores. we'll tell you the action some parents are taking this morning as "mornings on 2" continues.

happening today -- parents and students at a millbrae high school may file lawsuits against a testing service after hundreds of a.p. test scores were thrown out. ktvu's brian flores is live at mills high school in millbrae to tell us what happened and what's next for the students. >> reporter: good morning.

a.p. courses are meant to give high school stunts a leg up -- students a leg up college courses. some are left wondering whether that will happen because their a.p. scores were deemed inval -- invalid. about 224 students are affected by this. they found there were seating irregularities where the students were sitting last year. it's not clear what the irregularities were but there's indications of no cheating. chams of cheating is something -- claims of sheeting is something that parents even ecs said did not happen. students are supposed to sit at individual desks. what's bying reported is that because mills ran out of classroom space, some students

had to sit in the library at circular desks. many parents are upset because instead of getting credit for college, they are now faced with possibly a huge financial burden. the students may have to take the test again or delay college for later on. this website is called "why we need our scores back." the college board said they will reissue the test again. but many parents and students upseptember because they say it -- upset because they say it ruins their plans to visit colleges soon. another community meeting scheduled for tomorrow night at the high school. live here in millbrae. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. and antolin garcia-torres is due back in a courtroom. he's accused of kidnapping and killing morgan hill teenager

sierra lamar. he was arrested more than a year ago. now, despite being in court several times, he still has not entered a plea. his lawyers are blaming trouble examining the evidence from those delays. according to court documents, garcia torres is required to be in court today. we now have pictures from inside the plane that crashed at sfo. these pictures posted insign, one shows the -- inside the cabin, onshows the cabin and one shows where the tail shut off. the ntsb says it typically takes 12 to 15 months to complete the report. they are still trying to determine which fire truck ran over one passenger during the crash. the "chronicle" reports that truck 37 hit the teenager. that's not been confirmed. last week, the coroner girl said the girl survived the

crash but was killed by a responding fire truck. the faa is investigating the cause of a small plane crash in south lake tahoe that killed a man in tahoe. the plane went down in awooded area area east of the airport. it large altitude shortly after taking off and then hit paurnl pine trees. the pilot of palo alto was killed. an off-duty nurse out walking her dog helped his life who suffered moderate injuries. >> an off-duty nurse was in area walking. she's actually married to one of other deputies. she arrived in minutes. >> police say heat and altitude can be a problem with temperatures. the temperatures weres in the 90s when the plane crashed. a double-decker bus accident in san francisco

causing some concerns about low- hanging wires. five tourists were hurt last friday when a tour bus hit a loose wire on 12th avenue. the wire came down on the passengers on the bus. one woman was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries but she's recover. the driver stopped at a station down the block to get help. >> the double-decker buses that exceed certain height are restricted to routes. this happened to be the exception. >> the general manager for the tour bus was the driver was drug tested. i also says the route is used to avoid heavy traffic on other streets. at this point, still not clear who owns the fire that came down. benicia police are asking for the public's help to find who injured a teenagerrer on a back last tuesday night on

sheryl drive. the teen suffered serious injuries when he was thrown from the back. anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call benicia police. berkeley is offering a $15,000 reward in the driver responsible for a deadly hit- and-run accident. 46-year-old john patrick miller of berkeley was killed on the university overpass eight days ago on 880. berkeley police are looking for information about the car who hit him. happening today, the sunnyvale city council is taking up the issue of dog parks. ktvu's janine de la vega is in sunnyvale this morning where people say the city's 30,000 dogs need a little more space. janine? >> reporter: pam, i spoke with one dog owner here who says that people from all over the city come here. that's because los paul maus park is the only -- las palmas park is the only dog park in the city limits. this is the only fenced-in area at the park. there's no grass. that's what some are complaining about.

they also say there's not much shade and the water provided for the dogs is dirty. city officials realized there's demand for more unleashed areas for dogs in the city. they are holding a community meeting tonight to discuss the issue. sunnyvale held a survey in the spring asking residents which park should have dog parks, how they should be designed and what amenities should be included. they heard from more than 700 people. dog owners we spoke to say the one dog park in the city needs improvement. >> i just think they could do a little more with it. there's mostly dry dirt in there. i think they could have more greenery. they have the grass on the outer patches. but when it's hot in there, the dogs have nowhere to go. i think they could put a little bit more shelter in there. city officials say sunnyvale has more than 30,000 dogs living within the city limits. the city is recommending that $100,000 from the city apark

fund be used to create fenced- off leashed areas for dogs. that public meeting will be held at 7:00 in council chambers and the community is invited to come. reporting live from sunnyvale, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:37. two public meetings will be held tonight and on monday about a plan to extend ace commuter train service. officials are considering a plan to run more trains between stockton and san jose and extend the service to manteca and merced. the meeting will be held at 5:00 tonight at the fremont center. another meeting is set for 5:00 on monday in livermore. if you take caltrain, be ready to pay more to park. daily and monthly parking fees are going up starting september 1st. for this. usually it's in august or a september event but they are here in july. it's produced a little bit of light rain, they are wrapping back around trying to drive in

drier air from the south. some of that is really thick. i know right over the ggb is really thick. very shallow rain area. although it's hit and miss. a little slow is coming up the coast. as it does, it's enhancing the cloud cover tapped into it. look at sail, it's mostly sunny down -- look at southern california, it's mostly sunny down there. heeldsburg, lake county, very light toward the russian river. also on the peninsula, had a few reports of rain around san bruno, but again, most of this looks to be winding down. there's still moisture streaming across. so the santa clara valley. we've had a couple of reports. probably hecker pass. but i've not heard from jim. 60s on the temperatures. vell mild due to the cloud cover. you would expect that with the tropical clouds. still cloud cover wrapping bag

weekend. the manager says there will be cake and champagne at the celebration. the bar at 1527 almaden expressway. the details and exact time will be posted on the bar's facebook page and twitter account. you can go to our website, kut.com, for latest -- ktvu.com, for the latest, including the tradition that could influence his name. you will find that at the top of the home page. 7:48. new attention today on george zimmerman just days after being acquitted in florida for the shooting death of trayvon martin. zimmerman is being credited with helping to rescue a family of four. police in florida say last wednesday, zimmerman stopped to help the family escape from an overturned vehicle. his lawyer says he was not surprised to hear that news. >> the idea that he would stop to help somebody in trouble is the george zimmerman that i have known about his hole life.

>> police say george zimmerman and one other person pulled over to help the family. they say zimmerman left after waiting to talk to a deputy and tell him what happened. the peninsula family mourning the loss of a man who died trying to help accident victims on interstate 280. kirk peterson was hit and killed in woodside early sunday morning. the chp says it happened shortly after peterson saw a crash. he pulled over, tried to run across the lanes to help out, he was hit by an oncoming suv. the redwood city man's mother is not surprised her son's last act was a heroic one. >> it was automatic. that was just kirk. he was selfless, put other people first. he wanted people to feel special. it was him that was special. >> a driver involved in that initial crash, charles miranda

welcome back to "mornings on 2." we want to show you -- actually tell you about a story -- that's about a club opening in san jose. but this story we want to tell you about first is a bear in southern california caught on camera trying to free one of her cubs from a dumpster. the rescue attempt took place yesterday in a parking lot in azusa, east of los angeles. wildlife officials came by to lift and let the baby bear out. he had been trapped there for 20 minutes. he came out and found his way to freedom. a new bikini bar is opening

in downtown san jose. some of the neighbors don't like it. san jose city manager says the gold club can open for business once they get permits because it meets zoning requirements. some people living near there are worried this will bring an increase in crime. >> it will bring a lot of problems downtown. >> well, supporters are saying the bikini bar will bring business to downtown san jose and similar establishments have not caused problems. the san francisco "chronicle" reports that brian wilson has been pitching for giants' pitching coach who likes what he sees so far. bruce bochy looking for help in the bullpen. so they are monitoring his rehab closely. he's played seven seasons with the giants but has had two

bitter labor dispute. tara moriarty joins us from oakland with one glimmer of hope in this situation. tara? >> reporter: well, you know, passengers that we have been talking to have actually been cringing at the thought of another strike. but the good news, as you mentioned, the two sides are talking, although they aren't really playing nice away from the bargaining table. b.a.r.t.'s largest union says b.a.r.t. eight chief negotiator thomas hock is a union buster who has a history of provoking strikes. he will be absent for 10 of the final talks, those days. and with the defense bargaining team, they say they should be able to hammer out a team. commuters say they've had it. >> i really don't understand why it's so difficult, especially because i don't think that b.a.r.t. unions completely right and i don't think b.a.r.t. is completely right but they still need to find something in the middle.

accused of sex crimes involving a 6-year-old girl and another underaged teenaged girl, charged for both of those alleged crimes last week. and a few minutes ago, police say there are now two more victims bringing the number of victims to four. >> the first victim is a 5-year- old female who reported that while under the care of larimey, he took sexually explicit photographs of her. detectives were able to corroborate this by images from a cell phone. the next victim, 7-year-old female, reported he molested her and detectives were able to corroborate that statement with other witness statement as the scene. >> reporter: now, police tell us that the investigation is still going on on those cases as well as looking for more potential victims. the suspect will be back in court this afternoon where some

crash-landing of an asiana jet at sfo. we have new information this morning about the deadly collision between a bicyclist and a pedestrian in san francisco. ktvu news has learned that the bicyclist, christopher bucari, has agreed to plead guilty. now, a guilty plea for vehicular manslaughter for someone riding a bike is the first of its kind in the country. he hit and killed a 71-year-old man in march of 2012. one source says that the felony charge could be reduced to a misdemeanor with bucari sentenced to three years probation and 1,000 hours of community service. a 16-year-old boy was arrested by morgan him police. he's accused of raining an -- raching an intoxicated woman on friday night. police say hours before the attack, a cabdriver needed help getting a woman in her house. he asked for help from the boy and his mother who were apparently passing by.

officers believe the boy went back to the house later to attack the woman, then went back again with two friends to burglarize her home. police say the victim's stolen ip terms were found in the -- stolen items were found in the teenager's home. city council will meet behind doors again. they take a second look at paying for the property damage stemming from the manhunt for a heavily-armed man who just killed two police officers. the owners of the doyle street apartment building filed a claim against the city after bullets from the shootout damaged their building. earlier, council rejected their claim of almost $5,000. happening today, crews with very large cranes will try to raise a schooner that sank in the waters in rismmond on the fly -- richmond on the 4th of july. alex savidge joins us live in richmond to tell us what's happening out there to bring that broken boat out to life. >> reporter: this work is

supposed to get underway shortly. salvage crews are expected to use a large crane. they will bring it out here to this sinken sailboat and try to lift it out of the mud. you can see as we push in looking out towards the bay, you can see the mass of this sail -- macht of this sailboat beyond the break point. it's been here stuck in the mud under 30 feet or so of water for the past several weeks. this schooner is under about 30 feet of water. the owners, haden and fern brown, have come up with a blan to try to get the -- plan to try to get the boat back up to the shore. the homemade skooner originally ran aground on the 4th of july. it smashed into the breakwater. the coast guard had to rescue the owners on board and then the coast guard ordered the owners of the 7 a-feet vessel to get it out of the water. the schooner was built by

haden, his pride and joy, back in 1971. it's a well-known bolt. they sailed in a up in of festivals and used it for charity events. since the accident, the couple has been trying to raise money to pay for repairs and what will be a complicated recovery. we'll bring you back out here to a live picture, sitting there beyond the breakpoint. crews are beginning their work, again, using a laurmg crane to lift this -- a large crane to lift this boat out of the water. 8:08 is the time. how's the commute at this hour, sal? >> it's betting better, pam and dave. people who waited around, maybe had the luxury of having that extra cup of coffee, it's paid off. at the bay bridge, you can see some improvement here. it's only backed up to the middle of the parking lot. some people take vacation in july or something like that. this is 880 northbound and southbound, the traffic is looking good here.

firefighters died last month while battling a wildfire in prescott, arizona. the first time reporters have been able to review the scene. 19 members of an elite firefighting unit known as the granite mountain hot shots died last month when the massive wildfire overran them. a temporary memorial marks the site while plans are made for a permanent one. also happening today, funding the nation's defense department, it is front and center on capitol hill. as kyla campbell reports, the house is debating the defense spending bill. kyla? >> reporter: the proposal includes nearly $600 billion for defense programs but not everyone agrees on where the money should go. there are tea party conservatives teaming up with liberal democrats to fight this program. they are pitching amendments to

pushing to end the delivery of mail to your doorstep. california congressman darrell issa is leading the effort on capitol hill to eliminate door- to-door mail delivery. his bill would require everybody to pick up mail from a cluster of mailboxes located in your neighborhood. supporters say this plan would save the postal service billions of dollars. but then the critics are saying that plan would cause big prems blems for a lot of people, especially the disabled and ermd. 400,000 baby jumpers are being recalled. they are the baby einstein musical motion activity jumpers. the consumer products safety commission says the sun attachment can hit babies in the head pretty hard, actually. 61 babies have gotten cuts and bruises to the face. one 7-month-old boy suffered a skull fracture. the jumpers were sold at target, toys 'r' us and other stores over the last three years.

this is something for the hispanic community. they are trying to reorganize and reassure employees and customers. managers admit it may take six months before the uncertainty of the future is resolved. there are 21 chains based in san jose. most stores are here in the bay area. me pueblo says all of the stores will stay open. customers should not notice a difference because of the bankruptcy. the richmond human rights commission is borking on new rules for the city's public meeting after some anti-gay comments. it started when richmond decided to fly rainbow flag at city hall. some people expressed their disagreement flying the flag, using language describing gays and lesbians that some say is

keep the scores because the college says they can't. about 224 students affected by this. they found there were seating irregulartarities where the students were seated at the time of a.p. testing in may. it's not clear what the seating irregularities were. but the seating protocols are set to prevent things like cheating. there are no current allegation of cheating but what they say is an issue of overall integrity for all students. ideally and typically students are to sit at individual desks. from what's been reported in the case, because mills ran out of classroom space, some students had to sit in the library at tables sitting diagonally from each other. they say they had no choice but to invalidate the tests taken at mills high. but students around parents say it takes weeks and months to prepare for these exams.

girl survived the crash but was killed by a responding fire truck. the faa is investigating the cause of a small plane crash in south lake tahoe that killed a man from palo alto. officials say the single-engine plane went down in a wooded area east of the south lake ta ta -- south lake tahoe yesterday morning. the plane lost altitude shortly after taking off. then it hit some pine trees and flynned over -- and then flipped over. e lot was killed. an off-duty nurse was out walking her dog in the area and came to the aid of the pilot's wife who suffered modry injuries. there's a new development tonight in connection with a deadly hit and run in berkeley that took the life of a 46-year- old man. the city of berkeley is now offering a $15,000 reward in hopes of finding the driver. the coroner identified the victim as john patrick miller of berkeley. miller was killed on the

university avenue overpass right above interstate 80 a week ago today. police say they have no information about the car that hit him. happening now, sunnyvale dog owners are taking their concerns to the city council. ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega is in sunnyvale where people are demanding more osh-leash areas for the city's 30,000 dogs. janine? >> reporter: well, the sign here at the park says the sign must be on their leash. if not, the owners will get fined $75. but the only place in the city where you can actually have your dog off leash is actually inside this dog park which is within las palmas park. it's a fenced-in area. there's a couple of dog owners with their dogs here running around this morning but some of these people say this area is small, considering the amount of dogs in the city. city officials realize there is a demand for more unleashed areas for dogs. they are holding a community meeting tonight to discuss the

issue. sunnyvale held a survey in the spring asking residents which park should have dog parks, how they should be designed and what amenities should be included. they heard from more than 700 people. this one dog owner side this park needs improvement. >> i think there's more needed especially -- i live in cupertino, we don't have any dog parks over there. so we have to come to sunnyvale for this dog park which is very nice. but it doesn't have any grass on it. so i think we definitely need more dog parks around here. >> city officials say sunnyvale has more than 30,000 dogs living within the city limits and the city is recommending $is00,000 from the city's park fund be used to create fenced- off leash areas for dogs. the public meeting that will be held tonight to discuss this issue will be at 7:00 in the council chambers. back out here live, you can see here is a friendly one coming

showers. you get the sun, that previdz heat -- that provides heating and that's possible. kind of cluedy, muggy, sticky, humid. light rain, thunderstorms. the majority should be in the morning. drier air will be moving in. right now we're under a lot of the cloud cover. you can see how there was reports of very light rain. it looks like things have calmed down. big lightning showed up in the sierra. 11:30, midnight. the skies were lit up in tahoe. some lows near 70s. if the cloud cover doesn't increase, some of these temperatures will be in the nibts. and so will the humidity. people not get cranky. some of that wrapping back around. this may be more of an event for mendocino county, lake

quite a few are actually right on target. some of it disappointing. but despite that, the numbers are up. well, after today's closing bell, though, two bay area tech leaders are scheduled to announce quarterly earnings, analysts expect apple to report sales of $35 billion. but investors are looking for new reasons to get excited about that stock. it's down nearly 40% from the all-time high it hit last september. facebook, investors are looking for signs of expansion especially in the market. let's bring you up to date on some of the other top stories for you -- we want to update the breaking news from morgan hill. we first reported it at 8:00. two more victims have come forward in the face of a former. south bay ymca child care worker already charged with lewd behavior with a 6-year-old girl. the ntsb is investigating yesterday's serious accident at

new york's la guardia airport involving a southwest airlines jet flying in from nashville. here's new video of the accident as it happened yet yesterday afternoon. the front landing gear collapsed. the boeing was skidding along the tarmac. several people were hurt. the runways at la guardia by the way reopened just hours ago. and we're now less than two weeks away from a deadline to avoert another b.a.r.t. -- avert another b.a.r.t. strike. b.a.r.t. workers say they will walk off the job again if there's no deal by august 4th. an operation is underway to pull the wrecked schooner from where it ran aground in richmond. the boat's evener hopes to save it. but we'll wait to see. alex savidge is out there. maybe he has a better idea of the damage in richmond. >> reporter: there could be problems here. i just talked with the head of the salvage company. he tells me this boat is heavily damaged. he's out there right now, just

beyond the break. as you push in here, you can see the two masts on the 70- foot sailboat. the real problem, there's heavy damage. right now he's trying to get it out of a couple of feet of mud that it's been stuck in. the head of the salvage crew is gonna have to wait for high tide which he says will come at about 10:00 this morning. that will help to float the boat and remove it from the position right now. this is a schooner that's been sitting here for the past several weeks, ever since it ran aground. the owners haden and fern brown came up with a plan originally to use a plane to lift the broet and carry it with -- boat and carry it to a salvage yard. but that was too costly. the coast guard had to rescue all passengers on board when it ran aground. haden brown built this schooner by hand back in 1971. it's his pride and joy. the owner is hoping he will be

able to recover the boat and repair it. but tim parker of parker diving services told me a short time ago. he's out there looking at this boat. there are a number of holes in the hull. he says it will be very expensive to fix it. >> you can take a piece of wood and build a titanic around it if you have enough money. you know, i wouldn't save it. i would just -- i know he's had 43 years into this and this is like his baby. but he's gotta be thinking with his pocketbook and not in his heart. >> reporter: the schooner is well-known in the sailing community. the boat was sailed in a number of festivals, even used for charity events as well. ever since the accident, this couple, the owners have been trying to raise money to pay for the repairs to the boat and what's become a very complex recovery operation. it's a very costly one. i'm told the cost just to get

the bet out of its position where it's sturk right now is about $30,000 -- stuck right now is about $30,000 and that doesn't include repair work. they will wait for high tide around 10:00 this morning. that will help lift the boat up and pull it out of there. the question, where to take it after that. according to parker head diving services, there are not many yards that want to take the boat because it's in such bad shape. they are worried it might break apart as they try to lift it up. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. a bay area skipper remains in a san francisco jail this morning. john mccormick is facing federal charges after leading the u.s. coast guard on a chase in the waters near sausalito sunday afternoon. the coast guard says he refused to let a coast guard party on his boat and took off. investigators say mccormick attacked one of the officers when an armed coast guard team finally boarded his boat.

just days after being aqated for the -- acquitted for the shooting of trayvon martin, george zimmerman is being credited for helping to rescue a family from a car crash. last week he stopped to help a family escape from an overturned vehicle. his lawyer says he's not surprised to hear this news about zimmerman. >> the idea he would stop someone out to help someone in trouble, is the george zimmerman i've known my whole life. >> one other person pulled over to help out. they say zimmerman left the scene after waiting to talk to a deputy sheriff about what happened. federal investigators now recommending new safety rules for school buses. the recommendations are the result of this deadly crash in chesterfield, new jersey. an 11-year-old girl was killed in this crash. five other sturnts were serious i -- students were serious hurt. the ntsb says they believe

check out this video. a close encounter for two divers. this is off san luis obispo, they were shooting video and then the water filled with sardines and that's when the massive whales appeared and swallowed a lot of those sardine, barely missing the divers. they quickly swam back to the boat laughing a bit about their close call. whew. leopard trucks floorishing in the san francisco bay. researchers at uc davis say a large population of leopard sharks has been spotted near the san mateo bridge. federal and state agencies have been working to restore marine life populations since purchasing more than 15,000 acres of salt ponds in 2003. a new bikini bar opening in downtown san jose has some neighbors nervous.

san jose city managers say the gold club can open for business once they get all of the needed permits because it does meet zoning requirements. some people who live in the area are worried the new club on south market and santa clara streets will attract crime. >> we know that -- it could require extra scrutiny because of what the proposal appears to be, something that might be skimpy clothing. >> the bikini bar could open up next month. nude dancing won't be abe loued to because of zoning regulations. two-for one, the giants will host the reds in a dare double header. this comes after the reds destroyed tim lincecum and the giants 11-1 last night at at&t park. today's first game will be at 4:00 this afternoon. that's to make up for a rainout in cincinnati on the fly. the second game is the 57:00. one ticket -- the second time is at 7:00 tonight.
